find solace in the clean up living with the fear that the russians might return. raising awareness and money with football, ukraine's shocked out on that land the war and are now touring the world seeking support for their home country. ah, hello m terry martin, thanks for joining us. 7 weeks into its war with ukraine. moscow has announced the beginning of a new stage in the conflict. after spending days regrouping russian troops now appear to have launched a full scale offensive along a 500 kilometer front in ukraine's don boss region. after suffering setbacks round kia, the kremlin declared its main goal to be the capture of the eastern territory where moscow back separatists have been fighting for power for years. shots

fired on the front line. ukraine says these are some of the opening salvoes in russia's offensive in the east. in footage, released by the ukrainian defense ministry troops to say they are ready to defend the don bus them high school, let them come. this soldier says they will stay here forever. there is enough land to bury them all ukraine's president confirmed the stock of the new phase in the war. in that us zamora, we can now state that russian troops had begun the battle for the dawn about sla, for which they hadn't been preparing for a long time. soon as she or a significant part of the entire russian army is now concentrated on this offensive . no matter how many russian troops are driven there, we will fight. we will defend ourselves and we will do it every day. we won't give up anything ukrainian green school navy, the more ah,
2:03 pm
thousands of residents are now tracked in towns under constant shelling. this woman lives in the remains of a village near the front line. she describes living in anew no man's land. mozilla is seldom when you find, we don't even know where the shelling comes from. here we wait for it from there. so thinking that the ukrainian army will protect has it, and it comes from there. you know that there shelling from all directions is not one humanitarian groups race to evacuate sick and elderly residents from the contested donnette screeching adding to the estimated 10000000 ukrainians. who now fled their homes by any means possible through most of the main difficulty is that people who have problems moving you had to be evacuated or change very old people who are living there final days or weeks or months. and that's why it was so difficult you watch, and olga with russian forces in control of much of the south and east one
2:04 pm
pocket of resistance remains the as of style steel plant in mary paul, several 1000 ukrainian forces are entrenched here under heavy attack. on tuesday, russia issued yet another deadline for them to give up their arms. but here as elsewhere, ukrainians are refusing to see any of their territory without a fight. reporter manuel shaws is in the western ukrainian city of la vive. she told us she while ago how people there have been reacting to the news of russia's dawn bus offensive. while terry, i'm here in the city center of leave is the western part of their country, which have been related to the sped by the fights we. so happening in the eastern part of ukraine, but you can see around me, life is, is seemingly going on, you know, people here are in those trees there,
2:05 pm
tending today business days. but you can feel that they, they were, they were preparing themselves for that. the fence, if that's rash and offensive is some part of the country in the boss. you can, you can when you talk to them. i did tell you they were prepared. they were expecting it to happen. they were expecting this new phase of fighting happening that just bracing themselves themselves for the west. and you know, yesterday the be itself had been hit by several miss r s. so it does feel here that even if this region has been fed, it does feel that the fighting is intensifying all over the country. there are a lot of attention is now being focused on the port city of mario pole that besieged port city, where it said that a number of ukrainian troops are still hold out. the russia is called on those troops to lay down their arms again. what's, what,
2:06 pm
what's known about the situation in mario poll. emma well, it is fair to feel hundreds of thousands of civilians which are trapped in the city before the war. there was 400000 civilians in mar, you, paul, and maybe as much as a call tell them off to in the city especially were ring the situation in the logical side of the stall where the ukraine and army is holding its position. the russians have called on a sol days, if not on the government to surrender their forces. they called on sold it to individually surrender, but also civilians. hundreds of civilians who, who sold shatter in dot side on that side. so they are fees no to me. facilities,
2:07 pm
but also for civilians was chopped mario poll, which has become a highly symbolic place for educating them forces. this is where they are still standing and they said they will fight until the end. i'm a thank you very much, correspondent michelle. they're in la beef. russia's foreign minister is now confirmed the beginning of this new stage and what the kremlin calls its special military operation. in ukraine, sergey lauper off made the announcement in an interview on indian television. she really had to say duration in the east of ukraine is aimed as was announced from the very beginning to fully the rate. the den, yes, can look on screen publix and this duration will, will continue just beginning. i mean, another stage of this or duration is beginning and then show this will be a very important moment of this entire special iteration. from our joined by d, w,
