ah ah ah, this is dave deputy news live from berlin, mary paul under sage again, despite an, a grade cease fire renewed russian. shelling holds a 2nd attempt to evacuate civilians from the besieged. city officials had begun efforts to move people to safety along a humanitarian corridor. and he wes eyes a deal his supply fighter jets to ukraine. secretary of state antony blake can says the us easing talks with poland to replenish its stock of war plants. if warsaw decides to provide its own jets to its neighbour and hundreds of men line up in the
5:01 pm
capital, keep to join the army united in their resolved to defend their homeland from invasion. ah, i am rebecca writ is welcome to the program. a 2nd attempt to evacuate civilians from ukraine's southeastern city of mary paul has failed. residents were expected to leave the city today during a 10 am to 9 pm local ceasefire. ukrainian officials, se evacuations was stopped due to continued russian shelling and other attempt to evacuate. mary paul and another city besieged by moscow's troops in south east and new crime was also called off. on saturday. both sides accused the other violating a temporary truce. some $200000.00 civilians are trapped in merry paul, which continues to be without water and electricity,
5:02 pm
and is fast running out of food as castilla correspondent, nick conley, his in cave nic. let's start with that situation in mary paul where the say fire has been broken yet again. while it's an extraordinary drama going on there in south countries city, we visited often big, big city on the see of as of that is now surrounded on 3 sides with only the see open and even there, there are russian forces and it is, as you mentioned, increasingly, military and drama, the no power food stops running down no connection. people are even able to make sure their friends and family in other parts the country. a safe will get messages out. the interpretation here and key of the ukrainian loan be that the russians are just not interested in letting the civilians out that this kind of shantarian disaster puts more pressure on ukraine's leadership to make compromise with russia that russia has already basically priced in the reputational damage that this invasion of ukraine has done and is basically going to play hobble. and he was
5:03 pm
important to remember that it's extraordinarily difficult for these 2 sides to reach agreements, even on more technical stuff like this at a time where hundreds, if not thousands of soldiers, of both sides are dying and yet fit, there is just extremely bad blood. i think without outside intervention, some kind of intermediary from the red cross, whatever i think were very difficult for them to get any kind of manageable deal on the, on the ground attorney shocking situation. none of your in care of what the situation is there in the capital and the surrounds well, as you might be able to see by me, keith is deserted. we still couple of hours to go till the curfew. but this is the city that basically seems to be abandoned. it's not quite true. there are lots of people hiding behind the curtains when you see them at the supermarket, you see them kind of peering out occasionally. but on the streets, the most part, it's journalists and soldiers, checkpoints, everywhere, sand bags, and to tank and devices. most of them seemingly improvised everywhere. it's pretty shocking someone like me has lived here before you see the city. basically, exp,
5:04 pm
thing was the city that of see a country that is live with war in the east since 2014, when russia and its crimea, and stoked those separatist conflicts in the east. but that was always a long way away. that was a night train right away here in care of you could always be forgiven for kind of thing. this was just a peaceful european capital anal. russia has brought that war to the streets, care of, and everyone here very anxious about, you know, the reports. we've heard of attempts by ross to try and kill ukraine's democratically elected president zalinski that there could be sleeper agents operating. and now of the russian troops within 20 twitch foreclosures of the capital, even though that advance has now seemingly got stuck some time. they're shocking picture coming out of the north western suburbs of key of your place, called it a pin butcher where there's been extraordinary fighting chip shantarian problems of people trying to get out. but railways and roads shot it is a very eerie situation. hearing you and like i have a race and days we've been saying incredible pictures of men of all ages queuing up to volunteer for the credit army in order to slow rushes advance. we're going to
5:05 pm
take a look not a report about what drives some of those volunteers, nick, and we'll come back to you after these men are determined to fight for their country, even in the face of russian firepower, and without support from nato hearing. keith, they're waiting to sign up. the ukraine armed forces resolved to do their part for the war effort. not send me a war is la care, which is my duty level. i won't be useful if i want to help you. i want to protect . i want to fight back later. i want my family to return to ukraine as soon as possible, and i will do my best. other volunteers stalking up for the battle ahead. an optimistic about victory. we know why we defend our country and our guys that are actually standing there and fighting, ah, russian military forces. they know what they are doing. those guys, they don't,
5:06 pm
we know what we are doing. and that's why we'll, when it's that determination, that's helped inspire volunteers from much further afield to join the fight and creating mimic tree zelinski here for his banker, his barbie. even though the country surround in everybody's jossla is la galvan was there for no illusions of con our romantic ideas of war, old law, i'm going to be some hero, will make a difference, or any of these spots is water. if you could die here, yes, just really going to do 3 was with heavy fighting already reaching the city, the a pin. just outside keep. it looks likely the volunteer, his bravery will soon be put to the test. it's truly hard to imagine. nick, how important all these volunteers for the war efforts and the ukranian army well, it is obviously, i think it 1st and foremost it's about morale. it's about showing these people are
