ah ah ah, this is dw news coming to lie from berlin. 19 children dead in a school shooting in the united states. families endure an agonizing way to us authorities confirm the identities of those shot dead by a gunman at an elementary school in texas. president joe biden asks, when will america stand up to the gun lobby? also coming up,

russia steps up into tax on ukraine's don't. boss region followed me as lensky says, moscow wants to destroy everything there. and he hales the courage of his people in resisting the invasion. plus south korea says the north may be preparing for a possible nuclear test after young fires, all 3 more ballistic missile. ah hello, i'm terry martin. good to have you with us. we begin in the u. s, where 19 children and 2 adults have been killed in a school shooting in texas. the attack happened at an elementary school in the town of u baldy, near the mexican border. police kill the 18 year old shooter. president joe biden has ordered flags to be flown at half mast, and he's urging americans to stand up to the gun lobby. now we have
10:02 am
a gripping plea after yet not the mass shooting. when are we gotta do something? i'm tired, i'm so i'm so tired of getting up urine, offering condolences to to the devastated families that are out there. i'm so tired of skews more, i'm sorry, i'm tired of moments of silence enough. at least 19 children and 2 teachers were killed at this texas elementary school. the suspected tudor in 18 year old was believed to be armed with both a hand gun in a semi automatic rifle. odd, the suspect is deceased. at this point, bar d, p. s is assisting with the investigation, and at this point, the investigation is leading to tell us that the, the suspect a bid act alone during this heinous crime, president joe biden returned home to
10:03 am
a country reeling from another mass shooting, asking the questions on the minds of many, why are we willing to live with this current each? why don't we keep letting this happen? we're in god's name is our backbone. to have the courage to do with a stand up the lobby's, grieving families waiting to know if their kid survived. we can get anything we can get any of anything as little as they're okay. they're not okay. or was the waiting or you know, no, no information has been received. any of the parents are a desperate weight, but not an isolated incident that already been more than $200.00 mass shootings in the us this year. something fought to, many family members and friends have to go through the w's sumi, some a scandal is monitoring the story from washington short while ago she gave us this update. terry,
10:04 am
we are getting more pictures of pieces of the picture coming in to us. and as you said, 19 children dead and at least 2 adults, we know that others are still being treated in the hospital. we don't know how many, but we should say that the death toll could continue to rise among the students i want to underline. we're talking about kids who are in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade. so here in the u. s, that means kids from around 6 years old to around 11 who attended this elementary school and authority. so the night of, in speaking with the families of the victims, taking dna samples to identified children. and they've said that they will only release more information to the public, to the media. once all of the families have received a full information about their loved ones, we don't know how long that process will take. as for the shooting at, we know this was a lone gunman, 18 years old. she attended the high school in val day and we heard that he actually shot his grandmother before getting the car. heading to the school, he went in and proceeded to shoot in this classroom. these classrooms being
10:05 am
reported that he had a rifle that he purchased legally on his 18th birthday, and that he was wearing a body armor of some sort. and terry, i just want to add about this community. it's a very small community, fairly close to the mexican border, heavily latino, latina and this was the end of the school year. we're hearing, heartbreaking details that in this elementary school there was actually an honors awards ceremony just hours before the shooting. parents attended that. these kids were just a few days away from summer vacation, and now these parents facing an unspeakable tragedy. some of them are not going home with their children. do we know anything about the motive of the shooter? so me authorities are trying to piece that together right now. there are federal and local law enforcement agencies on the ground picking apart evidence. we know from other mast shootings in the us that social media accounts are really important . and apparently, this shooter did post some violent messages online,
10:06 am
but we don't know terry, if he attended this elementary school at any point, whether he intended to attack this school at all, or most importantly why he would commit this crime. we're made it waiting for more details to come in on that. and we heard from president joe biden urging the nation to stand up to the gun lobby. we've heard there's appeals before, of course. is there any chance that this time gun laws will be changed to make these my shootings less likely? there seems to be very little chance of that, terry. i mean, as you said, there was an emotional address from president biden demanding action. we heard that echoed across washington from democratic senators representatives, and this is just 10 days after the racist rampage in a supermarket and buffalo that killed 10 black americans. you know, there has been bipartisan support in the house of representatives to pass what is called common sense gun regulation to strengthen background checks, restrict who connects us weapons. but that has always hit a wall in the senate where republicans have blocked any efforts to move forward.