2:08 pm
russia analyst, konstantin eigen konstantin. russia's foreign minister there has confirmed that the next stage of bosco's intervention in ukraine has begun. what should we expect in the coming days and weeks? well, terry, frankly, i lost count all the stages of steps and whatever in the last 50 full days. but it's clear that are out walks began as a marshal makia, which was supposed to take probably a few days now turned into full blown war. and i think that by now the, the real goal is actually securing as much as possible all the doing. yeah. can new house law and securing a land bridge show you a little bit between the russian federation proper is recognized in international board international borders and then next crimea, and in this respect, i think are you believe the most important flash point. now, for all the russians,
2:09 pm
because this is in the end where this land bridge can be created and at least this is where you can and out did it that, that they did great. now reports suggest that the russian offensive in ukraine has been plagued by problems with logistics and morale, or russian forces really up for taking on ukraine's best equipped and most experienced soldiers in the east constantine. well, good question. some military analysts whom i spoke in last couple of days say that maybe there are songs that of some problems with the logistics are being fixed or at least to the russian forces or trying to fix this is kind of overstretched columns of supply shouldn't appear there. are at least that's what the military experts say, but as far as morale goes, well,
2:10 pm
it's not going to be as high as the ukrainian morale because the overall sort of goal of this operation is much more mark you are from 20 of the russians got by this stage all by the rule, there will be lots of people fighting just to endanger that conference. and this is a very powerful, powerful elements of motivation for a professional, semi professional soldier. so i think that there's going to be a talk fighting, but as you rightly said, ukrainians defending their homeland, they do feel that they are in their own rights. and this is an almost boost for anyone. and during the whole, do you have any reason to believe, constantine, that protein would stop if he manages to capture the don bus? how big is the risk that he will keep going with his territorial ambitions? well, i think that for now, you won't be able to go much further after the sinking of the moscow cruiser. and
2:11 pm
any attempt, for example, log book, an amphibious operation to capture odessa. now the main port in the west ukraine ah, will be doomed without basically the air color which must be provided. so i think the don't boss is still as such a as the area is a huge chunk to swallow. who will most grain. i'm not sure that they'll be able to do that. so i think that they will have to present something to the public by the 9th of may be day, which could have made the main as the st. rush of the red dates and the calendar off to that we'll see. but frankly, harry, even of them managed to capture don boss, which will de mom huge forces. i'm not certain they'll be able to hold as much contain. thank you so much. is always saw. are russia expert, konstantin, i got there with russia now focusing on the don bus region,
2:12 pm
some ukrainians and other parts of the country are returning to their homes or what's left of them. they w correspondent, rebecca ritter's travel to the city of european where resonance have started to rebuild, despite their fear that the call may not last one thing that strikes you when you enter a pain is the silence. these once bustling straight, now scorched and deserted, then sometimes the silence is broken. by the sound of people trying to put their lives back together. i have nothing to my wrath. 300 square meters of roof is missing. above full of the apartment c, there's nothing but the blue sky above the top of the thing and ever older is the caretaker of these 82 flats and she lives in one of the top. gemma with this to my apartment is in this part of the building that was damaged by missiles. she stayed right through the occupation to try to save them from russian soldiers taking them
2:13 pm
over, but was helpless to stop. the missiles murmured over, now it is in this state, the house is uninhabitable until we rebuild it. do you more next door to olga, another group with a similar story. they tell me this wasn't the 1st time they've had to flee. one of putin's was on what you want. it made me live here as a last resort. do you understand what you many of us are from done bass. we came here from war just to simply live and war came here after a se love, we are peaceful people. we don't want anything bad. we just want to live what law. however, new hike you were brought the human rummage to the most important thing is that it doesn't happen again. person could come back at any time even to morrow. their building was also badly damaged by rocket fire. one woman shows me where her flat used to be several almost by now. this was my bedroom and there was
2:14 pm
