country, the realms and the commonwealth, and by countless people around the world during this period of morning and change my family and i will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the queen was so widely held. and as we know, she was so widely held as big it has been talking, as we've just heard, liz trust, the new british prime minister saying, saying that she was a personal inspiration. and i think that's fair to say that the queen inspired generations, and particularly from her sense of duty, prince charles releasing a statement like this. it must be a very difficult time for him that the queen was his mother. you forget the fact that he is now king. the queen was his mother. he knew that this moment would always come. but she reached such
8:16 pm
a majestic age of 96. and he now has to step into those shoes and trying to lead not just the u. k, but also many countries where the queen was head of state as well. and he has to try to keep it all together and show that he obviously has great respect for his mother and for her memory. but that he now has to leave the monarchy forward. and into the future, make sure that it is fit for the 21st century. there must be some comfort to his majesty king charles the 3rd, that at least his mother passed away in the company of many members of the royal family who were able to make it to scotland to see her go. can you tell us a little bit more about who was by her side in that moment? absolutely. so we know that today has been a day where the members of the role of family have been trying to get to bar moral as quickly as possible. you have to understand that bar morrow is in the very north of scotland and they were travelling mostly from the south, from,
8:17 pm
from london in england. so they had to get there. they, some of them flew by plane. they included 2 of her sons, prince andrew, and prince edward, and prince edwards, edward's wife sophie the duchess of wessex. and also the queen's grandson. a prince william who is king charles his son, whose, which means that prince william will now be next in line to the throne. we know also that king charles was already moral. so was his sister princess, and now the one person who we know was trying to make it in time with prince harry that the prince, william's brother and king charles is 2nd son. he lives in california. and there have been a difficult relations between him and his wife, a megan with the rest of the royal family. and they stepped back from royal duties, but they happened to be in europe. so both in the u. k. and in fact,
8:18 pm
in germany this week. so he was trying to get to bomb out to see his grandmother before she passed away. i don't think he got there in time i'm. i may be corrected on that, but i don't think he got there on time. so i mentioned that must be very difficult for prince harry, but i imagined that the other children and, and certainly prince william who did manage to see we, we're seeing the queen before she died. we'll be very grateful that at least they could be at bar morrow on this day. thank you for that. if you're just joining us, we are having special coverage here on d. w. news. a britain's queen elizabeth. the 2nd has died at the age of 96. she was the longest reigning monarch and head of state in the world. and i get across to our correspondent in london, bergen master for more on us bergen. britain is going to be entering a period of morning. can you tell us a little bit more about what we can expect in the days ahead
8:19 pm
expect in the next 10 days that this is going to be a period of morning. so the, the, the operation is called our london bridge, which is so basically the code name for water is, is happening, and in the event of the death of the queen. now this is slightly different because the queen has died and scotland, but we expect her body to be going in over to edinburgh where there will she will be in holy road. paris were pet people will be able to give their respects, pay their respects. but then, or within the next days, she will, she will, the body will then be transferred to london and there will be a book of condolences many, many people will be flogging to london and will be trying to see her in westminster
8:20 pm
abbey. that is the understanding where they will be able to, to pay their respects. and then there will be the funeral in 10 days. we also are expecting that there will be some sort of pink holiday, which will be a day of morning and, and what we are expecting fairly soon. this is a speech by the new king, by, by king charles not prince charles any more. but now king charles will of course be bringing at to you as it occurs. welcome back to alex forest whiting in the studio . alex, our condolences whoring and can you tell us some of the reactions that we've heard from around the world? yes. so we've already heard, i'm a statement from king charles, released by the royal family on where he talked about the morning of he said that he and the family a feeling we also heard from british prime minister list trust, who hailed m quitters at the 2nd as the very spirit of great britain and the rock
