ah ah ah. 2 this is dw news alive from berlin, fierce resistance seeds, ukraine retake, ground, and the brushes plans for lightening offensive improvements. intelligence reports a ukraine has regained territory west of keep. the price paid by ukraine's population has been high. also coming up on the show, the united states and europe announced a new energy partnership with the u. s. to boost supply of liquefied natural gas to market. this year president joe biden says, russia's brutal attack on ukraine should not be subsidized through fuel payments

and feeding refugees instead of fighting at the front. if i take the gun, i will do a just her one of the worst soldiers in the world. but if i take knife and go to the kitchen, i can be one of the best in the world. one of your friends, best known ches, tells us how he is quite literally serving his country. ah, i manuscripts mckinnon. thanks so much for joining us. there are signs of ukrainian forces gaining ground and pushing back russian forces. intelligence reports, a ukraine has retaken ground, west of keith and destroyed a ship in russian, held a territory. now when russia launched its invasion, a month ago, expected to take ukraine in a lightning offensive, yes, against all odds,
1:02 pm
ukrainian forces continue to keep one of the world's biggest armies at bay. but that resistance has come at a terrible price. ukrainian forces pushing back and destroying a russian ship at the port city of bit of dance. this was one of the most glaring displays of keith's resistance against moscow's advance on the front line. and he to pin just outside the capital, keep ukrainian force. so say they have repelled the russians with the series of counter attacks. he shall you thinking of the russians don't have the combat power . my men are hitting their supplies, and keep armed citizens would be shooting from every window and door. china venzano, ukraine's defences are holding bloody me up hooton's hopes of a lightening war. dashed rushes offensive has yet to reach odessa on the

black sea. but people here have been stealing themselves for weeks. volunteers flocked to the beach not to enjoy the sun, but the feel sand bags for barricades. they want to help whatever it takes and they believe in victory. no matter how. by sedation, no. in maria, holding argue, it doesn't matter who we but this battle comes at a high price. cities like mother, you pull, almost burned to the ground and turned into a ghost town. and the human toll. it's hard to verify how many people have been killed in this war. in a crematorium and keep dozens of earns lay unclaimed. the relatives of the dead have had to flee and leave their loved ones behind. officials in the ukrainian port city of mario full believed some 300 people could
1:04 pm
have died in last week's russians strike on assess at their hundreds of people with sheltering in the building in the center of the besieged city when it was hit. maria pull is a strategic port, an industrial center, and has been under heavy bombardment for weeks civilians trapped there have little food power or running water. and joining us from the western ukrainian city of levine is all correspondent. that funny, fletcher funny, 300 people are said to have died in the bombing of the sad and mario pl. last week . tell us, what more are you hearing about that? local authorities, emory pool are remaining in this conjunctive. and this speculation formula could have died because it's really hard just to have the complete number of casualties there when this attack happened last week. and i, after all point their point out there that in big letters in russia, it said children in front of the theater. tried to prevent that. something like
1:05 pm
this can take place an attack on basically internally displaced people who just where they are trying to are some hold on, hoping that they could escape this horror or no, it's unclear how many people were in the building last week for who the number 1000 . as a result we cannot really verify and know what the exact number but a loaner report that apparently so many people have died. it clearly tells you that this and it's hack, not just only sent shock waves t across ukraine, but also so many parts of the road as people are wondering just how far this a rush, an attack against you. crane is going to go as they claim they just want to fulfill their plan, which is about the minute arising this country. now we're hearing the ukraine has said it sank a russian supply ship. what could that mean for ukrainian morale? could that be a boost?
