ah ah ah ah ah, this is dw news alive from berlin. doctors concerned for the health of britons. queen elizabeth buckingham palace has been 96 year old monarch is under medical supervision. members of the royal family, hurry to be by her sight. also coming up on the show, a renewed commitment to long term help for ukraine. we will work together to train ukraine forces for the long hope western allies meet in germany to plan lasting
5:01 pm
support for kiff. ah hello, i'm claire richardson, a warm welcome to the show. we begin with concerns for the health of britons. queen elizabeth buckingham palace says the 96 year old monarch is under medical supervision at bell moral her home in scotland. the statement says the queen is comfortable, but without going into detail, british media or reporting that all 4 of her children are with her, including the air to the throne. prince charles, the queen, celebrated her platinum jubilee marking 7 decades of her reign earlier this year. but has increasingly handed over duties to family members and the speaker of the british parliament interrupted a debate to express lawmakers concerns. i will say something about the noise from
5:02 pm
which is just be made about her majesty. i know i speak on behalf of the entire house when i say that we send over the best wishes to her majesty the queen. and that she and the ro family are not thoughts and prayers. at this moment, i'm going to take no more just to if there is anything else we will call him. thank you. about best wishes there from the british parliament to the queen. let's get more on this from our correspondent burg martha. joining me from london and alex forest whiting who covers you k politics share with me in the studio. thank you both burger. i actually want to start with you. it is quite rare for buckingham palace to comment on the queen's health. so there must be quite a bit of concern, wasn't there? definitely every one is taking this really, really seriously, because normally as you said, there is not much commentary on the queen's health. it was announced earlier in the year that she had contracted covey, but that was really, it does not like her something like
5:03 pm
a running commentary of how she's getting better or worse or anything like that. so for these doctors and for buckingham palace to say that they're seriously concerned about her. definitely it's, it's something where we were, the whole country will really be holding its breath because it really hasn't, hasn't happened in that form before. that there was, you know, the moment where, where the people were fearing that really something serious has happened to her because she's always been around. she's always been on duty and she's met so many people over the years. and, and, and people are, frankly, just used to her being there for everyone. and alex, what are we to make of the kind of language that we're hearing buckingham palace telling us the queen is comfortable. i'm using phrases like medical supervision and cause for concern. what do you make of it? i mean it's, it is extraordinary. it's not what buckingham palace normally does, which shows how serious this is. and that obviously the
5:04 pm
fact that or have family, the queen's family are either at bar morrow or on their way to by morrow is a very, very significant sign. that this is a very serious situation. a very somber mood among, obviously the role of family, but actually the whole of the u. k. as people are waiting to find out how the queen is and buckingham palace, to have released a statement like this. just telling the world that doctor is also concerned for her majesty's health is very significant. i mean they've added that she is comfortable and remains at by a moral. and we can assume that they have all the doctors and medical care in place of moral while she is. so i'm well, but nobody, nobody can, can say what happens next. and it is a waiting game as we wait to find out whether buckingham palace will release more
5:05 pm
information on the queen's health. and when they do what, what it will actually mean alex, is it significant that the queen is at fault moral instead of at buckingham palace right now? absolutely. because she should have been in buckingham palace greeting the latest prime minister who is serving under her that live trust. so what happened instead that was that she was still in the north of scotland im embalmed moral boris johnson. the outgoing british prime minister, number 14, under the queen's rain, had to go to balmoral to say his farewells to the monarch and then list trust flew in to take up her role as the next number 15th, a british prime minister, very unusual. that would always and has always happened to buckingham palace under queen elizabeth's rain. so i think that that with a very, very strong sign earlier this week, that obviously her health has been a problem. and of course, we have known that she has had problems with her mobility. the palace has said that
5:06 pm
over the past few months, but they have not said anything more. of course, that transfer of power between boris johnson to live trust was just 2 days ago. a burger with, as we've said, family members rushing to be by her side at this point. do we know who is there next to her? well, from what's been reported is that there is a flame that has only just landed a few minutes ago. members of the royal family are supposed to have been on board and it's been reported that all the queen's children are either with her or on the way to her, but also her grandchildren. so prince william is, was on his way to scotland earlier today. even his brother harry and his wife makin was coincidentally in the u. k for some, some engagements they've had, they also on their way to scotland and,
5:07 pm
