u. s. fire fights as res hopes of saving you semitic national park. a giant blaze threatening its ancient trees shifts, direction, evacuation orders are still in place, the thousands of residents and europe ready for russia to turn down the gas flows through the nord stream pipeline offsets be cut today. ukraine's president says russia is using gas to terrorize europe. plus at the euro's for all tournament, hosts, england off through to the final after facing sweden. l play either germany or france faceoff to late as a day. ah, i'm and you keeps mckinnon. thanks so much for joining us. ground staff at germany's largest airline. lufthansa has begun a strike, which has forced the company to cancel over a 1000 flights. nearly all flights,
9:02 am
3 love tons of hubs in frankfort and munich. have been scrap starting this morning of a disruption could impact travel plans for more than 130000 passengers worldwide . in the coming days. trade unions representing ground work as a demanding a pay increase to cope with rising living costs. ok, let's get more from dw correspondent christy plots and who joins us now from frankfurt. hi christy. good morning to you. give us a sense of the situation there and also how, how the passengers reacting morning. anya, well, this line of people you can see behind me, they are all waiting to be re booked on other live love tons of flights. other flights have been cancelled a few hours ago. the line ended up behind me about what you see here, but now it wraps all the way around, back through the terminal. i couldn't even see the and
9:03 am
a few minutes ago when i went to go find it, we got over a dozen counters here dedicated just to re booking these customers. they have been funneled into this cattle around that we all know so well from, from travelling through airports. and obviously people are quite frustrated. i spoke to one group of people, for example, they were supposed to fly to barcelona for vacation at 1 pm today. the flights been canceled, they were here already at 7 a. m told to come and figure out what's gonna happen there. 6 people, they're very skeptical that they're all going to get re booked on the same flight. i also spoke to a man from, from australia. he's trying to get back to dubrovnik where he lives. he actually slept in the terminal last night trying to catch an early morning flight and he said he expects he's going to have to sleep here again to night. he said he was very frustrated with the lack of information on love tonsils part. he had to go around asking a lot of different people getting a lot of conflicting information. these are just 2 examples. we've got hundreds and thousands of people here who are going to be dealing with the same issues today. so a lot of frustration,
9:04 am
especially for people trying to go on holidays. i can only imagine how frustrating it must be that, but it's not just frank, but is it so, i mean what, what, where else are we seeing the impact of what's happening? right. i mean here in frankfort alone over 90000 passengers have been affected by these cancellations. but that's absolutely correct. also, the airport in munich. another major global airport hub has also been affected over 40000 passengers. there are also seeing their flights canceled or delayed, but it's also important to take a step back and realize that those are just a just cancellations due to this lufthansa strike for weeks. now europe's airline industry has been plagued by cancellation by delays for various reasons. we've had huge demand for travel, obviously in his post coven summer, people getting out there. but so much of the airport staff, a and pile. are people working on plans as well. were laid off during the pandemic as that huge labor shortages here. and
9:05 am
a lot of the workers are just feeling overworked, especially with really high inflation. right now. they're also feeling underpaid. so we've also seen a cancellation delays also strikes from other airlines, scandinavian airlines, for example, also in france up. so this is just of the, the next set of cancellations and troubles that the airline industry here has been dealing with kristi implants and we'll have to leave it there. christy johnson and frankie. all right, we're going to say look now at some of the other stories from around the world to nicea has approved a new constitution in a referendum mod by low voter turnout and accusations of fraud. changes to the constitution have granted unchecked powers to the office of president chi saheed, but his critics have accused to be elect for a board of falsifying turn out figures of the rivals boycotted vote. a powerful earthquake has hit the northern philippines, killing at least 4 people,
9:06 am
and injuring dozens. major tremors, damaged buildings at the epicenter, an upper province and forced evacuations. more than 300 kilometers to the south and the capital. manila is the strongest earthquake to hit the philippines in years. 3 united nations peacekeepers and at least 12 civilians have been killed and dozens injured during 2 days of clashes in the east and democratic republic of congo. the protests was spurred by complaints. the un mission in the region had failed to protect civilians against militia violence. now, fire fighters in the us state of california as they they, they are making progress in containing a giant blaze on the edge of yosemite national park. the fire that's been raging since saturday was threatening the parks giants the co trees, and many endangered animals. but now favourable weather conditions have slowed the
