9:00 pm
ah ah ah ah, this is dw news live from berlin to night in the south of ukraine in russian occupying the territory, missiles strikes by ukrainian forces. you crates, military says it hit a russian ammunition step up, killing dozens of soldiers. also coming up tonight. drones are playing and increasingly important role in this war will meet some of the ukrainian refugees
9:01 pm
building drones in latvia for the war effort and the dazzling 1st pictures from the most powerful space telescope ever watch. nasa and builds detailed images from the revolutionary james with telescope, which can peer through time itself, back to the dawn of the universe. ah, i break off is good to have you with us ukrainian forces and say they have launched a counter attack in the southern here. so an region in line with their plans to retake the territory from russia. keep says that they've destroyed in ammunitions dep her when killed more than 50 russian soldiers in an attack on the town of nova hope cut, which is held by russian. true state media in russia are giving
9:02 pm
a different account, claiming at least 7 people were killed elsewhere in ukraine, south, the city of mich alive was the target of moscow's strikes, medical facilities and residential buildings were hit, at least a dozen people were injured in bad attack. of a more now we want to cross over to d w's emanuel shars and she is in here so emanuel, what more can you tell us about these attacks? well, this attack is just a latest of a string of attacks that are, that actually fell upon a civilian buildings. you mentioned the 2 hospitals, one school, several residential buildings. this is only what happened today and it's something we've seen happening over and over the past 5 months of war, rush on me sized falling and civilian targets. this time on this particular attack, they were about a dozen people injured. nobody died. but those attacks on
9:03 pm
a daily basis are deadly. i'm talk, i'm thinking about the later, which is a deadly or so far in as as a piano. so in dennis, where did that still has an increase to over 40 and our 1st responders are still searching the rebel. we interest in that ukranian authorities are saying that russian shelves have struck yet another residential building in the southern city of nicola. now that would be just the latest in what appears to be a string of hits on civilians. i mean, is this a deliberate strategy that we're c well, grant, russia always says that it doesn't target civilians that he'd only house to t j target. dad being fed, it's been 5 months of war. there's an air red alerts every day, every night, all over ukraine and almost daily das civilians, facilities civilian buildings, which are being hit and where victims, unfortunately are you know,
9:04 pm
are under the rebels, the people, dozens of people have already died in such strike. so it seems at this stage of course, that if not deliberate, at least could careless you know, or at least in precise missile, or strike a full on ukraine on a daily basis. in your mind, when you do, the ukrainian government has been warning for weeks now of an impending counter offensive in the south of the country to push the russians out of that area. what does that tell us about the, the state of the russian military tonight, or the ukrainian military rub? well, you know, the thing is quite telling dot said the ukrainian armed forces warned the population that they have to leave their homes. it also shows where they're from, you know, there's a lot of russian ammunition they posed that have been targeted by ukraine and armed forces of late and often over the years, you know, pro,
9:05 pm
separatists or forces have been tapped as ammunition they posed in occupied areas. so a meet civilian, so this explains why civilians have to leave. but we have to keep in mind that even though those cities are, you know, have lost a massive amount of inhabitants, sometimes half of them sometimes 80 percent of them even there must have people left there still, people left behind. i'm thinking about the elderly. i'm thinking about people with disabilities are simply people who decided they will simply not leave their homes. did amuse, manual shows for us there in the ukrainian capital in one year. thank you. the united states serves it. it has intelligence that iran is preparing to deliver armed drones to the russian military. the u. s. serves, it's unclear whether any drawings have already been delivered, but that iran's ready to train russian troops on their use as early as this month.
