3:01 pm
a ruined beyond repair. residents of kias suburbs, find solace in the cleaning up living with the fear that the russians might return and raising awareness and money with football. ukraine's shocked auto nets complete the war and are now touring the world seeking support for their home country. ah hello m. terry martin, good to have you with us 7 weeks into its war with ukraine. moscow has announced the beginning of a new stage in the conflict. after spending days regrouping in the areas already under russian control scene here in blue, hooton's troops now appear to have launched a full scale offensive in ukraine's don bus region. the new front line is marked
3:02 pm
and writ. moscow backed separatists have been fighting for control over the eastern territory. for years. after suffering heavy setbacks round, keir the kremlin declared seizing the dawn bus. the main goal of its so called special military operation. shots fired on the front line. ukraine says these are some of the opening. salvoes in rush is offensive in the east. in footage, released by the ukrainian defense ministry troops to say they are ready to defend the don bus. it's when we let them come. this soldier says they will stay here forever. there is enough land to bury them all. ukraine's president confirmed the stock of the new phase in the war. in that us zamora, we can now state that russian troops had begun the battle for the dawn about a slot for which they hadn't been preparing for a long time. since, here is a significant part of the entire russian army is now concentrated on this offensive . no matter how many russian troops are driven there, and we will fight,
3:03 pm
we will defend ourselves and we will do it every day that we won't give up any thing. ukrainian green school navy, the more ah thousands of residents and now tracked in towns under constant shelling this woman lives in the remains of a village near the front line. she describes living in anew. no man's land must love you so that when you find we don't even know where the shelling comes from. here we wait for it from there. now thinking that the ukrainian army will protect as yet, then it comes from there. you pretty know that there shelling from all directions is that one humanitarian groups race to evacuate. sic an elderly residents from the contested donates region, adding to the estimated 10000000 ukrainians who have now fled their homes by any means possible. led through by susan,
3:04 pm
the main difficulty is that people who have problems moving you had to be evacuated, or you very old people who are living there final days or weeks or months. and that's why it was so difficult. you watch. and olga with russian forces in control of much of the south and east one pocket of resistance remains the as of style steel plant in mario paul, several 1000 ukrainian forces are entrenched here under heavy attack. on tuesday, russia issued yet another deadline for them to give up their arms. but here as elsewhere, ukrainians are refusing to receive any of their territory without a fight. a report her mental shaws is in the western ukrainian city of levine. she told us a short while ago how people there been reacting to the news of rushes. don bass offensive while terry i'm here in the very centre of leave in the western part of
3:05 pm
the country which have been relates of the sped by the fights we so happening in the eastern part of ukraine. but you can see around me, life is, is seemingly going on, you know, people here are in those trees, they're tending today business days. but you can feel that they, they were, they were preparing themselves for that's offensive. that's rash and offensive. is some parts of the country in the boss. you can, you can when you talk to them. i did tell you they were prepared. they were expecting it to happen. they were expecting this new phase of fighting happening that just bracing themselves themselves for the wes and you know, yesterday the be itself had been hit by several me saw s 2. so it does feel here that even if this region has been fed, it does feel that the fighting is intensifying all over. the country, or a lot of attention is now being focused on the port city of mario pole that the
3:06 pm
seized port city, where it said that it, a number of ukrainian troops are still hold out. the russia is called on those troops to lay down their arms again. what, what? what's known about the situation in mario poll, emma? well, it is fair to feel hundreds of thousands of civilians. we trot in the city before the war. there was 400000 civilians in mar, you fall, and maybe as much of the call tell them off to in the city. especially worrying the situation in the mid logical side of the stall where the ukrainian army is holding its position. the russians have called on a sold is it not on the government to surrender their forces, they hold on to individually surrender,
3:07 pm
but also civilians. hundreds of civilians who, who sold shots are in dots side on side. so they are fees no to me, facilities, but also for civilians who are chopped. mario poll, which has become a highly symbolic place for quite a full seas. this is where they are still standing and they said they will fight until the end them a thank you very much. our correspondent, michelle, they're in la beef. russia's foreign minister has now confirmed the beginning of this new stage and what the kremlin calls its special military operation. sorry, lab for off made the statement in an interview on indian television. let's hear what he had to say. the ration in the east of ukraine is aimed as was announced from the very beginning to fully literate than yes, can look on screen publix. and this a duration will, will continue. because beginning,
3:08 pm
i mean another stage of this or duration is beginning. and then show this will be very important moment of this entire special iteration w. russia analyst konstantin egg told me in the last hour that russia has had to change your strategy because it failed to achieve its objectives. in the 1st few days of the invasion already frankly, i lost count of all the stages and steps and whatever in the last 50 full days. but it's clear that our watch began as a march on key, which was supposed to take probably a few days. now turned into full blown or, and i think that by now the, the real goal is actually securing as much as possible of the danielle to can lew house law. and securing a lend bridge, show you a little bit between the russian federation proper is recognized in international
