4:01 pm
invasion that we crate. also in the show explosions, rock, the ukrainian capital in the 1st a parent russian attack on here in nearly 3 weeks to cities, mayor says the blast shook a historic central district, and a residential complex was on fire. we'll have the latest from our correspondent ah, a marion evans, dean. it's good to have you with us. russia's war against ukraine is said to dominate the agenda as leaders of 7 leading industrialized democracies meet in southern germany. german chancellor, all of sholtes is hosting this year's g 7 summit before its officials. doroty held bilateral talks with us president joe biden. the meeting of the world to 7 richest nations is focused on how to maintain unity in the face of russia, russian,
4:02 pm
and how to keep up support for ukraine over the longer term. other issues such as energy security and climate change are also and the agenda. russia was, was part of the group, then known as the g 8, but it was expelled after it invaded an annex ukraine's crimea region back in 2014 . today's meeting is set to be a display of unity and resolve against russia as the u. s. and german leaders underlined, and we have a common jones with emotional messages with no small port
4:03 pm
because we're joined now by the w. brussels beer chief alexander phenomena who is at the g 7 summit venue in the bavarian alps. and here with me and the students, thomas ferro to w political correspondent, welcome to both of you, alexandra. i'd like to begin with you. we know that germany has been criticized for not doing enough to support where she is, alexandra, that germany has not been criticized for not doing enough to support ukraine. but so today we heard the u. s. president, calling germany one of the fastest and closest allies in the world, very warm boards fair. what do you make of it? well, the meeting was apparently very friendly and very warm. and that is how it's being described by the u. s. administration by you asked officials, they're saying that you as president not only praise the german chancellor's leadership, but he also expressed his trust in olive shoals. and they also stressed that there
4:04 pm
was brought alignment on all of the issues that they discussed. and of course, we have to say that germany is one of the closest u. s. allies. despite all the criticism that the german government has been facing for, not supporting ukraine enough for not being quick enough and determined enough to provide the country with lethal weapons. so we can say that this was a very friendly meeting because of course also you asked, understands that germany is a heavy weight in europe, dad to together with friends. they can really move things and they also understand that germany as a host of this g 7 meeting is key to make sure that this meeting is at success. which is mentioned again that this bilateral meeting was before the official start of the g 7 summit. thomas did a speak about anything else of more substance?
4:05 pm
well, that is substance already. alexandra mentioned already some of the key aspects that they discussed according to u. s. officials. it was really all about showing this friendly relationship that they have one issue that they did not talk extensively about. and that again is, according to us, officials was this proposal that has been brought to the table to maybe put a price cap on russian oil. there were officials stressing that that was not something that was extensively discussed by both leaders. this is something that more likely will be discussed by the so called sherpa so basically, the negotiators from each country that behind the scenes as are trying to ng all the different opinions and positions to the table in as a, as a way of getting afterwards that final communicate or that final document. so it, that is particularly important because it is really one of the concrete aspects as being discussed in advance where there will be a prize cup on russian oil where there will be sanctions on russian gold. but it
4:06 pm
was all this meeting, this initial meeting about that friendly relationship between germany and they knighted states about those commonalities when it comes to dealing with the war in ukraine. well, just a short time ago or the german chancellor made a statement where he talked about the importance of the unity of the g 7 and other western alliances. let's have a listen and then we can continue our conversation. steve stanton, dig izzy. marquee 7 nations have stood together from the start, as have the european union and nato, in supporting ukraine against the brutal russian invasion. muffin on putin certainly did not expect that. and it's proving a big headache for him, and not cops. not that i not only the unwavering international support for ukraine, but also the courage of the people in defending their homeland on the claim. number, the full title missile attacks on housing in cave demonstrate, once again,
4:07 pm
the brutality of the war putin is waging. oh, for jose, kia, it's absolutely right that we stand united, and that the people of ukraine defend their country, that democracy and their freedom of self determination. this morning i spoke in detail with president biden. we are agreed in our estimation of what needs to be done, and what we can say is this. them, i'm sure, so with the germany and the u. s. will always work together to ensure the security of ukraine was. emma, it's been that way from the beginning as you and we'll stay that way when i'm 400 of good we reaffirm this joint approach and close coordination coordinates on all of my noise physicians. well, this of course is the 1st time that all of schoultz is hosting the g 7 summit. as chancellor thomas, do you think this is gonna help give him a kind of a boost, especially in the wake of all the criticism that he's faced. it essentially depends
4:08 pm
on what results he manages to get out of out of this g 7 when it comes to tackling some of those very important issues related to the war in ukraine, food security, inflation, high prices, also more commitment towards ukraine not only politically, but also militarily, those kinds of issues. so we'll have to look at the end. what results are actually there to see whether it could give or love shows a boost or we can say now for sure, is that for allah shows his government, this summit is extremely important. it only comes after a few months since he took power. he's been in power since december. and as such, it is for him. an important show to kline understand whether or by this show, whether he has enough clout, enough influence on the international stage and only to bring all these leaders together. but also to make sure that there are some concrete results that in this particular case, helped to reduce the impact of the war in ukraine. so the actual effects will have to see after we know what concrete results come out of those very important
