a separatist caught in the regions sentence 3 captured foreign fighters to death. the 2 britons and one moroccan were convicted of being mercenaries after a trial that lost it just 3 days. the u. k has slammed the ruling as a sham saying the geneva convention prohibits the prosecution of prisoners of war. but with russia opening over a 1000 investigations into other captured soldiers there and likely be the last to face trial or even death. d. w, you corresponded yon phillips shots is in keys earlier i spoke to him about the sentencing of these 3 foreign fight is bought. first. we talked about the latest on the fighting in the don bass region. ah, battles over the key cities of silverado, nets and bliss, he chance or continue and pay, continue with all fours and even with renewed st petals. ukrainian authorities say they still controlled parts of those cities, especially also parts of several, the nets and everything else. all the reports by the russian side that they've

taken over settled on it's pure propaganda. but the soldiers, the ukrainian, so just also stressed that they are desperately waiting for the delivery of lung arranged weapons and other artillery. the humanitarian situation in several minutes is increasingly difficult. one very important bridge needed needed for the delivery of humanitarian goods has come under fire. and we should also not forget that even though we focus a lot on the don bus region at the moment. so there's also fighting taking place in other parts of ukraine. the ukrainian military talked about son, military success, but also a lot of kill 2 civilians in regents more towards the center of the country and especially also in the north eastern parts in the area around how to keep now yon

phillip russian rebels in the don best region have sentence some foreign side is the death. what's been the reaction to these where you are all the people we have talked to officials and ordinary citizens on the street. they condemn a sentence and pe speak about a pure show trial ukrainians. officials stress that this last sentence, as of absolutely no legal significance because only ukrainian courts can take decisions on ukrainian territory and ukraine. also, it says those fighters are parts of the ukrainian military and as such, they deserve the treatment or treatment according to international conventions. regarding the treatment of prisoners of war,
9:07 am
the ukrainian government stresses they do everything that is possible to make sure that those prisoners can be released. now, john phillip ukrainian, president zalinski did invite foreign is to come and fight when the war started. do we know how significant of a role they're playing and how many there are it's difficult to say because there's very little official information about it, but i would say they are quite significant. there are even reports that they play a role in the current fighting and so that are done next. i think it's difficult to generalize their importance because there are many different types of fighters. there are a lot of highly trained soldiers, but they're also some not so welsh, rain adventurers, or at least in the beginning there were some not so well trained adventurers, but a lot of them were not accepted and they had to leave the country. so at the moment they are probably
9:08 am
a few thousands of foreign fighters in the ukrainian military. that's our correspondent in key of yon phillips shelves. john phillips, thank you. now the sentencing of those 3 man is certain to raise concerns for the fate of other captured foreign fighters. as early as february, the 27th ukraine announced the formation of a foreign legion. many of those who enlisted came from neighboring bella, bruce, they now see ukraine as they are only means of fighting. vladimir putin is growing influence. we've got more now from dw correspondent mathias bowling. there are no bullets to day, but soon these men will be fighting for the future against the russian army in this south. and they are serving in the ukrainian army. but they're all from bellows. susan, living with them putting legs, he joined up 8 years ago after that. my don protests when the conflict in the east

start ukraine is on the last 3 countries of the former soviet union in ukraine had lost its freedom during the my don protest if they had been repressed and there be no future for the whole region and of course it will not be crane and not for better reason. there are now several 100 alara, she fight is in ukraine enough to former regiment, and he fled their homes in 2020 when bellows dictator, alexander lucas shanker, cracked down on huge demonstrations against him. this man who didn't want to be identified by name to part in the protest. no, we don't usually not force them with motion. we were hoping to overthrow peaceful, ne, not. don't you proud in baton. dash to the question,
9:10 am
the regime held on we say my now is to do everything possible to destroy location code 3. she's in my question, mark of tre moves news to me that the idea is that the beller, russian, regina, so closely tied to russia that a defeat for putin would also be a defeat car shanker fighters. the war and ukraine is also about the future of their country. and they can't go home until things change. i mean, to kind of push a tour with them at the least, the lifelong imprisonment would await me. there are the worst force execution law thought that they could pin extremism on me for taking part in the protests in 2020 of, and on top of that, now that charge me as a mercenary for taking part and the war your wife wasn't. alexi was injured during the 2nd week of the war, wasn't a reconnaissance mission in butcher when

