it's like me put in his boss the party in st. peter's like just to show you how tight that relationship is. and so the unease with which get hot food has ties to puts in and russia have gone back so low really just is no kind of turning into something more than an ethan to discussed. really. all right, thank you. matthew. matthew more political correspondent. it is joining us. here's a recap of that. i see developments in russia's war against ukraine. ukrainian president vladimir zalinski has repeated his appeal to the european union to allow his country immediate membership in an emotional speech to the european parliament . he urged the a you to prove it was siding with ukraine in this war with russia on the ground. russian troops continuing their advance on ukraine's capital satellite images here to show a convoy of military vehicles stretching more than 60 kilometers. just north with keys convoy includes hundreds of armored vehicles, tanks and artillery. meanwhile,
4:31 pm
the eastern city of khaki if is being attacked from the air for a 2nd day. russia rockets have struck a local government building in the central square. president zalinski has described the attack as a war crime. diplomats were around the world have walked out of the un human rights counseling geneva, as russian foreign minister did as russia's foreign minister delivered a prerecorded speech. you claims on pastor led diplomats at the chamber in process of the russian invasion. so again, lover of speech followed to switzerland joining the e. u. in banning russian flights from the test base. russian foreign minister sought to justify his country's actions by claiming moscow was trying to protect ethnic russians in easton, ukraine, from the government in keefe. the purpose of our action is to save these people by fulfilling our obligations as allies and to demilitarize and do not so fi ukraine, so that such a thing will never occur. again,
4:32 pm
this is particularly relevant in the light of the fact that this country is being dragged into nato, that the country is being flooded with offensive weapons. and this is a country which has openly made territorial claims against the right of russian federation and threatened to use force and to acquire a military nuclear capability. well, emily, sherwin is with me now. she was a correspondent in moscow until her accreditation was revoked by russia early last year last month. welcome, emily. let's start with what we were hearing there from. so gay law for all these continued justifications for russia's invasion as saying that it was to be nazi fine, demilitarized ukraine, despite ukraine, having a jewish president who's really, who's fought against the nazis. why is moscow continuing to push that live? well, i think there are 2 things here. on the one hand, russia has been presenting itself almost as being
4:33 pm
a besieged fortress for quite some, some time. a country surrounded by enemies who are rasa phobic. that's the word that we've heard a lot in the past months and even years. and this, this denotes vacation idea is also based on, you know, a very emotional past. of course, the soviet union fought against nazi germany during world war 2, which is known in russia as the great patriotic war. and that has almost become a founding myth for russian identity, especially in the last few years, especially under putin. this myth has been kind of pushed almost as well. you know, there's a lot of truth to it in some ways. and, you know, there have been these huge victory day parades on, held every year in moscow, and everyone can relate it to the, this horrible story, you know, evolve of all the soviet soldiers being killed. almost every family has some one
4:34 pm
who was killed. so in a way not sees are the perfect enemy, even it in this context because it's a very emotional thing to touch on from. for most people, it's particularly convenient now when russians are fighting ukrainians. many people also have ties to ukraine, relatives, their friends, they're so kind of almost shrouding this campaign in this miss ionic historical mission is kind of convenient. i think now for the russian government and all, not, ha, ha, a city with a russian speaking majority. so, russia's attacking ukraine's 2nd city. how was that being told, how was that story being told to the russian public? well, the idea is yes, that they're protecting the russian speaking minority in the country. but it, you're right, it doesn't sort of make sense. it doesn't add up and when they 1st started attacking hard, keep on sunday, russian state media pushed the idea that ukrainian soldiers were actually
4:35 pm