1:06 pm
a given the fact that this is not just a very strategic pull, they're very close to my poll about one and a half hours under normal circumstances. but also the fact that ukraine, of course, needs to somehow keep up the spirit here among those who want to resist the people at the front line, or people who return to ukraine even here to the town of live in west and ukraine to show resistance by simply returning to war torn countries. so any success or that can be seen as a success, but ukrainian forces is something that really the ukrainian government is clinging on to this is something they direly need to keep the spirit job. we shall not forget that this war has been going on all going on for more than a full weeks and what else is there to come? so it's very important, but in terms of, in terms of what it signals in terms of a military success, we shall not forget either that russia remains superior given the number of troops given the military gear. they have. ukraine is also accusing russia. the ducting
1:07 pm
thousands of civilians evacuated from cities such as mario full tell us more about those accusations. that's quite interesting actually because ukraine claims about 400000 people have been forced forcibly removed from ukraine on that very same or similar number more. but more than 400000 was also the number rush you use, but they painted a different picture. they said that these people wanted to leave voluntarily, and that they are helping them even financially. so, claims and counterclaims there, which of course doesn't change the situation on the ground, which is that at least $100000.00 people remain trapped in mario poll. not only they are also in heavily shout channel, jeremy if a places like how to keep sue me and others, so the humanitarian catastrophe keeps suffocating. so many parts of ukraine, regardless of what we cannot verify yet because we cannot talk to people who apparently have been taken to russia or not. this is something that we will know as
1:08 pm
soon as actually we have access to talk to people. and funny, just briefly, what's the sense amongst ukrainians about how much longer they can keep going under these circumstances the people i be speaking to are the over the past week, for example, they keep saying they want to resist. there is no way that ukraine is going to give up any land, but at the same time, of course is growing frustration because they do see all the video links that a president the lensky strike, to basically call on political lead us in a very emotional way but on the other hand, there's disappointment that all the promises by for a politicians fall short of the expectations of ukrainians. so people want to resist, but at the same time, at the very same time, they do want that the international political decision makers step in and increase their support militarily in any way they can can if a child in levine, ukraine,
1:09 pm
thank you so much. the u. s and the you have announced to plan to reduce european countries dependents on russian gas at a joint news conference with you. commission chief or sla underline president joe biden said the u. s. would increase its deliveries of liquefied natural gas to europe by 15000000000 cubic meters this year. now that would be replacing 110th of russia's gas supply. he also said the current crisis is an opportunity to boost renewable energy sources. we're coming together to reduce your vendors on russian energy. putting is issued rushes energy resources, of course i manipulated neighbors. and so as yours is yours, the province to drivers war machine. this initiative focuses on 2 core issues. one helping europe reduces to pregnancy on russian gash as quickly as possible. secondly, reducing europe's demand for gash overall. like an across anal straight to brussels,
1:10 pm
where all of this has been happening and we can speak to a bureau chief that alexandra phenomena. alexandra, tell us how significant is the steel between the e u and the u. s. while the deal is significant, no doubt about that. the united states and the european union are showing that they are united and ready to take on the challenges that both sides are facing. their are deepening, their energy partnership, promising to produce more renewable energy through use greenhouse gases, gas emissions. and of course, the most important aspect of this partnership is the you asked, promising to deliver at least 15000000000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas to europe, to in this year, to help you out to be less dependent on russian gas. however, we have to say that that suggests 10 percent of russia of what russia is delivering
1:11 pm
every year, so it is not going to be enough. however, every thing can bad is aimed at helping europe be less dependent on russian gas and stabilize the markets is welcome here and the run up to the sun. many observe as expected, biden would try to pressure the you to follow the u. s. as lead and cut off a russian gas and ports completely not hasn't happened. even though we know that several members of the blocks members were in favor of such a move. tell us more about that. so this is caution is still going on. there are some members states, for instance, poland he would like would like to see tougher sanctions on russia. total ban on energy imports from russia. the thinking behind that is that it is european money, presumably that is also financing 14th war on russia. but there are other members, deeds hungry, austria, and 1st and foremost, germany who are saying we need to 1st diversify our energy supplies. we need
1:12 pm
time to do that. and there are saying it's not possible right now to cut of or all imports from russia and the job german chancellor. olive schultz told us yesterday that there is another aspect to all of it that it's important to have still some sanctions that could be introduced. if had a situation is getting worse in ukraine. d. w, brussels bureau chief, alexander phenomena. thanks so much and talk about the german perspective. now we have our chief political correspondent, melinda crane in the studio. melinda, welcome. and now, when this conflict started, the german government made this historic decision to suspend the north stream to pipeline bringing gas from russia to germany. yet it's hesitant to move beyond that, as we just heard, that they don't want to stop importing russian energy completely. explain to us why
