ah ah ah, this is dw news live in from berlin to night. the 1st pictures taking the human eye all the way back to the birth of the universe. nasa unveils detailed images from the james web telescope, which can peer through time itself. back to the dawn of the universe, also coming up to night in the south of ukraine in russia,

occupied territory missile strikes by ukrainian forces. ukraine's military says it hit a russian ammunitions depot, killing dozens of soldiers and drones are playing an increasingly important role in this war. tonight, we'll meet some of the ukrainian refugees building drones in latvia for the war f. ah, i bring gov to our viewers watching a p b s in the united states into all of you around the world. welcome scientists are calling it the dawn of a new era. in astronomy today, nasa unveiled the 1st images from the most powerful space telescope ever launched. the james web telescope is capable of gazing deeper into space and further back in time than any telescope in history. astronomers say james webb will shed new light
10:02 pm
on the origins of our universe and could even help answer mankind's eternal question. are we alone? the european space agency and nasa say the james web telescope has already changed our understanding of the universe? this chart shows the nebula created by a dying star expelling its mass in the near him at nasa. scientists say the intense detail never seen before, along with infrared shots when allow them to understand exactly what happens. a stars di miller, we thought in the birth of stones, is equally stunning. this is a nearby style forming region within our milky way. the image reveals hundreds of new stars that were previously hidden along with structures that scientists have yet to identify. web has homed in on galaxies, they're far away, that the light from them has taken billions of years to get to the telescope. and
10:03 pm
of this image shows galaxies that formed over 13000000000 years ago, nasir is encouraging people to download the images on their website and take a closer look. really zoom in and play around. there are galaxies here in which we're seeing individual clusters of stars forming, popping up, just like popcorn. another image shows how galaxies merged together. one of the fundamental principles of the universe that scientists are eager to learn about. yeah, the telescope also analyzed the atmosphere of a faraway gas planet and detected water vapor. this plan couldn't sustain life, but the james web telescope will be analyzing other planets that are more like earth and peering even deeper into the universe. nasa says it's a game changer. ready ready ready ready ready ready will stephanie milam is a planetary scientist at nasa's goddard space flight center in maryland,
10:04 pm
and i asked her what this latest release of images from nasa means for her and the wider scientific community. this is an absolute, groundbreaking opportunity today to see the 1st images and what it means for the entire project. for the 10s of thousands of people that been working on this mission for over 2 decades. it means that we finally got to the point where we're going to rewrite the textbook for astronomy astrophysics and planetary science. we are now beginning science with the james web space telescope. yeah, a usa rewrite the astronomy books are because we say the scientists are now making discoveries even with these new images, that they were not even a reckoning with. there are things that we have found in these images that we have not seen before in the karena nebula. we saw ours that are forming that we've never been able to resolve before in the dying star. we saw the eye nary for the
10:05 pm
1st time at longer wavelengths. so we knew that this was a binary system, but we'd actually never observe that star. and we're seeing more and more galaxies and we could possibly ever even imagine. and every single observation we do, it's almost like a contamination even in our images there. so many galaxies, it is absolutely astonishing what you can see with just a blink of an eye with a james web space. it is amazing. the clarity here. you almost have to think that these photos have been doctored because they are so clear. and when i compare these images to the images that we've seen from the hubble telescope, i mean it's like not in day, what makes these pictures so special. so, and these are very complimentary to what the hubble space telescope has done with the james web space telescope. that we're seeing at longer wavelengths we're seeing in the infrared. so it's almost like having night vision goggles for the universe.
