despite significant losses. in fact, facts russian president vladimir putin says his forces in you praying will prevail against what he describes a russian enemy. ah, i'm sure gale. welcome to the program. we begin with breaking news from the united states, where at least 5 people have been shot and injured at a train station in new york fire department personnel also reportedly discovered and designated explosive devices at the station. the incident occurred at the 36th street station in brooklyn. during the busy morning commute let's join bastion heartache in new york. welcome bastion. what more can you tell us? welfare. we just heard from an eye witness who was apparently on that very subway

car where this incident happened and she described her 16th of panic in that car. apparently the smoke grenade went off on one end of the subway car, all the people scrambling to the other end of the subway car. and then the shots went off. the people lying in their blood as the subway was pulling into the next station and making it possible for 4 people to get off. you mentioned, you mentioned a several people injured. they've been brought to nearby hospital. we have all kinds of law enforcement on the ground. we have new york police department, of course we have the f b i because as of now the suspect who had to have worn a some kind of construction vest as may be construction workers on the subway would . and also a gas mask apparently, is still at large police. of course, looking for that big right now. it seems to be a male. there. you can be sure that they're looking at all kinds of a t, c t,

v footage and license plate readers to find out which path that, that suspect took and to get away from that crime scene and the danger or the fear of course now is this alone shooter, or is this potentially part of some larger plot? was this potentially a terrorist attack? fail? i what is being said about these and detonated explosive devices that we here were found? yes, so 1st report that there were other devices we, i mentioned the smoke grenade that went off and there were reports that there were other devices, but the new york fire department now saying that they found more that more devices, but they were not active. no active explosive devices at the scene right now. as far as with hearing from the authorities, we don't know if it might have either explosive devices with him. if he's planning to go to another location. what we do know that this subway station in the south of brooklyn, very much

a working class residential area. people on their way to work this morning. not the kind of place that you would expect if you wanted to cause mass casual casualties. not the kind of place where you would, where you would be likely to go. it's not times where it's not one of the big trained face in penn station, or grand central here in, in manhattan. so there were people on the train, of course, but it wasn't a super busy day, a situation on that train car apparently, but also has to be said there, of course, at these, these neurologic point in the city. as i mentioned times where, for example, security has been stepped up considerably over the past weeks and months because there have been incidents at these places recurring incident. so this definitely a place where you would think that security wouldn't be as high. so thank you so

much for that. past invest in hartwick in new york sundays the war in ukraine. russia's assaults on the besieged to port city of mary or pole, appears to be entering a decisive phase. u. s. military analysts say russian forces are nearly in full control of the city closing in on trapped ukrainian forces. russia says it has killed or captured almost a 100 ukrainian troops attempting to escape overnight. russian strikes have been pounding matter of ball 4 weeks, killing as many as 20000 residents. according to the mer civilians are expected to attempt to leave by car to day along one of several and negotiated humanitarian corridors. capturing the port would give russia complete control of the sea, of as of coastline and connected forces in ukraine's south and east mean, while ukraine in western countries are investigating allegations that russian forces used chemical weapons and money of all the claims which russia denies come from ukraine's as of battalion and military unit,
5:06 pm
the far right allegiances president vladimir zalinski has warned about their use or these robot. if one of the russian occupier spokesmen. he said that they might use chemical weapons against the defenders of north pole. or if they treat this with the utmost seriousness, which i would like to remind world leaders that the possible use of chemical weapons by the russian military has already been discussed. and already at that time, it meant that it was necessary to react to the russian aggression much harsher and faster source decent issue, which will they w correspondent, and commonly is in ukraine's 2nd largest city. a cock, if i picked up a some of those items a with him and started with the situation in the city was he can see her give his, basically a shadow of it's for myself, it's 5 pm here and it's totally empty. just a few passes by occasionally visible on the streets behind me, the regional government headquarters that was destroyed in

