[000:00:00;00] a tooth . ah, this is the, the be news, live from berlin. fierce combat rages on multiple fronts in ukraine. wash and forces are advancing into the sea. city of mario pulled reports of fighting in the streets. for the 300000 people, remain tracked in the city. also coming up were on board the u. s. naval aircraft, carrier, harry s. truman, patrolling nato, air space, plus raging has so far failed to condemn russia's invasion of ukraine,
9:01 pm
saying only that it was peace. that china could give its allied military or financial support in the wall and a helping hand. thousands of volunteers assist ukrainian refugees arriving at berlin's main station every day for most just another stop on a long journey. ah, i'm really mohammed welcome to the program. russian forces have entered the center of the besieged city of mar, your pool, a key port in the south east. that's been under attack for several weeks. taking mario pola seen as a key strategic move for moscow, and would open up a land corridor between russia and crimea. ukrainian troops anal fighting with russian forces over the site of the as old style plant in mario pool. one of the

largest steel plants in europe, the cities it says the facility has seen, has been destroyed by russian air strikes. a warning from view as may find some of the images in this report, the study ukraine's port city of merrier poll lies in ruins. this used to be a shopping center. now it's just a shell, dead bodies, litter the streets. those still standing left with almost nothing. rushes, assault on the city has not let up. with reports, russian forces have now entered the center. against this background,
9:03 pm
ukraine's president is demanding fresh peace talks. miss everson evelina very well was insisted on negotiations from all we have always offered dialogues, offered solutions for peace, new door, not just the 23 days of invasion, which will, and i want everyone to hear me now. hutcher, especially in moscow, shows it's time to meet us after time to talk about it. it's time to restore territorial integrity and justice for ukraine. but it doesn't appear. russia. leader is listening. boy, on friday, vladimir putin spoke at a mass rally held in moscow to mark the 8th anniversary of russia's annexation of crimea, to adoring fans. he spelt out what he says, his invasion of ukraine is all about. even there is ways to end the suffering and the genocide, that's the main reason, the main motive, and the aim of the military operation that we have started in danbury and ukraine.
9:04 pm
the numbers you, you know, great in ukraine's capital, keep these people are now homeless. the latest victims of wall talk of peace seems a long way off. database fanny ashar is in live in the west of ukraine. fanny, the humanitarian situation is desperate in many parts of the country. could you just bring us up to speed on the evacuations? are people able to leave and unfortunately it remains desperate for millions and millions, hugh and ukraine. now there was some positive news, however, by the deputy prime minister of ukraine, who said that some of the humanitarian corridors that were set up to date, or some of them actually worked in parts of the ones region. so in dumbass region and also as surrounding a key. however, when it comes to mary paul and we have seen that report before, the situation really remains very di are in fact award. the ukrainian, or for it is claim,
9:05 pm
is that bosses that are supposed to go into my report and basically help evacuate people. we are not let in, allegedly, not let in our by russian forces. we cannot independently verify if this is the case. what we do know, however, that hundreds of thousands of people remain trapped in my report. and we know, of course, that the situation there with lack of electricity, lack of food, is really a situation where you really wonder and we have seen some report yesterday just for how long people will be able to hold out in such a situation. in fact, reports were suggesting yesterday is some people try to leave by foot on foot. trying to escape this harrowing situation. mary paul and where you are in la viv. they've been taking in refugees from all over ukraine in recent weeks. what's the situation when it comes to their people here are very much welcoming they
9:06 pm
try to provide shelter for those the need for those hundreds of thousands of people who arrive here internally displaced people that numbers of course, around millions in the entire country. and of course, we know that more than 3000000 people have left your brain. now the may or however, of leave you may clear it cannot go on forever. he says there must be more international aid international organizations. he says, need to step up to actually help living financially. and also he says it cannot continue that are different places, pools or churches, etc, being used as temporary shelter. he actually criticized international and yields for are underestimating even prior to the full scale invasion on february 24th underestimating this is going to happen and now not being prepared enough while the un says that yes, they agree. they have been some challenges here, of course, on the ground to be opperation or but at the same time, they also see that they've deployed tons of medical aid, for example, to sue me. however, when you ask people who are here on the ground that's really necessary,