4:09 pm
negotiations. well, even just in that short exert that we heard of the chancellor speaking, he keeps talking about unity and indeed are we? here are many western leaders continuously talk about unity in the face of russia's aggression. alexander, i'm wondering though, despite all of this talk of unity, are there any concrete joint plans to actually increase the pressure on the kremlin moving forward? well, i think we really have to be fair and say that. so whether we talk about the g 7 leader is near to the european union, the half state remarkable unites hurts when it comes to russia's war on ukraine and to making sure that flooding food and under standstill costs are rising . however, of course, as journalists, we are paying very close attention, we are keeping a close eye on matters a word. there are differences, word is some of the unity is fading. so it will be interesting to see whether we
4:10 pm
are going to see some concrete measures announced here on the agenda, our additional sanctions on russia with you as together with the u. k, canada and japan saying they are ready to impose a ban on russian gold imports. the european union is saying they are considering this, but maybe day it will not be ready to follow. so we will see whether we will have an announcement on that here. while we're now looking at the war in ukraine entering its 5th month and the challenge of chorus, maybe. is that with a enthusiasm for support for ukraine initially? how much longer will it continue? thomas? i'm wondering how do you at we're g 7 countries intend to maintain this coalition of support for ukraine over the longer term will bit is one way to which thirdly, starting to do that at the understanding that the warden ukraine has gone for much longer than many expected and that that support still needs to continue. and there
4:11 pm
are ways in which that support can continue. and only politically we saw an important measure only a few days ago when ukraine was granted, officially that status of an e u candidate. but also, militarily, something that we've also heard was discussed between germany and the u. s. and that bilateral meeting between both leaders. so what other military equipment ukraine might need. then there's the, obviously the issue on how to continue to reject what russia is doing in ukraine. so it'll be a lot about political statements on the one hand, which we've seen today, which we will continue to see in the next few days, paired with concrete measures that could help ukraine reach its goal that could be through military equipment, through aid to political support other measures as well, being discussed, so all in all, it's a mixture between those political statements and actions that will ultimately have an effect on the ground. with so much focus on the war in ukraine. are we just
4:12 pm
going to see the other important issues, the global issues affecting the world be completely neglected at the summit? alexander will the g 7 leaders even have any time to talk about anything else? well, they will talk about climate change. it was supposed to be at the top of the agenda before the war and ukraine started. and now of course, the, the leaders are more focusing on the economic consequences. this war is having on the global economy with soaring energy prices rising inflation. and of course, the question, what needs to be done of for the western world to be lest, and especially for the european union to be less dependent on russian energy supplies. and of course, this is a huge task for the g 7 commitments on climates above we are hearing from the you. as administration, there are saying that there will be no watering down all for oh, climate commitments and the german chancellor has also made at one of the
4:13 pm
priorities of this g 7 meeting to speak about climate change and to make sure that other countries in africa, asia and latin america are also included for coordinated efforts to tackle climate change. the w brussels bureau chief alexander phenomena who is reporting from the g 7 summit in southern germany and thomas farrell. political correspondent, thank you so much to both of you for all of your insights. well, while the g 7 liter is need for a talk said al castle, anti g 7 protest are taking place on the streets of a town nearby. demonstrators are and demanding swift action on climate change and, and, and to the use of fossil fuels. they're also groups calling and wealthy nations to tackle global poverty and inequality with russia's war and ukraine. dominating the
4:14 pm
talks, demonstrators are marching for peace and cost to military spending. on the w correspondent, benjamin of ours gruber is at a demonstration near the summit venue and he joins us now for more benjamin hello to you. so we were hearing ahead of the some of the warnings by police that there would be tens of thousands of anti g 7 protesters and that those demonstrations could turn violent. what are you seeing at the demonstration where you are there? definitely not tens of thousands. you can see them here walking right behind me. there has been a massive police presence here because police does not want to take any risk. there have been a few turns moment with police officers putting on the helmet. but it's been a massive security, massive police presence more than $80000.00 police officers our own duty around
4:15 pm
darmesh wanted controlling everyone who wants to come to this barbarian town close to the elmo castlewood to 7. some it is now taking place for just a few turns moments, a lot of movement as they also have gathered in a walking around damaged packaging. but no, no sign of it disrupts the widow, forties, and police. if you're in the beginning and now we just saw some of the protesters marching behind you, they were holding up all kinds of colorful banners and waving flags. so who exactly are the people taking part in these protests and what are they demanding? there are several little groups demanding on one side more action by g 7 leaders. when it comes to poverty, when it comes to hunger. when it comes, tackling global challenges, saying that the club, this g 7 club is not doing enough. many of them are saying that imperialistic forces from west and east how they call it.
