a negotiator. it's cold for all 5 today, escalates warning, a miscalculation could lead to open conflict or earlier dw jr gave me an update on the military maneuvers taking place around ty, one well, one thing is for sure china is holding is largest ever a minister exercise around to taiwan on the eastern seattle command of the people's liberation army said long wrench armed life, fire, precision missile strikes were carry out on the selected area a to selected targets in the it's an area of to tie ones tried to draw is to test to precision strike and the area, the 9 capabilities and according to the chinese military, oh me says a currently heath their targets on most importantly the p. o. a claimed that the entire life fire training mission has been successfully completed and they are

in production of concrete odd to doing the street for the asphalt. and most of the sand and gravel imported into tiven comes from china. so the whole impact or the whole economic impact on taiwan. whoa, is already very big. and we are expecting that it's getting bigger and bigger. okay . data is genuine. thank you so much for that update us for now to the war on ukraine and ukraine's foreign ministry says russia is treating ukrainian prisoners of war illegally and using them for political purposes, which is strictly forbidden. under the geneva conventions. russia and proxy authorities in eastern ukraine have charged dozens of soldiers with crimes. 3 foreign born ukrainian soldiers have been sentenced to death on allegedly fabricated charges. dw burger shook. i met the parents of one man being held by the russians. they fear he could suffer a similar fate each morning if gania would kevin take some
5:08 pm
time for herself and quite to look at her son. she hasn't heard from maxine since russian forces captured him 2 months ago. she scared there might be torturing him, or that he might be dead. you do cylindrical i sit in the kitchen and just cry while my husband is still sleeping. when he gets up, i wash my face in person lights and try to be strong for the day and not to cry any more. only in the early mornings i allow myself to cry. what's it different as windows? yeah, the capital invited us to their home because they want the world to know about their son. his parents say, maxine volunteered to join the army, even though he is a pacifist, he had worked as a journalist and activist campaigning for refugees and human rights. but when russia invaded, he decided to take more direct action to wish you use go. so she do need to,
5:09 pm
he told me i'm joining the army because i have to defend the values i've been fighting for my whole life. yes, this is bruce. they only realized he had been captured when a video of maxine being interrogated was shown on russian state media with to boucher. it was horrible. the 1st thing i felt was just horror. i saw my early childhood listening through them. i thought that can't be true crow kremlin telegram tennis quickly called maxime and nazi a nationalist. they even said he was a british spy because he had worked as a local producer for the b b. c. in tucson cree issues in the blue cross blue storm . my biggest concern is that they might not recognize him as a prisoner of war, like they have with others e and that they would fabricate a criminal case against him. so using all those lies and twisted evidence, latisha with some of a good,
5:10 pm
a storage. it was just when you free our domestic intelligence soul has called home that russia is holding more than 7000 ukrainian. so just prison. but they won't talk about any of it on camera. because negotiations for prisoners swaps on top secret. a lawyer representing the families of more than 50 captured soldiers has agreed to talk with us. let us laugh. we could not see. it works closely with domestic intelligence to try to get prisoners back. he expects that russia will fire more and more criminal cases against ukrainian prisoners of will. i think this is so this is don mostly for their political purposes. when you create search and, you know, important to person gray marches, you know, you may use it to in their political, you know, treat but yes. again. yeah. and or like sunday i don't want things to get that far
5:11 pm
. they fire the nerd into peer to the european court of human rights. they say they will fight with everything they have until maxine, it's really a report was filed by my colleague brigitte ashika who i spoke to earlier. i asked her how ukrainians were reacting to the allegations made in her report. it is a huge topic. her and many are worried about the fate of the prisoners of war because many have family of friends in the military. and people here are not only worried, they are also furious because especially after dozens of prisoners of war were killed just last week in an attack on a detention facility in russian heard all in the scar, russia and ukraine have played, blamed each other for that. but the assessment here in keith is very clear. they say the russians have blown up this detention facility to destroy evidence of torture and killing. and satellite image from that side seem really to support this
5:12 pm
claim. that's what experts are also told us. so ukraine now was trying very hard to push for an investigation, but we just learned that the red cross still wasn't granted any access to the side by the russians. so for many here in ukraine, this is like an other indication that russia really has to hide something, and they really might have deliberately killed prisoners of war. forget or we heard in your report there that maxine's father says he's worried that the prosecution will fabricate charges. against his son or that he won't be recognized as a prisoner of war. but, but he peered over. use can still be accused in court cafe. yes, absolutely. yeah. the geneva conventions as stayed very clearly that it's possible, but it's not possible to charge somebody only for the fact that he has been
5:13 pm
fighting in a war on one side of the conflict. it's only allowed, according to the geneva conventions, to charge somebody if you really committed severe crimes. and we have been seeing this here in ukraine or russian soldier was prosecuted for killing or, or murdering. let me put it like bad to 62, a year old man, outside, off of combat, and to their ukraine prosecutor is investigating thousands of alleged war crimes committed by a russian soldiers. as for russia, human rights organizations, they have criticized that russia often doesn't present any evidence or a barely any evidence and for, for these severe crimes when they charge people and i for instance. so in this case, you have mentioned this 3 soldiers who were handed down a death verdict by the russian
