indian prime minister and remote, he has voided condemning russia for its invasion of ukraine. this week has country again abstained in a un resolution deploring russia's actions. and here's the likely motive. in december modi and russian president vladimir putin signed an armed steel worth billions. russia will deliver its s $400.00 advanced missile defense system. india wants to protect itself against attacks from china and pakistan for more. let's bring in dw correspondent charo car, t k, a in new delhi charo. why does this arm steal? have such a significance for near andro modi's government? well, chris, i think it's not just as until the entire gamut of this strange relationship with russia is very important for india because these figures are confidential not released by the government. but a lot of analysts believe that anywhere from 60 to 85 percent of india's

infrastructure is rushing back to do, the weapons isn't due to systems. and the most important trade me right now focuses around this f 400 messiah defense system that russia is selling to the us selling to india. and it has already been to one unit and i think 4 or 5 or more in the pipeline that the, to become. this is something that india went ahead when, in spite of the threat of american sanctions. and interestingly, you with is yet to enforce those sanctions which has made him feel encouraged to go ahead with his be. so overall, this relationship is very important for strategic reasons, as well as for defense reasons, which is possibly why is this thing from taking a very clear cut stand against russia and international for many companies from the west have been cutting their ties with russia. how has the indian corporate world
1:33 pm
been reacting to the russian aggression? i think christine didn't cooperate well if no waiting to take a cue from the government. and since the government has yet to take a stand against russia. indian corporate have also chosen to remain mom or remaining questions about what time they would like to take on the russian economy and doing business in russia. so none of them have taken the stand, for example, like the standard british petroleum that they can. that is something that is missing in in the right now, and i think that is largely because of the line that the government is doing right now. chris, now as russia ties with the west are deteriorating. are they likely than to intensify with india as it is the goal of china for well, you interest us a $1000000.00 question right now that everybody is tracking from journalists to analysts. that is pressure, of course, just 2 days ago,

the german ambassador in new delhi, he gave this interview to a media organization in which he said that germany is hoping that it will change its voting back to the united nations. now that's a very clear good statement, but we haven't yet heard what human chancellor has story, indian prime minister, for example, or what you whisper them for example has stolen prime minister very quickly. the countries these western nations are also trying their best not to give up this image that they are, they are pressurizing, india to take a clear to stand. but yet, the nudging india to take a clear good job that indicating that they are not too happy with the standard has taken especially at the un nudging, but it's still at april walked back india and the width most of them appear to be doing chris w charo carter k, i knew deleon, tara, thank you. well, india's neighbor tr lanka is already going so in economic crisis,

fuel reserves are low as our foreign currency reserves to import it and rising all prices. i'm at the russia ukraine conflict are making a bad situation worse. it's one long line of trucks waiting to get fuel. but with the oil price skyrocketing to more than $110.00 a barrel, sri lanka can't afford much of it. and even when gas stations do get the delivery problems persist, my prayers are they now, you know, i've been here since 7 am yesterday the fuel came, but now they said there is no electricity to come pick it up, might be under the, on the, on the on the one that's because power plants have run out of fuel to ask for hydrogen power. reza was dried up and with monsoon season, 2 months away, there is little hope for things to improve. soon, authorities have no choice but to cut power supply. the land guys i know, experiencing live then be about, that's good on that signing up. i was b, is this,

a shift to how firms respond to conflict. the exit is of firms of western multi nationals from russia is unprecedented. leading brands are taking cover to avoid a financial or reputational hit. many boycotted the country before sanctions targeted their operations. no industry has been spared from the auto industry to the tech sector. the tech platforms right now are really doing a delicate dance in terms of i think it's important for them to stay operational in russia as it's one of the few tools that russian activists can use. that is not controlled by state media. it's one of the few ways of trying to get information out to counter what is coming from the russian government. and so they are trying to both stand up to the country, but also not go so far that to just pull the plug totally on them being, being available. other companies are bracing for the impact of their exit on their

balance sheets. v p. split from russian energy from raw snuff could result in a $25000000000.00 right off while potentially reducing its global oil and gas production by as much as a 3rd. many other western firms have dumpy exact same thing. exiting the market or suspending some or all of their activities. brands are trying to send a clear message about where they stand and not just by boycott in russia. i had a conversation with their executive team over the weekend and you know, we kind of asked them a hypothetical question. imagine, you know, it was world war to an air b, b was around, how would we wanted to have health? what will we have wanted to do? it's just a hypothetical exercise, but when you do exercise like that, you realised that you would regret not doing more. if you cut out and didn't air being b plans to offer housing to up to 100000 people. faleen ukraine, and whether it's a boycott or philanthropy,

