ah ah ah ah ah, this is dw news alive or from berlin. doctor is concerned for the help of britons. queen elizabeth buckingham palace has been 96 year old monarch is under medical supervision. the members of the royal family rush to be by her side. also coming up on the show, western leaders promised long term military help for ukraine. hundreds of millions
6:01 pm
of $1.00 and $8.00 includes heavy weaponry and ukraine's neighbors also receive assistance. ah hello, i am clare richardson. thank you so much for joining us. we begin with concerns for the health of britons. queen elizabeth buckingham palace says the 96 year old monarch is under medical supervision at balmoral her home in scotland. the statement says the queen is comfortable without going into detail. no british media reporting that all 4 of her children are with her, including the air to the throne. prince charles, the queen, celebrated her platinum jubilee marking 7 decades of her reign earlier this year, but has increasingly handed over duties to family. members. of the speaker of the british parliament interrupted a debate to express lawmakers concerns i wish say something about good nourishment,
6:02 pm
which is just be made about her majesty. i know i speak on behalf of the entire hers. when i say that we send her of us best wishes to have my, just to the queen that she and the ro family are in our thoughts and prayers of this mold. i'm going to take no more just to if there is anything else we looked at large called him. thank you. so best wishes from parliament there. let's get more on this with des, alex forest whiting here with me in the studio. and carl, an asthma reporting from a rainy london, a carl, i'd like to start with you. it is unusual for buckingham palace to comment on the queen's health. so they must be quite worried. it is unusual and i think that's one of the reasons why so many people are showing up today despite the rain to buckingham palace and people across the country are expressing their concern. this really is a rare state and we do not get very often statements, updating the public on the queen's health and definitely the wording in there. i
6:03 pm
mean, if you want to read between the lines, those are the words, medical supervision and, and, and cause for concern. those are certainly things that should be taken seriously. this is the country that, that i don't want to say it's been on edge but has been racing itself. the queen is 96 years old. we had that big platinum jubilee celebration this summer. and you saw so many people come out to show their love and their support for the clean and we're seeing that same thing today. she's been such a constant part of people's lives here. 70 years on the throne. now at 96 years of age, every one at least here in london is waiting for more information. we may not get that today. we're not sure, but it certainly is a rare statement coming from the royal family. and alex, what do you think those terms that carl mentioned medical supervision cause for concern? what are we to make of those? absolutely. we do not get those kind of statements coming out of buckingham palace on. they absolutely do not rank, they say do not release. so i agree with tal,
6:04 pm
it's very, very serious, so serious that as you have already said, the queen's own children are either by her bed bedside or are approaching balmoral and also her grandchildren too. so they are all gathering the queen overseas still inbound morrow. and we have to assume that was because of her ill health because she should of course, have been back in buckingham palace after spending the summer at bar morrow, but it's not, has obviously not returned. we do know that she's had mobility problems in the past that has been made clear when the queen was unable to attend certain events. for example, the picture behind us is the queen at the state opening of parliament, but not this year or where she should have been. but actually last year, this year it was her son, prince charles, who had to do it because she was unable to we assume because she wasn't well enough . that news has it traveled fast or sounds like a lot of cause for concern. i wonder if we can get some reaction from the public in
6:05 pm
the u. k. hey, lisa, i get well soon. i wish she recovers and i hold the family all that they navigate through this difficult period together, united the find peace in whatever happened. she's it, i'm very good hale and i just wish you and obeys in pain you know, carry on through what she's very and when she enjoys doing it. she's, she's been the queen as long as i've been alive. she's being the queen, as long as my parents have been alive. so she's really a very, very important part of the fabric. you know, it's going to be terrible. i was very sad. i think she's a very special queen. i think everybody around the world knows her and even in israel, and i wish for her health and hopefully she'll always be there. i hope she, well, she recovers care well soon. it's lovely. well wish as
6:06 pm
a poor queen elizabeth corley, when i come back to you, what have people you've been talking to said yeah, or there are just big crowds, your gallery in front of buckingham powers. although of course, most people know she's not actually here, but right around the time when, when officers officers were getting out of people were leaving work. we saw the number of people behind us really started to grow. of course the rain came down pretty hard, but i was speaking with a couple of people just came over to, to talk with us. and they were actually from france and, you know, france and england are having a politically tough times right now. but the 2 were here to wish the queen. well, they said that everyone in france was also talking about the queen's conditioning. londoners, englanders, everybody in the, you k, this is the only thing that they're talking about in the taxi on the way here are we were having discussion about the queen's health as well. and like i mentioned, she's 96 and everybody knows what that can mean. that health can turn at
6:07 pm