voluntarily laying down their arms almost welcoming russian. you know, the russian liberators. that's kind of the idea. and today, we saw these pitch pictures of the missile hitting the main square, but the russian narrative is that they aren't hit hitting civilian targets. that's what they're saying again and again that they're just hitting military targets. and they've denied reports as well of a cluster ammunition being used. there were media reports of that as well in hard keith. and now we have, as you were saying before, a convoy moving on key as and for example, today the ministry of defense have said that they will hit within key f objects that are a source of information attacks. so including security service buildings within the capital. so that's almost kind of seems to me it in the preparation, when it comes to propaganda, as you, as it were for a potential attack on key f. so kind of these counter narratives. um and, and propaganda that we're seeing and hearing from state media. and so now it's
4:36 pm
important to remember, of course, that the kremlin is controlling all public pronouncements on this war. so it's disseminating one story. we have antony blinking me, you're a secretary of state. speaking of the un earlier accusing the credit of ramping up repression within russia. is that something that you're aware of? well, you were just saying the kremlin is pushing one story and they're also kind of cracking down on more critical media. for example, they've warned several critical media outlets and told them to delete materials that refer to this special operation as they're calling it as a war or an invasion. and there have been, you know, over 6000 people um, arrested in the past few days, according to rights organizations in the context of anti war demonstrations. so anyone voicing opposition to this war and taking to the streets is kind of being
4:37 pm
arrested. i mentioned the media, there's also a crackdown on the internet and social media happening with facebook being slowed. instagram being slowed down, twitter being slowed down as well. so i think it, it's going to come and is already becoming increasingly difficult for people within russia to get information that isn't controlled by the kremlin. a quick word about tomorrow's 2nd round of talks between representatives from, from the, the 2 sides. what can we expect from it and people taking these negotiation seriously? it's hard to know. i think we didn't have a results at talks yesterday, after you know, 6 hours of talks and the 2 sides that they were going to go back to their capitals . that's what they said and re and reconvene for new talks. the you plain sight is asking for a cease fire to day. we saw these attacks on hot keys. and yesterday, they were also contradictory statements on crimea with ukraine, asking all russian troops to be withdrawn from ukrainian territory, including the crimean peninsula, which russia annexed from, from ukraine,
4:38 pm
back in 2014 illegally. the russian side was saying they want official recognition of the crimean peninsula. so contradictory positions going into that and, and i think perhaps back in moscow people are, are sort of rethinking their strategy. they had expected a much shorter war. it seems, according to many mental military analysts, a former moscow corresponded to emily sherwood thank you. we'll take a look at some more headlines relating to the war in new cray. the united states is expanding a 12 russian us diplomats accusing them of being spies. russians, you are an ambassador, vassily, and the bench here told a session of the security council about the move, calling it a hostile step. elated refused to specify whether he was amongst those told to leave the ambassador. are you craigs navy says its soldiers stationed on snake island are alive and have been taken as prisoners of war by russia. they were presumed killed after refusing to surrender to
4:39 pm
a russian warship in the black sea. that defiance response went viral and ukrainian president, valadez ansley, honor them as heroes of ukraine. western sanctions have sent the value of the russian rouble plummeting occurrences for them to record lows. russians scramble to withdraw money from cash machines. the country central bank a doubled its key interest rate to proper the currency. meanwhile, russian troops bearing down on kiff and satellite images appear to show a 60 kilometer convoy of military vehicles approaching from the north of the city. convo includes a hundreds of armored vehicles, tanks and artillery cranium. forces of repelled earlier attacks by russian forces near the capital and destroyed several russian vehicles close to the city center. for hey, a petticoat is a former deputy minister of justice for european integration of ukraine in our lectures at the national university of kiva. marya academy,
4:40 pm
and joins us from the ukrainian capital. welcome to d. w. a. perhaps we could start by you and telling us what you know of what's happening in the city as we speak. well, the situation is quite nervous here. less than an hour ago. we've seen an official message from the ministry of defense of russia who said they are going to bomb here, supposedly concentrating on the military infrastructure and our communications. and they want the, you know, the, the, the cubans that they should be living close locations. the single part of it is that, i mean, i don't know what, what, what they're referring to. i mean, no one knows what exact location they are planning to bond. and, and it seems like they're, they're just making fun of and, and, and making a pretext of bombed in the civilians. and so the last 2 days were relatively quiet . are because a, you training army managed to push the russians away from the capital. but now that