a shell blew away his leg. for now he trains new recruits waiting for a better prosthetic leg that will enable him to serve closer to the front again. at whistling amber, i never thought that i made my sacrifices and that would be it. people make sacrifices every day at the front. that's life. that's war. there was though, it may be a long way to go, but he says retiring from active duty is not an option. we can speak now to frank. let me choose a former british military officer. now our military analyst, he joins us from oxford, england. frank, good to see you. i want to ask you about these bela roots in a fight as in the, in a moment, but more broadly speaking, what has been the role of foreign armed groups in this war? well, john, and since the start of the start really was 2014,
9:12 am
this war has been heavily internationalized, especially about the ukrainian side. so the international needs of the territorial defense which young philip was talking about is composed of several nationalities veterans. of course we already spoken about, we'll talk about soon. we've got the georgians that are not of a significant group. and the check transfers are due to chechen battalions on the russian side. they to a, been trying, trying hard to get to the nationalities in maybe through the means of mercenaries, the credit report. they killed about 15 syrians down in dog bass a couple of months ago. but they've obviously failed to get how they need that. but on the credit side, yet there's quite a significant involvement of international groups. how close are the formal ties between this bella roost in melissa group and the ukranian armed forces? well, in general, the international legion is part of the armed force and it goes up, plays back into these war crime. circled war time, crunch, tries to russians are conducting now. so the part of the ukraine army, the legion is and it's composed of several battalions in the case the russians.
9:13 am
they were incorporated formally, the kind of new ski. but time we'll call incorporated formally in march into the credit army and they're not recruiting another battalion. the pony battalion so that they're very integrated part of the you credit on forces that part of the army . they are integrated as you say. now they are serving in the ukranian army to the members of this bill. are rusty in unit have designs on possibly undermining the regime back? i mean, beller is well just understand it. their motto is 1st grade that bellis, which would perhaps provide an answer to that. but the political background, i think, i think that this should be well understood in balance is rather different from other, some other forms of the state. so any different russia it is, it is going to heavily independent minded opposition. and as we saw last year, that opposition is very strong. and consequently beller bella poll show is quite supportive, but very supportive,
9:14 am
actually ukraine. and we've seen sabotage and southern valerie. so that's the political background to the, to the, to the beller bella risk regimen. it now is a 2 battalions. so the answer is yes, their objective is over throw look at shanker and what do we know exactly about how the fighters have been deployed in ukraine? not too much. the ukraine is quite understandably, very cage about pretty much everything they do. and that's right. but as far as we know, as young phillips at the foreign fighters are in general somewhere between i think probably around $20000.00. that's the best number. whether all of those are as was hinted, effective combat troops is slightly different things under maybe in the rear and got to, to, to still are useful. but it seems that they're deployed largely as light infantry and recognizance troops or not. they don't have artillery or tanks or anything like that, as far as we know. that's our military analyst, frank lead. we'd frank,
9:15 am
it's been great to talk to. thank you very much. thank you. janet can, let's get a round up now of some of the other headlines making use today. germany, the united kingdom and france have urged iran to stop what they called a nuclear escalation and quickly move towards reviving the 2015 nuclear records. the joint statement came after the un atomic energy watchdog accused iran, or removing 27 security cameras that monitored its nuclear program. the un wants to move could be a fatal blow to the dealership, and i said, i have to be with you as president joe biden. and his brazilian count about jaya ball so narrow, have agreed to work together to prevent further destruction of the amazon rainforest. the 2 leaders held talks at the some of the summit of the americas taking place in los angeles. addressing the delegates, president biden said, leaders of democracy is needed to work together society. at least 3 people have

been killed after a shooting in the u. s. date of maryland police side, the suspect open fire at a manufacturing facility before fleeing the scene. the incident comes as you waste lawmakers can see that new gun safety measures in the wake of recent mass shootings in washington, the congressional committee investigating last year's january seeks attack on the u . s. capital, as accused to former president donald trump, of trying to derail democracy. it was presenting its findings after a year of collecting evidence. the chairman of the panel explained that the attack was on the capital was not just a protest that got out of hand, but an orchestrated attempt to prevent the transition of power to incoming president joe biden. ah grim footage of violence and kills that in god, the u. s. capital some of it never before seen these were among