10:07 am
and indeed we saw republicans saying in the aftermath of the shooting, that it is time to actually step off armed protection at schools rather than regulation. so again, terry avenue for change does look slim here, and i just want to add president biden asking the question and as address a are we ready to take on the gun lobby and the national rifle association. the, in our re, one of the most powerful lobby groups in the u. s. is actually holding its annual convention in texas this weekend among the announced speakers of the former president donald trump. so, me, thank you so much our washington correspondence to me. so it's kind of there russia is stepping up its attacks on eastern, on ukraine's eastern dumbass region. heavy fighting is reported in and around the town of savannah jeanette's. the regional governor says 12 people were killed by shelling. moscow says it will continue. it's offensive until it achieves its goals . in his nightly address ukrainian president,
10:08 am
the loudermilk lensky warned that russia is bent on destroying everything and don't boss. so landscape also pay tribute to the fierce resistance put up by the ukrainian people. my mom brought me a thought as i was, we must always remember that we have withstood these 3 months. the thanks to dozens of thousands of feet from all who defend the state now, so does out on the cost of tens of thousands of lines of ukrainian men and women killed by the occupiers. wally opened our correspond. mathias billing is in carla torres can eastern ukraine. he spoke to us earlier during an air alert. i asked him how ukraine is doing in its efforts to defend its territory. well, all over the reason you see places like this. so rockets all or shells, depending on where you are, all heating all over the region and that's of course a big distress. you can hear the air raid siren. i think you're hearing trauma tours and it's on several times a day. and the stress is very big and we are seeing russian troops advance. now
10:09 am
these advance is often described as incremental, sometimes a whole village, sometimes just a few few meters or kilometers. but at the ending up actually, and the pressure is very high on the ukranian troops. now there are a silverado net that you've just mentioned on the neighboring city of the st. john's are at risk of beating, being cut off from the world from, from the rest of the country. would be a few dozens of thousands of people being trapped there. 2 weeks, lucy, chance has been without water today, a truck is expected to bring drinking water and others have been standing here for hours. actors, no one knows when they're going to bring it more than 20000 people to remain in the city. fighting along the main road has made access difficult,
10:10 am
and the city itself is by no means a st. have no. do you think of these normally living conditions? it's very difficult at all with this roaring funder above your head, full of the a few kilometers from here. things that even more dia, this is the city of c over the net because under constant fire, a bridge that leads there has been bombed, effectively trapping those who remain there. that is a fade that could also weighed, listed shuns, if fighting along the road continues, the city has already taken quite a few hits. the government is trying to arrange evacuations while it's still
10:11 am
possible. a few dozen people have been told that the bus would pick them up today and i were hoping that things might be okay. but when shells fly of your head and houses are burning, you just feel that you can't go on. you. our nerves erect yet going in there and nobody knows when the bus is coming and there's no way to ask internet and phone service are down in the basement. about 80 people have been sheltering for weeks some since the beginning of the war. mama, mama. oh yeah, laser with an odd bit of buffers, mom says she would go if she knew where it's safe, but she doesn't know where to go to. you want to please like lira has been given 10 liters of water. that's all for to day. she and
10:12 am
a neighbor galena will have to come back soon. at night, they stay in the basement with dark. this is how we get down here. is all the whole neighborhood has moved into basement. have 1234. and over there 6 people living here. there's always fear that the next shell might it here. i feel sorry for my cat. them myself. you cry every 5 minutes? sure. what will happen to him if i die? i will bury him. don't worry. the evening is approaching. today's evacuation bus has not arrived yet. nobody knows whether it was to come or not but he,
10:13 am
as we saw in your report and people hoping a bus would come to evacuate them. how difficult is it to arrange evacuations from those areas that russian troops are advancing on we were told that this bus came late at night that day, but other attempts have failed, or they have partly failed. there was another evacuation scheduled after that. when it was when the, when they were able to just evacuate 6 people, although they were hoping to evacuate around 40. but it was impossible, obviously for the people to get to the evacuation point. the buses that run their alma t, v goes because there is always the danger of being shot at when they leave the city . so things are very dire and the the window where it's still possible to evacuate people from this seems to be closing. montez. thank you. very much the w mateus, putting a reporting from the city of carla tossed and ukraine's eastern on thus reaching
10:14 am
spring and simon cushion here. he's a professor of international security at zepplin university in leaks hop in germany . so i'm in thanks. ring with us. what's your assessment of the situation in ukraine's on bus region? is russia gaining the upper hand there? it indeed looks like that we're apparently entering a new phase in this war where russia is trying to push all its military efforts on the south eastern region of don boston to hans mainly in a, in an effort on putin side to, to change its war. his war efforts are moving for shifting from the invasion of ukraine proper, and the attacks on key f and capital to securing the southeastern region to have a safe se saving military success and found his population. now ukraine's president says he is unwilling to cede any territory to russia and is determined to force
10:15 am