5:14 pm
a proxy use in the don bass region. international organizations were shocked about this verdict because there were barely any evidence presented in that case. and the un human rights offers has also sharply criticized it, saying that such, such our triads against prisoners of war would or would amount to a to a war crime itself. thank you so much for that. british walker reporting for us from keith. well, let's go to 11 on now where several marches are taking place in the capital to day . demonstrators demanding justice for those killed in beverage. massive portside blast 2 years ago. many blamed government corruption and mismanagement for the explosion which devastated huge parts of the capital city. killing more than 200 people and injuring 7002 years on the investigation into the bloss has stalled,
5:15 pm
and no state official has been held to account un experts or calling for an international inquiry. we are looking across to d. w. bay route bureau. she's mohammed chateau standing by near where that explosion took place. years ago, mohammed had just days ago we saw the partial collapse of some grain silos that had been damaged in that explosion. can you tell us what the latest is there? a few moments ago. huge blocks of the files, a lot of then your name, the notion part of the site. it wasn't spectrum labs and it just happened on the very 2nd anniversary. activate records exposure. oh, it's what the timing is been 2 years since that explosion and a launch of an official investigation has since then taken place,
5:16 pm
but i want to know why it has not produced any results. it's been exactly 2 years since the battle for the close and yet until today, no one has been held accountable for the charge be that struck never non. in fact, the investigating judge thought of overseeing the investigation has not been able to continue or proceed with his problem back, including full efficiency seeking his removal and they are constantly lodging complaints again again, judge the thought and base is blocking the investigation and we know protesters are taken to the street today, what exactly are demonstrator is calling for well,
5:17 pm
with no sign that the domestic investigation will you forward to protest including family members and friends of the victims have been probing the 3 today. calling for an international investigation or a route euro chief mohammed traitor. thank you so much for that update. change gears now and talk about breast feeding help. experts have a long said that it is the most beneficial way to feed a baby. united nations says less than half of all infants are exclusively breast fed in their 1st 6 months. it's currently world breast feeding week, and so the us has been trying to raise awareness of the issue. in this next report, we're going to take a look at france, which for years has had one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the world. mulling matthew has a very young visitor at work today. a 5 month old daughter boone, she's a 3rd child, moline, still breastfeed so once or twice
5:18 pm
a day. the world health organization says breastmilk is the ideal food for infants providing essential nutrients that help protect against illness. brutal also drinks formula since melinda, a lawyer had to go back to work 3 months after her booked. but juggling works, she says, isn't the only challenge when it comes to breastfeeding her daughter in france? all her turn cuz people are surprised that they still breastfeed her. i came back from hospital after her birth and was really exhausted. people would say, why are you torturing yourself by breastfeeding? take it easy, your husband should take her. now i did feel a bit java torn lower. there are some more whistle till monday. this is her decision to nurse starting with the 1st child 6 years ago was not an easy one. i felt a bit alone. i was surprised when staff at the maternity hospital gave my son a feeding bottle. without my consent, i really wanted to breastfeed him. it was the 1st sign that something was wrong. it
5:19 pm
have come out with the mother phony. mullins experience is not unusual in france. statistics showed that less than 70 percent of mothers will start breastfeeding at all, and the number drops to just 22 percent after 6 months. experts see a big reason is frances, relatively short maternity leave to 16 weeks after baby's book. but the aversion to nursing once deeper than that carol l. v is a private lactation consultant in northern paris. she helps future mothers prepared to breastfeed her and helps troubleshoot when there's a problem with our printer left over here to dishes, advising a client over the phone or so. now carol says women wanting to breastfeed and france fis an uphill battle because of the lack of awareness across society. but it's a great, like a support support from the community. in general, the health care professionals just talk with talking much,
5:20 pm
much about breast feeding. so as soon as there's some kind of issue, they will say, well then you can go home, you can, maybe you can drop, right? we're treating and unusable tool. then the french feminists in the seventy's weren't really into breastfeeding. in comparison to sweden or the region mothers, all mothers didn't breast feed. so we don't have a culture that supports breastfeeding. despite the flu, breast feeding wave france is far from being the only country, but mothers switch early to infant formula. the world health organization says that across the globe, less than half of all new want operate fed with the post i will put or drink breast milk exclusively for the recommended 6 months. i am very pleased to welcome growing your maloney senior nutrition advisor you know stuff like the w h o unit staff recommends exclusive breast feeding for the 1st 6 months of
5:21 pm