9:06 pm
the kremlin has announced that president vladimir putin will visit iran next week with a smaller surveillance. drones are already used in the war in ukraine for our next report. d, w is killian buyer traveled to the laughing and capital reger and visited a drawn factory there that struggling to keep up with demand. ukrainian forces have come to rely on reconnaissance drones in their fight against the russian invasion. ah, a few weeks ago these ukrainian refugees did not know which way to turn a screwdriver. now they're building drones for the ukrainian army. atlas aerospace, the latvian company, they now work for saw an explosion and demand for military grade recognizance drones with the onset of the war in ukraine. previously was like i was happy to sell 10 drawn spell monson. now you, if you're talking about extra 100 fair pip, amazon if stuff to think him, if he's not enough and we need to sell to think how we're going to sell more. atlas
9:07 pm
builds drones that are small enough to be carried by one soldier. they are highly sought after by ukrainian special forces units equipped with these drones can cover large areas for reconnaissance and stream their video feeds back to base in real time in for read thermal imaging cameras turn night into day. atlas says tools like this help save soldiers lives and the ukrainians are buying so far more than 100. drones have already been delivered. the battleship has become a bit more transparent, maybe. and you have soldiers that are just more independent can act independently because they already have all the data and what's happening over the next shell are behind bad wall. this justice on ukraine's battlefields. consumer drones from china have had a starring role and propaganda video circulating on social media that the soldiers
9:08 pm
have been modifying these drones to drop bombs. i heard often to devastating effect. you have a bunch of yellow you, lumpkin there, but experts say using chinese may drones is potentially dangerous. this video allegedly shows an artillery strike honing in on a ukrainian drone operator. it's been claimed that d j i, the chinese firm producing these drones is passing on gio tracking information to the russian military. something the company denies. back in latvia, atlas aerospace is hiring more ukrainians to increase production. they are keen to help them on the line when they can drains for the ukrainian army. with the help of destroying, we shall win the war. war is a money maker for some. all of these green bags will be going to ukraine,
9:09 pm
and they won't be the last, on average, these drones only last for 48 hours in combat. and so the flow of equipment will continue. and we will have more coverage of the war in ukraine in its fall out leader in the show were further than the human eye has ever seen nasa to day released photos from the james web telescope showing the most detailed images of deep space ever seen. they were taken with the james web telescope, which is located 1500000 kilometers from earth. sciences, hurt to the images, will help them understand how the 1st stars and galaxies, the hydro car for molecular hydro form, mostly. and i'm joined now by stephanie milan planetary scientist at nasa's goddard space flight center in greenbelt, maryland. stephanie, it's good to see you be,
9:10 pm
you have to, you'd be thrilled. i would imagine with these images, what do they mean to you and your colleagues? this is an absolute, groundbreaking opportunity today to see the 1st images and what it means for the entire project. for the 10s of thousands of people that are been working on this mission for over 2 decades. it means that we finally got to the point where we're going to rewrite the textbook for astronomy astrophysics and planetary science. we are now beginning science with the james lab space telescope, usa rewrite the astronomy books of because we say the scientists are now making discoveries even with these new images that they were not even um, reckoning with. there are things that we have found in these images that we have not seen before in the karena nebula. we saw ours that are forming that we've never
9:11 pm
been able to resolve before in the dying star. we saw the eye nary for the 1st time at longer wavelengths. so we knew that this was a binary system. we'd actually never observe that star. and we're seeing more and more galaxies and we could possibly ever even imagine. and every single observation we do, it's almost like a, a contamination even in our images there. so many galaxies, it is absolutely astonishing what you can see with just a blink of an eye with a james web space. it is amazing. the clarity here. you almost have to think that these photos have been doctored because they are so clear. and when i compare these images to the images that we've seen from the hubble telescope, i mean it's like not in day, what makes these pictures so special. so, and these are very complimentary to what the hubble space telescope has done with the james web space telescope. that we're seeing at longer wavelengths we're seeing
9:12 pm
in the infrared. so it's almost like having night vision goggles for the universe. we get to see things that the hubble telescope can never see because of these wavelengths with the james web space telescope. we can see through gas and dust where stars are being born or the dust from dying stars, or even all the dust, the shrouds, galaxies, all these things. we can now hear inside of and really study in detail and extreme detail as you already said. and noticed in these images that we have never had the capability of doing at these wavelengths before and stiffly. when we look at these pictures, you know, this is just a, i mean it was described today by nasa as like a grain of sand on the end of your finger tip. what we're seeing here. so we're talking about count with stars, countless galaxies. what is the answer then when i pose the question to you tonight? are we alone?