5:07 pm
staying and that they're not running their way, not trying to get abroad, get safety. and of c for now i think it's not so important terms of the manpower ukrainian side. if we believe there figures, obviously there's always an element of a p r in terms of revealing your own losses as opposed to the enemies but the ukraine site. it seems, seeming, it hasn't lost as many men yet as the russian side. but it's about showing that there is that willingness to sacrifice even potentially their lives for the country and a knowledge that if this works drag on which he looks at to for now, that there is the willingness there to got and fight ukraine for now is more dependent on her weapons coming in from the west of ammunition, more supplies. those have been asking for our power for plains and a sofa, and he acro systems. because right now russia is doing very badly in the land will . will there look endless digital social media destroyed russian tanks, but also a fuel vehicles and other bits of infrastructure. they seemingly not able to keep up with the logistics and getting stuck of them to abundant tanks for lack of fuel
5:08 pm
. so i think that's what you great now is really asking for their power antiaircraft guns to prevent russia driving back. it's done its advantage from the bombing cities bombing military installations. and that is the big request now from the current government to its western neighbors. who for now or, you know, keeping back from that, not willing quite to go that next step and potentially draw i from let me put it into the russian leisure date. i believe. nick connelly reporting there from care. nick, thanks very much. i was russia continues, it's assault on ukraine. the united states has indicated it's looking into ways for poland to supply fighter jets to ukraine, u. s. secretary of state anthony blank and said american made f sixteens could be sent to poland to replenish its own stocks. if warsaw decides to send you crime fighter jets from its own flate pilots and in the ukrainian air force are already trained to fly the soviet aeroplanes opening and made the comments on
5:09 pm
a trip to ukraine's neighbor, moldova, we are, we're looking actively now at the question of aeroplanes, the poland they provide to, to ukraine and looking at how we might be able to backfill should pull and decide to produce those are 2 hours of supply those plants with brain cancer. whitman, now he's a historian and retired general of the german army. mr. whitman, welcome to day w. so the u. s. saying, holland could supply possibly supply ukraine with plains, but how would that be received by vladimir putin? what russia see this as nato getting involved in the conflict? well, no. nato, as such, shed does not want to get involved, and that is why the desperate or ukranian appeals for no fly zone or not an option. because there are nato and the superpower, atomic super follow us,
5:10 pm
would be involved with russia. but i have pleaded for almost a year to strengthen the defense capability, novia crane, and for the time being that was with mo, bye, but very effective anti anti tank weapons and planes would be an next step. read your next step by heart. the announcement by the secretary at blink, and this morning i had a denial by the polar side that they would not send me 29 to ukraine. if one does a, my personal opinion is one should not make too much brew. ha! and as for mister president, putting for use as subject geisha wall, which he is conducting against ukraine. he never needed a provocation. he did what he a apparently has planned for years, so we wouldn't should not be too worried about how put in every act save
5:11 pm
the individual it states or step up there, the support of your grain of the grain and on forces. it's all right, so there, sorry to interrupt you this or i just wanted to hear reiterated that noticed on that i want to be people saved is getting involved, but having people countries are sending arms and there is also talk now about western support is providing ukraine with anti aircraft weapons, what's the tactic? they wouldn't that effectively be seen as a no fly zone. and therefore night are getting involved. it is a difference whether nato gets involved or whether nato strengthens the ukrainian or defense capability. many people do not know that at the same time when we negotiated and agreed to the nato, russia founding act in 1997. at the same time,
5:12 pm
a distinct partnership between nato and ukraine was established and nato ukraine commission. so we've always been involved in lodi. is ation all the training on tosses and the men carry their steam jaw australia or rock. it's a very effective and their supply to ukraine has been going on. and they have already shut down a couple of russian airplanes. and they, they, i, well with russia, they have been invaded. and until now it is commonly common, the accepted that individual countries can help you crane to, to step out that up the defenses. and if they get airplanes, as i said, one should not make too much about it. and then the polar share and
5:13 pm
signs on the on the plains must be removed and ukrainian science come on it. and then the training pilots to know these machines. because in the soviet union and in the war so that they were flown by all countries forces, they would just come to poland and then take these planes and go back to your crane . and i hope for the 1st in the 1st instance, what they will tamma on they said 60 kilometers on lloyd, which has been standing in the open for 4 days and days are called whitman format, general, the german army in berlin. thank you very much for your time. thank you. good afternoon. meanwhile tacky has been attempting diplomatic efforts to end the war. president wretched type err to want her spoken by phone with his russian counterpart vladimir putin and urged him to agree to a c spy in ukraine,