3:09 pm
board international borders and then next crimea. and in this respect, i think nobody will, is the most important flash point. now, for the russians, because this is in the end where the this land bridge can be created and at least this is where you can and out did that, that they did. great. now report suggests that the russian offensive in ukraine has been plagued by problems with logistics and morale, or russian forces really up for taking on ukraine's best equipped and most experienced soldiers in the east constantine. well, good question. some military analysts out whom i spoke the last couple of days say that maybe there are songs that of some problems with the logistics are, are being fixed or at least to the russian forces are trying to fix this is kind of
3:10 pm
overstretched columns of supply. shouldn't appear, there are, at least that's what the military experts say. but as far as morale goes, well, it's not going to be as high as the ukrainian morale because the overall sort of goal of this operation is much more murky. you are from 20 of the russians got by this stage all by the rule. and there will be lots of people fighting just to endanger that conference. and this is a very powerful, powerful elements of motivation for a professional, semi professional soldier. so i think that there's going to be a talk fighting, but as you rightly said, ukrainians defending their homeland, they do feel that they're in their own rights. and this is an enormous boost for anyone doing whole do you have any reason to believe, konstantin, that putin would stop if he manages to capture the don bas,
3:11 pm
how big is the risk that he will keep going with his territorial ambitions? well, i think that for now, you won't be able to go much further off to the sinking of the moscow cruiser and any attempt, for example, log by an amphibious operation to capture odessa. now the main port in the west ukraine will be doomed without basically the air color which must be provided. so i think that don't boss is still as such a as the area is a huge chunk to swallow who moscow. and i'm not sure that they will be able to do that. so i think that they will have to present something to the public by the 9th of may b, j, which could have made the main as the st. rush of the red dates and the calendar off to that we'll see. but frankly, harry, even of them managed to capture don boss, which will de mom huge forces. i'm not certain they'll be able to hold as much contain. thank you so much. is always saw. are russia expert, konstantin,
3:12 pm
i got there with russia now focusing on the dumbass region. some ukrainians and other parts of the country are returning to their homes or what's left to them. the w correspond rebecca rivers traveled to the city of your pin where residence have started to rebuild, despite their fear that the calm may not last one thing that strikes ye when you enter a pain is the silence. these once bustling straits now scorched and deserted, then sometimes the silence is broken. by the sound of people trying to put their lives back together. i have nothing to my wrath. 300 square meters of roof is missing. above full of the apartment is nothing but the blue sky above the top of the thing and abba older is the caretaker of these $82.00 flats. and she lives in one of the top drama with this to my apartment is in this part of the building that was damaged by missiles. she stayed right through the
3:13 pm
occupation to try to save them from russian soldiers taking them over, but was helpless to stop. the missiles murmured over, now it is in this state. the house is uninhabitable until we rebuild it. do you more next door to olga. another group with a similar story. they tell me this wasn't the 1st time they've had to flee. one of putin's was on what you hold here. i made me live here as a last resort. do you understand what many of us are from done? bass, we came here from war just to simply live and war came here after us. se love, we are peaceful people. we don't want anything bad. we just want to live what law, horror, new, hiking him. what brought the heck you? rubbish! the most important thing is that it doesn't happen again. person could come back at any time even to morrow. they are building was also badly damaged by rocket fire. one woman shows me where her flat used to be. several on mass fighting. yeah,
3:14 pm
this was my bedroom and there was a balcony behind it larger and now there is no balcony there at all or so. um, my things were there like a little away says which of it which i know its gone off, but i own a mile russian soldiers may have left a peam, but this is a city that's been left in ruins. there isn't a building we can say that doesn't at least bear some scars of the war and many a ruined beyond repair. while the physical clean up is underway, the emotional scars will take a lot longer to heal. for many who fled when the war broke out, they have little left to come back to. but for those who stayed behind many will have an even bigger recovery to contend with. die. if the wall comes again, i will survive in any case. i will always survive because i have
3:15 pm
a bear and he protects me. near sky vanessa, shad yards de la shortness i still get frightened by every loud noise which i don't know if it will ever go away. but for night. yeah, that's how i am more than less you wouldn't have to talk about the not so silent trauma that may live on in their lives forever. people in russia are taking the social media to show their support for their army in the war in ukraine, posts and videos with the hash tag, white arm band have been widely shared online, particularly by state employees, regional politicians, and teachers as well as entire school classes. russian children have been involved in several online flash mobs since the war began. the white arm band hash tag picks up on the strips of white fabric, the russian soldiers where around their arms and legs to distinguish them from ukrainians in the war. russians stay,
3:16 pm