9:07 am
blaze. at the fire has already destroyed dozens of homes and forced thousands of residents to evacuate. just some of the destruction after fi ripped through mariposa county, the huge blaze has caused major damage in many areas, but more moist air moved into the region on tuesday. a huge help for the 3000 firefighters battling the oak fire. read a really good day today. we got a lot of work done this morning. we reported 10 percent containment on the fire to night were reporting 16 percent containment. so you know, it's not a huge number, but it's a pretty big percentage. um, if you looked at it that way, the flames erupted last friday and quickly got out of control. the ferocious blaze was fed by tend to dry conditions the region and seeing its worst drought and decades. thousands of people were forced to evacuate their homes. dozens of which
9:08 am
have been destroyed. these images showed the blaze smouldering from space. not far south west from yosemite national park officials were concerned. the fire was heading towards the reserve. but now by believe it warn't reach it. at this point, the fire does not appear to be an imminent threat to yosemite. california has experienced increasingly larger and deadly a wildfire in recent years. and scientists believe that due to climate change, the situation here will only get more unpredictable in the future. as back to dw correspondence, stephan simons earlier who's asked him evacuation center in mariposa, california. and i asked him if i, if i says, have now gotten the fire under control. no, not at all. it's far from it. 26 per cent contain. now that is a huge jumper and the p i o, the press information officer in the piece was very positive,
9:09 am
and that is rightfully so. odd the firefighters who started battling this fires when it was really small, or just 3 days ago, or 500 fire fighters deployed. now 3000 battling a major fire. 18000 acres. big. this is humongous. the biggest fire in 2022 so far in california. so of course he's positive because they're making progress and they seem and there's the crooks at the moment seem to be positive that the fire is drifting away from you. so many part, but this can change, this fire is erratic, it jumped so fast and made so many acres. jumps in days, thousands of acres that $3000.00 fire fighters are now necessary to battle it. okay, now thousands of people have been evacuating. can you tell us more about the situation there and right now, you know, 1500 structures and structures is the official speak for houses?
9:10 am
ranchers, farms were in threat to be destroyed by this fire. so on all those you can count about 3 to 4 people on average for each of those structures. that means about all around 6000 people were evacuated or were told to evacuate many, many did. and they are just down the street from me here, where we can film right now in the recreation center, an old elementary school, which is usa, america curation center. some are coming back now because the recreation orders have been lifted because the fire, as we reported rift. however, most people here businesses had to close because of the evacuations of families left everything behind in just minutes. notice their devastated they lost lots of families. last, what they had 25 structures destroyed. and structure means ranch means house means people where people lived and made a living. they're gone. many left, something behind and frustration is of course ramped in multiple.
9:11 am
i'm so sorry, understandable. now california has an experience larger and deadly wild fires in recent years. right now it's experiencing it's less drought in decades. what's being done to plan for, to try to prevent more fires like this? well, a clean up or getting rid of the brush of the low a growing brushes under the trees, but you know, this is easier said than done because the california tried this for years. the entire west of the united states, nevada, oregon, washington state, california. of course, those states in the west and even into the midwest. they are suffering from a mega drought 20 years plus no, not enough rainfall every year. the fire chief off a california fire last year said california is not fighting a fire season anymore. this is a year round event that fire fighters have to fight fires and that is climate
9:12 am
change, global warming. what can you do? you do the best more equipment, more money thrown at the problem and more people, more firefighters. all right, we'll have to leave at their stuff. and simon's in mariposa, california, thanks so much and many countries in europe have also seen major wildfires in recent days of climate change exacerbates heat waves and droughts. germany is the latest with blazes burning in some of its eastern states. and the fire fighting effort has been complicated by unexploded munitions left over from world war 2. huge clouds of smoke rise over southern brandenburg around 850 hacked as of forest, a burning equal to 1200 football fields. it was on the young marshall fighting a large fire hill had become filled and that area we can't access because old munitions might have been dumped the angle helicopters and now helping fight the blaze. but during the night,
9:13 am