9:07 pm
they will tell you it's not financial aid by and yours. what they want is to have this airspace closed. so there is no shelling and nor an assault basically that continues to hit. so many parts of this country, ukraine's president zalinski has called for peace talks with russian president vladimir putin. but what do you have on that? we definitely do not have so far any reaction from the kremlin. in fact, some observer say that a vladimir putin is not going to have any direct talk with president lensky as long as not more territory again, is made here on the ground. so even though this is something that president zelinski has said over and over again, trying to reach out. and of course, have been various talks various negotiations between ukrainian or russian delegation at least for now, unfortunately, doesn't look like that. there's going to be any short term consequence into himself,
9:08 pm
a cease fire, be just a limited use fight even to get back to the 1st question, actually to get that other creation going on. a much larger scale. in fact, for now, according to our numbers in ukraine, only about 190000 people could be evacuated from this are very heavily. shad sheldon encircled a places and parts of ukraine. so for now there is no reaction to it from the permanent em. nobody knows. just how much more restriction destruction rather is going to happen and what that means was civilians until there is an end to all of this that started more than 3 weeks ago here in ukraine. and finally, the president has also announced assistance for ukrainians that have been displaced by this invasion. what kind of support are we looking at? indeed, we are basically looking at a catalogue issue like of different promises for one. he promised that all those people have been trolling displays, for example,
9:09 pm
here to live are probably is job so they can stay here and basically go on with their lives, even though nobody really knows just how far it is war. and this escalation, a going to a com also here to the western part of ukraine. so you promised various things and people here on the ground say, probably the reason why president zalesky is promising. all of this is to make sure that people have maintained a positive spirit of resistance until this is all over if it is over. but nobody knows when the deputy is funny for shar, speaking to us from live. if thank you, fanny. russia says it has used a hypersonic missile to destroy a warehouse of weapons belonging to the ukrainian army, russia, military release, images of what it said was a warehouse being destroyed. but did not say if this was the building in question. it also showed cockpit video of ukrainian military vehicles being targeted. moscow
9:10 pm
says it's hypersonic kin. gel missiles can travel up to 2000 kilometers at several times the speed of sound allowing them to evade defense systems. while the use of those missiles is almost certain to heighten concerns within nato, he alliance is currently sending more troops to its eastern border. the u. s. alone will soon have more than 100000 troops across all of europe. a presence not seen on the continent almost 20 years. and it's not just on land. american ships are underway in the european waters, including the aircraft carrier, harry s truman. t w is steven beardley was on board the ship in the mediterranean and sent us this report. the constant wine of jet engines, day and night, aboard this carrier, for us as harry s. truman lodges f, 18 super hornets. like these daily to patrol nato's eastern flank for stray russian jets. there are few on the sky with nato partners and remain on station for hours
9:11 pm
under nato command. it's a level coordination. the alliance has been practicing for decades to day with added urgency. ah, hello decks. the pressure is always high. now the chance of an encounter with russian aircraft added to it. yes, it's in the back of m i. but i think that the level training we've gotten in our expectations relative to our rules of engagement as such that we're in a position to, to really deal with whatever comes with the truman is more than air power. it's accompanied by missile carrying destroyers, almost certainly a submarine, thousands of sailors work to keep operations going. they've been at sea for months, and no one knows how long the deployment will last. carriers like the truman are classic symbol of u. s. a. nato power projection. the ability to deliver military might almost that
9:12 pm