8:21 pm
on which modern britain was built. and so we've heard from both of them and we are expecting king charles to make a statement, a broadcast to the nation and to the world later this evening. we've also heard on twitter on social media, various heads of state have also expressed their sorrow over the death of queen elizabeth the 2nd. so for example, we have the french president manuel micron. who said, her majesty, queen elizabeth, the 2nd embodied the british nation's continuity, and unity for over 70 years. i remember her as a friend of france, a kind hearted queen who has left a lasting impression on her country and her century. we've also heard from the german president frank volter shine. maya, who said queen elizabeth, the 2nd is
8:22 pm
a woman who has written history and there are many others coming in to for example, we've had from the israeli prime minister lapierre. we've had the committee, a canadian prime minister, just intruder. remember that the queen was also the head of state of canada, and he said it is with the heaviest of hearts that we've learned of her passing. so i think we will just throughout the next few days, we will hear condolences. we will hear people who knew her well, people who knew her a little bit and people who didn't know her, but to feel very very i felt very, very attached to queen elizabeth the 2nd a woman who was on the throne for 70 years, 7 decades thing the world changed enormously a wet when she ascended the throne. they were still the british empire. she ascended the throne even before the 2nd world war. and it is quite extraordinary
8:23 pm
that this woman was able to carry out. i chew cheese and have this sense of duty right up until the very end. even on tuesday, a welcoming the new british prime minister list trust and saying good bye to the former prime minister boris johnson. alex 1st waiting in the studio and burgomaster in london. thank you both so much. if you're just joining us, queen i was with the 2nd has died at the age of 96. i wanna see if we can take a look back on her life and legacy o no british monarch reigned for as long as queen elizabeth the 2nd. ah, she was a constant in time of dramatic change. ah, all was disciplined. always dutiful. a life of public service. right? until the end. in 1926,
8:24 pm
elizabeth came into the world. she was not born to be queen, but when her uncle king edward the 8th advocated after less than a year on the throne, elizabeth father was crowned king. his daughter suddenly became the crown princess . she accepted the task and took it seriously. even in her youth, i did have before you all the high high, whether it be no short shall be diverted to your service and to the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong. during world war 2, elizabeth did her military service as a mechanic after the war. she married naval officer, philip mount patton, her great love, ah, one year later, prince charles was born. the 1st of 4 children. ah, in february 952, her father, king george,

the 6th died. elizabeth replaced him while on a trip to africa. the tragic news reached princess elizabeth and her husband, while in kenya and the new queen left immediately london. elizabeth, the 2nd was only 25 years of age. her carnation ceremony did not take place until the following year. in june, 1953. the ceremony itself was one of the 1st world events to be broadcast on television. an estimated 300000000 people who watched around the globe. the queen took the throne at a time when the british empire was losing its importance. many former colonies gained their independence while at the same time, a new global conflict began with the cold war. as queen elizabeth was not
8:26 pm
allowed to perceive her own political agenda, but she was the most important representative over the country and head of the commonwealth. 6 in that role, she tirelessly traveled the world in the decades that followed the ah ah, at home elizabeth was intent on boosting the royal family as popularity also with the help of the media. the spectacular wedding of her son charles to diana spencer in the summer of 1981 was the most watch tv broadcast the whole time. but when what appeared to be a perfect royal family life began to unravel?