strong winds spread the flames quickly and in new directions. hundreds of people were evacuated, that many animals could not be saved to bonds at a pig farm. burnt down wouldn't logo unfortunately it by if i does. we're also injured from inhaling, smoke gathering or for us still receiving treatment and hospital money from the robot. in other parts of germany, fires have spread across the border from the czech republic, threatening a national park dollars discussion. we have limited resources, so it's difficult to villarreal excitement. there's no water on site. frank, so we can only try to contain fire helicopters, a drawing water from the nearby elbow river. the authorities of issued a disaster alert for nearby towns and set a ban on entering forests for the entire district. a european countries are preparing for reduction in gas supply. russia is expected to reduce shipments
9:14 am
through the north stream at one pipeline to just 20 percent of its normal capacity . and that is starting today. state energy company gas from announced the move a few days ago and said it's due to maintenance on a turbine node stream one runs through the baltic sea directly connecting russia and germany. berlin officials disputes that there are technical reasons for the current cost and deliveries. and say it's actually in retaliation, the western sanctions imposed on russia for its invasion of the crate. you countries have a great on a plan to save gas in the face of these reductions and supply. and d, w report to our and tilton is covering this story for us. hi our, and get to see you now. is germany actually prepared for this reduction in gas supply? no, it really isn't. is kind of like a car crash. you might be able to brace right at the last minute to prevent some of that impact from hitting you. but at the end of the day,
9:15 am
you're never really ready for hitting the steering wheel. it's kind of the situation we're in right now. yes, we've seen plans from ministers to reduce your european union wide gas consumption by 15 percent. germany has come up with a new plan to allow them to ration gas as the gas applies get shorter, but at the end of the day, they're not terribly ready for it. i mean, a great example of that is the fact. well, i'm moving the house right now. last year to keep my house with gas. i paid 50 euros a month looking at the new place and moving into the new prices are between $270.31 . and the gas company already told me those prices are going to keep going up. and that's exactly what the russian government is trying to do. right now. they want to put the german and european consumer under pressure so that they put pressure on their politicians to kind of bring back support, walk better, support for the ukrainians. current conflict the, the russian gas coming through the north stream one pipeline is being cut to just 20 percent of its normal capacity. is a complete cas off likely anytime soon. we know that depends very much and how
9:16 am
german consumers, european consumers and german politicians and european politicians react to this current move. now, you know, i've reported on russia for d, w for around 78 years now until we were actually kicked out of the country earlier this year. and you really noticed a tendency over and over by the german, by the russian government, rather, to not really have a long term strategy rather to kind of think in the moment what they're trying to do right now is they're trying to give a germany that you a little bit of a push they're trying to destabilize them to see how much panic they can create, how much pressure they can create. that's very much going to determine their long term strategy. because of course, you have to remember, the russian government is dependent upon hydrocarbon sales for around 55 percent of their budget. and right now, you know, their pocket book is for those gas prices are up. so they're actually making more money right now. and they were before the start of the conflict and ukraine. so they see themselves in a very, very strong position to say ok, maybe we can give us a little bit of chaos and see exactly what type of long term strategy we can then
9:17 am
adopt as we move towards the colder months. russia says this is happening because of maintenance, obviously, and the german government says that's not true. he should be believed. well, to be honest, i do find it very difficult to believe moscow's excuse. right. now, you have to remember, you know, they can deliver as much gas as they want to in the current environment. and we've actually seen that, you know, while they're, they're walking back, the gas supplies are not stream one. at the same time, they also announce that they're going to be doubling or increasing the gas supply through another pipeline. it's not really a believable excuse. and we know, you know, they've used gas as a weapon before, you know, they put, they used gas to put ukraine under pressure back in the, in the early 2, thousands. so this is something we've seen them do again, again as times moving forward. so yes, i don't really believe the turbine, the turbine excuse is, are until 2. thank you so much. thank you. we can cross now cdw nick connelly and keith to get the ukrainian perspective on this story. hi,
9:18 am
nick. tell us what the ukrainians make of this rather than the frame one pipeline. the certainly an element of we told you so that the ukrainians feel like they weren't believed when they warned western europe in particular. germany, that russia would weaponized gas line from berlin all along. was that for all the political disputes, the disagreements? russia was a reliable supplier of gas of energy and wouldn't threaten the future of its energy exports to europe by playing these games. and now that has happened exactly the thing that you can experience in the past. as aaron mentioned, that is now happened well enough in the short term, it looks like there's gonna be more gas flowing through ukraine to western europe right now because of those, those reductions in the gas flow through the no stream pipeline. so yeah, a $150.00 plus days of war between russia and ukraine and still those energy flows going through ukraine in spite of the conflict. there was interesting moment just a couple of days ago where the russians suddenly without any warning up the