a russian missile attack right at the beginning of this war. and the russian soldiers are still very close within a few dozen kilometers where i'm standing now. so unlucky of where it feels like some kind of cheese returning and where those russian troops have withdrawn quite significantly in recent weeks. keep very much still on the front lines. basically every couple of minutes you can hear some artillery in the, in the background. it's often difficult to really work out where that is, but it just as you know, really bring home quite how close war is here and now still people staying here and not everyone has got out. but there is lots of speculation about where the russia will now trunk up its attempts to take cut, as well as the kind of symbolic target and expectation of more people trying to get out in a hurry in the days to come here. ok. and then down in the south in mario paul, russia seems to be intensifying its attack cent indeed. and it seems, if the reports were getting are true that the remaining ukraine forces have been split into. and now one of the main places they still are is still works with lots of underground tunnels,
5:08 pm
lots of places to hide and to hide from shilling and bomb attacks. so with that was one of the reasons why we'd heard speakers for the progression separatists in done yet, suggesting that chemical weapons be used as a way of trying to get at those ukranian soldiers. as you printing troops still able to hide from the worth. the artillery, so that was really a sense now that they are trying to push home that advantage and to take medical instant charges as soon as possible to free up troops to then be able to attack for the north along the wide front and on bass in places where the cranium has been holding up pretty well in recent weeks and how credible others allegation said that russian forces used chemical weapons. so far, we just getting those reports from those ukranian battalions. the are effective based a, a number of people were given medical treatment with singing and their eyes, their throats. they were having problems breathing. it seems like no one has lost their lives in this alleged attack. but it doesn't surprise anyone. this is
5:09 pm
something that even the western doesn't seem to be preparing for sending ukraine large amounts of equipment to deal with chemical attacks. and after all, now have to remember that the russian general in charge of this war has previously been in charge of us and forces in syria, a conflict where chemical weapons where you get civilians that definitely expectation here that is not off the table. and that's something that could be used by the rest inside if they feel like they're not making progress soft enough. okay, thank you for that nick, commonly in khaki. dr. alexander keller, s. from the institute for painted research and security policy at the university of hamburg. i asked him about those claims that russian forces and use a poisonous substance in mario, paul. good afternoon. well, it is certainly in the reality of the possible, but as we've just heard from your colleague on the ground, the evidence is very sketchy so far. right. investigators from the, from the u. s. a new k,
5:10 pm
a said to be looking into this. how would they establish whether this was a chemical attack or generally speaking does is extremely difficult from a far one would have to get conclusive proof of by yeah. conducting an onsite investigation during which samples would be taken. this would be environmental samples, biomedical samples from those people affected by the attack. and those samples would then have to be analyzed and compared to a known chemical warfare. agents to be really certain that this is what has happened. so you would expect that to be viable samples still around well, perhaps not of the warfare agent itself. but over the years and decades, those states processing, chemical warfare agents, chemical weapons, which have by now practically all been been destroyed on the international
5:11 pm
verification. those states certainly also know how these chemical warfare agents degrade and what then to look for after a week or a month after such an attack. war is inherently a terrible business. people get maimed or killed, lies, get destroyed. what is it about chemical weapons that makes them apparently so much worse than conventional weapons? well, to start with chemical weapons are prohibited by the chemical weapons convention. they kill indiscriminately and on that basis alone violate the principles of international humanitarian law. the laws of war, right. so what is the likely international response if this is found out if this is determined to have been a chemical weapons attack? well, i would expect, and we are already seeing a, just at the mere possibility that we would hear lots of condemnations and rightly
5:12 pm
so if this were a proven to be a chemical weapon attack, i would expect more sanctions to be not only discussed but also to be enacted, and i would hope that states the international community would make use of the legal instruments that are available to hold those ah, responsible for those to account. because it this idea of holding people to account for the sort of attacks as fallen somewhat into disrepute. chemical weapons have been used in syria. and no one has been held to an account that has been used in attacks against the enemies of russia. and in the united kingdom, again, no one held to account. so beyond the condemnation, sanctions are already in place. and more sanctions are on the way. it's hard to see where russia gets punished if this is found to be them using these prohibited weapons or holding perpetrators for such horrible crimes.
5:13 pm
and violations of the laws of war to account is a long process. and probably not so much in the eye of the public. this process actually works quite well until russia gets a chance to block it. russia has blocked the work of the o. p. c. w. in the hake, holding perpetrators in syria to account. russia has blocked those or similar efforts in the un security council with its veto. so i think it would be a mistake to criticize these processes when it is only one culprit who blocks the process from being conducted until the end. ok, thank you so much for joining your thanks, planning that dr. alexander keller from the institute for peace research and security policy. hillary welcome. no correspondent rebecca ritter's has been to the regions of separation. antony pro in east and ukraine,