8:27 pm
the tabloid press was merciless. in the 1990 s. the newspapers feasted on the royal affairs and divorces. charles and diana's marriage failed. and in 1997, diana died in a traffic accident. the worldwide outpouring of sympathy was overwhelming, but the royal family struggled to find sympathetic words. she was an exceptional and gifted human being in good times and bad. she never lost her capacity to smile and laugh. no others with her warmth, unkindness, ah, this was when the royal's popularity hidden all time low diana's son's princes william and harry did not talk about the trauma of their mother's death until years later. ah, when harry's marriage to us televisions to megan markov has repeatedly exploited by

the tabloids the couple made a radical exit. they officially turned their backs on the royal family. ultimately moving to the united states. there they complained in interviews about racism in the media. and also in the palace compared to the other members of the royal family, the queen let a quiet marriage. she was married to her childhood sweetheart, prince philip for 73 years. he was an important pillar of support for her, which made the moment of parting all the more difficult. ah, in the spring of 2021, philip died 1899. owing to the corona virus pandemic, the funeral took place with a very small circle of mourners. elizabeth was alone. it was an image that touched many but only a few days later,
8:29 pm
she was again representing the country, receiving ambassadors by a video conference, and participating in zoom meetings with scientists. and there's wonderful work you are all doing. said is great to see you all. but you say you must, you must be like, your majesty ah, in a world that has changed radically. elizabeth was a constant mainstay ah. committed to tradition, but not closed to the new and most of the critics of the british royal family paid tribute to the queen. for her long life in service to her country and to the commonwealth. you're watching a special edition of dw news with some breaking news. britain's queen elizabeth the 2nd has died at the age of 96. she was the longest reigning monarch and head of
8:30 pm
state in the world. her death means her son, charles charles succeeds her immediately. king charles called it a moment of the greatest sadness for himself and for all of the royal family, you can see there, even the american flag flying at half mast in the united states. the british prime minister, lead trust has said that queen elizabeth was the rock on which modern britain was built, that she touched the lives of millions around the worlds and certainly no understatement. let's get more on this from alex forest whiting in the studio and from our correspondent berrigan mass joining me from london burgess. can you tell us what the atmosphere is like there in london following the death of the queen? the people i've spoken to you. we're definitely seeing this is something that's lager it's, it's the, it's the beginning of a new era that the country is in,
8:31 pm
not an easy position. we are in a situation in the u. k. were many people have seen their wages full inflation as rise in going through the roof. we're facing an energy crisis like other european countries as well, which is the result of the war and ukraine. so already the country is really in a moment of, of transition and has just seen the new prime minister alice just being a inaugurated by the queen just 2 days ago. so it comes at a time when many british people would have most likely lay to have some continuity, which is what the queen has always represented. she was always there for people over the decades. and this is what many people, even if they were not outspoken royalist, or they have appreciated and how that she had this sense of duty. and i was just
8:32 pm
getting on and was being there as a role model for many people as, as the new p m prime minister, las dressers just said sue. so i think there will be hardly any one in the country who, who will not be touched by their passing off the queen, who to seeing the sun going down on this 8th of september. the day the queen of us . but the 2nd has died. i want to come back to you in the studio, alex and ask you what you think her legacy is going to be. what i really want to pick up on what big it was just saying about on the queen's extraordinary sense of duty. and the fact that she was on the throne for 7070 years, that 7 decades. and during that time and she had 15 british prime ministers and who served her from whence churchill he was born in the 19th century, right up to live truss who. she welcomed as prime minister only on tuesday,
8:33 pm
which just stresses the point about her sense of duty that even though she was clearly very on well, she put on a brave face and she saw said good bye to boris johnson, the outgoing british prime minister. and she welcome to the new british prime minister, a live trust. we saw just a photograph of her at the time where she was had a walking stick, but she still had a big smile on her face. and then just within the same week, 2 days later on it's announced that she has passed away. and um, i think it just goes to show that she never wanted to give up the job. she did not want to stop being the mac and she took it very, very seriously. and i think that is what she will be remembered for through, for generations to common certainly is big. it says that for people across the
8:34 pm