4:41 pm
we see this message, we seen that russia failing in a conventional war is going to continue what they already doing in mario, paul. and hark, if in the east of ukraine are targeting the civilians in violation of international humanitarian law. and how concerned are you by these reports of a 60 kilometer i, russian convoy, bearing down on the city. now look, i mean, russia and mass a huge on the, on the borders of ukraine and all that is now has been, you know, entering ukraine from up north, east and south from occupied crimea from bell reach that is supporting russia. so mean we've been seeing this for 5 days already. i, i mean there's no, no new information. we follow this in the real time just like you are, we're looking for what's going to happen next. we have a trust in our army, but also we have our tutorial defense people. and i think that unless putting
4:42 pm
choose us to you do the indiscriminate shelling of the city, we have good chances. i mean, it's not only the army that is opposing the putting, but he's also the people in, in key of and as you know, in a city, i mean, ordinary person with a molotov cocktail and with a gun, has just as many chances as the, as the military equipment as tanks and our, i mean we, we are well organized and ready to stand our ground. we've organized, for example, in our residential complex. there people have guns officially, and we are patrolling our, our neighborhoods every night. and i mean, we're ready for whatever comes next. we've heard presence lensky, appealing for ukraine to be admitted to the a you, immediately. how would that help in ukraine's fight against russia? look up, people here are a standing, the grounds are of the russian aggression. not only against our country,
4:43 pm
but against the whole free world and, and the continent. and that's how we seed. and that's finally how europe sees it. and i think it's just, ah, about time for europe to show the solidarity with the ukrainian people. and this is the best way that they can do thus. i mean, saying that you all part of our family, this war is our war. it's not just your problem. and i think we can, you know, talk about the details later. but the political gesture, or the sign of solidarity is something that would really reassure the people. because again, it's not just the on the or, or the politicians who are fighting against the gression. you could see the video footage from around the country of ordinary people, right, going in front of stopping them. so these people need a reassurance and this clear message from your and i just, i to a quick question about face piece talks that have begun or any sort of a piece,
4:44 pm
okay? scanner is going to require compromised. what do, what, what sort of political compromise can you envisage being given to russia in order to stop this attack? at this point of time, i don't think anyone else in ukraine of russia believes in the success of this negotiations. we are standing at the opposite positions right now. so from what i gather from the official information that came out of it and what i think could be useful is only the humanitarian pause. so if, if, if we can agree on, on an abiding by the rules of and conflicts, if we can agree that the civilians should not be targeted. if we can agree the safe zones around and above our nuclear stay, our power stations, there would be a great success already. i don't think we are. these talks can lead see any
4:45 pm
solution to this conflict. but i do believe that even trying to make it safe boss for civilians or make it safe and, and, and i, and stop the possible ecological catastrophic. you know, environmental damage that, that can happen out of, you know, straight check over nuclear station or, or an object like that is already something right. that makes this legal. sions important. it's very clear. thank you so much for joining us and explaining that to us as sir he patrick, off a former deputy minister of justice for european integration of ukraine. thank you . will ukraine is accusing moscow of committing a war crimes after more miss files hit the countries 2nd biggest city hockey of rocket struck the city center and other civilian site and the 2nd day of sustained bombing. the moment a missiles struck at the very heart of ca, keith. this is freedom square in the
4:46 pm
center of ukraine, 2nd largest city, now reduced to rubble. ukraine says russia has been targeting residential buildings in the city with rockets since monday. officials are accusing moscow of committing war crimes which are over today. our enemy has started bombing the city center of khaki and the residential area of douglasville, all the cooking firing with the grant systems and crews, minnesota. they hit an administrative building in the central square. you know, we are counting the victims among the civilian population. is marcia, these are all crimes with our army is strong and we will hold on positions. will nasa army a see?