major western firms want to highlight how they are taking a stand following russia's invasion of ukraine, showing there's no separating business from geo politics. for more of this, i'm not joined by allison, stored alan founder and ceo of international marketing partners. welcome back to the show allison. how surprised are you by this pretty much united standard restaurant companies in reaction to russia's war on your credit? well, i think the list of companies leaving is massively growing and growing quickly . i think what is absolutely the right thing to do is for these companies to cease trading their, the real question is whether they are just the spending operations temporarily, or whether they are permanently withdrawing from the russian market. for some, the russian market is a significant source of their revenue, and this will be a very damaging commercial decision. however,
1:40 pm
the upside of that is that they build trust with the range of stakeholders, their consumers, their suppliers, their employees, their investors. so no doubt these companies will have weighed this up before making such a decision. do you see this as a major shift when it comes to responsibilities that corporations have? well, it's certainly very interesting that so many companies are taking action. and the real test is going to be when we look back at these companies and 3 years, 5 years time to see if in fact the promises they've been making are still being honored at that point. or are these just temporary opportunities to get people like us to talk about them? hopefully it's a bit more meaningful. and we of course, now expect companies to take a stand on things like this. now this war has changed
1:41 pm
a lot here in europe and comes to the perception of how things are going in this union. do you think that that companies will be more sensitive when it comes to doing business in countries with geo political risk? i mean, can we expect them to take a stand even, you know, if in markets that may be more important than the russian market is to them. well, i think they will. i think we expect them to. and you know, if you think back to column cap or nick and nike position saying no, we're going to back this football, american football player who took the knee. you know, that was a risky decision. you could say for nike to potentially alienate several of its consumers. in effect, what it's done is it is improved. our perception of the mikey brand is a brand that has values that it honors. and so i do think companies are expected
1:42 pm
now and the leaders, it's not just the brands, it's actually the leaders now as spokespeople on. 5 geo political events and yes, this factors into their risk assessment when they do business in different parts of the world doesn't at the same time, companies have been declaring their solidarity with water ukraine. but the margin for error is really thin. here in german supermarket chain, for example, publish an ad would read freedom as a provision against the backdrop of a ukrainian flag. now that cost a lot of backlash, how far can i should companies go in trying to market their solidarity? well, i think the, the way it works is you don't market your solidarity, you just take the decision and you maybe don't need to make a lot of noise about the decision. you do the decision because you're driven by the
1:43 pm
values and the ethics of that decision. not because you're hoping to grow market share as a result of it was stored allen, head of international marketing partners. thank you for your thoughts and that wraps up our show. i'm chris coburn. berlin, thanks with not just another day. so much is happening all at once. we take time to understand. this is the day an in depth look at current news, events analyzed by experts and critical thinkers. and this is the day weekdays on d, w. sun are driven by merciless greed, brothers are fighting the destruction land grabbers or exploiting the amazon ring

