the 2 britons and one moroccan were convicted of being mercenaries after a trial that lasted just 3 days. the u. k has slammed the ruling as a sham saying the geneva convention prohibits the prosecution of prisoners of war. but with russia opening over a 1000 investigations into other captured soldiers, they're unlikely to be the last to face trial or even death. d w, corresponded yon phillip shots is in keith earlier i spoke to him about the sentencing of these 3 foreign fighters. but 1st we talked about the latest on the fighting in the don bass region. battles over the key cities of silverado, nets, and bliss it shuns are continue and bay continue with all fours and even with fir, renewed st. battles. ukrainian authorities say they still controlled parts of those cities, especially also parts of civil bennett's and everything else. all the reports by the russian side that they've taken over settled on that's pure propaganda. but the

days. what's been the reaction to the east where you are all the people we have talked to officials and ordinary citizens on the street. they condemn a sentence and fe, speak about a pure show trial ukrainians. officials stress that this sentence as of absolutely no legal significance because only ukrainian courts can take decisions on ukrainian territory. and ukraine also says those fighters are part of the ukrainian military. and as such, they deserve the treatment or treatment according to international conventions. regarding the treatment of prisoners of war, the ukrainian government stresses they do everything that is possible to make sure
10:07 am
that those are prisoners can be released. now yon phillip ukrainian president lensky did invite foreigners to come and fight when the war started. do we know how significant of a role they're playing and how many there are? it's difficult to say because there's very little official information about it, but i would say they are quite so significant. there are even reports that they a play a role in the current fighting and several dannetta. i think it's difficult to generalize their importance because there are many different types of fighters. there are a lot of highly trained a soldiers, but they're also some not so well it's rain. so adventure has at least in the beginning, there were some not so well trained, adventurous, but a lot of them were not accepted and they had to leave the country. so at the moments that probably a few thousands of foreign fighters in the ukrainian military,

that's our correspondent in key of yon phillip shelves. john phillips, thank you. now the sentencing. all of those 3 man is certain to raise concerns for the fight of other captured foreign fighters. as early as february, the 27th ukraine announced the formation of a foreign legion. many of those who enlisted came from neighboring bella roost. they now see ukraine as their only means of fighting vladimir putin's growing influence in the region. he is more now from d. w correspondent mathias bowling. there are no bullets to day, but soon these men will be fighting for their future against the russian army in this south and east. they are serving in the ukrainian army, but they're all from bellows chosen with them. living with a lexi joined up 8 years ago after that. my dad protests when the conflict in the east start graham and ukraine is one of the last 3 countries of the former soviet

now is to do everything possible arsenal, to destroy lucas sion, catherine schumacher version will russian checkmark with tray booth. newton. the idea is that the beller russian, regina is so closely tied to russia that a defeat for pu gin would also be a defeat valko shanker. but that if at least fighters, the war in ukraine is also about the future of their country. and they can't go home until things change. i mean, it took, i put a job with them at the least a lifelong imprisonment would await me. there are the worst boyish execution law. the thought that they could pin extremism on me for taking part in the protests. in 2020, and on top of that now that charge me as a mercenary for taking part in the war. your wife wasn't. alexi was injured during the 2nd week of the war, wasn't a reconnaissance mission in butcher you mind when a shell blew away his leg. for now he trains new recruits waiting for

10:12 am
veterans. of course we already spoken about we'll talk about soon. got the george and then another very significant group on the check trans bizarrely due to chechen battalions on the russian side. they to been trying, trying hard to get other nationalities in maybe through the means of mercenaries, the credit report. they killed about 15 syrians down in dog bass a couple of months ago, but they've obviously failed to get how they need that. but on the credit side, yet there's quite a significant involvement of international groups. how close are the formal ties between this bill arrested melissa group and the ukranian armed forces? well, the generally international legion is part of the armed force and it goes up, plays back into these war crime. circled war time, crunch, tries to russians are conducting now. so the part of the ukrainian army, the legion is and is composed of several battalions in the case the russians. they were incorporated formally, the color blue sky, but time incorporated formally in march into the credit army and they're not recruiting another battalion. the pony battalion. so that they're very integrated
10:13 am
part of the you credit on forces that part of the army. they are integrated as you say. now they are serving in the ukranian army to the members of this bill. a routine unit have designs on possibly undermining the regime back. i mean, beller is well, john, as i understand it, their motto is 1st grade, then belarus, which would perhaps provide an answer to that. but the political background, i think, i think that this should be well understood in better says all the different from other, some other forms of the state. so any different than russia it is, it is going to heavily independent minded opposition. and as we saw last year, that opposition is very strong. and consequently beller bella poll show is quite supportive, but very supportive actually of ukraine. and we've seen sabotage and southern valerie, and that's the political background to the, to the, to the beller bella risk regimen. it now is a 2 battalions. so the answer is yes,
10:14 am
their objective is over throw lucas shanker. and what do we know exactly about how the fighters have been deployed in ukraine? not too much the ukrainians, quite understandably, very cage about pretty much everything they do. and that's right. but as far as we know, as young philip said, the foreign fighters are in general somewhere between i think probably around $20000.00. that's the best number. whether all of those are as was hinted, effective combat troops is a slightly different thing. something maybe in the rear guard. you 2 still are useful, but it seems that they're deployed largely as light infantry and recognizance troops are not there. and how about hillary or tanks or anything like that? as far as we know that some military analyst, frank led with frank. it's been great to talk to. thank you very much. thank you. janet can, let's get a quick round up now of some of the other headlines making will use to day germany,

