ah, i'm tommy or lady boy, it's good to have you with us. we began with a historic shift in europe, as you leaders approved, ukraine's been the 1st official step towards joining the european union. moldova was also granted candidate status of ukraine. this is a victory in the france, and italy had all back to ukraine's application. but all 27 member states needed to give it the go ahead. council building here in brussels, found their views reflected by the 27 european leaders meeting inside. all of them agreed to grant ukraine position was not unexpected. given the comments made by many leaders ahead of the meeting, that we will again show solidarity with ukraine. official perspective though,

craner tougher. germany's chancellor schultz along with 2 other powerful you leaders, italy's mario drag where they endorsed ukraine's u membership bid. others have been more skeptical, however, due to issues linked to corruption and the rule of law. but the war where granting can the same as possible. and of course, given the geopolitical situation since the end of a very horrible and off, let's say the situation in which we discussed it. clear ukraine will have to fulfill a long list of criteria before being able to enter the union. the step as a sign the country belongs to the european family. even during such a brutal war ukraine, democratic institution of the europeans, that is yet you leaders still have to decide whether expansion is possible any time soon. many here and brussels stage. and believe the war rating on its doorstep,

make this even more urgent. for more, i am now joy. i christine, and what can we make of this decision? tell me the importance of this decision for ukraine cannot be overstated. 2004, it followed up at a later in 2013 and 14. and it's taken the invasion by russia for ukraine to finally be what this means for the ukrainians. fighting on the front lines, you could imagine what this means for the ukrainians, who are refugees, a neighboring countries looking on as the enemy advanced, boost for the e. u leadership here in brussels. this was important at a time where they're struggling for that unity, especially when it comes to punishing moscow with more sanctions. as francis president emanuel cron saying this is sending a message to russia that, that ukraine is being pulled into the western fold. so as to say, taking it away out of post possible membership or in the future. what exactly will

change for ukraine at the moment, going forward after this, your decision here take decades and that's because loads of reforms are required. these are deep structural reforms that span policy and, and, and, and in the productivity can be made. and in that regard, what this is, is cave, essentially being put on the road to brussels. it might not get, they eventually build european union that we are willing to let you into the club. and christine, ukraine now joins a group of other countries were, are yet these western balkan states. you tell us more about what's been happening with them. tell me you've got to think about a country like north macedonia, macedonia had to take a name, change, changing the name of the country so as to make the process easier at these countries. the leaders of these are countries at north macedonian, others widens at why the process is taking so long. of course you have to know
1:05 am
there's 2 sides to every story. but you've heard, for example, the german chancellor, making the concession that at the ease you needed to make long as macedonia, as well as others. we now heard from the european council president shall michelle, that there was a willingness among the use members of the game. but as far as this summit goes, they walked away with nothing more than a promise. tell me to leave it there for 9, christine won't let us take a quick look at some of the stories making headlines of this. our journalism russian president vladimir putin says he is rerouting trade and wake of western sanctions over ukraine. the announcement was major in an online meeting of the leaders of brazil, russia, india, china, and south africa. russia completely suspended operations there 3 months ago in response to moscow's invasion of ukraine, of a big western bronze like mcdonalds and google ha canister. and after wednesday's deadly earthquake, countries,

taliban rulers have been internationally isolated since taking power, which is hampered relief efforts more than the u. s. supreme court issued an unexpected ruling on guns, saying americans have a constitutional rights to case of, of americans to bear arms. ah, the conservative majority of the supreme court struck this ruling. now let's have a look at the state juvenile right to carry firearms in public. this was the landmark ruling by the u. s. supreme court. it's 1st major decision on gun control in over york provided licenses to carry concealed firearms. applicants in new york had to prove a special need for self protection to carry a concealed gun roof on the state. it rolled that because americans have a constitutional rights to carry guns and public states must justified denying a permit relations. it said authorities can still restrict permit based on

objective factors such as age and training. rob for the plaintiffs who brought the case forward. the ruling or gun owner of new york state is no longer going to be persecuted by laws that i have nothing to do with the safety of the people and disagree, fearing it could undermine similar restrictions. in other states. the governor of new york called the ruling a dark day and warned that it could, has stepped away the state of new york's right and responsibility to protect its citizens. this decision isn't just reckless. it's reprehensible from mass shootings involved a texas and buffalo, new york. in the wake of these killings, the u. s. senate is seeking to pass a bipartisan bill on, has forced a rethink of safety measures across the country, making tackling gun violence and increasingly complicated task of texas college of law in houston. good to have you on the program. now. what does this ruling mean
1:08 am
for the fights on guns in public? well, it makes it more complicated. the this specific case, it's already basically allow i'm carrying firearms in public and in a way that would fit with the supreme court's ruling type of reasoning they use. so for over a decade, all the federal courts have been using something, lawyers called intermediate scrutiny, or a 2 step legal analysis. the court today said that they were all the courts to stop doing that. the supreme court said that we need to move from now on is we need to look at the state at the time of the countries founding. and so that's going to, it could be applied to a wide range of different lot actions, but it does complicate things, right?
1:09 am
because you're referring to the 2nd amendment, which gives americans the right the right to bear arms. but now the bas oh, there's really no higher court where we can challenge this ruling. we will have to wait a decade justice. but the supreme court justices in our country have life tenure. they get to stay there as long as they want. and so it takes a lot, right, and just so looking at this, do you then what, what does this then mean for all the sort of legal challenges across the country? because a lot of different places, the sort of non control control. so in some ways, the restriction won't affect some of our restrictions. for example, undocumented immigrants or things like that. and the court, it says that they left that those in place or a certain safe places like squiggly said, right in the opinion that those are fine. those types of rules are fine,
1:10 am
but there's a number of other types of restrictions like age requirements for about guns. it can be sold. that now there's a lot of uncertainty about what courts will do and they're going to have to employ a new legal methodology or a new true stevenson professor of law at south texas college of law in houston. thank you. you're welcome. thank you for having me and been leaders of approve ukraine's bit of a candidate status. the 1st official step towards joining the e u. moldova was also formally accepted as a candidate i pro valley and the business is up next. don't go away. if there's more on our website up until the article, thanks for joining us.