5:14 pm
open humanitarian corridors, and to come to a pe steel. turkey has close relations with both moscow and keith, but recently moved to limit the passage of russian warships into the black sea. a longstanding, international agreement allows anchor to block ships from passing through its straits during war time, but it can't prevent them from returning to their home ports. i enjoy now by d. w, correspond at dorian jones in istanbul. dorian talk us through turkey's position here and what's at stake here for her to one by me. turkey will, along with most of the international community shares absolute outreach of the humanitarian catastrophe, does go unfolding ukraine because of russia's invasion for one person. no one has quoted unacceptable and rare public criticism of russia. but beyond that, i mean this is a nightmare for one, because much of his foreign policy has been developed from having very close relations with both ukraine and russia. roches are very key by much of turkey's
5:15 pm
energy incorporating and syria and ukraine is one of turkey's most important partners for economics and defense contracts and in photography. businesses of stopping massive damage from this one invasion. so for one is trying to cover his economy. he fears at this unfolding invasion of ukraine will deal most to conway and he's facing re election next year. so he's desperate hoffman to him for many have tried before him. and so far, failed is early one, some one potent is likely to listen to another one does have close relations with who tin that's been. much concerned is western allies, but i was always argued at some point have relations with both sides. and he has been positioned himself to be a mediator in this conflict. he's repeatedly said that i am ready. i'm here. i'm in the menu with a unique position,
5:16 pm
having good relations with both sides are but for now, putin has rebuffed this and in many ways it seems is quite humiliating for one especially 3rd one spoke with cute in the night before rush to launch the invasion and he received no warning of that invasion which was halted turkey's diplomat stranded in ukraine, and that was seen very humiliating for, for one. but having said that there is a possible dor mediation. turkey claims that you have agreed in principle, but the turkey could hostile foreign minister era meet, meet the meetings between the 2 countries, possibly next week, but no confirmation has been given on that date and time during so far, turkey has shied away from sanctions. is turkey, turkey, likely to join other nato and western nations in bag backing sanctions against russia who took has been very outspoken about sanctions. they say that they don't work counterproductive in many ways to price itself saying with one in the west present. and we can still hope to write,
5:17 pm
and some people are suspicious of talking to see itself in the back door. thank you. don with iraq toki will dismiss that claim. but beyond that, even though turkey's resisting the sanctioned school and even closing his air space through russian play plays like with continuing to provide weapons to you. great and very important, told charming russia resolved to talk very successful. and also it's all important and continued to vic losses. so in many ways this is seen as possibly the most toki is basically citing for anti and thank you very much, dorian jones, forth in his temple. i had a look at some of the other developments in the conflict security forces, and russia have detained nearly 3500 anti war protesters in demonstrations across the country. that's according to an independent protest monitor, rush in place,
5:18 pm
one that organizes and participants of a legal demonstrations would face charges. several western media organizations say they're suspending reporting in russia with many journalists leaving the country. the decision comes after the kremlin pass legislation cracking down on independent reporting. under the new law journalists can face up to 15 years in prison for describing putin's attack on ukraine as an invasion or war. credit card giant mastercard and visa saying there suspending operations in russia, killing the light is blow to the increasingly isolated countries in battled financial system. the move follows crashing economic sanctions imposed by the west in response to the invasion. hope frances has deplored what he calls the rivers of blood. he is following flowing in ukraine, following the russian invasion. he called for the creation of humanitarian corridors for refugees. and to return to negotiations, the pontiff also said he was sending to cardinals to the country with aid. monday

with the united nations says more than 1500000 people have now fled you crime described the exodus exodus as the fastest growing refugee crisis in europe since world war 2. the largest number of ukrainian refugees has crossed into poland. many have found support and shelter in the city of krakow, the city has sent out facilities to provide child care and all that help to get people on their fate. they deputies max santa spoke to some of the new arrivals. christina lives all animals, but her absent favorite are dogs. the 4 year old fled the war and ukraine with her mother. she fear their journey ended here. and the poles city of crocker. i had to leave because it was dangerous for my child until the war. i was very heavy there we haven't. i had a lot of plans there. i like to do our knee and i come back in like
5:20 pm
like a tourist not like a refugee. so christina spends her days here at the doctor, henry jordan, you said that has a special program for the new arrivals. korean kids are look after they are served meals, and most of the kids can be cute with us before help us a lot and they support us and they are ready to help us to give a lot of things for us for free. but i feel myself better when i know that i'm independent person. the attack on neighboring ukraine has brought upon a strong wave of solidarity with people all over poland, pitching and, and trying to help, just like here and cracow. the city of cracow always had ukrainian influence prior to the war, more than 100000 people of ukrainian descent lived here. and despite more and more