9:13 pm
that's a wonderful question. and you know we are working diligently across multiple space agencies to, to survey the sky and details that we've never had the capability of doing before. the next generation telescopes are going to be built and designed both for space and the ground to search for you know, asteroids that are coming towards the earth, to search for new planets around other stars that may be in that, that habitable zone where they might have water on the surface, we are in a whole new realm of discovery space. and what we hope to do with the james web space telescope is maybe not look for life itself. but we are hoping to look for those planets around other stars that maybe look something like our own ers atmosphere. and that is when we start getting our short list of targets to do further studies and maybe even start seeing some other signals that might be indicative of, of some sort of biologic geologic or some other phenomenon are process happening on
9:14 pm
that planet. to suggest that it's really of interest. well, well maybe one day we will find out that there is more intelligent life out there than just what we know here on earth. stephanie milon, we appreciate your time and your insights tonight. congratulations. thank you so much for it. let's take a quick look now at some of the other stories that are making headlines around the world united through our values nurse. but i that this will not meet you as president obama has heal talks with his mexican counterpart under his manuel lopez over little at the white house. biden said, immigration was a common challenge and said his administration was creating legal pathways for migrate over door. recently skipped the summit of the americas to protest the exclusion of left this central american government. so the u. s. it says it has

killed the leader of the syrian branch of so called islamic state in a drone strike. ma, here al a gal was hit while riding a motorcycle near in donnie's in the north of syria. the syrian observatory for human rights. as confirmed al, a goth death, a wildfire in california yosemite national park is threatening to engulf its ancient sequoia trees. hundreds of firefighters have been trying to douse the flames from the ground and from the air. some of the gigantic trees are believed to be more than 2000 years old and are seen as one of the state's largest natural treasures. are you to japan now where the funeral of former prime minister sions obee has taken place in the capitol? tokyo thousands of mourners gathered outside the temple where a private service was held following the ceremony of a body travelled through the city passing important landmarks including the
9:16 pm
parliament building. the 67 year old was assassinated last friday, while making a speech in the city of nara, just days before. a parliamentary election journalist and sonia blush told us more about our base legacy from tokyo. i think for many people, especially the younger ones, he was all they knew he was the only prime minister they had seen in a long time. so he had a surprisingly big following among the younger people, i say surprising because his policies are very conservative. so he's been also rather do this is bigger and i think a lot of the more controversial things didn't actually get reported much outside of japan. so the image that people have outside of japan and inside of japan can be quite different. there were a lot of demonstrations and yeah, he's achieved some things, but others. yeah. he didn't really get that far. and as i said, that
9:17 pm
a lot of things that that now aren't being mentioned because of obviously the grief but shouldn't be forgotten and should be looked into. and there was journalist in sonya blash, go there, reporting from tokyo to lincoln's president is heading to a naval base to flee. the country after being blocked from a leaving by air that happened in colombo. go to by roger pox has promised to step down tomorrow that as civil unrest continues the country's political crisis is also hitting citizens at the fuel pump part with record high prices to conserve fuel. the government is asking people to work from home. it has closed schools and restaurants have even switch to cooking meals on wood fires for 7 days, as our mo dean has been waiting here in a kilometer long line for gas in sri lanka, capital colombo,
9:18 pm
he turned a new fuel delivery was coming. he spent day and night, he has since added that on the gas in there is simply no more fueling. we have no more gas at home to cook. we used to have an income, but for weeks now the money has stopped coming to one, every level. we can't go on like this. life is hard as the malware. to make matters worse, his wife is ill. he tries to spend a little time with her every day at lunch time, risking losing his place in line berlin. i keep calling him when he is there waiting. it's the tormenting thought that have made me think. i was even admitted to hospital. we didn't even have fuel for him to drive me there. no quarter it many people in sri lanka face similar problems. inflation is soaring, and prices are skyrocketing, even for essentials like food. hardly any one can afford to buy what they need.
9:19 pm
oh, reason blank. other people used to have 3 meals a day, most of the time. now it's either 2 or one. sometimes people are drinking water instead of eating. i know, you know, we don't know what to do, what to give our children. they say they're hungry, but we don't have anything for them. we don't want to move on that viagra molina, but we can't drink tea with milk anymore. we have no milk powder. we just about managed to buy rice, but even that is very expensive. another day has gone by in the line for gas and for as armoire dean, it's again been fruitless. his one hope that after the resignation of president go to buy a roger pizza, better times will finally come. yeah, madame, you got any of it only when we get problems like the fuel crisis solved, can we live a life worth living? i haven't lost faith yet that a new government will give us fresh hope and change will finally happen better than love wouldn't be allowing it dental. until then, as i am,
9:20 pm
will hunting low spend another night in line, hoping that he will finally get a few leeches if you will. the euro has hit parity with the us dollar a 1st in over 20 years. the exchange rate between the 2 currencies is now just one cent apart. euro has been particularly vulnerable due to the war in ukraine and rising gas prices. but today's fall, march, the weakest that the euro has been since 2001. and it is raising fears of a recession in europe, and a lot of our churches for people who are being paid for depending on where you are, i guess, here at the big table with me is christie presently w busy? so what exactly does the euro dollar parity mean for me in my wallet? ah, it depends. i mean the, you don't happen to run a tourism business. i think it is something else. i mean, if you are running