1:13 pm
. well, germany is significantly more dependent on russian natural gas than most other e u. member states. and germany has a very powerful industrial sector, which gets a lot of its electric power from natural gas fueled power plants. so it would indeed cause a lot of pain to cut off those supplies. cold turkey as it were. and in fact, chancellor will have schultz told the parliament that this week saying that it would hurt industry, it would cost jobs and could plunge germany and even europe into a recession. nonetheless, the fact is that even though germany is dragging its feet on an official stop, it is in fact moving very fast behind the scenes to diversify away from russian fossil fuels. and in fact, the economy and climate minister says that on oil and on coal, he thinks that objective will be accomplished by the end of this year,
1:14 pm
which is quite extraordinary. and that by 2024, germany can probably also be totally off of russian natural gas. so how we see, and by the way, already got it, shared down now from 55 percent of natural gas supplies coming from russia to actually 40 percent 15 percent reduction in just a matter of weeks. so that's pretty remarkable. he's doing that among other things, by making deals with big liquid natural gas suppliers, like could tar in the united arab emirates, the minister travel there this week to make deals with them. and, and in fact, hopes that by diversifying this very crucial energy insecurity can be reduced. let me just pick up there on the an economy environment minister of a hub, x trip to the middle east. now, guitar and the united arab emirates, that they're not exactly bastions of democracy and human rights all day. so could we see this as germany simply swapping out of one questionable energy supply to
1:15 pm
another to some degree, except that the basis would be more diversified than re not relying entirely on one questionable supplier. and i think the fact is in energy policy, there is an enormous amount of reality of pragmatism. and in fact, the economy minister, he's from the green party. this would not have been his preferred mission at the beginning of his term to run off to the middle east to negotiate oil and gas deals . but the fact is, pragmatism is called for at this moment because germany has a crucial short term problem to solve. he's also working on the longer term problem, which is the harmonization, and even those deals with guitar, u e, include a component that would try to boost renewable energy supplies into producing hydrogen. as a substitute for gas, a chief in its international correspondent melinda credit, thank you. so much now the russian onslaught has sent millions of ukrainians
1:16 pm
searching for shelter. many left the homes in a hurry taking only what they could carry. and for many of those arriving hungry in levine, there's been a pleasant surprise though, provided by one of ukraine's top chefs. he donnelly's, i mean, se this. it hid his kitchen in levine and western ukraine. me if you need a free meal and the eve, just ask for menu number 2, master chef it again. corporate tango is crafting and daily meal for refugees. and just because it's free doesn't mean it's not going me going to be like that about the gravy. that's i'm fees and the on while much global tank. it was certainly one of the most well known ships ukraine. he won the reality show master chef ukraine in 2015 and had a restaurant in here which he left behind the very day. russia and baited as
1:17 pm
a man of fighting age corporate tank cannot leave the country. what have to enlist at the military called that he will do anything to help you frame. but as a soldier, he wouldn't be much help. my world is like being quarrelled. you know, i will allow b and everyone. it's like my world. that's why i'm thinking that the, if i take the gun, i will delay just her one of the worst soldiers in the world. but if i take knife and then go to the kitchen, i can be one of the best in the world. to day his 1st customers show up around 11 a. m. this couple arrived in the v from the central ukrainian city of zap, arissa a week ago. my name is melissa. we heard about eve can cup a tank o for my smartphone from facebook crew. he's doing a good thing. we're very grateful to him. great in such difficult times, he's made a menu for us, for the refugees were very grateful. the free menu number 2 is paid for by
1:18 pm
profits from menu number one, which attracts those looking to support the cause and rub shoulders with a celebrity. chef is incurs, lie of lust nickerson, that my wife heard about him on tv. but for my land line, jim kilometer tele button now, but she told me about it and we decided to come and see if there was really a free menu for refugees. we wanted to blood and support the restaurant. salenti lawyers only promote to have less nicole sticking mcgee, m a for now the bistro is called others, but that name says club tango could change. nothing right now in the vive can be set in stone. now fridays for future campaigners are holding protests across the world. busy to demand action be taken to stop the climate crisis. one is taking place here in the german capital berlin. the student led movement is calling for an end to the use of fossil fuels,
1:19 pm
also demanding an end of the war in ukraine, which is being partially funded by european payments for russian gas, coal, and oil. now they say both climate change and russia's war can be controlled by switching rapidly to renewable energy. and we are joined by d. w correspondent benjamin alvarez group. who's that in the center of berlin. benjamin, give us a sense of the atmosphere there at the protest. as you can see in the lot of people that started this protest next to germany's economy, ministry with it, demands full minutes to hobbit to solve the inputs of coil whole of gas. and there were already some shouts of full solidarity with ukraine and against the war in russia. we'll keep walking towards brenwood date. we're the, we'll expect it to be a few speakers later on. and they say that these crisis odd united,
1:20 pm
