blaze has caused major damage in many areas, but more moist air moved into the region on tuesday. a huge help for the 3000 firefighters battling the oak fire. we had a really good day to day. we got a lot of work done this morning. we reported 10 percent containment on the fire to night were reporting 16 was inconvenient. so you know, it's not a huge number, but it's a pretty big percentage. um, if you look at it that way, the flames erupted last friday and quickly got out of control. the ferocious blaze was fed by tend to dry conditions the region and seeing its worst drought and decades. thousands of people were forced to evacuate their homes. dozens of which have been destroyed. these images showed the blaze smouldering from space. not far south west from yosemite national park officials were concerned. the fire was

heading towards the reserve. but now by believe it warn't reach it. at this point, the fire does not appear to be an imminent threat to yosemite. california has experienced increasingly larger and deadly a wildfire in recent years. and scientists believe that due to climate change, the situation here will only get more unpredictable in the future. stephan simons is as an evacuation center in mariposa, california, and he joins us now live from the same. i stefan, we just heard the firefighters are making progress, but the fi is not quite under control. yes. is that no, not at all far from it. 26 per cent contain now that is a huge jumper and the p i o, the press information officer in the piece was very positive, and that is rightfully so. odd the firefighters who started battling this fi as when it was really smaller just 3 days ago. or 500 fire fighters deployed. now 3000

battling a major fire. 18000 acres. big. this is humongous. the biggest fire in 2022 so far in california. so of course he's positive because they're making progress and they seem and there's the crooks at the moment seemed to be positive that the fire is drifting away from you. so many part, but this can change. this fire is erratic, it jumped so fast and made so many acres, jumps in days, thousands of acres that 3000 fire fighters are now necessary to battle it. okay, now thousands of people have been evacuated. can you tell us more about the situation there and right now yo 1500 structures and structures is the official speak for houses? ranchers, farms were in threat to be destroyed by this fire. so on all those you can count about 3 to 4 people on average. for each of those structures,
8:05 am
that means about all run to $6000.00 people were evacuated or were told to evacuate . many, many did, and they are just down the street from me here where we can film right now. an evacuation said an old elementary school, which is do some renovations. center. some are coming back now because the vacation orders have been lifted because the fire, as we reported rift. however, most people here, businesses had to close because of the evacuations of families left everything behind in just minutes. notice they're devastated. they lost lots of families. last, what they had 25 structures destroyed. and structure means ranch means house means people where people lived and made a living, they're gone. many left, something behind and frustration is of course ramped in multiple. i'm so sorry, understandable. now california has experience larger and deadly wild fires in recent years. right now it's experiencing it's worse droughts and decades. what's

being done to plan for, to try to prevent more fires like this? well, a clean up or getting rid of the brush of the low a growing brushes under the trees. but you know, this is easier said than done because the california has tried this for years. the entire west of the united states, nevada, oregon, washington state, california. of course, those states in the west and even into the midwest. they are suffering from a mega drought 20 years plus no, not enough rainfall every year. the fire chief of california fire last year said california is not fighting a fire season anymore. this is a year round event that fire fighters have to fight fires and that is climate change, global warming. and what can you do? you do the best more equipment, more money thrown at the problem and more people, more firefighters. all right, we'll have to leave it lashed on. simon's in mariposa,

california. thanks so much. let's take a look now at some of the other stories from around the world. a powerful earthquake has hit the northern philippines, killing at least one person, major tremors, damaged buildings at the epicenter, an abroad province, and forced evacuations. more than 300 kilometers to the south. in the capital, manila is the strongest earthquake to hit the philippines in years. 3 united nations peacekeepers and at least 12 civilians have been killed and dozens injured during 2 days of clashes in the east and democratic republic of congo. the protests was spurred. my complaint that a un mission in the region had failed to protect civilians against militia violence . police in mexico city have made what they say is the biggest drug bust in the city's history. authorities seized 1.6 tons of cocaine and hidden compartments into freight trucks. the drugs are believed to have originated from columbia and would

be worth about $20000000.00 us dollars on the street. at a strike by stealth at germany's largest airline, lufthansa has forced the company to cancel almost a 1000 flights on wednesday. any old flights that is domestic hubs, frankfurt and munich have been scrapped is ground cruise demand, higher wages, and this could impact travel plans for more than 130000 passengers. in the coming days, a european countries are preparing for a reduction in gas supply. russia is expected to reduce shipments through the north stream, one pipeline, to just 20 percent of its normal capacity on that starting today. state energy company gas prom announced the move a few days ago and said it's due to maintenance on a turbine. north stream one runs through the baltic sea, directly connecting russia and germany and officials dispute that there are