9:21 pm
a tour, them a company of some sort, right? now it actually could be a good thing for you in some way. i'm basically the euro is quite cheap right now and for international travel. travers coming from the u. s. for example, it's very cheap for them to come here and throw some of that cash around. so this, it would be a great moment for them to come here and spend some of that. but of course, that's not the case for you. that's not the case for most europeans here are what it means for us is the exact opposite traveling to the us will be more expensive, also ordering or buying things from the u. s. or that are somehow being imported from the u. s. are going to be more expensive. this applies for european businesses as well, more expensive for them. they're gonna have to pass them that costs on consumers. and as you know, inflation is already very high here in europe. so if we end up in kind of a vicious cycle where this is potentially gonna make the inflation worse, we're just going to hit the economy, which is going to make the euro even more weak, potentially, if nothing changes. we see the u. s. fed keeps raising interest rates there that makes the dollar more attractive and seen any movement yet by the european central
9:22 pm
banks of what does this mean for the euro's own? right, i mean it's kind of the same situation to set on a bit of a more macro scale. if your somebody who is exporting in some ways this might be really good for you because your goods are cheaper for american companies right now . so that could increase demand. people love a good deal, obviously, but are the inverse is true as well. importing stuff to, to europe is going to get more expensive and that that cost is gonna have to get passed on to businesses passed on to consumers. eventually, if prices keep going up like they haven't, as you said, the central bank here has not done a lot on prices. it could mean that people do eventually cut their spending. and this is obviously going to be a disaster for economic growth here. this is when we start carrying even louder voices talking about a recession here in the ursa, which is the last thing we need to hear that tied to what energy cause a war in ukraine. the list gets longer. christy, thank you. in ukraine authorities or warning that moscow
9:23 pm
is gearing up for a new push in the don't bass region, but it's not just the east of ukraine causing concern. ukraine's border with bell roofs is also seeing a troubling military build up western intelligence agency, se russian soldiers and weapons systems are ready and waiting in bel roost to open a new front against ukraine. something that would stretch keeps forces considerably . w. nick connelly went to the border region near shona. he is to see for himself here when you cranes bored with boilers, you never really alone will not, not show that drones. one of ours don't actually. it is but that's not a given. it was a russian truant attack from across the border, the start the war for these ukrainian po to got on february 24th. they tried to keep russian forces on the bellows side by blowing up the bridge. but the russians
9:24 pm
came all the same and stayed for nearly a month since the russians left in april. the shooting route here is lock you been restricted, direct sizes on both sides of the border. fair. now among many ukrainians, is that russia's exercises and bellows good. suddenly turn into real warfare just like they did in february. russian forces have never left belarus. instead, their so called exercises keep getting extended. ukrainian leaders long said their presence was just a distraction or a bluff rather than a real threat. but recently, russian troop numbers of the board have risen in the tone from belarus and leader alexander lucas shanker, has grown ever more aggressive. ukraine's actions are also speaking a different language. these images from the bell, russian government, apparently show ukrainian forces mining their side of the border in recent days. much of the 1000 kilometer frontier which in ukraine belarus was barely marked,
9:25 pm
let alone defended before this war. bucklin trips across the board of groceries to see a doctor or part of everyday life. and his lie or all that you ca, ruiz, to go to bella, ruth law and they would come to us before you die. all just got on somehow little the. i didn't even think a war like this with even possible. i showed me a holler. who knows what snack center, good to my. the war has taken its toll on many family ties. the span this border. ha ha, there's not many people here in the village have relatives, unadilla russian side, religion. some of them have stopped talking to each other because of the war. i believe ukraine will when eventually it has to. we can't afford to lose many locals. here. we've given up their jobs to try to make sure that holds true. what you, what on it? we have a security guard. we're g, a driver, shop assistance year, part of it and locksmiths. ah. unless he is lazara constantine's life changed
9:26 pm
overnight. he was called up. put in charge of dozens of men, the territorial defense force. his experience, some brief, military training university had never actually fought over me. she's fundamental to me in the the people and other places gotten, know what it feels like when in the line, bombs are falling. when your child is terrified of everything on our way of saw, you've shown up the club. well, most of us here have never even been in a filing until the war looked in little vineyard. and then when it starts with, you know, or if the enemy comes along, if you do what you need to do on the, will, the de without thinking twice in this one would assume new item yet must be here, might seem relaxed, domestic neighbors, even father and son serving side by side. the real sense of threat is never far away. caughtington tells us he's never yet had to call a family with news of a fatality. he doesn't sound sure, it'll stay that way. as a reminder,
9:27 pm
now of our top story, nasa has released the 1st pictures from the james web space telescope, including the deepest ever image of the known universe. so i to say the web telescope will help them better understand how the 1st stars and galaxies form. you watch the w news live from berlin up next it kick off with the review of the german boldness league of season. i'll be back at the top of the hour with more world news followed by the day i proceed with ah, with
