1:17 am
the biggest air show on earth is back despite flight chaos in the war and ukraine. big deals are getting done at farm bureau. hey, welcome back to the w. a business i'm christy plaza, in berlin. russia's gas prom has told customers in europe it can't guarantee natural gas supplies. citing extraordinary circumstances outside of its control letter seen by reuters. so the company was retroactively declaring force measure a standard clause in business contracts. your fears, motto, moscow could keep the nord stream one pipeline shot after annual maintenance concludes on thursday. germany would be hit especially hard and face supply shortages in the coming months. well far more on this i'd like to bring in my colleague air and tell them from the business desk. he also worked for several years as our moscow correspondents are. you perfect? got ask about this. so tell me what is russia's justification here? how is this out of their hands, or is it more so the repercussions of their own actions?
1:18 am
well, we don't actually know how they justifying this. they haven't actually made any public statements thus far. is all based on a letter that reuters apparently saw. but to be honest, it's not a surprising move when the scheduled maintenance was actually declared. many analysts and politicians throughout europe basically said they were expecting the kremlin uses an excuse to cut off some of the gas deliveries to the european union . and, you know, as one analyst who spoke to the w early today, put it, you know, it's the opening shot was basically becoming a gas war between the russian federation and the european union. and well, this is obviously a major piece of leverage that russia has to play against germany if flows don't resume how badly is this really going to hit germany? well, that really depends on if germany can still get access to his gas. now of course, there is still a natural gas coming into europe and actually coming into germany, of course, but germany is kind of a unique position. it takes over 50 percent of its gas from the russian federation . so this could really hurt germany moving forward. of course, earlier in the year there were some politicians basically saying, you know,
1:19 am
this could result mass unemployment, a massive recession. but many of the economic models that have looked at this basically say that yes, recession could come, especially as we're moving towards the colder months of the year. but they're only looking at maybe a 5 or 6 percent hint to g d p. here in germany. of course this is going to affect industry more than i'm some other sectors of the gas rationing plan that the german government is come up with. basically said that there would would start rationing 1st among the large industry producers before actually moving on to private households. so, you know, the good news, at least for the germ consumer and from in european consumers is those will be able to heat their homes in the winter. but this could have a major negative and downward pressure on the industry as a whole here. ok, well i understand how this might hit germany negatively, but nordstrom one is also a major source of revenue for russia as well. so can you tell me, is this russia acting from a position of power here, or is this more about sanctions biting and then trying to get germany to capitulate it, to be honest, i think this is
1:20 am
a calculated move on the part of russian. of course, you know, back in the early on we saw them putting ukraine under pressure by using this gas question using gas as a leverage. and i think at this point, russia is kind of in a slightly stronger position because the revenues are actually up despite the war in ukraine just because the high natural gas and hydrocarbon prices throughout the, of the world market. you know, at the same time we've, we're kind of in the middle game of this conflict here in the ukraine. we're basically saying ok, politically, it's kind of stalled out from a war of attrition. so they need to find a different way to put the european union under pressure because basically, you know, they want you to back off their support of ukraine in this conflict. and i think they're kind of using gas as a, as a leverage here. and of course, you know, gas is still coming into europe from other pipelines. this is just one of the 1st pipelines are turning off to basically kind of see what the effect is. i mean, this is something we often see from the russian government, the kind of like to cause a little disruption shake things up and just kind of see where the pieces fall. and i think this is them kind of calculating their time to see if it's worth and of
1:21 am
declaring a major gas stop later in the year to really put the european union to pressure. and thank you so much for breaking that down for us. like you well, graces, decades, all fur industry has one major client. we're just speaking about them. russia, much of the fur garments they produce are made specifically for russians and their cold weather climate. but more and more sanctions against moscow have been a big hit to that industry. for 40 years, the store in gas story or greece has produced fur coats of all styles, especially for russian clients. but following russia's invasion of ukraine, the once bustling fir hub of europe has been reduced to vacant buildings and looming unemployment. yes, this is marcia hammock. our warehouses are full from helena. what is when may purchases in 2021 for a 2022 collection. but they're all on sold. they're sitting warehouses, you know, we're desperate weakest. we don't know what to do. my sample civic said with him i