10:06 pm
we get to see things that the hubble telescope can never see because of these wavelengths with the james web space telescope. we can see through gas and dust where stars are being born or the dust from dying stars, or even all the dust, the shrouds, galaxies, all these things. we can now hear inside of and really study in detail and extreme detail as you already said. and noticed in these images that we have never had the capability of doing at these wavelengths before and stiffly. when we look at these pictures, you know, this is just a, i mean it was described today by nasa as like a grain of sand on the end of your finger tip. what we're seeing here. so we're talking about count with stars, countless galaxies. what is the answer then when i pose the question to you tonight? are we alone? that's a wonderful question. and you know we are working diligently across
10:07 pm
multiple space agencies to, to survey the sky and details that we've never had the capability of doing before. the next generation telescopes are going to be built and designed both for space and the ground to search for you know, asteroids that are coming towards the earth, to search for new planets around other stars that may be in that, that habitable zone where they might have water on the surface, we are in a whole new realm of discovery space. and what we hope to do with the james web space telescope is maybe not look for life itself. but we are hoping to look for those planets around other stars that maybe look something like our own ers atmosphere. and that is when we start getting our short list of targets to do further studies and maybe even start seeing some other signals that might be indicative of, of some sort of biologic geologic or some other phenomenon are process happening on
10:08 pm
that planet. to suggest that it's really of interest. well, well maybe one day we will find out that there is more intelligent life felt better than just what we know here on earth. stephanie milon, we appreciate your time and your insights tonight and congratulations. thank you so much. back on earth and back to a very human undertaking. waging war, ukrainian forces have watched a counter attack in the southern harrison region in line with their plans to retake the territory from russia. keeps as its forces destroyed, and ammunitions depot, and killed over 50 russian soldiers in an attack on the town of nova hope cup, which is held by russia's troops. state media in russia are giving a very different account claiming at least 7 people were killed elsewhere in ukraine's south. the city of nikolai hit by russian attacks clinics and apartment
10:09 pm
buildings were targeted at least a dozen people were injured. earlier i spoke with our corresponded emmanuel shaws innkeeper. she gave us more information about these recent attacks. well, at these attack is just the latest of a string of attacks that actually fell upon a civilian buildings. you mentioned the 2 hospitals, one school, several residential buildings. this is only how, what's happened today, and it's something we've seen happening over and over the past 5 months of war. russian me size falling on a civilian targets these time on this particular attack. they were about a dozen people injured. nobody had died, but dos attacks on a daily basis are deadly. i'm talk, i'm thinking about the latest issues as deadly as so far in as, as a viagra. so in done, i sweated, desta has an increase to over 40,
10:10 pm
and our 1st responders are still searching the rebel. we understand that ukrainian authorities are saying that russian shelves have struck yet another residential building in the southern city of nicola. now that would be just the latest in what appears to be a string of hits on civil civilians. i mean, is this a deliberate strategy that we're c well, grant, russia always says that he doesn't target civilians that he'd only house to t j target. dad being fed, it's been 5 months of war. there's an air red alerts every day, every night, all over ukraine and almost daily, their civilian facilities, civilian buildings, which are being hit and where victims, unfortunately are you know, are under the rebels of the people. dozens of people have already died in such strikes. so it seems at this stage of course that if not deliberate,
10:11 pm
at least could careless you know, or at least in precise missile, or strike a full on your credit on a daily basis. in your mind, when you do, the ukrainian government has been warning for weeks now of an impending counter offensive in the south of the country to push the russians out of that area. what does that tell us about the, the state of the russian military tonight, or the ukrainian military rub? well, you know, the thing is quite telling dot said the ukrainian armed forces warned the population that they have to leave their homes. it also shows where they're from, you know, there's a lot of russian ammunition they posed that have been targeted by ukraine. an armed forces of late and often over the years, you know, prostate pirated are forces, have a bill tagged those ammunition they posed in occupied areas, so a meet civilian. so this explains why civilians have to leave. but we have to keep in mind that even though those cities are, you know, have lost
10:12 pm
a massive amount of inhabitants, sometimes half of them sometimes 80 percent of them even there must have people left there still, people left behind. i'm thinking about the elderly. i'm thinking about people with disabilities are simply people who decided they will simply not leave their homes. did amuse, manual shows for us there in the ukrainian capital in monroe. thank you. the united states, it serves that it has intelligence that iran is preparing to deliver armed drones to the russian military. the u. s. serves, it's unclear whether any drawings have already been delivered, but iran is ready and apparently to train russian troops on their use as early as this month. in the kremlin has announced that president vladimir putin will visit iran in next week. as smaller surveillance, drones are already being used in the war in ukraine for our next report. the w's
10:13 pm
killian buyer traveled to the latvian capital reagan and visited a drone factory there that's struggling to keep up with demand. ukrainian forces have come to rely on reconnaissance drones in their fight against the russian invasion. a few weeks ago these ukrainian refugees did not know which way to turn a screwdriver. now they're building drones for the ukrainian army. atlas aerospace, the latvian company, they now work for san explosion and demand for military grade recognizance drones with the onset of the war in ukraine. previously was like, i was happy to sell 10 drones, belmont, and now you, if you're talking about extra 100 pip amounts and of stuff to think him if, if not enough. and we need to sell to think how we're going to sell more. atlas builds drones that are small enough to be carried by one soldier. they are highly sought after by ukrainian special forces. units equipped with these drones can
10:14 pm