a mass of evidence presented by the u. s. how select comedy investigating the general 6 attack in its very 1st public hearing that president trump's call to george january 6, was the culmination of an attempted cou. a brazen attempt as one right to put it shortly after january 6 to overthrow the government. the violence was no accident, it represent senate prompts less than most desperate chance to haul the transfer of power, the vice for the hearing presented accounts of some of the top officials in the trump white house. i told the president no uncertain terms of that. i did not see evidence of fraud and that would have affected the outcome of the election. and frankly, a year and a half later, i haven't seen anything to change my mind on that active about the former

president's daughter. and it also does divide about the fraud claims. i respect attorney general bar. so a accepted what he sent was and she, capital police officer, caroline edwards, one of the 2 in bosom witnesses, no recounted her harrowing memories from that day or on the penalty of perjury. i couldn't believe my eyes. there were officers on the ground and you know, they were bleeding, they were throwing up. they were, you know, they had, i mean i saw friends with blood all over their faces. i was slipping in people's blood. madi diaz are expected to emerge in the following sessions as the committee lays out it's case against drum okay, let's get more on this 1st round of life hearings with d, w report and u. s. political analysts,
9:19 am
william glue. croft william. hi. what are some of your key takeaways from, from these televised hearings yesterday? well, for me, jared, it was that this was really all about trump trying to pin this attack on january 6th as not just some random collection of angry or disaffected or anti establishment people. but really a coordinate efforts starting with trump to overturn a fair and free election where there were no actual facts to show that there was fraud as trump was pushing. so this was what they were really trying to, to frame all of the evidence as leading back to trump. police presumably in the hopes of either politically damaging him. so he is no longer a threat in 2024 and his allies in 2022 or even legally speaking other may be able to pin our actual charges against him. and the other thing of course was that we heard from many of his advisors and supporters saying how they were china. we try to stop them from doing this, trying to get the call off the mob. of course, what i find very interesting is that that was all happening great privately at the
9:20 am
time they were all publicly speaking, many of his advisors, his family members were all stalwart supporters of donald trump publicly. but privately they were saying a very different thing. you're talking about the, the attempt to pin things on donald trump, given the better by patterns bipartisanship. what elsa democrats hoping to accomplish here, i would say, there are 2 tracks that democrats are going, or one is of course, political. the mid term elections are in november, history is not on the democrat side. usually the party that has the white house. if they also have congress, they lose seats in that mid term election. so history is not on their side. they have razor thin margins. they're trying to remind people what's at stake, trying to, if they can't commit republican voters at least to drive more of their democratic voters, to the polls in november to come out for them. so that's the political side of things. there's also of course, the legal side, while the, the, the house of representatives and this committee don't of course have the ability to charge anybody. they're not the judiciary, they're not the,
9:21 am
not the chet department of justice. they are collecting evidence. all everything we're seeing is evidence that could potentially be used in criminal actions in cases against donald trump. his advisors, and many the people are actually on the ground there on january 6th. so those are kind of the 2 political legal where these will actually go, that we're going to see over the weeks and months to come leading up the midterms that went in in november. gotcha. so lots and lots of evidence. how does this committee's work fit into the patchwork of investigations that are already underway against those involved and what happened in general, it is really a dizzying picture of what's happening here because you have this put basically a political investigation being led mostly by democrats to republicans in the house, what we've seen this, this committee, but there are a number of cases i'm going against. donald trump, against his businesses, against his family members. you have both criminal and civil cases against the trump organization in manhattan and in the state of new york. you have georgia,
9:22 am
prosecutors looking into election fraud and the effort to overturn the results in georgia. you have, of course, the criminal side of the january 6. you have the largest investigation in american history. having made hundreds, an almost a 1000 arrests, made hundreds of charges. hundreds of guilty please against the people are actually on the ground there including sedition charges, which is a very rare and very difficult charge to actually prove against members of people like the oath keepers and the proud boys he's far right groups. you have investigations against the moral lago accusations of classified information. being li are being improperly used at trumps resort. you also have a west chester golf club of him. so there's a, a large array of civil and legal and political action being used against donald trump. none of this has stuck so far and we'll have to see if anything will going forward. we certainly will certainly a lot going on that. so d, w reporter and us politics. analysts, william, good croft, william,