united kingdom, but i think it's further afield than just the united kingdom. i mean we have tributes that are coming in from across the world and from every corner of the world. remember, the queen was also had a state of 14 other states and countries apart from the united kingdom, and she was also a head of the commonwealth. the commonwealth, of course, is countries that were formerly parts of the british empire. when she came to the throne, the british empire even existed. she came to the throne even before world war 2. i mean it's so imaginable it before she, she came to the throne after the 2nd world war, but when everything was in flux, and it's just an extraordinary what she, what she has been through what she's seen and how life is changed. and shall i read you just some of the abuse that are coming in. i mean, they're coming in a year. let's hear what world's leaders are. there are so many are just gonna pick . pick a few, for example, the indian prime minister lorenzo mo, d. remember,
8:35 pm
india was, is part of the commonwealth. her majesty, queen elizabeth the 2nd will be remembered as a stalwart avant times. she provided inspiring leadership to her nation and people . she personified dignity and decency in public life. pained by her demise, my thoughts with her family and people of the u. k. in the sand. our we've got the canadian prime minister just intruder. the queen, of course, was head of state of canada. it is with the heaviest of hearts that we learned of the passing of canada's longest reigning sovereign. her majesty queen elizabeth the 2nd, she was a constant presence in our lives and her service to canadians will forever remain an important part of our country's history. and i think it's at that point, the constant constant present in our lives. that's what can be said about the queen . and alex, as you said, there have been reactions coming in from around the world. and we also have
8:36 pm
a reaction from the united states where just a moment ago go saw the american flag flying at half mast in memory of the queen. we have from the white house press secretary condolences. the news of the queen's death broke during a press conference. let's see if we can take a lesson into what she had to say. perhaps we're not getting that statement after all, but i think you've said it well, alex yeah. and how so many heads of state are really pouring out? it always has got the white house press secretary, corinne, john pierre. he said, are how brilliant we're out in our thoughts. go to the member family members. if the queen to the people of the united kingdom, our relationship with the people in the united kingdom, and this is something that the president has said to himself has grown stronger and stronger. i'm sure we will be hearing for more head state in the few. also heard
8:37 pm
for example from emmanuel macro on the president of france. we've also heard from, i think from shows the, the, the german chancellor as well, has also issued a statement. so they will be coming in thick and fast. of course, because this is not just, this wasn't a politician. the queen was a woman who was respected widely around the world. and she has been the one person who many people will know all around the world because she has been on the was on the throne for 70 years. thanks for that alex. i just want to come back to that statement that we heard from the united states. and actually get back across to our correspondent beer, get in london, because the queen she saw many us presidents come and go. and we've heard 15 british prime ministers, but also in the united states. and we'll see if we can ask what we know of her relationship to them. interesting. um,
8:38 pm
just as alex was, are talking about that i've been looking off and i've, i've seen the president, our bill clinton, former president bill clinton. and he, he gave a really, you know, quote, quote, quite a moving tribute. he said she led britain true great transformation with unfailing grace, dignity, and genuine care for the welfare of all. it's people in sunshine or storm. she was a source of stability, serenity, and strength. and he also mentioned that she and he fell down, that they have been treated extremely well and their visits to buckingham palace and her that she, he felt that she had an enormous contribution to the so called special relationship are between the u. k. and the u. s, which is something that british people, a british politicians on dead take her take very, very seriously. and that, that he felt that the queen really contributed to that say. so i think that really
8:39 pm
embodies on the feeling. i think that that the heads of state would have, i think she had, she had this ability to make people feel special. so when you see photos of her with heads of state, it seems like she really was able to give everybody their special attention. so when our president obama and michelle obama, when they came over she, she was so graceful and, and also smiley. and it seemed at her and you know, that had she key humor was, was shining through when she was engaging. i think particularly with, with her, with that a couple that, you know, people probably did take that as something that's, that, that's an honor to meet her and, and that did strength from the relationship between those 2 countries here. got thank you so much for that. we're seeing footage of more crowds gathering as the evening progresses. we also know that we've already heard it from a british prime minister at least trust in her 1st week and office. she's delivered
8:40 pm
at best statement on the queen's dat. we are all devastated by the news that we have just heard from bow moral. the death of her majesty the queen is a huge shock to the nation and to the world. queen elizabeth the 2nd was the rock on which molten britain was built. all country has grown and flourished under her reign. britain is the great country. it is today because of her. she ascended the throne just off to the 2nd well bull. she championed the development of the commonwealth from a small group of 7 countries to a family of $56.00 nations spotting every continent of the world. we're now a malden thriving dynamic nation. 3 2nd thing. queen elizabeth the 2nd, provided us with the stability and the strength that we needed. she was the very
8:41 pm
