on the offer ukraine. a donor conference in warsaw raises over 9000000000 euros. ukraine displaced people, a quarter of the population had been forced to flee their homes due to the war. ah, i'm william gal crop. welcome to the program. british prime minister boris johnson . his travel to keys meeting with president vladimir zalinski. johnson is one of the few western leaders to visit ukraine since russia's invasion started in february. the trip was kept secret jobs and spokesperson says it's intended to her to show solidarity with the ukranian people. and his visit follows one by european commission president on friday. changes us get more now in keys with my colleague nick connelly, who's there for us, nick,
7:02 pm
good evening to you. let's start with all of these visits. european leader is top diplomats. they've been traveling to key if it's a sign of support. is there more than just symbolism to this though? well obviously this is 1st and foremost about the optics about showing that they basically trust ukraine to have the security here on the ground and to be able to provide conditions for people of this seniority to be in care of and to do so safely. uh, it's an arduous journey. they're coming in by train. not able to fly here right now . but sir, i think it's also a question of what they have in that bags. what kind of promises they have, the ukranian side, and also the u. k. has been providing a lot more weapons earlier and in larger are kind of scales than most other european countries. certainly maybe not quite as much as the u. s. sat certainly something that hasn't been missed here in ukraine, where there was a lot of anger and frustration with germany pre 24th february, the beginning. this war. not being willing to send alms here to ukraine, saying that they,
7:03 pm
the german government line was that they were convinced that sending weapons lethal weapons ukraine would just conflict and provoke russia. that's of the been changed . but the question is, now, can germany, other european e countries provide weapons in anything like the scale and the, and the speed that the grain is what the men need them? right, and let's get into that more because the russians appear to be refocusing towards the east and ukrainian official say that's where they're going to meet that fight. what more can you tell us about this presumed next stage of the war? we've already seen an uptick in fighting in the eastern. we're already seeing more russian supplies heading that way. moving away from belarus in the northern regions of ukraine, towards border regions between russia and those eastern parts of ukraine yesterday . that appalling missile attack on from a toss train station where dozens of civilians lost their lives waiting for the jason trans get out. we've heard from the ukranian side already. they are cooling on civilians to get out while they still can. it's quite difficult because lots of

the rail infrastructure has already been damaged so that the lines are not currently usable and opposite the rails. tim is the only way to really get significant numbers as soon as out in a hurry. as we've seen with meribelle, getting people out in private cars and buses is exceeding a difficult and often a slow. so that is now the push to get people out as quickly as possible. having said that, it is also, and the area of ukraine where you transmit trees of see the best prepared. these are parts of the country where fighting between ukraine's army in person separate is, has been going on since 2014. so they're trenches, defensive structures, all the kind of hardware on the ground. that was the place where you cranes was expecting an attack to come. so looks analisia warning that this could get really nasty, that this could be, it was on a scale not seen in europe. bases since world war 2 with at to very, very heavily armed a military's slugging it out. obviously also is likely to happen in cities with seeing if it populations and so far the experience been, the civilians for the most part don't leave until it's too late. they will not,
7:05 pm
in the most part, really accept that this risk is happening until they hear the 1st shots, and that's often then too late. so now the attempt is here to try and get people to go while they still can connelly for us there. and keep thanks very much for that latest people in the ukrainian port city of odessa fear they are rushes next target . the city has imposed a weekend curfew following that deadly missile attack and chromatic. now odessa is home to around 1000000 people. it's location on the black sea makes it strategically important to both sides. russia has launched 2 attacks near the city in recent days. even before these latest attacks, many ukrainians, mostly women and children, have been leaving odessa. and for some it's been a hot breaking decision. looked as though it, oh, it's hard, very hot. moved through, we sent my daughter in law with the kids,
7:06 pm
and we'll stay here. i don't know how it's going to be. i hope we'll meet again with the, with the, with the 3. the city looks calm. but on friday, russia launched to attacks on the region war of a woman esmerelda. our enemy conducted an attack with the shore missile complex bastion on the village of crest, nor silica. unfortunately, people were killed and wounded infrastructure was damaged her course. also, the enemy launched another missile attack near dasa. fortunately, no one was wounded. on a desk, a shore line, there were warnings of mines, but that doesn't stop people from being outside as much as is allowed a calf view between 9 pm and 6 a. m, if now in place because of fears of more attacks. for those still

