panel accuses the former president of filing to colon capital. bryant is also coming up hope scribe, that an international food crisis. kennedy, east, russia and ukraine is sent to sign a deal to reopen ports, the green exports, and more unrest in sri lanka, dozens of injured as security forces, clear the main anti government purchased camp in the capital columbia. ah, i'm anthony howell. welcome to the program. in the united states, the committee investigating the january 6th attack on the capital accused, the former president donald trump, of dereliction of duty for fighting to coal, off the riot investigators drew on testimony from top. what has i to describe the

president's inaction for nearly 3 hours during the assault on the capital for security footage and recorded interviews with those in the white house at the time . the panel argued that trump gave a green light to the violence. the president, president trump did not fail to act during the 187 minutes between leaving the ellipse and telling the mob to go home. he chose not to act from all its crossover to washington d. c and speak with the deputies, sumi, so must gander. good to see you soon after hearing damning accusations about what the former prisoner did in the lead up to january 6. thursday's evidence was more about what he didn't do. that's right, anthony. it was very much about those 187 minutes we heard reference in that clip. that was the time between when he spoke to a supporters at that rally on january 6th. and when he finally released that video, telling them to go home and in between, he essentially did nothing. i mean, we heard significant admissions showing that administration officials,
8:03 am
members of the president's own family top republicans, even the fox news personalities. they were all imploring the chief of staff for president trump to get the president to do something to call off the mob. and that was essentially to no avail. and the president instead continued in those early hours of the right to egg, the mob on with tweets. we also saw that the vice president really was in grave danger so much so that members of his security data detail start to calling their families to say goodbye because they feared for their lives. and, and they, we also saw some previously unseen footage of the president recording a video message on january 7th that he wanted to deliver to the nation in which he refused to say that the election was over. so a more remarkable evidence piecing together the picture of how this riot on the capital happened to me as the former president responded now and what consequences if any, could these investigations have been well,
8:04 am
president trump has from the very beginning, disparaged and discredited these hearings. he's delivered these long tirades on his social media platform truth social, and he did that again on thursday. as for the consequences, that is a big question of debate here in washington. so this committee is not pursuing actual legal action that is not in its purview, that has to come from the department of justice. and we have seen members of this committee say they believe in no uncertain terms that the chain of responsibility for what happened before january 6th and on january 6th loan leads all the way up to the president that he knew the election wasn't stolen. that he tried to coerce election officials and that he incited that riot. but whether that means that we would actually see president trump in court, that's trickier because the department of justice has to weigh up. whether all of this evidence that the committee has presented would actually hold up in court under cross examination. and anthony, just imagine a jury being selected for such a trial in what is an incredibly politicized environment. here,
8:05 am
the u. s. and all that being said, many observers you're believed that all the evidence that's been presented has been so damning that the department of justice will have to do something. so we could possibly see a donald trump facing a legal consequences. so part of that political environment sumi elections on the horizon. where does this leave the republican party? right? yeah, that's an interesting question because on the one hand, the majority, republicans have completely rejected these hearings. they call them political theater, a witch hunt. they want hearings on inflation instead issues more relevant to the american people. and fox news, which i mentioned earlier than main news channel for the right wing, hasn't shown the hearing's live in their entirety. but we have seen a good number of republicans mentioned even implicated in these hearings and we are quietly seeing some members of the party trying to put some distance between themselves and the former president. so these hearings could impact the direction in which the party heads. so me so must kinda in washington thanks so much.

. what those in the know, what to russia, all incoming help is a threat. and it's responding with more attacks and crime, a tourist separates ya. severe internet's expanding the scope of war. that's bringing d. w correspondent, funding fisher, who's in key enforce funny, what more can you tell us on these reports that ukraine and russia will sign a deal to reopen black? see ports to grinding sports on. most of these reports are actually coming from turkey. turkey really tries to brand itself as the main add media to here because there were the other ones that announced yesterday the presidency office there that a deal is going to be signed later this afternoon. in the stumble, now we do not know the exact details of this deal or so we didn't hear anything from russia so far about this deal. and ukraine was also a little bit. how should i say a not very clear on whether
8:09 am
a deal is going to be signed just saying that they expect some news coming out of turkey today. what we do now looking back, what happened last week of these discussions among ukranian, russian officials, broker b, u. n and also turkey to agree on some sort of a cease fire because obviously without the cease fire, it's impossible to get those vessels full of grains through safe corridors. but this is the back big question here. actually if an agreement is put into a i've written full mat, whether all these counterparts can agree on that. in practical terms, with a cease fire can actually be maintained or even starting in the sports like odessa all mc alive as well. because these are key portal towns in regions that are heavily sheldon bond by russian forces. so a lot of things remain sketchy while at the same time. of course, people are hopeful here and ukraine because exporting that grain would not only

mean that you can eat the food crisis. but also of course, you can make money that ukraine needs in order to continue this war and to have a yeah, a chance in this war against russian forces. from the thursday left, the distinct impression russia was broadening the scope of its attacks. once more president zalinski says that he running troops are gaining momentum. what's your breed from their there are different ways to look at this. if you assume in on the dumbass region, for example, there is a lot of shelling going on, especially when you look at tells that from a to arts or bach mood, which are quite close to slow vianza, which is a very, very important town. it is ukrainian controlled, basically the administrative center of the don. yes. region. and this is exactly where russian forces would like to move into. because as you may remember, a neighboring johan screech, and there the tao several done yet. was the key center to take in to actually control the entire johan screen. so we're going to hear

a lot more about some of young in the coming days, but also about all that indiscriminate showing that we've been seeing in that report. for example, in hockey region, at the same time, yes, it seems like your brain and force is also do have a momentum, a given a by western a weapon supplies, especially the high mos, they have a range of 50, can meet of 80 kilometers and can strike various supply chains of russia. we have to see how this develops. certainly the war and ukraine is at a turning point. dw correspondent, funny for sure. thank you. in sri lanka, security forces have cleared the main protest camp in the capital, colombo. it was the base of anti government protests for over 3 months. if not, right, came just hours before the demonstrators were due to voluntarily leave the area and likely to be anchored by the swearing in of new prime minister,

posters up there, thing, run you go home. there were people, mitre lankin facts and protested sitting on the steps. they're all that has changed . this is what it looks like now. and the scene changed actually, in the late hours of the night, police and the army suddenly appeared here in huge numbers, truckloads of soldiers got up. this is a situation now that you see truck loads of soldiers were here, armored personnel carriers were deploy just out there. and you had police commanders and they cleared all the protest is in the presidential secretary as well. isn't the main protest camp back there? didn't they were hundreds of policemen, cure an army officer. some of them moved to the other side, which could indicate that they some trouble. on the other side, they removed most of the protest as from the camp. some resisted, they were roughed up, and some people were detained. and this is what has happened here. and it could be seen as a base provoke to step for protest as would be largely peaceful in the last few

days. so you're standing right in the midst of it. does this feel like a temporary come amrita, or is the new government back in full control of the situation? well, the president, the newly swan president, got it, became a singer, is known as a law and order man. he had warned earlier as soon as he became president, that he will not tolerate any unruly protests. he will not accept anyone going got an occupying government property. he said this would be viewed as an illegal act and they would be consequences. but they are reports, antony, that the protest, as, as you mention, had decided to voluntarily move out of this boat aside. this evening, but the government did not wait and there was a crack down in these dramatic circumstances in the middle of the night. and there's been a huge backlash. this sri lankan lawyers bar association has strongly condemned this and said, why use this disproportionate force against peaceful demonstrators. and then you
