4:02 pm
a wounded woman next to her. another person is clinging to life, then sirens, and more explosions. the emergency workers rush for cover with they have no choice but to leave the victims exposed and bleeding out on the street . why come on sunday shelling of har? keefe ukraine, 2nd largest city, killed at least 5 people, and wounded another. 13 graphic scenes like this one have become commonplace around the country. as russian forces bear down on eastern ukraine, they're keeping up with attacks elsewhere in an apparent effort to weaken ukraine's ability to defend itself. but it's the wo. i call on all those who live under on ending bombardment to leave. our volunteers will help
4:03 pm
you do them both with wow. the russian defense ministry said it struck more than $300.00 targets overnight across the country, and downed ukrainian fighter jets. on monday, the governor of the leave region said strikes. they are killed and wounded several people including civilians at non military sites. since you folks know, this is an absolutely barbaric attack on an absolutely civilian target you. people came to work in the morning when you briefly my rebuttal. the western part of ukraine has largely avoided russia's wrath, but it's not been totally immune. russian military planners have said no where in ukraine is safe. something the country's civilian population knows painfully well. and turning me now from the 5th is did of your correspondence. emerald shows, emma, i understand that you were at the sight of one of the black. what can you tell us
4:04 pm
about the explosions that have occurred there? yes, layla was after sight of one of the block that occurred this morning. a missile air strikes or hits a car service station, killing for civilians. there the full men o die dare to 4 people. sorry. who died there were all employees of that car service station. they were coming out to start their shift or are there station just like every day and this morning? well, we were all here in the leave. a wall can buy air sirens. everybody took shelter in the nearest a bunker. this is something that people are sadly very used to even as we've heard in the report. the western part of ukraine had mostly been spared their bombings with. so happening in the east and today are, you know, we've seen at shattered glass on site as crepes of metal on the ground. they've
4:05 pm
really, you know, they've really showed the violence of the blast that occurred and a here in the v of 7 people died. 11 people were injured including a 3 seriously injured and including a child which has been a lively injured in those blasts. and now emma live has been considered to be a relatively safe, especially compared to multiple, for instance, is the security situation changing where you are? well, it is, it does tags from this morning, definitely remind oliver he and of eve, dots, or the country or in its entirety is, are, you know, or under threats or that we are in the country at war, no matter where in ukraine or we are of course the western part of ukraine has been, or mainly spared the devastation that was seen in the eastern regions, but nowhere really feels safe any more he in ukraine. so what is this doing to the
4:06 pm
people in livermore, and those who are internally displaced and who arrived in the city seeking safety? exactly, well, there's a lot there. thousands of people who came from the eastern part of ukraine, he leave to seek shelter from the dreadful situation that we've seen those past few weeks. that a lot of people from kia for are here. everybody was as seeking shelter here in the west. as there are more done or 5000000 internationally, a disk or internally, sorry, displaced persons here with in ukraine. they're mostly moved to the western part of their country. so you can imagine they've already left their houses behind all their belongings behind. and they came here to look for shelter and even here they can are filled up no way safe. and just next to the car service station i was mentioning earlier that the place i was earlier, i was that earlier, there was a hotel that was
4:07 pm
a ha hosting. those people does intern an internally displaced people. there was a hostile which windows were completely shattered by the blast. you can only imagine how the people who were dare to seek shelter felt when that happened this morning. he w correspondent, emerald, charged reporting from liver western ukraine. thank you for your report. thank you . on me, while a few 1000 fighters and some civilians are holding out in a vast steel plant in the eastern part of mario, paul, it's the last pocket of ukrainian resistance in the city. authorities say the defenders will fight to the end. russia claims to control all of mario polls. urban areas, and most are in rooms. mariel poll has not fallen yet. the port city has suffered the brunt of russian attacks in ukraine. it has been under siege for several weeks now. ukraine says at least 21000 people have been
4:08 pm
killed and those who remain in the city are trapped without the barest of necessities. what is happening here and mario pole is expected to soon spread to other areas too risky. sca russian troops are preparing for an offensive operation in eastern ukraine in the near future. would they want to literally finish off and destroy the don bass? this you destroy everything that brought theme to this industrial region. normal russian forces are destroying mario poll. you want to wipe it off the face of the earth and other cities in the done yet. and lou hands, corinthians ramadi, bennett, he will escal mostly on sunday, ukraine's remaining troops and mario pole defined rushes surrender or die ultimatum . some 2 and a half 1000 ukrainian troops are dug in here at the sprawling as of stall steel plant. it is now the only known remaining pocket of resistance. many civilians and
4:09 pm
children also sheltering here. with the passing of the surrender deadline, pro russian separatist forces say they are now preparing for attack. do but it's, there are only 2 blocks and buildings left before the mill. yeah. there's a small area around the factory and enemies. they're hiding the basements. they just want to get over. we're preparing the ground assault. the artillery will show them 1st before we send in close quarters, assault troops, which all over the bottom, you know. meanwhile, mario pulse defenders are set to fight till the end were join are by a franca led, which he's a former british military officer who served in the balkans, iraq and afghanistan. he's now a senior lecture in law and strategy at the university of portsmouth. very one. welcome to the w, sir. the battle for my you, paul,
4:10 pm
we understand is raging as we speak. a moment ago, a ukraine's defense mystery spokesperson characterized the situation right now in my tuple as extremely difficult, but added, it has not been taken in full by russian forces. do we know about the ukrainian forces still holding out there? yes, we know a little bit the made core of the defenders is composed by the us of battalion, which is highly experienced. a bunch of fighters have been fighting off the last 8 years in that region. from the russian perspective are often seen as highly nationalistic, very far right wing, and aid himself of the us about symbolic target. the other unit that made it unit is the a unit of thought ukrainian marines, many from, i think, were captured earlier this week. is my, your, mary up, or would you say a defining battle in the course of this war? and if so, why is it so important?