spirit of great britain, and that spirit will angel. she has been our longest ever raining monic. it's an extraordinary achievement to presided with such dignity and grace for 70. yes. hello. her life of service stretched be all maced of all living memories. in return, she was loved and admired by the people in the united kingdom and all around the world. she has been a personal inspiration to me and to many britons had devotion to duty is an example to us all. earlier this week, at 96, she remained determined to carry out, so she appointed me as her 15th prime minister. throughout her life, she said this is more than a 100 countries, and she has touched the lives of millions around the world. in the difficult days
8:42 pm
ahead, we will come together with our friends across the united kingdom, the commonwealth on the world to celebrate her extraordinary lifetime of service. it is a day of great loss, but queen elizabeth the 2nd leaves a great legacy. today the crown passes, as it has done so more than a 1000 years to our new monarch on you had to state his majesty, king charles the 3rd was the king's family. we mourn the loss of his mother. and as we bowed, we must come together as a people to support him to help him by the awesome responsibility that he now carries for a soul. we offer him all loyalty and devotion, just as his mother devoted so much to so many for so long. and with the passing of the 2nd elizabethan age, we are sure in a new era,
8:43 pm
in the magnificent history of our great country. exactly as her majesty would have wished by saying the work that was lizard trust speaking there. i'm calling queen elizabeth the rock on which modern britain was built. if you're just joining us, this is a special edition of dw news with some breaking news on britain's queen elizabeth. the 2nd has died at the age of 96. as the longest reigning monarch and head of state in the world, and her death means that her son charles succeeds her immediately. we also now know the new king is going to be known as king charles, following the death of his mother. that's confirmed by clarence house. we're now this is a moment of great sadness for him and for the entire world family. and now i want to get across to our correspondent, bear get mosque, who's standing by for us in london and there get, we just heard laser trust, they're the new prime minister. she's just taken office this week. how much of
8:44 pm
a shock must this be? it is a shock, i think for less trust. i mean, she really, ah, comes at a time as prime minister where when a country is not going through an easy period with a, an energy crisis that's very acute the country having to borrow a lot. and many people worried whether they will be able to afford their energy bills will be able to afford their cost of living. because people have seen their wages falling and in flashing the increasing at a very high rate. so many people are, are quite hard done by and so in this particular moment to lose the queen i think is very um, it's very hard for, for the prime minister because she now has to all, to divert her own attention obviously, ah, to, to this and to their, to the transition to king charles where she um, would have probably have hope that she could devote all her energy into becoming
8:45 pm
their own new prime minister and, and helping to tackle all these various political crises that she finds herself in . but the stress has spoken moving lee about how she was, are inspired by the queen, and now she has a chance to, to show that she has a similar sense of duty and she cannot carry out. all these are various different, difficult and, and different house they saw a lying ahead of her and burger. the 2 they met just at 2 days ago in scotland in that transfer of power from former prime minister boris johnson to less trust. what can you tell us about that meeting? well we and nicholas ross has spoken about this, and we have seen these photos where the queen only 2 days ago was seen smiling. she was, ah ha, as she was walking with the stick. so there was a picture released where that showed her with a walking throat,
8:46 pm
but she looked very charming as she, as she usually dolls. and she had this warm smile where she greeted list trussel as the new prime minister. and it really does speak to her to her just capacity to, to work and to carry on land. she re know that she hasn't been extremely well in the last are weeks she she'll to, has lost her husband fairly recently than she had contracted corby. and she had, as the doctor said, ongoing mobility issues show. so she hadn't been carrying out her royal duties as normal. she had a lot of it via zoom and she would have probably most likely preferred to be in buckingham palace. and her as is the tradition and appoint a new prime minister in buckingham palace, but that was impossible. but she did what she could do. and really up to the end. she worked as hard as she ever did. and reactions have been coming in from around the world. burger. thank you so much for that. i want to turn to the united states
8:47 pm
. actually we have a response from the white house press secretary and she expressed her condolence as when the news of the queen's death broke during a press conference. so as i said to earlier, you know, our hearts and our thoughts go to the family members of the queen goes to the people of the united kingdom. i don't want to get ahead of what the president is going to say. i want him to from you all to hear from him 1st and so i don't want to get ahead of that. but and i said this earlier, our relationship with the people of the united kingdom. and this is something that the president has said himself has grown stronger and stronger and it is whatever the kingdom is, one of our closest allies. and again,
8:48 pm