will around the world for nato members. that's reassuring for the current conflict in ukraine, all this fire power still doesn't have much use. nato's focus instead has been preventing the war from widening. that's why the us wants these deployments to be visible. it's wide invites reporters aboard. and it's why the navy secretary has come to the truman for a visit. i would argue that the situation is quite stable here in the mediterranean sea. we have russian vessels that are out here, the american vessels, we have french vessels, we have italian vessels, we have spanish vessels. and it's a piece of situation here, as long as the russians continued to be 8. and so, and that's what we want them to do. a message amplified by truman's presence that a native not yet at war believes that can still deter one through strength. while stephen bears the files that report and joins me in the studio. so german is acting under nato and earlier say we had that russia has announced the use of hypersonic
9:13 pm
cruise missiles. what message does that send to nato? first of all, it's terrible for ukraine. of these things are already on the battlefield, but you'd have to believe this is also a very clear message for nato. russia and china have been seen as being very advanced in the development of these missiles to us a little bit further behind. so this will heighten those fears, that this could be seen further, and in a bit of a conflict, and especially a wind one, you know, these missiles are incredibly fast, they have a long range and they are precise. and those things mix together, make them very dangerous. especially for larger ships like the truman like aircraft carriers. and so, you know, it's been said for a number of years now that the aircraft carrier may actually be on the way out in an era of precision missiles. and i think this will help raise those fears. and what was the mood like amongst the sailors and pilots? he meant, yeah, i mean, it's some, you know, it's hard to say in one sense because you're brought on to an aircraft carrier only for so much time you're escorted around by the military. they have you talk to
9:14 pm
those that they want you to talk to. and they have a message that they obviously want to send, as i said in the report, they want to project strength. they want to project resolve. i have been on aircraft carriers before. i have been on other ships. and i would say that i didn't really sense that there was any sort of war footing or anything like that. this is, you know, a bunch of guys who are a bunch of men and women who are frankly carrying out their missions and who are doing a number of things this, this air patrolling that i reference there. that's only one of the things that they're doing. and over the years, we have seen a number of russian incursions into nato territory. so that in of itself isn't new . so there's probably a lot of lessons pass down because of that. but of course, the situation is high and right now the tensions are heightened and of course, you fear any sort of mistake if there is some sort of an encounter. some might see this patrol as possible escalation. what's your assessment? i mean, nato is a defensive alliance. for europe and, you know,
9:15 pm
it's job is to reassure that in case this war widens, that there will be a response in the paradox of military operations is that you often have to show a lot of strength and deploy a lot of things to ensure that nothing happens that's where the paradox of the turns. but of course that also means that again, if there's a mistake, if anything goes wrong on makes about judgment, then we have all this military material out there that it could be consequential. and that's why these guys train all the time. that's why they take it very seriously. but these military alliances, this is what they're there for, is that constant reassurance that constant message of we are there. ok, steven busy. thank you very much. while native horses are staying firmly outside ukraine, others are heading there in droves to help fight russian forces. it appears that thousands of ukrainian nationals living abroad have heated their president's call to come and defend their homeland. not all have military training. the now during the many ordinary ukrainian civilians who are taking up arms for the 1st time at

the polish border with ukraine and exodus of people desperate to escape the war. but not every one here is heading west. with our below, sofa is waiting to cross the border to a native ukraine. they who i have 3 years military experience. so i'm going to defend ukraine. there's nothing for me in poland. my husband and i will go fight together. legal doesn't get em. since the outbreak of war, over 3000000 people are estimated to aflac ukraine, but polish authorities say that over 200000 ukrainians have returned to the home country. many of them to fight. rosa is keen to join the territorial defense force. a militia with little military experience and hardware with those it's you that a lot on a young with on the well because there are no guns for everyone in the territorial

their country. 3 weeks of war have taken a toll on ukrainian forces, but with ukrainians, determined to resist the russian invasion. there is no shortage of those willing to make the ultimate sacrifice. ah, we look at some of the other developments in the conflict. hollands prime minister has called for a complete blockade on all trade between russia and the you, while touring polish muscle thought polish missile factory. he said russia ships carrying russian goods should be barred from entering european seaports and or trade by land band to belgians prime anessa. alexandra de crew says he's kind of his country will not scrap its nuclear plants in 2025 as planned . that's the med concerns of energy security due to the ukraine war to react as will now be able to operate for further 10 years as europe seeks alternative energy