we are seeing the likes of fever. you eva, and other giants crumble under global pressure to take a united front. russian teams are banned from competition. sports events are moved or canceled altogether. sponsorships across all sports and divisions are ended. these are some of the outcomes so far as the international sports community moves to further isolate russia. for 15 years german football club shall co, played with the logo of russia's state owned energy company, gas prom on their shirts. now the partnership worth $9000000.00 euros a year to the club was abruptly cut short and players strode out in altered jerseys for the 1st time on saturday. across the bundis league as 1st and 2nd tears clubs and fans denounced president vladimir putin and his military invasion of ukraine. please for peace could be seen around the grounds. and all games were preceded by
1:46 pm
a moment of silence. similar sentiments were expressed across the sporting landscape around the world. formula one abandoned, the russian grown pre scheduled for september and saatchi while allowing russian drivers to compete under a neutral flag this season. meanwhile, russian president vladimir putin himself a black belt, sudoku has been stripped of his title as honorary president of the international judo federation. the most senior official position he held in the world of sports and european footballs governing body. you a 1st stripped st. petersburg gas. prom arina of the hosting rights for this years . champions league final like shelter you a for has also decided to cut ties with gas prom. the energy giant was one of the organisations key sponsors since 2012. the partnership worth 40000000 years a year had previously already attracted criticism. russia is being told clearly that at present it is unwelcome in the world of sports.
1:47 pm
one of the 1st athletes to openly condemn vladimir putin aggression in ukraine was bloodiest love yet as if it's just weeks ago. you may have seen his face and his call for peace during the winter olympics in beijing. he's the ukranian skeleton athlete who put his no war message out there after one of his runs at the games. as russia was amassing nearly 200000 troops on his country's borders, that his let the ask of it jointly now from north west ukraine. welcome to the w at the i a c and china both said the athletes shouldn't protest but you did so anyway, tell us about that moment. i will not fall. it's brought us. i can call it the quote because they're not mentioned any other cancer, just mentioned my country and that they want to be in my country. and i want to
1:48 pm
piece for people who lives in my country. and you're back home now and you'll get it out of bomb shelters, and you could even be asked to fight. have you heard anything yet? and what they do explain for you is what the situation is like where you are now i am, it's now for a moment on this the play button to your exposure, but i hear it that morning get yesterday evening. so it's absolutely terrible. see what i see and i spoke with my friends around the rain and it's, it's terrible situation. they like rational ducks, kids that civilians it's, it's terrible. it's terrible that our all feminist and you're going suffering now because of this invasion and i hope it will. and sure, that's understandable. have you been spoken to about joining forces to help find?
1:49 pm
has that been a discussion you've had yet? i want to buy a new experience. you know, it's interesting and not a professional sold or i'm professional of that. and so i fight on my lot for, and i fired on my way to support their growth community. i mean, that's it. that's the most important point. you are, of course, in athlete. and you were one of the athletes who was demanding that russia and better roost be suspended from competitions. i mean, despite the international paralympics committee decision, very little is actually change for russian athletes. what did you think when you heard the news is unacceptable? isn't very important to mention that russian audits not only you know, the big sports, but the big sports also like going to cooperate. they all are members of military
1:50 pm
ration, you know, to so they have straight connection to, to the war what you have now. secondly, legs eventually crane is away the bridge in the name of the chapters, and they said they should have strong sanction. but now it looks like nothing's changed for them and they're ready to compete on their national fucking resume and in big games. and also like as we know, the face of the country in some way, some sizes view. so i like they use art was as propaganda. i already got a lot of messages from russia and i show one of them in instagram my in so russian or to use me like good bump in my house. so they, they mines are already in propaganda and it should be suspended from from the sport . thank you for that,
1:51 pm
but so to stay safe. thank you for talking to us and since we talked of ladies love, hear us give it to the international paralympic committee, has indeed band russian and bell russian athletes and competing at the paralympics . previously the i p. c. had said, competitors from the 2 countries would take part as neutrals. however, it has changed that this isn't a day before the beijing games. we do to start with athletes already in china to take part for both world governing body fee for suspended russian teams from all competitions. the decision bands, russia from the upcoming world cup playoffs, the women's heroes, and the men's well cup. here is a look at a frantic few days in world football. as fever was convinced to take a stand. russia hosted the last men's world cup in 2018 russian president vladimir putin and fif abbas johnnie infant tino acted like best friends. even then, many in football were uncomfortable with russia hosting
1:52 pm
a welcome falling. it's 2014 annexation of crimea. now, after the invasion of ukraine through russia, out of this year's tournament, and qatar in november and december, has become the big topic for the globe's biggest sport. even if russia had not even qualified yet for condemns, as well. the use of force by russia and ukraine. violence is never a solution. fee for initially said russia could no longer hold any international matches at home with mutual venues used without any fans. no russian flags or anthems would be permitted, and the national team would be known as football, union of russia, rather than russia. but this was not enough of a punishment for the invasion of ukraine, according to poland, sweden, and the czech republic. those nations were future or potential opponents for the russians. in march is playoffs for katara. after consultations with our players on
1:53 pm
the polish national team, the decision was made that it does not matter in what location we do not want to play against russia. and this way, we want to show our protest against putin's aggression against ukraine. in another, england followed suit in saying they would not play russia for the foreseeable future. this all gave fif and no real wiggle room when it came to russia, playing at the world cup with the international olympic committee, also adding to the pressure. despite infantry knows close bond with putin, he's been left with little choice. let's get a global view now from the group global athlete. kara donovan is a former world champion kickboxer and now speaking to speaking to and for world class athletes around the world. thank you very much for joining us and welcome to the show. we're seeing some unprecedented decisions concerning how reluctant global sports has been in the past to punish russia. is it too little,
1:54 pm
too late in your eyes? yeah, i think like, while there's been a huge amanda statements coming from different sports federations, i think 1st of all, we have to look at the plot, the detail as i like the lympics, for example, on one day they really did possible because they happened to actually sanction their limpid committees of russia and bell roost. and so we need to any go further and it's definitely late in the day. and we have to see more sciences and start with the binding of oxy in russia, or from russia and battery in the pilot. the game started this week. some say that although this is part of sports washing machine, could you tell us what that is exactly and how it works? by well, sports washing is certainly another you concept. it is used by a lot of our talk tar, terry and regimes to cover up. for example, human rights abuses and i know baking lympics par lympics has been widely
1:55 pm
criticized for the use of sports washing. and sports has been an enormous part of russia's political agenda, both domestically and internationally. and so that's why we are calling on the various functions almosha i'm by the way because they will use these games. they will use sport to cover up to cover up on just actions at home and to use this as part of their agenda. and it's something that we are seeing more and more of because the likes of sports, the i o. c and particular they've been complicit in this. they've been very, very happy to sit by and allow these types of countries use forward for all the wrong reasons. you say they've been complicit. do you think it's natural? supposing bodies have i see live from this? do you think they will act differently when they host countries in the future? it, you know, it's hard to answer that question as part to me that the little optimistic, what i have heard people say that this is a huge. there's been
1:56 pm
a huge change now when we see all the sports federations come out with statements like they have with severe sanctions and we have to recognize that's not true. this is only the start. but i do think the fact that there has been so much public pressure, a lot of the pressure is compromise leads and that has forced a small piece to change. and i would be very hopeful that these are going to grow from this and just put more and more pressure on for ventilation to make sure that they don't get away with this kero donovan from after the lead group global athlete . thank you so much for joining us. that's all from me in the sports team here in berlin for more check out our website, d, w dot com, forward slash sports. we leave you with images of solidarity across the different european football leagues. do take care? ah
