a shift in corporate responsibility. i'm 1st cobra, welcome to the program, indian prime minister and remote, he has voided condemning russia for its invasion of ukraine. this week has country again abstained in a un resolution deploring russia's actions, and here is the likely motive. in december modi and russian president vladimir putin signed an armed steel worth billions. russia will deliver its s $400.00 advanced missile defense system. india wants to protect itself against attacks from china and pakistan for more, let's bring in dw correspondent charo cartucker in new delhi char. why does this arm steal? have such a significance for net render modi's government? well, chris, i think it's not just as of the, the entire gamut of this straight relationship with russia is very important for

india because these figures are confidential not released by the government. but a lot of analysts believe that anywhere from 60 to 85 percent of india's infrastructure is rushing back to do the weapons and goodness i to systems. and the most important trade me right now focuses around this f 400 messiah defense system that russia is selling to the us selling to india. india has already been to one unit and i think 4 or 5 or more in the pipeline that need to become. this is something that india went ahead when, in spite of the threat of american sanctions. and interestingly, you with it yet to enforce those sanctions, which has made india and got to go ahead with this be. so overall, this relationship is very important for strategic reasons, as well as for defense reasons, which is possibly why is this thing from taking a very clear cut stand against russia in international fora. taro many companies

from the west have been cutting their tires with russia. how has the indian corporate world been reacting to the russian aggression? i think christine didn't go very well if no waiting to take a cue from the government. and since the government is yet to take a stand against russia, indian corporate have also chosen to remain mom or remain questions about what time they would like to take on the russian economy and doing business in russia. so none of them have taken the stand, for example, like the standard british petroleum has taken. that is something that is missing in india right now. and i think that is largely because of the line that the government up into is doing right now. chris, now, as russia ties with the west are deteriorating, are they likely than to intensify with india as it is the goal of china for well, you interest us a $1000000.00 question right now that everybody is tracking from journalists to

a very damaging commercial decision. however, the upside of that is that they build trust with the range of stakeholders, their consumers, their suppliers, their employees, their investors. so no doubt these companies will have weighed this up before making such a decision. do you see this as a major shift when it comes to responsibilities that corporations have? well, it's certainly very interesting that so many companies are taking action. and the real test is going to be when we look back at these companies in 3 years, 5 years time to see if in fact the promises they've been making are still being honored at that point. or are these just temporary opportunities to get people like us to talk about them? hopefully it's a bit more meaningful than that. and we of course,

now expect companies to take a stand on things like this. now this war has changed a lot here in europe and comes to the perception of how things are going in this union. do you think that that companies will be more sensitive when it comes to doing business in countries with geo political risk? i mean, can we expect them to take a stand even, you know, if in markets that may be more important than the russian market is to them. well, i think they will. i think we expect them to. and you know, if you think back to column cap or neck and nike position saying no, we're going to back this football, american football player who took the knee. you know, that was a risky decision. you could say for nike to potentially alienate several of its consumers. in effect, what it's done is it is improved,

our perception of the mikey brand is a brand that has values that it honors. and so i do think companies are expected now and the leaders, it's not just the brands, it's actually the leaders now as spokespeople on. 5 geo political events and yes, this factors into their risk assessment when they do business in different parts of the world doesn't at the same time, companies have been declaring their solidarity with war torn ukraine. but the margin for error is really thin. here in german supermarket chain, for example, publish an ad would read freedom as a provision against the backdrop of a ukrainian flag that cost a lot of backlash. how far can i should companies go in trying to market their solidarity? well, i think the, the way it works is you don't market your solidarity, you just take the decision and you maybe don't need to make