and that really does show that i'm not just, i'm not just the media but, but for sure the, the royal family is taking this very seriously indeed. and alex, what you make of that fact that prince harry and his wife megan, are also on their way to see the queen. and it's no secret that at least publicly they've had appeared to have a rather difficult relationship over the past few years. absolutely. it's very significant as, as big it says they have been, they were in the u. k for some ceremonial roles within themselves because obviously they're no longer they, they are not allowed to take part in official royal roles anymore. we've got pictures of them here and i think this was the naturally in dusseldorf, in germany earlier this week where they were also are promoting the victim games. now the invictus games is prince. harry's brain child is while the light, the paralympics. but it's to help us, our service men and women who've been injured and former veterans who've been injured in war or with the military and encouraged them. so he happened to be in
5:08 pm
europe and now obviously back in the u. k. and on his way on their way to bar morrow, and it is significant because it is no secret that they have been very strained relations between megan prince harry's wife and the royal family. in particular, since they've had to step away from their royal duties. and they had moved to california. okay, thank you very much for that. alex forest whiting with me in the studio and berg at mass for us in london. appreciate your time both of you. let's move on to some other news now, and the united states and its allies have announced a host of new military hardware to be sent to ukraine after meeting at the round shine air base in germany. us defense secretary lloyd austin's at washington was sending more ammunition for ukraine's high mar rocket systems, how it serves an armored ambulances. earlier in the day secretary austin announced that washington had dedicated some $675000000.00 in extra military aid for kiff.
5:09 pm
now, our group force and the rest defense secretary said ukraine could count on america's enduring support. ukraine is fighting for its life. it's fighting for sure. it's sovereign territory and it's democracy and it's freedom. but the stikes reach far beyond the front lines. they reach us all, but members of this conflict group aren't just helping the firm. ukraine are hoping to the firm rules based international order that emerge africa, hers on the 2nd world war. and for the past 70 years, that rate based order which made the world more secure, more stable. ready more free and more prosperous. so united states will continue to stay in with ukraine today. and tomorrow. i'd like to bring in at home us v goals, a journalist who specializes in defense and security affairs. thanks for taking the
5:10 pm
time. what is your main take away from today's meeting of the ukraine defense contact group? actually, vis takeaway is twofold. today. once in the u. s. and its allies are committed to a long time support for ukraine, which also means they don't expect the war to end in short notice in the next month . and the 2nd one is still, there has been announcements today of new alms deliveries. but these are more of the same, it's all kids, it's high miles, it's hom rocket. but it's not the completely change. the ukraine is still hoping for. ukraine is asking for main battle tanks for infant 352 vehicles. so far, no western nation seems to be willing to provide those. so is it safe to say that the ukrainian government won't be very happy with the results of this meeting at ramstein? well, i'm not sure about that. the. on the other hand, of course,
5:11 pm
ukraine is getting a lot of on them and not only from the west, germany, and the netherlands, and all the support for d mining to deal with i. d 's and pros, explosive devices to train the mining in germany. norway has off hotel, fire, massage, and so on and so on. so various support but not the change. i think you credit is helping for now. well, the us defense secretary was in germany meeting with allies, u. s. secretary of state antony blank and made a surprise visit to here where he promised more money and not just for ukraine, pending congressional approval. we're looking at about $1000000000.00 to go to countries, including the baltic, states, albania, and georgia. and more. what is the goal with that funding? well indeed, ukraine is getting 1000000000 and the other countries are 1000000000 as well as
5:12 pm
other countries who consider themselves of the 2nd front line against rock. and those smaller and possibly poorer countries have to spend a lot of money and money on their defense, and they're coming to the limits. it is a small baltic states have raised their defense spending enormously. and if they want to continue a bad part, they need additional money. and my impression is that the u. s. is willing to do support is money. and what does that tell us about the direction that the war and ukraine is headed? well, i think a warranty credit is headed for long term war of attrition, which seems to be the case ukraine announced today if they are making success in their counter offensive, 50 kilometers into russian, occupied territory. 700 square kilometers liberated as they say. but still,
5:13 pm
this is only a minor achievement, giving the whole size of this war. it will take a long time until if ever those goals can be achieved. and can you tell us more about those counter offensive? are particularly in the south of ukraine. well, the ukraine is pretty reluctant to give detailed sir, earn your creamy and general today was the most forthcoming. when you said those facts about 50 kilometers, the been 700 square kilometers. we still don't know really what ukraine over ukrainian troops have been able to do. obviously they're having success in the south also in the north, around khaki. but the details remain pretty sketchy at this point in time. journalist thomas, because i want to thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us on detail eunice. thank you. and meanwhile,