. i told the president no uncertain terms as i did not see evidence of fraud and that would have affected the outcome of the election. and frankly, a year and a half later, i haven't seen anything to change my mind on that active about the former president's daughter. and it also does divide about the fraud claims. i respect attorney general bar. so a accepted what he sent was saying to share the capitol police officer, katelyn edwards, one of the 2 in bozeman witnesses no recounted her harrowing memories from that day or on the penalty of perjury. i couldn't believe my eyes. there were officers on the ground and you know, they were bleeding, they were throwing up. they were, you know, they had,

i mean i saw friends with blood all over their faces. i was slipping in people's blood. madi diaz are expected to emerge in the following sessions as the committee lays out its case against from let's get more on this 1st round of life hearings with d, w report and u. s. political analysts. william glue. croft william. hi. what are some of your key takeaways from, from these televised hearings yesterday? well, for me, jared, it was that this was really all about trump trying to pin this attack on january 6th as not just some random collection of angry or disaffected or anti establishment people. but really a coordinate efforts starting with trump to overturn a fair and free election where there were no actual facts to show that there was fraud as trump was pushing. so this was what they were really trying to, to frame all of the evidence as leading back to trump. police presumably in the hopes of either politically damaging him. so he is no longer a threatened 2024,
10:19 am
and his allies in 2022 or even legally speaking of him being able to pin actual charges against him. and the other thing of course was that we heard from many of his advisors and supporters saying how they were china. we try to stop them from doing this, trying to get the call off the mob. of course, what i find very interesting is that that was all happening very privately at the time. they were all publicly speaking. many of his advisors, his family members were all stalwart supporters of donald trump publicly. but privately they're saying a very different thing. what you're talking about, the attempts to pin things on donald trump given the bitter by patterns bipartisanship. what elsa democrats hoping to accomplish here, i would say, there are 2 tracks that democrats are going, or one is of course, political. the mid term elections are in november, history is not on the democrat side. usually the party that has the white house. if they also have congress, they lose seats in that mid term election. so history is not on their side. they have razor thin margins. they're trying to remind people what's at stake,
10:20 am
trying to, if they can't, commits republican voters at least to drive more of their democratic voters, to the polls in member to come out for them. so that's the political side of things . there's also of course, the legal side, while the house of representatives and this committee don't of course have the ability to charge anybody. they're not the judiciary, they're not the, they're not the department of justice. they are collecting evidence. all everything we're seeing is evidence that could potentially be used in criminal actions in cases against donald trump. his advisors and many of the people are actually on the ground there on january 6th. so those are kind of the 2 political legal where these will actually go, that we're going to see over the weeks and months to come leading up to the midterms that went in in november. gotcha. so lots and lots of evidence. how does this committee's work fit into the patchwork of investigations that are already underway against those involved and what happened in general, it is really a dizzying picture of what's happening or because you have this put basically
10:21 am
a political investigation being led mostly by democrats to republicans in the house, what we've seen this, this committee, but there are a number of cases i'm going against. donald trump, against his businesses, against his family members. you have both criminal and civil cases against the trump organization in manhattan and in the state of new york. you have georgia, prosecutors looking into election fraud and the effort to overturn the results in georgia. you have, of course, the criminal side of the january 6. you have the largest investigation in american history. having made hundreds, an almost a 1000 arrests, made hundreds of charges. hundreds of guilty please against the people are actually on the ground there including sedition charges, which is a very rare and very difficult charge to actually prove against members of people like the oath keepers and the proud boys he's far right groups. you have investigations against the moral lago accusations of classified information, being lee being improperly used at trumps resort. you also have
10:22 am
a west chester golf club of him. so there's a, a large array of civil and legal political action being used against donald trump. and none of this has stuck so far, and we'll have to see if anything will going forward. we certainly will certainly a lot going on that. so d, w reporter and us politics analysts, william, gwyn croft. william, thank you. let's go to thailand now, which is become the 1st country in asia to legalize the growing and possession of marijuana. although smoking it in public is still banned. grow as we'll have to register with the government. and when marijuana is offered in food or drink, its strength will have to be limited. i, there's plenty of public interest. and a triumphant 1st customer with options resembling a fast food menu. closely scrutinizing the product.

because people do not properly understand the use of cannabis. that's why they need to be educated on how to use kind of it and also the limitations because as we all know, it could cause more harm than benefit. there are also concerns about unwonted drug tourism that bangkok could become an asian amsterdam. others are less worried. i just think that she's got a lot more to offer than just made out to smoke. cannabis mother is a beautiful, beautiful part of the world. and so i don't think hannah's kind of his be legalized would make me come any more. so for better or worse, thailand's cannabis experiment is open for business. well, thanks. he is one of the world's most celebrated contemporary artist artists, and his unknown identity only adds to the ora. many of his installations are only temporary, so fans often have to move fast if they want to see the works for themselves. now,