a moment. so this is definitely country that is on watch and waiting for the next update. the queen is up at her home in scotland. alex, you mentioned that the family are rushing there to be by her bedside. i'm. can you tell us exactly who's there where we know that i'm prince charles and i'm his wife camilla are on their way and have arrived. and also the queen's daughter, princess anne, and the be heard that all so other 2 children, prince andrew and prince edward and her grandson a prince. william were also arriving together on a plane. we can see the plain now, and that's it. arriving at aberdeen airport, and i guess it's a short, fairly short drive to bow merrill castle. what is interesting is what happens to prince harry now prince harry is prince william's brother. if you remember, he is married to megan and the duke and the duchess of sussex. as they are called, were lost, all their patronage is and royal duties because they moved to california in the us,
6:08 pm
but they have been are over in europe, in the u. k. and here in these pictures actually of doff in germany on various visits, this is for the invictus games, which is going to be held in dusseldorf next year. and which i'm prince harry has set up. and there has been talk about the 2 of them traveling to bar morrow. well, we now understand according to the press association that prince harry is going to trouble on his own. and so without his wife megan, there has been a lot of friction. i think it's fair to say between her and the royal family, and i guess the royal family can say, look up, prince william's wife. kate has not come. so therefore we do not think it's appropriate for megan to come either. and that perhaps just will make things a big a bit easier in terms of um, how the royals will gel over this very difficult time with the queen's help. i'm surely sure many were wondering exactly that. thanks, alex,
6:09 pm
a coral back to you. queen elizabeth he's, she's been a symbol of stability through 15 prime ministers. so many changes in the united kingdom. now though, the country is facing a number of serious challenges as an ad. yeah, i mean isn't that amazing that every one's been able to look to the queen as this source of stability and strength and duty in the country. 15 prime ministers dating all the way back to winston churchill. and even as a child, she was there, guiding the country, were helping to during world war 2. now this is definitely a country that's facing all kinds of political challenges. you have inflation reaching the double figures on every one struggling with high energy bills that were predicted to reach as high as 5 or $6000.00 pounds per year until a prime minister liz trust announced her energy plan earlier today. so the effects of breck sit, the n a chest, the national health care system here, has been under extreme strain since the pandemic, which of course was,
6:10 pm
had all kinds of problems associated with it as well. so the u. k and especially england are going through a tough time. it's fair to say, and the queen is always been there. and we saw a great brief moment where we could all forget about the political turmoil with former prime minister boris johnson during the platinum jubilee celebrations. and all along here was packed with people celebrating the clean and she's just been parts of this nation's identity for so long and in speaking with people here today i'm i know that they don't know how to imagine the u. k. without her. and certainly these are shoes that no one will be able to fill column asthma, reporting from london and alex forest whiting. here with me in the studio, i want to thank you both so much for your time. well, the united states and its allies have announced a host of new military hardware to be sent to ukraine after meeting at the ramstein air base. here in germany, us defense secretary lloyd austin said washington was sending war ammunition for
6:11 pm
ukraine. high mars rocket systems, howitzers and armored ambulances. earlier in the day, secretary austin and out at washington had dedicated some $675000000.00. an extra military aid for kids 1st came together 4 months ago and ukraine's allies, their stressing that they're in it for the long haul. i earlier asked defensive journalist at thomas a vehicle what stood out to him in today's meeting of the ukraine defense contact group. actually this takeaways twofold, today ones is that the u. s. and its allies are committed to a long time support for ukraine, which also means they don't expect the war to end in short notice in the next months. and the 2nd one is still, there has been announcements to day of new alms deliveries, but these are more of the same. it's raw kids, it's high miles, it's hom records. but it's not that you completely change the ukraine is still
6:12 pm
hoping for. ukraine is asking for main battle tanks for infant 352 vehicles. so far, no western nation seems to be willing to provide those. so is it safe to say that the ukranian government won't be very happy with the results of this meeting at ramstein? well, i'm not sure about that. on the other hand, of course, ukraine is getting a lot of on them and not only from the west germany and the netherlands, and to support for d mining to deal with i. d 's and pros, explosive devices. and to, to train the mining in germany in all way heads off, hotels, fire massage, and so on and so on. so very support. not the change i think you created is hoping for now. well, the us defense secretary was in germany meeting with allies u. s. secretary of state antony blank and made
6:13 pm
a surprise visit to here where he promised more money and not just for ukraine, pending congressional approval. we're looking at about $1000000000.00 to go to countries, including the baltic, states, albania, and georgia. and more. what is the goal with that funding? well indeed, ukraine is getting 1000000000 and the other countries the 1000000000 as well as other countries who consider themselves of the 2nd front line against rocca. and those smaller and possibly poorer countries have spent a lot of money in the month on their defense. and they're coming to the limits. it is a small baltic states have raised their defense spending enormously. and if they want to continue a bad part, they need additional money. and my impression is that the u. s. is willing to do support as money. and what does that tell us about the direction that the war in ukraine is headed? well, i think
6:14 pm