western sanctions and said that rising prices would put pressure on western leaders . what the shipper was lamps to. she would know. we know that today our offices are taking part in a special military operation in dom boss in ukraine, which meddled nobody's helping the dumbass people's republic. so just to know, they are acting bravely you professionally, that you under effectively using the most modern weapons that have unique characteristics. you hear me analogous characteristic. let's take a closer look at that speech with vladimir as he passed from d w that russia service in berlin. welcome. vladimir. so what we heard from mr. booted there. sounds like a president trying to put a positive spin on the wall that was supposed to be over quickly. what did you make of what he had to say? well, 1st of all, there's no such thing in the russian public opinion as a war itself. so there worked wars prohibited in russia, they're talking about special, made their operation in the ukraine. and it was a highly symbolic step for prison. put him to invite lucas and come to the space

launcher station russian far is. because today's and university of your, in regarding short fighter space, it's a very important day for us is to in terms of russians of power from the world. so there were very strong signals for the russian domestic public and for the, for an audience as well. so from okay, and let's hear the click from the speech a is vladimir putin sounds quite defiant about international sanctions. i mean, we're not going to be isolated. no one can be isolated in the modern world. moreover, it's impossible to do with any country as huge as russia. so we will work with partners who want to cooperate with vladimir se, paul, who is likely to want to cooperate with russia. i would say who is likely to need to cooperate with russia because europe still bank russian guys and oil. there's a bunch of countries around the want to, we're happy to buy more fresh energy despite of the high prices in the us,
5:19 pm
it delivers more to the international markets like still like meet, like agricultural progress. but 1st of all, it's just an oil, and there's a huge, huge customer base is from this kind of commodities. but i'm ok. so this public speech there sat if, if this was the way this would be a president who's trying to get public opinion on his side was he tried to do with his speech. he has already the whole public opinion on his side. sincere. so the russian government wedding or put him, has a very tight grip on the russian that on the public opinion. so it does not make any campaigning force. it sells. the support is quite strong. and the parts of russian public was not supporting this military operation. just silent because there's their salad and everything. everyone and everything was against the war. and the big part of the russian public supporting came openly and they are pushing to support him as well. because i'm hearing voices from russia, of the, of the governmental employers. just push it to shore supports for,
5:20 pm
for this war in the ukraine publicly. and so when, when we see here these, these public protests and people, thanks to the warm we see and getting cut to the way and, and arrested. how are they viewed by the public in russia the basis to look at them? is that what war or they do? they just see them as troublemakers there more than travel americans, their traitors in terms of frustrating the russian in the russian speech in the russian universe. and the russian informational bubble, there are people who are working with animals during the war, and they are labeled as a traitors. and there is no mercy for traitors. right? the campaign in the east, if you craney said to be intensifying, we're hearing a terrible reports of shedding and places just just suffering a destruction. how far that it looked like a president, putin is likely to take this as far as he needs to go as high as he wants to go. and i'm afraid you will be reducing more horror stories and more horror pictures