9:19 am
pressure in the pipeline or something that could have caused a technical mishap, could have caused exhibiting damage to the gas pipelines here. and the cranes were able to avert in the last moment, but it was seen by the training side, an attempt to basically create further excuse for gas delivery reductions to basically destroy some equipment on the ground here in ukraine and say, oh well, sorry, we don't have the option right now and gas, so a lot, so for wearing us here about more attempts from moscow to try and come up with reasons to stop europe of gas that meanwhile, there's been fighting and the hockey region. can you give us a quick update on what's going on there? well, we've seen rusty use as 300 missiles, georgia and t, m, and t missile and t, their croft missiles against land targets. that's really a sign that russia is running out of massage, running out of high tech equipment hardship. it's ukraine, 2nd big city, but certainly 40 kilometers away from the russian border. city that kind of in between, in the middle of this war had felt a bit safer, where people had thought they could get back some kind of normal life. and that now
9:20 am
is very much, once again on the front lines and suburbs of had keep being attacked almost daily. it's a real sense here that you know, any air raid sirens. any warnings will have to be taken very seriously because basically wherever you are, and especially if you're anywhere near those front lines in the country, you know, as civilian always at risk of attack from those russian forces. thanks about 8, nick hudson connelly reporting from keith and climate change. and the conflict in ukraine are threatening global st. security . and as particularly affecting parts of africa, where a record number of people are facing hunger, our food supply problems are pushing farmers there to change their methods. a w correspondent, blaze young, traveled to the village of that d bundari in cameroon. to meet with a business man and a farmer who is promoting smart agriculture is in green houses 10

and we've got some sports news now and tournament host, england off through to the final of euro, 2022 off to beating sweden for nell, the lionesses cat. their composure after a fiercely contested start to the game in sheffield. forward beth meet school has 6 goal of the tournament, giving her the joint most goals in a single euros. england will play either germany or france who face off on wednesday more on the year as i'm trying to buy our sports reporter max merrill. hey max. and tell us how england got this done yet in bonds, doing fashion for nil. but at the beginning, it looked all about sweden, the 1st 20 minutes england were on the back foot. and so we really should have scored an after about half an hour beth meet. as you mentioned, getting her 6 go the tournament top score just coming up again. for england,
9:25 am
against the run of play, and in the 2nd half the floodgates open. but you have to criticize sweden here. the number to rank side in the world really showed some defensive frailty in the 2nd half but goals. lucy bronze than alessio russo who came on as a sub scoring her full goal of the tournament. she's only been a sub this whole tournament, so another weapon, england have in their arsenal. and then frank kirby with another wonderful goal showing the depth and quality england have now setting them up for a final at wembley, which is likely to be sold out. and they are arguably the strongest side in this torment. but they do have a few weaknesses which could be exploited on sunday. so in wednesdays, any final and it's going to be germany versus france. and how do you see that playing out? well, i see germany as the favorites that they weren't firm favorites to win. it pre tournament, which is quite surprising considering out of the 12 women's years we've had germany, 18. so you can see they have the track record, but this wasn't necessarily seen as the best score they've had in a long time. i do think now they are the firm favorites in this game. one blow to
9:26 am
them is clark blue. they're forward who has started. all 4 games is out with cove it, but they have enough depth to compensate. france have been good, but not great. so i really see germany going through to the final england would have a slight edge over them in the coaching positions that in a v man, england's coach, coached netherlands, her native country to yours when in 2017. and so has all the tactical now there. but germany are pressing machine in england. i've watched them closely over the last 2 games against sweden and spain. look a little bit susceptible to effect of pressing which germany just fantastic at would have a repeat of the 2009 final between in germany back then germany 162. i think it's going to be a lot closer. this time. both teams have strength, depth, and star power, which is the combination every coach dreams of so i think you'll be a cracking final. but 1st germany have to beat france looking for a techno right next merrill from d w. sports. thank you. all right,