a balcony behind it larger and no, there is no balcony there at all or so. um, my things were, they are like a little away switch, which i know its gone. oh, but on the wire, russian soldiers may have left a pin, but this is the city that's been left in ruins. there isn't a building we can save. it doesn't, at least bear some scars of the war and many a ruined beyond repair. while the physical clean up is underway, the emotional scars will take a lot longer to heal. for many who fled when the war broke out, they have little left to come back to. but for those who stayed behind many will have an even bigger recovery to contend with. i. if the wall comes again, i will survive in any case. i will always survive because i have a bear and he protects me. oh, near shy one. yes. this is shad yard de la shortness. i still get frightened
2:15 pm
by every loud noise which i don't know if it will ever go away but for now. and that's how i am more than lesser ordinance of talk. the not so silent trauma that my live on in their lives forever. you're watching dw news still to come. we catch up with ukrainian football team, displaced by the war. now touring the world to raise money for their country streams. the 1st people in russia are taking to social media to show their support for their army in the war in ukraine, posts and videos with the hash tag, white arm band have been widely shared online, particularly by state employees, regional politicians, and teachers, as well as entire school classes, russian children have been involved in several online flash mob since the war began
2:16 pm
. the white arm band hash tag picks up on the strips of white fabric. the russian soldiers were around their arms legs to distinguish them from ukrainians in the war . russians say tv has been presenting the war in ukraine as an operation to liberate ukrainians. let's have a listen to some of the social media videos. people have been posting my, our ration our army might strength and bravery was like, we support our army guys, the deal every what makes their own choice. i to pull irrational me and our president, this white ombang shows he's on our side levy. we see what is happening in ukraine . we see how our guys are saving civilians from shooting and freeing them from radicals. but if you call them cars the deal, it's everyone makes their own choice. but we support the russian army dis, white. our men distinguishes our guys who to live like us. our former russia corresponded emily, sherwin explained to me how these white arm bands came to symbolize support for
2:17 pm
russian troops and rushes role in the war. while the white are mans are inspired by the pieces of white fabric that russian soldiers have been pictured wearing in ukraine, apparently they're supposed to distinguish them from ukrainian soldiers. and of course, white also has the association with peace. and as one user wrote with the bright future that these russian soldiers are apparently fighting for in ukraine. of course, the kremlin narrative is that this is not a war, but a special operation. protecting russian speakers in ukraine. um, you know, from a legit nazis in the country and you know, they're emphasizing as well that there are no civilian casualties or very few for people outside of rushes. kind of hard to wrap your mind around what you just said . how wide spread is this public display of support for russia in ukraine? well, you just mentioned that many of those social media posts are from state employees.
2:18 pm
and the big question with these kind of patriotic flash mobs that we've been seeing online, including the white arm band is how much are they a grass roots operation, let's say bought him up, you know, real expression of support. and how much are they kind of being ordered from above, from local administrations and so on. a lot of the posts that i saw when it comes to white arm band have exactly the same phrasing. and they're just the newest in a series of patriotic kind of posts on line. people have been also standing in formations of disease, you know, which have been seen on russian tanks, for example. and there are also reports that some universities received recommendations directly from the president admin presidential administration, that they should put these these up on their buildings on their websites, and so on. now we saw children in these, in these videos are for some, again, watching this, this is hard to imagine that children are being instrumental lives for this is the
2:19 pm
coming from the government, or how is that? we've seen that a lot. yeah. but, you know, children posing as i said in the letter z and so on, letter writing campaigns to russian soldiers at schools that are then so shown as well and stay tv. it seems that there is a pretty wide spread discussion within russia at the moment about education. patriotic education. one presidential aid suggested that perhaps russians in schools should be pledging allegiance to the russian flag or the russian state. sort of like in america. today there's a decision on that history should be taught from the 1st grade on, rather than from a 5th grade, which with an emphasis as well on the 2nd world war which his course is a big part of the narrative of surrounding this war. and there is reports as well that schools and universities are actually receiving materials and pamphlets saying how they should talk about the war. so in one report, for example, there is a sample question and answer for teachers. if a student asks you, was this war avoidable?