5:14 pm
the united states says it has evidence that up to 1600000 ukrainians have been forcibly taken to russia or russian held territory. finding backs up ukraine's longstanding claims about, forced to deportations. united nations also says unaccompanied ukrainian children have been taken across the border to be adopted in russia in may this year evacuated, residents, flea, the besieged city of merrier pole. the u. s. now says it has evidence that some evacuated from mary paul and other occupied areas, as well as many people who stayed behind have been forcibly deported to russia or russian held territories in the united nations security council session. the u. s. ambassador to the u. n. said up to 1600000 ukrainians have been detained, interrogated and forcibly deported. the experience is different for every one,
5:15 pm
depending on how threatening may are perceived to be toward russia's invasion. and some are allowed to remain in russian occupied parts of ukraine, summer, forcibly deported to russia, and some are sent to prison. and some simply vanish. the u. s. says officials from the russian government, a, coordinating the deportations, but moscow dismissed the claims and said these ukrainians have voluntarily moved to russia. good lawyer, it's a new milestone on the disinformation campaign unleashed by ukraine and its western bacchus against our country, federal un human rights officials say there are also credible allegations of unaccompanied ukrainian children taken by force across the border. we are concerned that the rational authorities have adopted a simplified procedure to grant ration citizenship to children without parental care. and that these children would be eligible for adoption i, russian families. the u. s. estimates. thousands of children have been taken from
5:16 pm
their families or orphanages. the deportations part of what some western diplomats coal a campaign to change, the very demographic of ukraine. we can bring up to speed. now with some other world news headlines, the european central bank has raised its key interest rate by an unprecedented 3 quarters of one percent. it's the 2nd time the e. c. v has raised rates this year to tackle soaring inflation in the euro currency area on policy rate, south korean president you and so q all has declared special disaster zones in to cities hit by a powerful typhoon. the regions will be eligible for tax breaks and subsidies. the storm has killed 10 people and caused a wide spread damage. police in canada say the 2nd suspect in a stabbing attack has died after he was arrested. the suspects brother also thought to have been involved in the attack was found dead on monday. 10 people were killed

and 18 injured in the master, stabbing in saskatchewan province, and thousands have taken to the streets in haiti demand a better living conditions. their calling on a prime minister arial on v to resign over runaway inflation. a severe fuel shortage and rising gang violence and the european parliament has launched an inquiry into whether e u government's misused spyware against political opponents. the alleged surveillance came to light a year ago, but as d w's. terry shows reports the investigation is not being widely welcomed. there's a scandal unfolding in europe that some say will make water gates wiretapping. look tame by comparison, is murky, is ugly. it's shady european union. governments are alleged to have been spying on their own citizens, opposition, politicians, journalists, e lawmakers to blackmail them, manipulate them,
5:18 pm
intimidate them. the surveillance was uncovered more than a year ago by a consortium of journalists and n g o's, called the pegasus project for european parliament set up an investigative committee to dig deeper. you parliamentarian sophie intervals says what they're finding is frightening. there is a kind of market where semi under world figures, selling this stuff are meeting people, you know, are a government representatives or people who have been asked by the government. you know, it's the greek government admits hacking the phones of a journalist and a member of the european parliament saying it may have been wrong, but it was legal. that's one of the big problems for those who want to expose and eliminate such practices. some of the people whose approval would be needed to change the laws are the ones making use of the surveillance. even when it was found at the youth, justice commissioner and staff were targeted by the spyware. the commission declined to investigate, saying it's up to individual government. there had been public protests against the
5:19 pm
surveillance in some countries such as hungary, where journalist phones were hacked. but the rage among you politicians is muted. other than in the european parliament where multiple members have been targeted, i was expecting quite some outcry about what happened. but what do we have the commission is here with neither the commissioner attack nor the commissioner in charge the council. they don't even bother sewing up for intervals, says the european police agency euro poor was not enthusiastic about her recommendation to launch an investigation. so she intends to follow up with a formal request. it's squarely within their mandate. if it is a cross border, they that they do have to powers to intervene even when it concerns only one member state. but it has an impact on the common interest of european union. so they have to act and they're not. intervals says she knows exposing excesses won't stop the use of surveillance software, but she hopes to curb it's abuse. and millions of people affected by
