a closed door session via video link ukraine's president asked were leaders to help and the war before winter, when conditions would become tougher for his troops. the other to some of the physicians that do, we all have assured that we will continue to support ukraine in his defense against russia. lies what's clear as that war is a deep, deep cut in international relations. a little ego of all the rules, all the agreements that we have made with each other the other by the cooperation of states, all has been broken run by functions, especially the understanding that borders should not be moved by force to skim. finished with your vote for sure of himself. his conclusion that the one, the g 7 is considering capping russian oil prices and imposing sanctions on gold exports. as a way to further target vladimir putin revenue streams, while minimizing spillover affects, the war is already driving up food and fuel prices around the world,

as well as inflation rates. several developing economies have been invited to take part in this year's summit to winning working groups focused on energy and food security. here in the studio with me is d w as she political correspond, melinda crane. i am covering g 7, a bench at the summit itself. i nearby gosh, pa, concurrent, but very of, for us, is the w's, brussels beer chief, alexandra con. nomine. good to have you both with us. we're going to be going through the summit. hopefully we'll get some uh, live pictures there from the final conferences, kronos from at the summit was start with you alexander of final statements from g. 7 leaders will be made shortly. the declaration was just released. what's the bank take away from this summit? well, i think indeed that that be can take away from this summit, is that the g 7 leaders remains united. not only when it comes to des, support for ukraine and condemnation of russia's brutal war there. but also when it
12:04 pm
comes to the pressing issues that we're on the agenda with regards to the state of the global economy. even though we know that they were different proposals on the table with some countries pushing for full bold measures, others being more restrained. we now have them all united and saying that they are ready to study price caps for instance, on russian oil and gas. and we know that the final communicate also mentions a ban on russian gold to be imports. they are going to pledge, as you just mentioned, 4500000000 u. s. dollars to address global hunger. they were also speaking about climate change, inviting other countries to join egg climate club. i'm sorry, this is quite loud here. i. i think you can hear it with helicopters, lending nearby. so i think that the big takeaway is that the leaders are united as
12:05 pm
you're speaking or alexander. i believe we were looking at some live pictures of the summer tears gathering. oh, i'm told her not 5. there's just some file pictures of the, of the leaders of the g 7 gathering at that summit, melinda crane, or political, she political correspond is with us. here in the studio, melinda, we just heard alexandra mentioned the possibility of, of putting a, a cap, a price cap on russian oil. that something that the g 7 leaders are aspiring to. they don't have a clear plan for that yet. but any idea how that supposed to work? yes, and it's complex, which is why we probably won't hear a definitive statement on exactly how this is to be done. but apparently they are quite close to agreeing on a cap. and the cap would have essentially 2 advantages. for the g 7 leaders. first of all, it would deny vladimir putin,
12:06 pm
the windfall profits has been getting because despite the fact that the west is trying to win itself off of russian fossil fuels, the prices of those fossil fuels have been so ring. and putin has been able to divert supplies from the west to china, india and other countries. therefore, he, in fact has more money in his war chest rather than less. so trying to put a cap on the russian oil price would clearly serve that aim of reducing the gains to him. but it would also be an attempt to try to bring these runaway fuel prices under control and also drivers of inflation under control. and as you know, those fuel prices are badly hurting, not simply the g 7 countries represented here, but also very much the global south, the most vulnerable in many countries, including those invited yesterday in the outreach session. are they seeing the poorest in those countries unable to pay for cooking oil and essentially facing
12:07 pm
a major hunger crisis? so that would be the aim. the mechanism is that they would seek to impose sanctions, apparently, on the main insurer for russian oil tankers. and that, that would then ensure that that company would be sanctioned unless it kept the price of them will be coming back to the sure. i'm sure, melinda, because it is, it's very important this mechanism how that cap on rational process is supposed to work and, and not everyone understands at this point. i'm not sure the, some of tiers have really worked it out themselves. but i wanted to ask you a question about the u. s. president joe biden. he's leaving the summit just as we speak. i understand his motorcade is just left the venue up. how was this summit for joe biden? this is a rather critical juncture for him in his presidency. he's got major domestic problems at the moment, but the, the world economy is also weighing on him and the u. s. economy, of course, the conflict to the war in ukraine that russia has his launch there. how has this
12:08 pm
worked out for jo biden's priorities at the summit? well, certainly he was intent upon delivering the message that alexander talked about a moment ago, namely that the west remains completely united. and you'll remember as the g 7 summit got underway, he stood in front of the cameras with chancellor schultz praised germany's work in dealing with the ukraine crisis. and also both sides said transatlantic unity has never in stronger the u. s. is absolutely at the forefront essentially of keeping keeping this together. now, that is an important message for joe biden, at home as well as abroad, but will it sure up domestic support in the u. s. probably not. what he needs to deliver is really concrete action to bring inflation down the fed, the federal reserve bank in the u. s. is working on that, but people really want to see see changes at the gas tank. they want to see changes
12:09 pm
when they, when they go grocery shopping and any weather, any thing that has been decided here in bavaria can really bring inflation down quickly. is a very, very open question. you were just looking at live pictures there of them, i believe is the motorcade of president joe biden leaving o leaving the venue again. i'm told they are not live pictures. they are just the pictures of jo biden's motorcade leaving the venue. but you can get a sense of just how large security is massive motorcade involved in putting all that together. let's go back to uh, to bavaria. we're alexander, phenomena standing by alexandra. this summit for joe biden was a, was significant, of course, as it was for all of the leaders there. but why is he leaving the summit early and not delivering a final statement as many of the others are? yes, and he was actually also expects to i was expected to deliver at
12:10 pm
a state men's a hat off stand working session today. however, dan d, u as administration has decided to leave earlier because they were concerned stepped weather conditions that are expected to get worse will prevent the u. s. president from traveling further on to their youth, nato summit in madrid. and, and that is why, of course, security is stab priority here. they decided that it is the right thing to do to leave earlier to be on time and madrid for the very important native summit there. thank you for now, melinda. thank you for now. we're going to move on to another pressing topic. as of course, we wait for the final news conference is going to be held in at the summit venue there in schloss. l mouth, of course, will be bringing that to you live. will g 7 leaders have condemned russia for