2:20 pm
you're supposed to say, this isn't a war with ukraine, but a special peacekeeping mission to fight against nationalists, who've been suppressing russian speaker. so as you see parallel worlds here very much so, from this perspective, from outside of russia, you know, we get reports that many russian soldiers have been killed in the war of their families in russia who are losing their, their fathers, they're, they're brothers. is that having any impact on public perception of the war in russia? well, i think a lot of the reports, you know, are being kept quiet of casualties. we've also heard reports including from the ukrainian side that there are mo bile cream atoria being used on site in ukraine, including, i think for some of the russian soldiers, perhaps as well as for civilian and other victims on the ukrainian side. so it may be that some people, certainly, you know, back in russia don't even know about their relatives being killed in this war. and
2:21 pm
we've seen that as well with the russian flagship, which seems with songs must be the most ha, that the, it's only really through the, the work of, of critical russian journalists who have been digging into this, that they're trying to find out whether there have been casualties on that ship because the russian official side at least is, is keeping that quiet for the moment. emily, thank you very much, shar, correspond emily sherman it's catch up on some of the stories making headlines around the world today. at least 6 people have been killed in explosions near school in the afghan capital cobble. the security official says the blasts were caused by hand grenades. no perpetrator is yet been identified, but the school is in a mostly shiite muslim neighborhood, which has previously been a target of the so called islamic state. israel says it's war. planes have struck the gaza strip after the israeli military intercepted a missile fired from the palestinian territory. hamas which controls gaza,
2:22 pm
claimed israel hit empty sites. the incident fall was a weekend of israeli palestinian violence in and around jerusalem's alex, a mosque. united states government will no longer enforce the wearing of masks on public transport. this follows ruling from the federal court in florida that the directive is unlawful, overturning a key white house ever to return to reduce the spread of coven 19. the move prompted several major airlines to draw their mask mandates. the war in ukraine is affecting all aspects of life, including sport, with the football league, suspended after the invasion. ukrainian club shocked todd announced, embarked on a tour of charity games. they nicknamed the global tour for peace. their 1st matches took them to greece and poland, and today they're playing found about she is stumble,
2:23 pm
the games aim to raise money for ukraine's military and help ukrainians displaced by the war. i hardly a moment goes by when me calamity ankle isn't thinking about the war. back home in ukraine. even here on the training field, in the tucker city of a stumble. before the horse with a thud, say for much, for your hunt. in your heart, if you want to stay there and help all of your people go arkenberg already, but your brain seems to tell you that infected me. you can't do anything sister to little. and the only thing you know how to do that can help the country is playing football at our football, marty ankle and shocked our donnette have had to run from bombs before in 2014 fighting between government forces and pro russian separatists broke out in east and ukraine shocked us stadium. the don bus arena was badly damaged by shelling. so

2:25 pm
very hard now shocked, tom is on the moons again, although ukrainian men of military age are currently required to stay in the country. micheler and his teammates were given special government permission to leave in early april. here in istanbul, they are now preparing for a series of friends lease all over europe to raise awareness and money for the war effort in ukraine. the 1st friendly match was in greece against olympia. accost won't accept basra sir hub in yet. what unites us as a team is more than football. football. we share a common tragedy or did that? i heard there was one in the game against olympia, coastal oak. if we were t shirts with the names of the cities that were attacked by the russian army, because on bill nas wine out of though i thought it was the whole world should know the names of the cities or any sort of she, even the people who don't know about it yet, rainbows in his life,