our hearts go to the people of the united kingdom, to the queen and to, to her family. so condolences there from the united states of alex forest whiting. share in the studio with me covers british politics. i was what you make of that statement. well, the secretary, obviously she doesn't want to say anything before. president biden does himself in person, but she's obviously showing that america stand shoulder to shoulder with the united kingdom at the moment, talking about how they have stronger and stronger relations. closest allies in their heart goes out to the people and also to the royal family. as you would expect, and i do think that somebody like president biden who, himself, um, is a good age. i'm would, is like a very much to have respected everything about the queen and everything she stood for because she had always put to she 1st. and, you know,
8:49 pm
perhaps he would consider himself, although she was obviously significantly older than him, but of a similar and perhaps a similar sort of attitude to certainly service jew t and trying to do the right thing. so i think we will wait to see what a president biden actually says, but very clear there that the white house and also across the globe actually that every head of state or every person um at the moment who i'm as an a role in public life will be paying their condolences and their tribute to queen elizabeth the 2nd who was on the throne for as we keep the hanging. but it is an extraordinary number of years 70 years, 7 decades. we are just looking here at of footage from buckingham palace as the sun has gone down. of course the queen is in a bell moral palace in scotland. that is where she is passed away to day after warnings from her doctors that she was not well. i alex won't ask you about more
8:50 pm
reactions. have we heard anything from here in germany? yes, we know that the german parliament held on one minute silence in tribute to queen elizabeth the 2nd. we've also heard now from chancellor schultz who said, we mourn the death of queen elizabeth the 2nd. she was a role model and inspiration for millions, also here groups or so here in germany. and he went on to talk about her great sense of humor, which will be sorely missed. also, we've heard from the german president, frank voter style. maya queen elizabeth, the 2nd is a woman who shaped the century. she witnessed and has written a contemporary history and also from the german foreign minister and elaine, a bare bog, she was a source of strength and confidence to her country for almost a 100 years. germany will remain eternally grateful to her for reaching out to us.
8:51 pm
this is important for reaching out to us for reconciliation after the terror of world war 2. now obviously she wasn't queen during world war 2, but she came to the throne in 1952. that was only 7 years after the end of world war 2. so the queen really has, i've seen a huge amount of history unfolding and was always, i think very, i think it's fair to say very fun to germany, itself. her own grandmother, queen victoria was married to prince albert. he was a german. and so i think there was always been a special place and certainly the wins his heart of the royal families heart for germany. and that is why we are saying now hearing from the german president, the german chancellor and the foreign minister. and i'm sure many more paying tribute to a woman like queen elizabeth the 2nd. indeed, a woman who has in the birth of modern nation state has been on the throne hunger.
8:52 pm
and we can imagine barrett, i want to come back to you. we've just heard that reaction from germany, a woman who shaped the century, do you think that's fair to say? it is sad to say and is also something i think that's worth mentioning, that here in the u. k. she was always this figure that stood above politics. she was there, she was a witness to all these momentous changes and in world history and also in the history of the country. but she was always somebody who was above politics and i think that is also very um, very important to say. for example, i'm just reading ah, a statement by searcy star my he is the leader of the, of positioning labor party. and, and he has said that above the classes of politics, she stood not for what the nation ford over, but what it agreed upon. and as britain change rapidly around her,
8:53 pm
this dedication became the still point of our turning world. and i think, particularly in the last years when britain has gone through a lot of tar mile, since the breck said referendum since the rec said process, i think the queen was always there as, as this uniting figure. not every one in britain is a royalist, is a monarch case. some people want to abolish the monarchy, even though they are minority. but i think there was this respect throughout the country for the queen. i've never met anyone. and all the years that i've been living here, who didn't have respect for the queen, even if they don't like the idea of, of, of, of the monarchy. so i think this is really what's, what's important and, and what she's thought for. and it, this is why it is on a very important moment for the country not to have this figure out any more and have to go through this transition her get. you're absolutely right. whatever you think of the queen, she's certainly been a bastion of stability. can you tell us,
8:54 pm
i'm just once again what we can expect in the hours and in the days to come? what will be very interesting will be abroad caused by king charles. i have just read that he will be officially calling himself king charles on and, and, and the 3rd and he is expected to give us a broadcast. now the queen has died and been moral in scotland. we expect her body to go into edinburgh, which is the capital of scotland and then oh, and we don't know exactly at what time then she will, she will come to london and people will be able to pay their respects 1st in scotland. but then also in london, and there is a very big operation and with lots of security and obviously heads of state and the whole country basically are almost standing still and, and, and concentrating on,
8:55 pm