russian troops out of his country permanently. do you think that's realistic? at this point it's, of course the ukraine is to decide what the terms of a future peace deal might be. but from my point of view are given the certainly to the current situation with no western direct and military involvement of pushing russia back. it looks like we're going to look reach a stalemate at some point. and so i think it's unrealistic to think that russia will give up these occupied territories as long as it sits there. and so the p steel might look more like a bosnian dayton like a solution in one which was which in 1999. so in $1095.00 where the ukraine will effectively be divided. but of course, that's all we're hoping for. there's tremendous international pressure on russia to
10:16 am
end its war in ukraine and withdrawal from the country. what impact do you, would you say that that pressure is actually having i think the economic pressure is quite substantial. however, there are 2 problems with this. the 1st problem is the lack of reliable data on the russian con. we just simply don't know how bad the russian economies really hit by the sanction so far. because putin and the russian regime are really covering up most of the effects. but we see some effectively isolation, unemployment, etc. the other thing is that those sanctions only build up a long term effect don't affect the realtor situation on the ground. remember that when western sanctions were implemented after crimea, after the crimea, it's annexation. it took over a year until we actually saw some economic effects and so that we already see some economic effects right now tells us that these sanctions are really hitting, worse or hard. finally, some,
10:17 am
it rushes aggression against ukraine. it's driven finland and sweden into the arms of nato. they want membership. now do you think that turkey's opposition to that can be overcome? and if so, how can we expect russia to respond? well, russia has putin has spectacularly failed in the bringing. you're dividing nato and rolling needle back in europe. in fact, the opposite has happened. nato's enlarging, which is, must be putin's nightmare. but of course, the problem with turkey persists, and here, i think time is of the essence to reach a compromise. given that we have an upcoming and nato summit in madrid at the end of june on the goals or the goals of to buy turkey are quite clear. they want a less political support to know political support for the a y b g and p k. k. are what they call terrorist organizations and their activities
10:18 am
in north, syria and turkey proper. and of course, the military arms embargo that is still in place by western allies, especially by the united states, which turkey once and the role and at some point they to will have to reach a compromise of that. and that has happened in the past. we have a president from a 2 years ago. 2020, with a similar situation when turkey blocked nato defense plans for the baltic region after crimea annexation some thank you very much for thought for talking with this . that was professor simon kasha zepplin university. thank you. is to look at some other stories making news connected to the war in ukraine, hungary prime minister, victor, oregon, has declared a new state of emergency because of the war in neighboring ukraine. emergency powers imposed during the pandemic were due to expire. critic say it means or been can restrict basic rights. former german chancellor gerhard schroeder says he has
10:19 am
turned down a seat on the board of the russian energy giant gas prom. shorda is a friend of president vladimir putin and has been criticized for refusing to cut his business ties to russia. russian judges have rejected an appeal by the opposition leader. lexi nevada need against a 9 year prison sentence for fraud in other alleged crimes. you will now be transferred from a penal camp to a high security prison of ali, used the hearing to condemn the war. south korea's military says north korea his pyre, 3 ballistic missiles. authorities in sole say. they were launched from pyongyang towards the sea of japan and appeared to be preparation for a possible nuclear test. united states and south korea carried out missile drills in response. u. s. present joe biden has just wrapped up a trip to asia during which he agreed to new measures to deter north korea.
10:20 am
and we can now talk to journalist jen kwan in seoul, south korea, jen. these missile tests come hot on the heels of a visit to the region by you as president joe biden. 2 analysts, there were, you are see a connection. well, it's not like a direct message to the u was per se, because it has been tested right after 12 hours after he left the regent. however, it does as a message to, to the region as in south korea and the us in japan saying that, oh, don't forget, i would, we still are, we are still here and we have missiles. and when you see the missile test today, most used to be just ballistic missile. but, but the 3rd missile that was fired launched today was one was an i c n, which is immediate, which is not an immediate threats to the us personnel or personnel territory. but
10:21 am
again, you and i got it, i'm sorry if so, if i were talking intercontinental ballistic missiles here, that's quite significant. let me ask you jet, how is sol responding to these tests? we heard south korea's new president, you and your say earlier this week, at the age of appeasing north korea is over. yes. the poor president's you moon has been a little bit more gentle, less per say on handling 2 or 3, and tried to call them back to dialogue. but you have been long as saying through his campaign that he wants to have a stronger hold on north korea. question is, who can really do this in a realistic manner? one of the things that they have shown is as soon as you and has been listed, the defense minutes. you have been giving more details on what kind of missiles husband launched from north korea before it was on identify projectiles. today they
10:22 am
are telling the kind of missiles and the length and the height and also saying that is a direct contradiction of un resolution and, and also what we haven't seen before the past years is joint. as soon as the north korean launch missiles, the west and south korea did their own drill. as you mentioned, they tested their south korean us missile units would condense. it now combined surface to surface missile launch, east sea, which is so called the sea of japan. and both the factory military and the americans did launch their, their missiles, some in 5 minutes different and some few seconds. ok, jen. thank you very much. that was journalist jen kwan. they're in soul now to sri lanka, the island in the indian ocean is facing is worse economic crisis and decades. the