tv has been presenting the war in ukraine as an operation to liberate ukrainians. so to listen to some of the social media videos, people have been posting law, our russia, our army might strength and bravery. when we support our army, gusty gilly, effie. what makes their own choice? i suppose the russian army and our president, this white ombang shows who's on our side levy. we see what is happening in ukraine . we see how our guys are saving civilians from shooting and freeing them from radicals. but if you call them cars the deal, it's everyone makes their own choice. we support the russian army to swipe our man . distinguishes our guys you to lose luckless and our former russia correspondent, emily sure. when explained how these white arm bands came to symbolize support for russian troops and russia's role in the war. while the white are mans are inspired by the pieces of white fabric that a russian soldiers have been pictured wearing in ukraine. apparently they're
3:17 pm
supposed to distinguish them from ukrainian soldiers. and of course, white also has the association with peace and as one user wrote with the bright future that these russian soldiers are apparently fighting for in ukraine. of course, the kremlin narrative is that this is not a war, but a special operation. protecting russian speakers in ukraine. um you know, from a legit nazis in the country. and um, you know, they are emphasizing as well that there are no civilian casualties or very few for people outside of rushes. kind of hard to wrap your mind around what you just said a how wide spread is this public display of support for russia in ukraine. while you just mentioned at our many of those social media posts are from state employees. and the big question with these kind of patriotic flash mobs that we've been seeing online, including the white arm band is how much are they a grass roots operation, let's say bought him up, you know,
3:18 pm
real expression of support. and how much are they kind of being ordered from above, from local administrations and so on. a lot of the posts that i saw when it comes to white arm band have exactly the same phrasing. and they're just the newest in a series of patriotic kind of posts on line. people have been also standing in formations of disease, you know, which have been seen on russian tanks, for example. um, and there are also reports that some universities received recommendations directly from the president admin and presidential administration. that they should put these these up on their buildings on their websites and so on. now we saw children in these, in these videos are for some, again, watching this, this is hard to imagine that children are being instrumental lives for this is the coming from the government or how is that? and we've seen that a lot. yeah. but, you know, children posing as i said in the letter z and so on,
3:19 pm
letter writing campaigns to russian soldiers at schools that are then so shown as well and stay tv. it seems that there is a pretty wide spread discussion within russia at the moment about education. patriotic education. one presidential aid suggested that perhaps russians in schools should be pledging allegiance to the russian flag or the russian state. sort of like in america. today there's a decision that history should be taught from the 1st grade on, rather than from a 5th grade, which with an emphasis as well on the 2nd world war which his course is a big part of the, of the narrative of surrounding this war. and there is reports as well that schools and universities are actually receiving materials and pamphlets saying how they should talk about the war. so in one report, for example, there is a sample question and answer for teachers. if a student asks you, was this war avoidable? you're supposed to say, this isn't a war with ukraine, but a special peacekeeping mission to fight against nationalists, who've been suppressing russian speaker. so as you see parallel worlds here,
3:20 pm
very much so, from this perspective, from outside of russia, you know, we get reports that many russian soldiers have been killed in the war of their families in russia who are losing their, their fathers, they're, they're brothers. is that having any impact on public perception of the war in russia? well, i think a lot of the reports, you know, are being kept quiet of casualties. we've also heard reports including from the ukrainian side that there are mo bile cream atoria being used on site in ukraine. including, i think for some of the russian soldiers, perhaps as well as for civilian and other victims on the ukrainian side. so it may be that some people, certainly, you know, back in russia don't even know about their relatives being killed in this war. and we've seen that as well with the russian flagship, which seems with songs must, must ha, that a, it's only really through the work of,
3:21 pm
of critical russian journalists who have been digging into this, that they're trying to find out whether there have been casualties on that ship because the russian official side at least is, is keeping that quiet for the moment. and really thank you very much, shar, correspond, emily, sherwin sketch up on some of the stories making headlines around the world. today, at least 6 people have been killed in explosions near a school in the afghan capital cobble, a security official says the blasts were caused by hand grenades. no perpetrator has been identified yet, but the school is in a mostly shiite muslim neighborhood, which has previously been a target of the so called islamic state. israel says it's war. planes have struck the gaza strip after these really military intercepted a missile fired from the palestinian territory. hamas which controls garza claimed israel hit empty sites. the incident follows

a weekend of israeli palestinian violence in and around jerusalem's oxen malls. the united states government will no longer enforce the wearing of masks on public transport. this fall was a ruling from a federal court in florida that the directive is unlawful, overturning a key white house effort to reduce the spread of coven 19. the move prompted several major airlines to draw their mask mandates. store in ukraine is affecting all aspects of life, including sport well, with the football league suspended after the invasion. ukrainian club shocked harder nach embarked on a tour of charity games. they nicknamed the global tour for peace. their 1st match took them to greece and poland, and today they're playing fairly basha is stumble. the games aim to raise money for ukraine's military and help ukrainians displaced by the war. i hardly a moment goes by. when me, calamity ankle isn't thinking about the war,