technical reasons for the current constant deliveries and says it's actually in retaliation for western sanctions imposed on russia for its invasion of ukraine. you countries have agreed on a plan to save gas in the face of these reductions in supply and date of the report to our until 10 is covering a story for us. a hi our and get to see you now is germany actually prepared for this reduction in gas supply? no, it really isn't. it's kind of like a car crash. you might be able to brace right of the last minute to prevent some of that impact from hitting you. but at the end of the day, you're never really ready for hitting the steering wheel. it's kind of the situation we're in right now. yes, we've seen plans from ministers to reduce european union wide gas consumption by 15 percent. germany has come up with a new plan to allow them to ration gas as the gas applies get shorter, but at the end of the day, they're not terribly ready for it. i mean,

a great example of that is the fact, well, i'm moving house right now. last year to heat my house with gas. i paid 50 euros a month looking at the new place and moving into the new prices are between $270.31 . and the gas company already told me those prices are going to keep going up. and that's exactly what the russian government is trying to do right now. they want to put the german and european consumer under pressure so that they put pressure on their politicians to kind of bring back support, walk better support for the ukraine in this current conflict. the, the russian gas coming through the north stream one pipeline is being cut to just 20 percent of its normal capacity is a complete cast off likely any time soon. we know that depends very much and how german consumers, european consumers and german politicians and european politicians react to this current move. now, you know, i've reported on russia for d, w for around 70 years now until we were actually kicked out of the country earlier . this year, and you really noticed a tendency over and over by the german,
8:11 am
by the russian government rather, to not really have a long term strategy rather to kind of think in the moment what they're trying to do right now is they're trying to give germany that you a little bit of a push they're trying to destabilize them to see how much panic they can create, how much pressure they can create. that's very much going to determine their long term strategy. because of course, you have to remember, the russian government is dependent upon hydrocarbon sales for around 55 percent of their budget. and right now, you know their pocketbook is for those gas prices are up. so they're actually making more money right now. and they were before the start of the conflict and ukraine. so they see themselves in a very, very strong position to say ok, maybe we can give us a little bit of chaos and see exactly what type of long term strategy we can then adopt as we move towards the colder months. russia says this is happening because of maintenance. obviously, the german government says that's not true. he should be believed. well, to be honest, i do find it very difficult to believe moscow's excuse. right. now,
8:12 am
you have to remember, you know, they can deliver as much gas as they want to in the current environment. we've actually seen that, you know, while they're, they're walking back the gas supplies from nordstrom one at the same time. they also announce that they're going to be doubling or increasing the gas supply through another pipeline. it's not really a believable excuse. and we know, you know, they've used gas as a weapon before, you know, they put, they used gas to put ukraine under pressure back in the early 2, thousands. so this is something we've seen them do again, again as times moving forward. so yes, i don't really believe the turbine, the turbine excuse is, are until 2. thank you so much. thank you. and germany is already under the 2nd phase of the 3 stage emergency gas plant. 3rd, the supply cuts could see gas being rationed. let's take a look now how businesses here are preparing this is bucker's, show me the german multinational employees around 60000 people and is just one of

the many companies in the so called chemicals triangle, in germany, southern state up of area cracking furnace is like these require massive amounts of energy and draw much of their power from russia natural gas. without gas flows in the proper amount. the company will struggle to keep production going. visit or a paid for at cost is or found. we're dependent on natural gas because we run on gas turbines that generate our power and take care of our heating as well. if the supply stops, will have to stop the gas turbine and get our power and heat from external sources . and that would be a massive challenge in the bam, on the, by the thickness valdez. really, the russian gas for this region transits over ukraine for storage in austria, where it can then be delivered to bavaria. but moscow has been cutting down on flows through this channel. should russia completely cut off supply? vaca shimmies energy demands will increase, forcing it to generate heat, with oil shipped from italy with them. and those

are the steps would have to take to deal with a challenge. but if a gas stoppage come, suddenly, it will be very difficult to switch production methods. shelves with the company presents its new plans during a conference. it wants to pivot away from natural gas towards environmentally friendly hydrogen. this only requires water, but also green energy from wind and solar power. and electrolysis plants split the hydrogen and oxygen for use. in theory, it's a solution to using gas, but only in the mid to long term. and with considerable investment the company is retraining its employees to make the transformation possible. a local university will offer a new major focusing on hydrogen engineering, acquitted degrees in currently, this crisis is a threatening scenario. but i think that it again demonstrates that how we need to complete this transformation process that we've already started even more determine