cover large areas for reconnaissance and stream their video feeds back to base in real time in for read thermal imaging cameras turn night into day. atlas says tools like this helps save soldiers lives and the ukrainians are buying so far more than $100.00. drones have already been delivered. the better plan has become a bit more transparent maybe. and you have soldiers that are just more independent can act independently because they already have all the daytime to what's happening over the next hill behind bad wall justice. i am on ukraine's battlefields. consumer drones from china have had a starring role and propaganda video circulating on social media that the soldiers have been modifying these drones to drop bombs. i heard often to devastating
10:15 pm
effect. yeah. yeah, but you won't be stuck in there, but experts say using chinese may drones is potentially dangerous. this video allegedly shows an artillery strike honing in on a ukrainian drone operator. here it's been claim that d j i, the chinese firm producing these drones is passing on gio tracking information to the russian military. something the company denies. back in latvia, atlas aerospace is hiring more ukrainians to increase production. they are keen to help them with when they can drains for the ukranian army. with the help of the strengths we shall win, the war. war is a money maker for some. all of these green bags will be going to ukraine, and they won't be the last, on average, these drones only last for 48 hours in combat. and so the flow of
10:16 pm
equipment will continue. well, enjoy. now, by samuel bended, he's an expert on drones from the center for a new american security. mister bennett is good to have you with this beat. it's hard to imagine this war without drones. how would you say drones are shaping this conflict? thanks for having him back as your report recently indicated, these drones are absolutely key to providing intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities back to the operators back to the units that deliver artillery strikes more around multiple on transit systems. and that provide intelligence information to essentially, anyone willing to fly them. and so these drones have shaped the battlefield for both sides with both sides. now, using both military and commercial, easily obtainable drones such as chinese magic models. we've got reports from us intelligence that iran is said to deliver arm drones to the russians. how would
10:17 pm
that change the reality on the battlefield? i think it's important to recognize what capability russia is seeking. if this deal is to go through a russia lacks loitering munitions and advertise this capability before the war, but hasn't really brought out a lot of these learning munitions against the grain forces. and it also doesn't have a lot of combat. you use an operation, it has released videos of its own combat, drones, striking ukrainian targets piecemeal. but again, that has not been scaled up. if in fact iran is going to sell several 100 drones to russia. it is probably going to include loading munitions and medium to long range combat drones for the russian operations against ukraine. and if that happens, what will that mean for the united states? we understand the u. s. has not yet sent its most sophisticated armed drones to ukraine. do you think that could change?
10:18 pm
possibly, but it did the discussion, excuse me. the discussion about the acquisition of the sophisticated roles by ukraine continues. because there are concerns that if they fall into the russian hands, then very proprietary information is also going to fall into the, into the russian hands. and so i think that has been one of the problems with the ukranian acquisitions of these most sophisticated american drones and other issues . the fact that they weren't going to be a lot of them. i think the numbers discuss for less than less than a dozen or so or even half a dozen. and so the question is whether these joins would actually provide the capability to the korean forces. the same way that the turkish barracks are drums and provided early on in the war. and looking forward here, can you see drones becoming a decisive factor in the coming months, particularly in determining which side wins this war?
10:19 pm
well, they are very important. drones provide a belief, but the drones alone are necessarily winning worse. it is the infantry, it is the ground force that is going to win the war. and so for the russians that seek advantage against ukrainians in the don't boss for the ukrainian military that seeks to raise a large number of forces to push the russians out in the south. drones are going to provide key capabilities to identify the adversarial force and to strike it without most accuracy. and so the more drones one site has, the more capabilities it has in the air to identify and possibly strike the adversary, the better the chances. but again, the actual fighting is going to be down by the ground forces not necessarily by, by the you ease themselves, samuel bin, and as always, we appreciate your time and your insights tonight. thank you. thank you very much. wears a quick look now at some of the other stories that are making headlines around the world. the funeral of former japanese prime minister sions of avi. it's taking

10:25 pm
presently w busy? so what exactly does the euro dollar parity mean for me in my wallet? ah, it depends. i mean, do you don't happen to run a tourism business day? i need you to something else. i mean, if you are running a tour, them a company of some sort right now, it actually could be a good thing for you in some way. i'm basically the euro is quite cheap right now. and for international travel. travers coming from the u. s. for example, it's very cheap for them to come here and throw some of that cash around. so this, it would be a great moment for them to come here and spend some of that. but of course, that's not the case for you. that's not the case for most europeans here, or what it means for us is the exact opposite traveling to the us will be more expensive. also ordering or buying things from the u. s. or that are somehow being imported from the u. s. are going to be more expensive. this applies for european businesses as well, more expensive for them. they're gonna have to pass them that costs on consumers. and as you know, inflation is already very high here in europe. so we end up in kind of
10:26 pm
a vicious cycle where this is potentially gonna make the inflation worse. we're just going to hit the economy, which is going to make the euro even more weak, potentially, if nothing changes. we see the u. s. fed keeps raising interest rates there. that makes the dollar more attractive. i haven't seen any movement yet by the european central banks of what does this mean for the euro's own? right. i mean, it's kind of the same situation to set on a bit of a more macro scale. if your somebody who is exporting in some ways this might be really good for you because your goods are cheaper for american companies right now . so that could increase demand. people love a good deal, obviously, but the inverse is true as well. importing stuff to, to europe is going to get more expensive and that that cost is going to have to get passed on businesses passed on to consumers. eventually, prices keep going up like they have, and as you said, the central bank here has not done a lot on prices. it could mean that people do eventually cut their spending. and this is obviously going to be a disaster for economic growth here. this is when we start carrying even louder