a baby's life. but many women stop before that recommended time is over. what are the most common reasons for that? thank you so much for having me today and for a fact. and i, you know, highlighting this really important issue during this world's breastfeeding week. yes, so breath milk and breastfeeding is the ultimate silver bullet for public health response. for children, it protects against all forms of malnutrition and it also is a vaccine for babies. and it also has an impact on women's future risk of health, as well as reduce the risk diabetes in obesity. and it's even good for the planet to. so we actually have amazing evidence to show this is the best thing for our infants. but as you really showed, well in the, in that program from, from france, it's not easy. so the 1st thing to acknowledge is that are the majority of women actually wanted to breastfeed over 95 percent of infants globally, r breastfed are in fact at some stage in their life. but those numbers drop off and
5:22 pm
the main reasons for dropping off are number one, access to skilled counseling. it's great to hear of, of this persistence of this woman in france. but actually, breastfeeding can be difficult. and if a mom does not have the right support either before she had her baby and then as soon as the baby is born, it can be very difficult and frustrating for her. if she has a baby that's awake on that crying and the, the baby may have a colleague and she's feeling frustrated and she's getting pressure from family members to say, you know, as your example to say, you know, just give a bottle. that's really difficult. but we know that women who do have access to skill counseling, they do well, and they're much more likely to continue breastfeeding. so that's the 1st, the 2nd again, as you articulated well, is the lack of family friendly policies. making sure that employers do allow women the time they need to have their maternity leave than to breastfeed exclusively for 6 months, and up to 2 years along them access to breastfeeding rooms in the workplace. flexible working areas and of course, quality child care. and then
5:23 pm
a big one that is to blame to is the behavior of the foreman america industry. this industry constantly looking at the profit margins are, are drip feeding to mothers, the benefits of their product superiority of their products of breastmilk. and then questioning mothers and making them feel not empowered to continue their breastfeeding journey. so there's many different reasons, but they would be the major 3. once again, i just want to ask, what is unicef doing to help improve that situation and provide that kind of support needed? so we work in close to 200 countries around the world. we work both in high income countries and in lower and middle income settings to work with the government says our main part partner to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. so when we talk about protection, that's legislation to pass laws on the marketing and promotion of breast milk substitutes that i mentioned earlier, but also to help governments pass laws for family friendly policies. so that women can actually continue the breastfeeding journey, colonial sworn governments to, to make an annoyed, we're gonna have to leave it there. but i wouldn't think so much for talking to us
5:24 pm
about this really important issue. my favorite time reasons. we're gonna have to jump out, but thank you again for joining us. plenty of you news really appreciate it. really go now to some breaking news. a russian court have found u. s. basketball player, brittany griner guilty of drugs, possession and smuggling. the sport star was arrested for allegedly carrying a vague pen in her luggage, which contained marijuana oils, russian authorities that the charges brought against her were fully proven, bought the u. s. has said she has been wrongfully detained before the sentence. and greiner pleaded with the judge, pray, favourable rolling let's get straight across today. was russia analyst konstantin egger on this breaking news story? constantine is as a surprising verdict to you. no, absolutely not. actually. no, i think 99 percent literally 99 percent of r o court cases in russia and in a guilty verdict. so brittany druck griner in this respect,
5:25 pm
is no different from ordinary russian. and of course, in such a context, it's clear that she has become a hostage and before she's exchanged, i think that's going to happen for someone in the u. s. the sentence has to be severe. that's the russian traditional and speaking of prisoner exchanges, there have been high level diplomatic efforts between laugh rav and blank and discussing a prisoner exchange. and you do think then that that is still on the table or yes, definitely. so she was arrested a prior to the last rhonda wall, ah, 17th of every week before put in re invaded he cried. but since the beginning of the 2nd raw, the war ha, she's become a much more valuable hostage for the kremlin covenant. for a long time wanted, ah, one russian citizen, victor boot pilot, who's been accused of armed smuggling and who serves
5:26 pm
a very long sentence in the us to be exchanged, walked out and i think the written griner is very much a candidate for such us won't put in for long time, vote to get this mr. boot back into russia. and i think that will very close to that i suppose is going to be exchange of i think 2 or 3 americans that are now in russia for one, mr. boot. so this all doesn't sound like it's really about brittany greiner personally, i'm, it's as prisoners. what goes ahead? is it going to be a swap? that seems fair to both sides? usually, yes. usually both sides think that that's in their interest to bring the people back. so i suppose that we are in the last stage of such negotiation, i will, i will, i will venture a suggestion that very soon off to the, the sentence is pronounced. i, oh, it will be kind of the, the trust where will be organized. mil, alas, it's not as dramatic as it used to be during the cold war on the bridge of spies
5:27 pm
and berlin, but definitely i think very soon written griner and other americans will be constantine. i got thank you so much for that update with you just now having coming across the dusk. the news that brittney griner husband sentenced to 9 years in prison will be following the story for you here on dw news. i'll be back with that at the top of the hour. in the meantime, you can stay up to date on our website, d, w dot com or follow up on social media. that's at the unit. i'm quite richardson and berlin for me and the team here. thank you so much for joining us with . ah, with
