dangers and death. 3 years that wouldn't change the world forever. my jillions journey around the world, starting september 7th on d. w. with. ah, ah, this is dw, live from berlin as an unprecedented crowd hits europe. the continents mighty rivers are drying up. effects of record breaking heat reveal how much europe depends on its waterways for trade and for energy transport on the rhine river, germany is key shipping artery is now at risk of grinding to

a halt. also on the program, kenya declares it's next present, but the battle may not be over. will the brutal winsted tightly contest the grace but several election officials say they will not stand by the result. ah, i'm good. how both as well come to the program. a summer of record breaking heat is drying up rivers. across europe, around half of the continent is facing an unprecedented drought. now, shipping companies in germany are preparing for the worst. as water levels on the river rind dropped to critical levels. authorities say many vessels will be unable to navigate the t shipping route. if levels drop much further, scientists want that climate change will lead to even more frequent periods of

extreme heat and drought. the ws samantha baker is covering the story for us from the banks of the river. i'm in cologne and earlier we asked her about the water levels where she is the water levels here are extremely low. as you can see, i'm standing in what is this river bed here? pretty close to the middle of the river. just a few weeks ago, i would have been under water at this point. so the river has sunk very low. it's quickly approaching its lowest record levels, which was the last a last hit, a record in 2018. so here in cologne, it's getting pretty close to breaking that record again. and this is a problem for ships moving up and down this river which carry most of germany's goods. and if the water isn't a meter and a half high, they're not able to go up and down and they have to lighten their loads lightened.
11:03 am
how much cargo they're carrying down to even 25 percent. so this is, this is having knock on effects for those companies trying to ship up and down the river. now normally the water levels are only begin to drop this time of year. what has caused the river to dry up so early? well, climate change is definitely having an effect, or we know drought is intensified by climate change both in terms of how frequently it happens and how severe it can be. so this summer we've seen at very little rainfall in recent weeks, and these prolonged periods of high temperature is which is leading to this drought and being made worse by a climate change. so yes, normally the low point comes in october and we still have quite a ways to go in this season. so it could get considerably lower yet. so you've mentioned shipping, there are the companies that are saying that it may come to
11:04 am
a standstill a very soon. what kind of economic impact would that have? they would have huge economic impacts on these companies that they're already dealing with delays and shipping their goods. and that increasing prices for those goods. so back in 2018 when they did have to stop shipping, that affected the german economy by point 4 percent of g d p. so companies are a bit better prepared this time and then in the past, because they do have that 2018 to look back to and to plan accordingly. but you know, it's still a concern for this year that that could really hit companies. now rivers across europe, a similar to the ride on drying off and how is that being linked to climate change? yes, so we've seen rivers across europe, the danube that the why and france,
11:05 am
the po and italy all having these really low water levels. again that, that drought is just more intense due to climate change. so it means these rivers are getting less rainfall to fill them up and it's very hot for the waters evaporating more quickly and that is leading to them to sink quicker and quicker across the continent. thank you very much. the w samantha baker, the banks of the river, i'm in cologne. those low water levels across europe also making it harder to cool power stations and france, it's creating a particular headache for the countries nuclear power industry. nuclear reactors produce around 70 percent of the country's park. and many of those reactors depend on huge quantities of water from nearby rivers to cool them down strict rules or am to protect aquatic life, govern how much hot water can be released downstream. but due to frances current

energy crunch, many nuclear stations have received special permits to keep running something that's making environmentalists for it. to w lisa lewis reports now from southwestern france. france has been baking and temperatures of up to 40 degrees for months. now. that is putting french nuclear plants under strain authorities having to bend the rules for about a 5th of them just to keep them running. usually a nuclear power plant operators are only allowed to discharge their cooling water into rivers like they're gone. if the rivers temperature is under a certain limit, that is to protect the local flora and fauna county, though authorities have suspended that rule at certain reactors like the goldfish blonde here behind me, they say it's the only way to guarantee francis power supply more for the lower or

unable one photo, but these environmental activists are outraged that rules are being suspended for nuclear power plants. when river systems are already under stress in the heat and drought, he norman, warmness, or ball. they say, warming them up even more is disastrous. see that the $44.00 so it's a catastrophe for plants and fish it. some of them die which has ripple effects throughout the whole food chain with fuels. when for example, there are no micro algo certain small fish die that are normally food for bigger fish or plus warmer water contains more bacteria in order to make it potable, we have to add a lot of chemicals, which people then drinking thought fall under the ring but with half of all reactors close for maintenance, france desperately needs the ones that are running to keep going. power company f,

which declined our request for an interview, has called the situation extraordinary. and yet, the current issues don't seem to be an existential problem for french nuclear power . the government is about to nationalize e d f and plans to build new reactors. this energy expert says, betting heavily on nuclear for energy is not a good strategy, especially in the short run. a little doing a bother to show his were immediate war levels. new nuclear plants can't be commissioned in the short term, as their technology is not ready yet, the renewables a different. they have become cheaper and cheaper over the past few years and could be deployed immediately across the country. a shouted a lot more fell. oh, it don't care, belmont, and if you i am r e media. neighboring countries will be watching closely until now. france has been europe's biggest net energy exporter this year,