4:47 pm
let me see him up was easy. ah, sirens ring out to cross key iv as russian troops continue their bonds on the ukrainian capital satellite images appear to show a 60 kilometer convoy of military vehicles close to the city. check points into key if have already been set up by ukrainian police and armed soldiers. a few cranes allies continue to condemn russia as they look on the sidelines. and i'm very pleased with her shocked at peace in europe. all. laws condemn the unjustified and brutal invasion of ukraine. the rush a sol sir, is totally unacceptable. unacceptable. anger. it is enabled by
4:48 pm
a belarus that most ukrainians don't believe the kremlin is listening. as women and children continue to flee to countries like poland, perhaps dreaming of a better life. and if they can ever get back home the loss of us for in following this at war on social media. but many of the posts that have gone viral are either inaccurate or just fake. the w's had a fact checking yashira vapor could not walk us through this. welcome yoga. so if i'm on facebook or twitter reading about this war, what should i look for in terms of fake news? well, we are currently facing there. does the world of social media, real flood of fake and misleading content are seeking for attention. a big part of them is actually all pictures or footage reuse. to give you an example. the next video, i'm a went viral on tick tock. it shows um some jets are over urban area.
4:49 pm
and we do see that a, a chinese, a person erode in chinese, live broadcast of the war and a crane. but that's not the case. what we see here is an old video. and this video was already posted in 2020 and it shows an air show the north of moscow. so you have to be careful what you see and you have to double check before you share it because you. yeah, we'll share it again and a lot of people will see it. so this is quite important. please double check your sources. and these kind of old footage are confusing people, and this is a big problem though. so how do we tell what's genuine and what's not that's difficult to say, and in short, be skeptical, but you have to think twice and take a closer look, please to the foot at your scene. for example, a, we have another example here of some image is showing russian and a cranium. jats fighting and these pictures are, are looked to be real,
4:50 pm
but they aren't. they are actually from a video game called digital combat simulator, which was confirmed by the company behind the video game. these kind of game animations are very realistic. so people think they are real and social media uses claim that this is on the ghost of keith or crenan fighter jet pilot. some sources say that this pilot has shut down 6 russian jets and just one day he has become a move of this war. so far so we recent research more for him and yeah, maybe in the next video we can see that there are several pictures of him circulating on the web and we checked them. a lot of them are manipulators, they photoshop, another hat on a pilot from canada, which is more sadly, a mean and, and yet there are more pictures, remixed like an a crane and soldier and on the head of an argentinean lawyer. so
4:51 pm
all this can be luckily verified via reverse image search fil, right? so all this looks deliberate, this, this doesn't look like just a few social media uses, just getting it wrong. to be honest, it even happens to professionals. take the tv branch of the german media outlet filled, and they had a life r show on the al gore in a crane. and the images of this show show hundreds of russian soldiers allegedly parachuting over the ukrainian city of hockey. as the present explains in the live show, but the footage is in fact old. we found the exact same video on facebook dating back to 2016. the footage it appears is from russia. so sometimes even big media it for, for it and how to be prevented. think before you share double check the material and even look into the meta data of the material film. okay, so stranger is fake,
4:52 pm
you've come across the ocean that relates to this war. yeah, maybe this one and alleged ers see an entry it announced that the see an an journalist, bernie gore's was killed in a crane. as the 1st american casualty in this war and the same on those was killed by the taliban in afghanistan. another tweed claims that sounds strange. it is both accounts were not see an ana cults. they were fake accounts, which were blocked very soon. and even the name is fake. there is no cnn journalist called bernie gore's. the picture belongs to jordy jordan, the youtube from the us. so in short, the whole story and cnn confirmed to us is a big fake fill. i thank you for that. i did of this had a fact checking yosh, a vapor or russia, the war against ukraine's also being felt in the world of classical music. top