4:11 pm
yes, i think so later from 22 perspective, from the russian perspective, it's the 1st major city they will have taken. if they take it when they take it, the 2nd reason, of course, is that it is the final leak in the land bridge between metropolitan russia in call it, that the main body of russia. and there is a bus and the crimea. so that's very important. it is a major industrial center as well. of course. the 2nd perspective course is the ukrainians, and i would suggest that over the next few days, what we're going to see is a battle very much like that which rack standing right with the red october steel factory day. and it took 3 months for the germans even to, to get to the point where they thought they were taking it held on for 3 months. i don't think the defenders in my up all of the of style are going to last that long, but it's going to be a very tough fight for both sides. very awesome bolick one of course the ukrainians
4:12 pm
and a symbolic one and did it. it's been 3 weeks or says russia announced that it's turning, it's attention to ukraine's east, but then offensive has been slow to get going. what's been holding them back? yes, they've taken almost no ground in the don bus area actually throughout the whole whole campaign. what's happening now of course, is that resetting their forces from the defeated key f that will take some time. i don't think we're going to be seeing a major offense if there for a certain next week or maybe in the next 2 weeks. we are seeing attacks also seeing ukrainian counter attacks. but the endemic problems with the russian forces remain, which is why it's taking them. which will certainly contribute to this battle going on and done it problems. big corruption, poor logistics, poor planning, poor command structures and antiquated doctrine. eventually they will get themselves together. we can see now force is forming north of,
4:13 pm
of is you making no probing attacks. and so while we have you with us, i want to get your take on what happened in the city, relatively untouched by fighting compared to places like valuable a safe haven for those fleeing violence and other parts of the country. at least 7 people killed in russian strikes is the nature of the war changing. let's see. so next the war has been fairly consistent with russian attacks and civilian populations, trying to deliver that message later. this is, this is not a safe area, but there are no safe areas that we can catch caption can you almost anywhere. there's no way you can feel safe. we saw the attack last week on climate toast. for example, just out the ukrainian said, look, it's time for people to leave the area, the direct response being attack on them on one of the main evacuation areas. now this is strategic strike both so called strategic strike. it's the intention is to terrorize and undermine the morale of the population because it's doing the reverse
4:14 pm
of the 6 generally do frankly, richer senior electrolyte strategy at the university of portsmouth. sir, thank you very much for taking the time to take our questions greatly appreciate it . thank you. or as the ukrainian army suffers losses in battle, more men are being called up to serve for now only for service have to answer the call, but all men deemed eligible are banned from leaving the country and could be drafted to the front lines for some it's a battle they relish for others. it's one they dread abuse. i mean a see has been to meet some of them. i'm a peaceful man. i haven't or grab a gun. so i not feel myself comfortable because of those thoughts. but i think if i will have to grab a gun, if i will have to fight for ukraine. so i think i will stay and i will do what i
4:15 pm
need to do when will yes, keep it as a router. if i'm cold up and i think i'm ready, even though i've never held a weapon in my life and the everything can be learned, step by step, i'm following him, sir. as that said, no harm to any living creature. i didn't have some personal hate or desire to use a wireless like writing against people, but to well, if, if there was, if there was no option. well, i'm interested in defending this land from intruders. and there's lots of other interesting ways of doing this currently working, working as, as her dresser. it's my profession and i miss for journalists and i'm just derived from virginia lympics like on the 23rd of february.
