8:02 am
armed with both the ham gun and a semi automatic rifle. odd, the suspect is deceased. at this point, the dps is assisting with the investigation, and at this point investigation is leading to tell us that the, the suspect a did act alone or during this heinous crime. president joe biden returned home to a country reeling from another. ma, shooting, asking the questions on the minds of many why are we willing to live with this card each? why don't we keep letting this happen? we're in god's name is our backbone. to the courage, a do of a stand up to the lobby. sh. amid the pres platitudes and familiar symbols of public morning anger at to assist them, paralyzed by politics, costing the lives of ordinary americans. what are we doing?
8:03 am
what are we doing? just days after a shooter walked into a grocery store to gone down african american patrons, we have another sandy hook on our hands. what are we doing with $200.00 must shootings in the us this year alone. the debate of a gun control has rarely been out of the headlines. hillary clinton says america is becoming a nation of anguished. screams this small town in texas. just the latest place you'll hear the cries of pain over young lies could tragically shalt spring in our washington correspondence to make some a scandal here. assuming what or can you tell us about what happened at that texas school? terry,
8:04 am
we are getting more pictures of pieces of the picture coming in to us and as you said, 19 children dead and at least 2 adults. we know that others are still being treated in the hospital. we don't know how many, but we should say that the death toll could continue to rise among the students. i want to underline. we're talking about kids who are in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade. so here in the u. s that means kids from around 6 years old to around 11 who attended this elementary school and authorities of the night of, in speaking with the families of the victims, taking dna samples to identified children. and they've said that they will only release more information to the public to the media. once all of the families have received a full information about their loved ones, we don't know how long that process will take. as for the shooting at, we know this was a lone gunman, 18 years old. she attended the high school in val day and we heard that he actually shot his grandmother before getting the car. heading to the school he went in and
8:05 am
proceeded to shoot in this classroom. these classrooms being reported that he had a rifle that he purchased legally on his 18th birthday, and that he was wearing a body armor of some sort. and terry, i just want to add about this community. it's a very small community, fairly close to the mexican border, heavily latino, latina and this was the end of the school year. we're hearing heartbreaking details that in this elementary school there was actually an honors awards ceremony just hours before the shooting. parents attended that these kids were just a few days away from summer vacation. and now these parents facing an unspeakable tragedy. some of them are not going home with their children. do we know anything about the motive of the shooter? so me authorities are trying to piece that together right now. there are federal and local law enforcement agencies on the ground picking apart evidence. we know from other mast shootings in the u. s. that a social media accounts are really important. and apparently this shooter did post some violent messages online. but we don't know, terry,
8:06 am
if he attended this elementary school at any point, whether he intended to attack this school at all, or most importantly why he would commit this crime will made it waiting for more details to come in on that. and we heard present joe biden urging the nation to stand up to the gun lobby. we've heard those appeals before. of course, is there any chance that this time gun laws will be changed to make these my shootings less likely? there seems to be very little chance of that, terry. i mean, as you said, there was an emotional address from president biden demanding action. we heard that echoed across washington from democratic senators representatives, and this is just 10 days after the racist rampage in a supermarket. and buffalo that killed 10 black americans. you know, there has been bipartisan support in the house of representatives to pass what is called common sense gun regulation to strengthen background checks, restrict who connects us weapons. but that has always hit a wall in the senate where republicans have blocked any efforts to move forward.
8:07 am
and indeed we saw republicans saying in the aftermath of the shooting, that it is time to actually step off armed protection at schools rather than regulation. so again, terry avenue for change does look slim here, and i just want to add president biden asking the question and as address a are we ready to take on the gun lobby and the national rifle association. the in our re, one of the most powerful lobby groups in the u. s. is actually holding its annual convention in texas this weekend among the announced speakers of the former president, donald trump sumi, thank you so much. our washington correspondents, so me so much county there. now russia is stepping up its attacks on ukraine's eastern don bass region. heavy fighting is reported in and around the town of spirit on that. the regional governor says 12 people were killed by shelling. moscow says it will continue, it's offensive until it achieves its goals in his nightly address ukrainian
8:08 am
president below him, his lansky warned that russia is bent on destroying everything in don bos. zalinski also pay tribute to the fierce resistance put up by the ukrainian people. my mummy of thought as i was, we must always remember that we have withstood these 3 months. the thanks to dozens of thousands of feet from all who defend the state. not so i'm accosted tens of thousands of lines of ukrainian men and women killed by the occupiers wally open. dw mathias bellinger is in the city of crime. a toss can ukraine's eastern don bass region and joins me now from there. mathias, how is ukraine doing? and it's have her to defend its territory and don't bus well all over the resiliency places like this. so rockets all or shells, depending on where you are, all heating all over the region and that's of course, a big distress. you can hear the air raid siren, i think,

here in trauma tours and it's on several times a day. and the stress is very big and we are seeing russian troops advance. now these advance is often described as incremental, sometimes a whole village, sometimes just a few few meters or kilometers, but at the ending up actually and the pressure is very high on the ukranian troops . now, there are a sebra donetta that you've just mentioned, and the neighboring city of lisa chance are at risk of beating, being cut off from the world from, from the rest of the country. and that would be a few dozens of thousands of people being trapped there. the 2 weeks listed chance has been without water. today, a truck is expected to bring drinking water and others have been standing here for
8:10 am
hours active. no one knows when they're going to bring it more than 20000 people to remain in the city. fighting along the main road has made access difficult, and the city itself is by no means a st. how do you think of these normal living conditions? it's very difficult at all with this roaring funder above your head of the a few kilometers from here, things are even more tire to city of c over the net because under constant fire, a bridge that leads there has been bombed, effectively trapping those who remain there that is a fade that could also weighed, listed shuns, if fighting along the road continues,
8:11 am
the city has already taken quite a few hits. the government is trying to arrange evacuations while it's still possible. a few dozen people have been told that the bus would pick them up today and they were hoping that things might be ok. but when shell sly of your head and houses are burning, you just feel, but you can't go on. our nerves direct year when you nobody knows when the bus is coming and there's no way to ask internet and phone service down in the basement about 80 people have been sheltering for weeks some since the beginning of the war. mommy, mom, i will, you later will you be the buses? mom says she would go if she knew where it's safe, but she doesn't know where to go to work for
8:12 am
me. it has been given 10 liters of water. that's all for today. she and a neighbor girl, you know, we'll have to come back soon at night. they stay in the basement dark. this is how we get down here. the whole neighborhood has moved into basement 1234. and over there 6 people living here. there's always fear that the next shell my team here, you know, i feel sorry for my cap, them myself. you cry every 5 minutes? sure. what will happen to him if i die will bury him. don't worry the evening is approaching 2 days of
8:13 am
a curation bus has not arrived yet. nobody knows when it was to come on, not mathias, we saw in your reports. people hoping a bus would come to evacuate them. how difficult is it to arrange evacuations from those areas that russian troops are advancing on we were told that this bus came late at night that day, but other attempts have failed, or they have partly failed. there was another evacuation scheduled after that. when it was when the, when they were able to just evacuate, seeks people, although they were hoping to evacuate around 40. but it was impossible, obviously for the people to get to the evacuation point. the buses that run their alma ve goes because there is always the danger of being shot out when they leave the city. so things are very dia and the, the window where it's still possible to evacuate people from there seems to be