a bore new credit is headed for long term war of attrition, which seems to be the case ukraine announced today if they are making success in their counter offensive, 50 kilometers into russian, occupied territory. 700 square kilometers liberated as i say. but still, this is only a minor achievement, giving the whole size of this war. it will take a long time until if ever those goals can be achieved. and can you tell us more about those counter offensive? are particularly in the south of ukraine. well, ukraine is pretty reluctant to give detailed, so are you creamy in general? today? was the most forthcoming. when you said those facts about 50 kilometers, the been 700 square kilometers. we still don't know really what ukraine of
6:15 pm
ukrainian troops have been able to do. obviously they're having success in the south also in the north, around khaki. but the details remain pretty sketchy at this point in time. journalist thomas, me go them are thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us on d w. thank you. i mean, while the united states says it has evidence that up to 1600000 ukrainians have been forcibly taken to russia or russian held territory. finding backs up ukraine's longstanding claims about force to deportations. united nations also says unaccompanied ukrainian children have been taken across the border to be adopted in russia in may this year evacuated, residents play the besieged city of mario paul. the u. s. now says it has evidence that some evacuated from mario paul and other occupied areas, as well as many people who stayed behind,
6:16 pm
have been forcibly deported to russia or russian held territories. any united nations security council session, the u. s. ambassador to the u. n said up to 1600000 ukrainians have been detained, interrogated and forcibly deported. the experience is different for every one, depending on how threatening they are perceived to be toward russia's invasion. and some are allowed to remain in russian occupied parts of ukraine, summer, forcibly deported to russia, and some are sent to prison. and some simply vanish. the u. s. says officials from the russian government, a, coordinating the deportations, but moscow dismissed the claims and said these ukrainians have voluntarily moved to russia. good lawyer. it's a new milestone on the disinformation campaign unleashed by ukraine and its western bacchus against our country that are un human rights. officials say there are also
6:17 pm
credible allegations of unaccompanied ukrainian children taken by force across the border. we are concerned that the rational authorities have adopted a simplified procedure to grant ration citizenship to children without our until care and that these children would be eligible for adoption i, russian families. the u. s. estimates. thousands of children have been taken from their families or orphanages. the deportations pause of what some western diplomats coal a tam pane to change the very demographic of ukraine. and germany has begun. deploying more soldiers to lithuania, as part of nato's move to boost defense of its eastern borders. roches invasion of ukraine has rattled nerves throughout the formerly occupied baltic states. lithuania, which is a nato member, shares a 270 kilometer border with russia and fears russian aggression. if the war spreads beyond ukraine, t w's korean via has more. ah,
6:18 pm
rolling off the boat into nato's most vulnerable region staff. sergeant max, whose last name we've been asked not to give, is providing security for the bonus veils new forward command element. in lithuania, it's the headquarters of a german combat brigade with up to 2500 soldiers. the soldiers that berlin is deploying to lithuania to bolster nato's eastern flank, are a direct reaction to russia's war of aggression against ukraine. max is a deputy squad leader on this armored personnel carrier, part of one of germany's armored infantry brigades for mr. learned of i know, but i think it's important because want to protect what we have. yom gardens. i'm not protect our country window. and now that i been in the army for some time, come, i also to fight with my brothers and arms and keep my men safely. men, angelina, ingual, quincy, nothing with the soldiers are also here for lithuania,
6:19 pm
as collective defense, which is how nato calls it. vilnius, along with the other baltic states, had been calling for more troops. and in june german chancellor, olaf schwartz granted their request, an additional combat brigade on top of the $1600.00 soldiers that are already there . but there's a catch out of the convoy traveling down this highway, only the command element comprised of around 50 soldiers will be stationed here permanently. the bulk of the troops will remain in germany on high readiness and can deploy quickly on short notice. cone us lithuania is 2nd largest city is only a half an hour's drive from the base where german troops are stationed. people here are largely happy that more soldiers are coming. it's excellent. with security, i feel to be honest. it's know that term in the army came to little ania or so
6:20 pm
goodness to the most important thing is that russia doesn't even think about taking any aggressive steps towards nato, all it delaney shermer, sort on them out to ensure that max and his men are armed with some of the most modern equipment in the german military, they say they are well trained and ready to go to war. if they must driven it from. i think it's good to we hear. all right. i think it's good to is a show of force along nato's border model. and you also see the reaction from the locals that he feels good. what is the job i signed up to do? and that's why i'm happy to be here. a few more moments, news oversight after accompanying the brigades combat headquarters to lithuania max and his comrades will go back home. but not for long. in october,
6:21 pm
they will return for their combat exercises with the lithuanian military. let's bring up to speed now, with some other world news headlines, the european central bank has raised its key interest rate by an unprecedented 3 quarters of one percent. it's the 2nd time the sep, has raised rates this year to tackle soaring inflation in the euro currency area. first step on it will south korean president units. so q all has declared special disaster zones in to cities hit by a powerful typhoon. the regions will be eligible for tax breaks and subsidies. the storm has killed 10 people and caused widespread damage. police in canada say a 2nd suspect in a mass stopping has died after being arrested. the mans brother is also thought to have been involved and was found dead earlier. 10 people were killed in the attack in saskatchewan province. in thousands of taken to the street in haiti to demand better living conditions,
