ah, ah ah, this is tito, you news live from berlin, fight to the end. that's the message from ukraine's prime minister, as a russian forces closing on the besieged port of my do you pull also on the program families of those killed in atrocities and so the capital keith more in the dead and begin the slow process of rebuilding their lives. and hope francis says the world is seeing an easter of war. the pontiff tells the faithful ukraine has been dragged into a cruel and senseless conflict. ah,
8:01 pm
i am pablo foliage. welcome to the program. the last ukrainian troops remaining in the besieged port of mario pole have defied a russian deadline to surrender. more than 10000 civilians have been killed in the weeks long bombardment. moscow estimates around 2 and a half 1000 ukrainian soldiers are holding out a huge steel plant, rushes defense ministry says it will destroy those who continue to resist. ukraine's prime minister says the city has not fallen and its forces. we'll fight to the end. dw correspondent rebecca ritters is in the ukrainian capital, keith, and i asked her what she can tell us about the situation in marty you pull a russians, gave the ukrainian soldiers until 1300 to day local time to come out with their hands up or, or risk being shot, being killed, they haven't seems it would appear have ignored that order. as just as you're
8:02 pm
reporting the prime minister saying that fighting continues. isn't all that surprising the as of battalion, those ukrainian soldiers defending the city have said that they are gonna fight till the end. they've said that all the way along since the beginning of this war, and they're famous here in ukraine for, for managing to defend that city. back in 2014, when russia invaded the 1st time. so it's very and surprising that they haven't hated that warning. now mary, you paul has been on the seed for weeks as we've been reporting and true atrocities and devastation coming out of that city. the stories are truly shocking and but it is a key target for russia both tactically and territorially, if they are successful in taking mary paul, it will link up areas that the under their control in crimea and the don bass. and also really give a big not to the ukrainian economy, not able to use that port to export it,

steal and weight and other products. so definitely a key city, both sides of fighting till the end. ukraine is definitely outnumbered, but it isn't over yet. now president zalinski warned russia peace talks will end of its forces killed the ukrainian troops, defending murder you pull. has there been any reaction to that? oh, that's right. i mean, after that directive or the that sir ultimatum was given by rushes and he came out and said that, you know, if the, if the ukrainian soldiers are kill than any pace negotiations will pay, steal a would die with them. but in reality, those pace talks have actually been on hold for some weeks now. ever since russian soldiers retreated from areas around, keep around here where i am, atrocities that were found in the wake of their retreat at retrieval. really put the talks on, on a, on a back burner anyway, ukrainians and russians not speaking to each other for several weeks. for
8:04 pm
a couple of weeks now. sorry. we were hearing room is that russian oligarchy, roman abramoff, which was in town. he's of course famous for being the former owner of chelsea, a football club. he was apparently here trying to sort of revive those talks. but today the foreign minister has said that russia and ukraine and not talking so definitely are still on ice. whatever happens in maryville will be decisive, and whether or not those talks can continue. that was rebecca ritter's speaking to us earlier from cave or russia is stepping off artillery and missile strikes on ukraine. second city hockey and the capital cave. images of dead civilians and the town of boucher outside cave shocked the world. earlier this month their residence there are trying to rebuild their lives. while the fighting may have ended in boucher mourning is far from over. locals here struggling to deal with what they went through. yeah, sure. what do you think i just prayed to day to stop crying?
8:05 pm
i didn't stop crying for a whole day. it is law. very difficult. difficult to talk about the war. now we need to come to our senses and then talk because we've survived these horrors and are constantly crying, christine, of lights and the bodies, the horrified the world. a fortnight ago, a gone from the streets, but the russian troops, actions afresh, and residents mines. what's here again, they chased people like they were on a safari. less they tried to take the highest positions on the top floor of houses that they could see everything. no legacy that rock for vegas. in nearby bird younger, much of the town has been left in ruins, rescue as a still searching good bodies beneath the rebel. dozens of residents remain missing and feared dead. one, embroidery, anchor, and butcher, the worst may be over the now fall to the east. in hawk eve residence still living under relentless bombardment in just the last few days,
8:06 pm
more than a dozen civilians have been killed by russians shelling at least 5 more died in strikes on sunday. survivors are traumatized. i do it, you know, when a dog hears a bang and it starts to tremble all over, even if the noise is far away, i'm like that now. everything, every part of me is trembling here. unfortunately for hockey's inhabitants, the worst may still lie ahead. ukrainian officials warned that russia is preparing for a fresh assault on the battered city or for more on the military situation in ukraine . i spoke earlier to former military officer, frank led, which and i asked him 1st whether the defenders can hold back to russian advance in mighty, you pull, well, they can hold back, they can hold them back as long now as a survivor they've been given. it seems to me is no quarter by
8:07 pm
enemy, which is to say that there is little point in you surrender because we're going to kill you anyway. which is entirely country to the laws of all the laws and customs . want to close to geneva conventions. one of the problems of getting a court order is that you encourage your enemy to fight the death seems to me that that's the direction this guy. yeah, well, how strategically important that is my, you pull for the russians. ok. it's important for 2 major reasons. the 1st that it would open the way for a land corridor between occupied don bass area and equally occupied crimea. now currently the only conflict between russia and crime is effectively a long bridge. they finish, i think about 3 or 4 years ago. right now they'll have a long corridor into the crimea. so that's the 1st thing. second thing from the perspective of the direct military situation. there are between $6.00 and $8.00

russian, italian combat groups, which are about in theory, a 1000 many. but of course, public significantly less of a very ravaged, but those will be released on the unit, supporting them, probably to strike north into ukraine, which will will be a problem for you credit forces. and that's one of the reasons these guys have been given the order to fight on. i suspect, let's talk actually a little bit more about russia strategy now. they've confirmed the death of general vladimir fall of another high ranking general who is killed in ukraine. and what does this tell us though about russia's military strategy? well, the 1st thing it tells us is that they're not very good at command and control. one of the advantages that western forces is demonstrated last 30 years, is that a great deal initiative to the for commanders. these generals being killed, which by the way, constitutes about 30 percent of their general general offices. so that's an amazing number. if we just take into account in 15 years or so, vietnam america's last 6 generals in 51 days,
8:09 pm
the russians have lost 8 full generals. but what's happening here? 2 things. first, the generals are going forward to sort out mess created by the fact that there's very little initiative to be had in a lower lower officer orders as well. the 2nd thing is, is outstanding targeting by ukrainian forces, which i suspect is being assisted by, by western and nato nato intelligence. one thing nato's been very, very good at not going to stand other places. high value targeting and the channels are high value targets. frank, russia is also lost, it's black c flagship mosque of it this week, but it also leads me on to wonder how long can they continue to suffer a loss of like the ones that we see so far heritable estimates of the losses. the russians have taken her up between 25 and 30 percent of their initial force problems. the russians have is that they don't have the kind of reverse reserve system. it said the americans have all the most western

countries have noted to have the depths of manpower, the people's republic of china. so what they're trying to do now is essentially scraping the bottom of the barrel for the soldiers. they have called up that very few reserves, those who've been serving or stop serving since 2012. and they'll take a long time to get them into the front line. they're also suffering endemic problems of corruption within their ranks, which, which also things things out in terms of manpower and efficiency. there are very serious trouble. my estimation on that isn't necessarily entirely good news because it raises the possibility of escalation using weapons other than standard conventional italian combat groups. here's a round up of some other news making headlines around the world. the death toll in the philippines from tropical storm maggie has risen above 170 search and rescue operations are continuing after the 1st tropical storm of the year hit the nation a week ago. heavy rain set of lance lights and flooding a 3rd. dave