4:16 pm
and like next the next morning, the divorce started as a yard tv presenter on our public broadcast. mushrooms has been a movie nickel we evacuated for keith and were continuing to work on the information from martini from that of. it's a very important moment now to move your victim of the one love it up with one male is why we men aren't on the front lines. but i would say we're also on a front line right now. but a very, some of that of i don't know what will happen, like in 2 days in 3 days here, but i suppose like every ukrainian have to who have to do their jump. what to do? it's a man question. my white and and my daughter are in another country now and then in poland, i can probably only see them off the wool when they can return to ukraine river in
4:17 pm
it. cuz i never thought okay you my mom and my girlfriend's parents sold, they left on either on the road and i got the hod didn't i didn't call my daughter for the 1st 3 weeks from like, cuz it was very emotional and i couldn't hold back my tears so i didn't call that 3 weeks since i started to calm down because we've been in touch with miss shelf misses one of my chance. now i just stay here waiting for something i didn't know actually waiting for victory of ukrainian army and that the compilation was produced by my colleague, i mean, i see from who's here with me on the set. i mean so many impressions there share with some of some of your experiences talking to these men. well, it was actually difficult to get people to go on camera and tell me what they thought. a lot of men thought that i wanted them to go on and say they were scared
4:18 pm
to fight that they were cowards because i specifically focused on and who weren't fighting already. but what i found was that most people, while they wanted to help, they didn't know exactly the best way to do that. so you had some people, even one of the men in the report, he had tried on the very 1st day of the war to go sign up. and he was turned away because they had so many volunteers who already had combat experience. that he didn't get a chance, you know somebody, he was outraged by what had happened to his country and he wanted to sacrificed his life for it. then on the other hand, you had men who said, i've never shot a gun. i wouldn't be a good fighter. i don't want to go to the front lines because of that, but i could serve my country in a better way. and in the end, i saw that what bothered people, the most is that they won't be able to see their families who have for the country until the war is over. and no one really knows when that's going to be. it's a terrible predicament or all around. can you outline for us the rules of engagement in terms of who has to serve and who, who doesn't have to serve in the army? well, as the lensky said, on the 1st day of the war,
4:19 pm
that no man between the age of 18 and 60 who is fit to serve could leave the country. now, there are exemptions for that. if you have a health problem, then you're not fit to serve, then you can leave the country. or if you have more than 3 children, or if one of your children is disabled, then you can also leave the country to take care of them in another country. they are, there are 4 steps of the conscription process where at stage 3 right now, which means that people who have had some kind of military training, even if that was just a course at the university that had to do with military, then they have to serve but so far, stage 4 hasn't been engaged. that would be all civilians, all civilian men have to present themselves to be drafted to the military. we're not that far. but some people think if that continues, if we see continue losses like this, ukraine might have to go that way. and in conclusion, i mean, has there been it,
4:20 pm
are people abiding by these rules? are they accepting of this martial? i understand that for the most part. yeah. for the most part, yes. i didn't talk to a single man who didn't say that they wanted to stay in the country and help, but there are reports of a lot of men fleeing over 1000 about 1090. 1 men were reported to have crossed the border illegally until dover. there's a smuggling rings where smugglers charging up to $15000.00 to get men over the borders. people, falsifying paper, saying that they have disabled children. this is a very small percentage, but their experience is pretty unique. poland said that they wouldn't turn anybody back because they said it's the human right to flee from a war, and that's ukraine's business if they want to keep men there. but according to you, in law, refugees are allowed to the country if they feel threatened by the war. i mean, i see for thank you so much spring for this very interesting perspective. thank you . of armor putin's war on ukraine is being waged with the blessing of the russian orthodox church. but not
4:21 pm
all its followers are behind the invasion. when russian monastery here in germany is taking a different stand. monks at saint garrick's abbey, north of berlin, have opened their doors to ukrainian refugees, and every news wanted to visit them soon. oh, missouri, about to kneel, earbuds greets his guests. normally his 9 monks would be eating in the small kitchen. but this russian orthodox monastery has taken in about 20 refugees from ukraine. sir. now every one takes their meals in shifts. they communicate in russian. the refugees have been integrated into the monasteries. daily routine era has been assigned to the garden. she found sanctuary here together with her parents and daughter. she shows as photos of her life in key if visiting the christmas market with her daughter outings with her mother. she never dreamed that war would