sources to russian oil and gas on wednesday. again, concerns a growing that china could offer russia a lifeline as the war with ukraine enters its 4th week. russian form, in a sense, again, lab drug scene here early this week told him to fax that russia and china needed to think how they were going to carry on hickey's western powers of undermining the international order with the new sanctions targeting moscow. on friday, you as president joe biden, ward china not to give support to russia's invasion. so far, beijing has failed to condemn the invasion. only saying it wished to see an end to the conflict. i spoke to sarah cook, a senior research analyst for china, hong kong, and tie one from the us government think tank, freedom house. and i began by asking her if western fears that china could start supporting russia in the conflict are justified. well, in practice, when you look at what china is doing, there is some support happening. it's happening not necessarily in terms of media,
9:20 pm
military assistance, but absolutely on the information space, it's happening. chinese state media and couldn't run global social media platforms, but also on domestic platforms. are, you know, on the nightly news are echoing mosque of this information saying earlier that the lensky headlight is saying that there are bio labs and those kinds of demand conspiracy theory. and so, you know, that kind of support is actually happening in that case. beijing, the actions are speaking lower than words. i think what, you know, we're seeing on the financial side. some again, why support? they're still buying. we are so buying fuel. so the fact that beijing is not, you know, shutting off the russian economy and is trying to, you know, it's kind of indirectly continuing to support. it is very much real action that does help russia. so what could that support look like?
9:21 pm
how we directing it more towards financial support or military support unlikely to see china, really overtly giving military support to russia that we wouldn't know. and i do think that it's a good sign that president biden has, you know, told you know, told she specifically that that's not a good idea. i think, addressing that in advance is why i think in terms of some of the financial support . again, i think these kinds of trade relation, other things related to payment systems that seems more likely to me to be what could continue. but i think what's really notable is also a china not doing when we look at the way in which the regime has used economic leverage to silence voices abroad and new sanctions and lithuania, because relations in taiwan against norway when they gave lucia about peace prize. and so many other examples across the world to get what they want. it's still notable that they're not doing anything to try to apply along those lines to try to
9:22 pm
apply pressure on russia. you know, to change it to see the invasion of ukraine or, or to, to be more humane. it's a military activity. so i think again, actions speak louder than words in terms of also what china is not doing as much as what it may be doing. and not all these western sanctions imposed on last moscow going to bring beijing and russia closer together. you know, i think it's certainly pushing russia closer to china. you know, i think china probably in a lot of ways going to want to sell to go away. they're facing their own coven, crazy with norma crime, now actually really spreading in china. so i think it's certainly pushing moscow closer to beijing. i think we'll have to see in what ways that type of assistant takes form, whether it's in terms of payment systems, trade. i think also just things like you're seeing that russian internet with the increased censorship starting to marry the chinese internet
9:23 pm
a bit more. so how much of that model or any assistance there is provided. so, you know, i think it might be more along those types of things and things that might, that may be more directly related to the actual conflict in ukraine. because really important to the, trying to retain a facade of neutrality. from that perspective. sarah cook speaking to us from freedom health a short while ago. well, more and more ukrainians are choosing to flee their homeland. poland alone has taken in over 2000000 refugees, but not all of them are staying in poland, choosing instead to head on to other countries. the german capital, not far from the polish border, has become a major transit hub, is catherine was the last gate report. these volunteers are here to have refugees arriving around the clock at the main train station in berlin, germany more than 15000 people have come to help today, i wanted to move on to myself and find out how it all organize every 15 to 20