so we've heard several shouts and seen several signs. also with its solidarity with ukraine is the same time is pressuring the german government to look into what's happening to take action with climate change. and also regarding the war in rush in ukraine. so the specific demands are basically to stop bringing energy over from russia. is that correct? that's right, to say that those prices are in, in some way connected as well. they saying that the war that russia is also the invasion of russia and ukraine is funded by the european union with hundreds of millions of euro's every day. this would fridays for future germany sat and that's where they want to see concrete action a to see how also renewable energy sources can be also be implemented quickly. and germany should also react not just by words,
1:21 pm
but also by action. would it be right to say that the friday future news meant that for a sort of moving to an anti war agenda rather than just a climate agenda? was several shouts with a saying that ukraine has a solidarity, was stand with ukraine, the well to, to russian speakers that set that they are protesting, something that they cannot do freely in russia without fearing to be detained. so i think it's a mix of both. we've heard several shouts, a referring to the war in ukraine, but also referring to the climate crisis. and as i said already, they say that both crisis are connected. also looking to the pendency that germany has, with a fossil fuel cooling, rushes war in ukraine. a fossil war as well. so there are a lot of child by saying that this crisis of the climate crisis should be tackled right away. and not when this conflict is over we can hear how loud it is. we can see how many people are that has there been any reaction from the government
1:22 pm
will refer to day in the morning was as states, a press statement that for the cabbage. the economy minister and vice chancellor gave today saying that they already have reached important milestones. and i think it makes sense that this statement was and that he made this statement only a few hours before these pro to start until they started at 12 to gate. this statement at 930, so we are expecting to hear more from police supporting these photos as well and trying also to increase the pressure on the german government to handle now in regard to both crises, the war in ukraine, but also the climate crisis. dw correspondent benjamin alvarez, group reporting from centreville and thank you. all right, let's take a look at some of the other stories that we're following for you atlas. our 48 people have been killed in twin bomb attacks in central somalia. the 1st blast

killed 2 lawmakers and their guards. it was followed by a car bomb outside the hospital where the injured were taken for treatment. the militant group alger babb was claimed. responsibility authorities in australia say the great barrier reef is suffering a mass bleaching event. the world's largest curl reef system has been under heat stress from warmer seeds. it's the 4th time a major coral die off has happened on the reef since 2016. now to a major shock in men's football, european champions, italy will miss november's world cup after losing that play off semi final to north macedonia. an injury time goal from alexander tri, coffee sealed the one nail when and palomo and left italy stunned. less than a year after their triumph, the years north macedonia on through to the world cut and can tell i yet though they still have to play christiana nowadays,
1:24 pm
portugal in tuesday's playoff final and march meadows joins me now from dw sports to tell us more about this extraordinary result, north macedonia, beach italy. did anyone see this coming? mark? no, not really. i mean this was a game, just a one off game in italy, so north macedonia wouldn't really give him much of a chance. i mean, italy, we're imperious at the euro's last year in june and july. they were by far the best team, and it's all suddenly gone very badly wrong. i think the problem for italy was actually that euros because the years was put back by a year because of the corona virus pandemic. and that meant the will qualifying was sort of in 2 parts, either side of it. and i think that upset that rhythm a little bit, they didn't actually lose any games in local qualifying. they drew too many and they ended up finishing a 2nd to switzerland. but still everyone expected them to win this game. quite incredible. the coach rebuttal, mancini said last summer, i had my greatest joy and now the biggest disappointment,
1:25 pm
so disaster fell asleep. it was a night from north macedonia. yeah, i mean, we can see some shots that see of the capitals copier and lots of celebrations. they're actually north macedonia have got form for this. they beat germany in wilco qualifying in germany with another let go now they've beaten italy in italy and of course not macedonia were at the euro's last year. it was their 1st major tournament and they really held their own. so yeah, an incredible forms. we have to make it clear that they are not yet qualified for the will cut. they've got to play against portugal in the play a final on tuesday, but they've got a chance, a few teams. you have definitely qualified this week. japan, saudi arabia, ecuador, uruguay. we've also got the african qualifying the player starting tonight and finishing on tuesday. and what about ukraine? because they didn't play, did they? can they still qualify? they can indeed, i mean, ukraine were meant to play scotland last night in the playoffs. and the final, understandably, it was decided that they couldn't play the game the moment. it's been postponed until june, possibly september. it has to happen before the woke up,
1:26 pm
obviously in november. and if they beat scotland, they would then have a player final against wales. now russia will also do to play poland last night, but poland refused to play them. russia has been suspended from, woke up qualifying russia, trying lots of legal means trying get back into the world cup. but poland play sweden in their play, a final now on tuesday, if that game goes ahead, then there's no real chance of russia getting in the days from the day we spoke. thanks so much you're watching d. w. and use his erect recap of alamein story. ukraine's navy says it has sunk a large russian landing ship off the occupied port city of betty. i'm west good western intelligence reports say ukrainian forces have also retaken ground near the capital. keith, as the war enters, it's the 2nd month. that's your news. round up, stay tuned for a closer look at what you gas deals with and that's with our business team. but for