5:21 pm
people coming and no real long term planning in sight, people here tell me they are committed to stand by their side. like those working at the you center director barth warming court. so rick wants to help children forget about the war. kids movies in ukrainian, arist start god need them what to do with the screw. the few days ago they were at school or in kindergarten, on that. now they're in a completely different country, surrounded by people who speak a different language than dumping similar but they found a place where they can meet other children and also watch a movie in their native tongue. but with this calm them down, it makes them happier. that was not a vacuum, but he up to him, he's been staying happy, may be easier for the kid. the parents, however, will have to start thinking about the future soon. i be at housing jobs for where their kids go to school. i don't wanna land, but i have to because i have my child and i have to think about her as well. i plan
5:22 pm
on leave for one month. not more, but mostly the situations like many other ukrainian refugees. though sophia petrov took hopes that the war will end soon and that she and her daughter might be able to return to a free country of a more on the situation of refugees in poland. let's talk to data, but he reported has a walter. who's in chem michelle, near the border with ukraine? tessa described for us the situation where you are i make she ride at the refugee center, just a few kilometers off the border and behind me you can see they are refugees being howard by volunteers. and there are a lot of volunteers here. they have come from everywhere. obviously there are a lot of polish people here, but also from france, from germany, re spoken to people all the way from canada, from india. and they come here and lend a hand so that people can get food, can get water. a warm blanket if they need it. so really on a physical level,
5:23 pm
everything is being done for them. but what people really need at the moment is some time to rest some time to process what they've seen. and i mean, they have seen horrible things. this war is really going on now it's raging and people come here with terrible experiences. and luckily at this refugee center, they can find a bit of rest. they have been bad that have been put up for them. we spoke to one woman, she came all the way from kia through live even now she's here been traveling for 3 days and she told us she had to wait at a bust up for 12 hours in the cold. so you can only imagine what these people have been through. absolutely, and harrowing stories you've been up and down the border and race and days. what else have people been telling you? i think the story that touched me the most to day was right at the border. we were young at the point where the man had to say good bye to their wives because man can't currently leave ukraine if they are the age of 18 to 60 and there was
5:24 pm
flooding me. he brought his wife and his child to the border to see them safe and sound crossing over into poland. but he couldn't, couldn't cross with them. he had to leave. and i witnessed this moment where he had to say good bye to his newly born child. and his wife and that was something that is really on everyone's minds here. where's my husband? is he still safe? he's back in ukraine. i'm here. this is what we hear over and over again. and people are now there, but they're desperate about their loved ones. but they wanna keep being hopeful, and that's really what we hear a lot here. they hope that this war is going to end. they don't want to settle, they don't want to find work in western europe. they want to go back to their country where they belong. cancer, i'd certainly sounds and looks like things are very well organized and coordinated there with more people arriving every day. how much capacity does poland have? are there enough resources to help every one?
5:25 pm
resources really isn't the problem at the moment. there's water, there's food, there's shelter, there's buses taking people to other places if they need transportation. i think what could be a problem at some point is really the energy level of the volunteers because everything rests on their shoulders. and these people, they're using their weekends, they're taking time off of work to be here. but at some point they will have to return to work. they will have to return to their families. we talk to one guy who's been working for 24 hours straight. he says he hasn't slept since and these people there will be exhausted at some point. and so he summed it up, saying we took on a 1000000 people here in poland already we'll take on another 1000000. but at some point we will need help. true, incredible effort and some hot breaking stories. tessa walter at the polish cranium border thanks very much. a russian gymnast at the world comp in doha has provoked outrage by wearing
5:26 pm
a symbol in support of russian aggression against ukraine. when collecting his bronze medal 20 year old ivan coolly act on the letter said, a russian war symbol that represents victory. it appears on the front of vladimir putin's tanks and all the military vehicles deployed to ukraine. kodiak shed the podium with the gold medalist ukrainian sta. ilia kaufman. you're watching data, but you use has a reminder of the mine stories coming out of you crime, the ukrainian city of mary who paul is on the stage again after an upgrade. safe fire was broken, renewed russian chilling has halted a 2nd attempt to evacuate residents to safety along a humanitarian cargo. and u. s. secretary of state, anthony lincoln says, washington is working on a deal with poland to supply new crime with fighter jets under the deal. the u. s. would replenish poland. stock of war pines if warsaw decides to send its soviet era across to you prior to news update this hour. we'll have more news for you