here, life goes on. but no one knows what will become of this city. oh, to those who were left behind. get some other headlines now from the war and ukraine. the german government says 40 russian diplomats have left the country. berlin ordered their expulsion saying they were carrying out espionage and were a danger to public security. so lucky has donated its air defense system to ukraine. the soviet era, as 300 system, is already in use by ukrainian forces. so little extra training will be required. it's ukraine's only defense against ballistic missiles. now the u. s. as it's re equipping slovakia with a patriot missile system. the warn ukraine push world food prices up on nearly 30 percent last month. the united nations is warning. they may rise further and that puts millions more people around the world at risk of mount nutrition,

especially children to help the millions of people who have fled their homes because of the war in ukraine. neighboring poll, it has hosted a donor conference ukrainians was organized by the non governmental organizations, global citizen, the european commission, and the canadian government. the money will go largely to united nations and local refugee relief programs by let's get more on these a charity efforts with our correspondent jack barrack jack. 11000000 people have fled their homes, either internally displaced or have left the country entirely. what do these people need most? well, according to this donor conference, the 1st thing that they need is money. and that's why they've raised this 9100000000 euros to try and help specifically with the humanitarian and the civilian efforts. we know that 4 point, one of that money is coming in donations, that are sort of hard cash being given to those people. and that 5000000000 euros
7:09 pm
will be from european financial institutions. so predominantly loans, the idea is to get as much money to help the civilians that have fled. we know that somewhere in the region of $4000000.00 have entered the european union, and the rest are internally displaced in ukraine since the evasion started at the end of february. so money is obviously a huge, huge part of this, but there's also just the practical and logistical aspects what's being done to help. how's in settle all of these people? well, this is the big question because for, for a lot of the authorities, this is an extremely fluid situation. we understand that from our many of our colleagues who've been reporting on the board of that actually now what's happening is more people are returning from countries like poland in to western ukraine. so the question is, for those who stay that are staying in a being been moving around different you countries, the priority for them in the short immediate medium term. and this is according to the statement that come off the end of this. this donor conference has things like
7:10 pm
education, medical bills support trying to help children trying to help mothers, etc, and obviously housing and but for the people in ukraine for the money that will go there, that actually that money is a more sort of emergent, vital humanitarian cash that is to try and make sure people have things like running water and have have shelter from the, from the ongoing war. now we've seen due to the war in ukraine and the economic fall out from sanctions here in the european union, as well as, of course, before all of this, the pandemic and the economic consequences of that crisis. there's just been so much money that's been doled out or has been committed, are to try to help people and businesses are their concerns that there's going to be enough money for what's needed in this acute crisis. this is the big question, isn't it? where does all this money come from in these e u, financial institutions, money that i spoke earlier, this does mean that they must feel that they have the bandwidth to support them.
7:11 pm
and i think the feeling, especially in the european union. so she in here in brussels, is that the money needs to be there to support people. they're aware that if the humanitarians and the refugee side of things don't help them on fully supported and it can have a huge effect on european union citizens as well. you mentioned as well though this idea of what the priorities are. well, the question the ukrainian government is asking is the money is all well and good, but we saw demitrix labor for instance, the foreign minister attending a nato meeting here at brussels early this week. and he said, what they need are weapons at defense systems. i'm to tank systems to try and fight off the russian fonts. and he warned that if that didn't happen, then there would be a likelihood that the war in ukraine could spill over. i jam packed there for us in brussels. thanks very much. france, his presidential race is tightening just a day before the 1st round of voting. polls show far right challenger marine. the