1:23 am
modernize its fleet and that it expects the max plans to reduce the fuel consumption by 20 to 30 percent. the order is great news for boeing, which has recently struggled to compete with his european rival, airbus while for more on the steel, i want to go to our correspondent at the new york stock exchange, jens corta. now jens boeing has really struggled to keep up with air bus after it's max 8 was involved in deadly crashes in 2018. 2019. now this delta deal is the latest in a series of $737.00 orders. does this mean boeing is finally moving past those crashes? well, chrissy, it definitely is around coming. you is so there is no doubt about it, especially as delta has not ordered any plane from boeing for quite some time. and the last figures order is about more than 10 years ago. and also what is quite the thing is that we see the big order. despite that those mac 10 played
1:24 am
do not even have official approval yet in the united states. and there's still a certain chance that maybe boeing has to cancel the production all to get there. but now we have this big order in total. boeing has to more than 700 orders for those to 737, max to 10, a plane so. so that is definitely some good news, but yeah, it's going to take some time to fulfill those orders and the slim chance to make sure the that boy might not get the approval. and the next couple of months might be one reason why the stock of boeing actually didn't do that much. and here in the monday, yes, car to thank you so much. while our corresponding jack park is at farm bureau, despite the chaos currently playing the industry, he saw quite a lot to be excited about the new boeing triple 7, ex,

a giant. ah. and it's one of the star attractions here at the farm. international aschew given was ignited by the news that delta airlines had placed a firm order for 100 of the triple 7. x is smaller brother, the boeing 737 max, a deal worth over 17000000000 euros. the ultimate customer, the asian market, has been severely hit in the past 2 years. that is, there's no hide in that. so there's no secret. ah, but it, it is an industry. it's also m recovery and you need positive signs that recovery. and what better example in the bone daily, just talks about elsewhere at the show, the scaling up of commercialized delivery. drones was brought into focus with the british business secretary announcing a 300000000 euro investment in drone super highways. good news for developers and manufacturers here who, se, initiatives like this will clear up

a messy regulatory landscape. it is hard to follow, you know, especially for us, we have our clients for all over the world, the asking the different questions m a in, in many ways we, we don't know what to say because we don't know all, all those laws and everything that is now in position, so ah, we think that this is a starting point for ross. also significant attention landed on the prototype attack sees they may look futuristic, but the companies making them reckon they'll be fully operational by 2030. even. the farmer international air show is the 1st real major event, the asian industry since 2019 since before the pandemic broke out. and a lot of the people that i've been speaking to here at this as show, say that actually their industry relies heavily on face to face contact on agreements being signed between people who know each other who has sat down around
1:27 am
the table. and actually they really struggle to get deals done over the over the zoom calls and the internet and the video caused that the rest of us have annuity. they have had to continue conducting that business over, but that they've really struggled to push things forward. and that's why we've seen some major deals agreed here at farm bureau, for instance, one of the other things has been quite interesting for that. i've been talking to a few people here at the the conference national. asha bites is the, the issues for travelers at the moment who are turning up to airport, seen huge constellations, real real delays and cues at airports across europe. and indeed, around the world because the airline industry in the airports didn't take on enough staff, people were laid off and i haven't been able to get the soft back and mask created problems around the functioning with the people here. say, listen, that isn't to do with us. we're here to discuss technology. we're here to discuss sustainability, hide the industry, move forward. we're not talking about short term shoes and issues at airports. and
1:28 am
then one of the other things that's interesting is that a lot of excitement about the change in aviation, he used to just be airplanes and helicopters by civil and defense engineering. but now some of the things that we've seen the most excitement around here in the exhibitions of things like flying, ty, sees, and the companies producing the prototypes of the flying taxi to the here. the show say they could be a reality and of cities within 10 years. while that's how it got for more had over to our website, d, w dot com backslash business. you can also find us on the dw news youtube channel, and we're also on facebook. for me in the whole team here in berlin, thank you so much for watching fucking next time. ah, sweden nation rehearsing disaster survival training, full family with stock piling for emergencies. first aid
