said she was a role model and an inspiration for millions. and we can now speak to our correspondent berrigan mos in london. and our reporter here in the studio, alex forest whiting. good to see you both big. let's start with you. what's the latest from london on the death of the queen and the reactions to her passing? well, we've seen people gathering not only in london around buckingham palace, but also in scotland and people paying their respects. and i think there is hardly any one who is not touched here by the death of her majesty. because even though not every one in the u. k is a royalist, not even or not everyone is a fan of the queen, but she has had the respect of the people that i have not met anyone who had the

bad were to say about the queen. so she really was this person who was always there for everyone. and she met so many people during the 7 decades that she's been the monarch. she's been 200 countries. she's had tens of thousands of, of duty of work duties where she was out and about where she was traveling. so just an incredible body of work. and so many people that she's met to the, for the british people, this really is a momentous day. alex, her passing was announced in a very brief statement by the palace. do we know anything else about the circumstances of her death? we don't at all. we know is that the queen has had, had had mobility issues and problems over the past few months and that really began became very evident last august when she had to cancel a visit to northern ireland. since then, i think people have been on tenterhooks,
10:04 pm
worried about her health. um, but as far as we knew, she was still okay. she was in by moral in the north of scotland. she was expected to come back to buckingham palace in london, but she didn't, as she had stayed up there and, and obviously that was unprecedented because she then had to say farewell to one prime minister and welcome in a new prime minister which should have been done in at buckingham palace that was done at bar morrow, but it wasn't until today. buckingham palace released a statement in which they said that doctors were concerned about her health. and it became evident as family members started to travel to bomber that this was extremely serious. also unprecedented, really for buckingham palace to issue a statement like that. and i, i think, i mean, we don't know if there was anything an underlying with the queen's health. but it did become very clear that she had been for some time,
10:05 pm
but that obviously she passed away today and we will perhaps find out what exactly was the root cause of her death. she was though 96. i mean, she had had a very good innings and she had been on the throne for 70 years. but even so the fact that she could welcome in a new prime minister just 2 days ago and be photographed with less trust. and then 2 days later, di shows that obviously things changed dramatically for the worse. you mentioned the changing of the guard there between one prime minister to the other. of course, both of them have been reacting to the queen's death. and shortly after the announcement, the newly appointed prime minister less trust held a speech. let's listen it. we are all devastated by the news that we have just heard from bar moral. the death of her majesty the queen is a huge shock to the nation. and to the world, queen elizabeth,
10:06 pm
the 2nd was the rock on which modern britain was built. our country has grown and flourished under her reign. britain is the great country. it is today because of her. she ascended the throne just after the 2nd world war. she championed the development of the commonwealth from a small group of 7 countries to a family of $56.00 nations spotting every continent of the world. we are now a modern, thriving dynamic nation. 3 2nd thing, queen elizabeth, the 2nd, provided us with the stability and the strength that we needed. she was the very spirit of great britain, and that spirit will enjo. she has been our longest reigning monarch. it's an extraordinary achievement to presided with such dignity and grace for 70 years. her law, her life service stretch,
10:07 pm
be all maced of all living memories. in return, she was loved and admired by the people in the united kingdom and all around the world. she has been a personal inspiration to me and to many britons. her devotion to duty is an example to us all. earlier this week, at 96, she remained determined to carry out so she appointed me as her 15th prime minister . throughout her life, she visited more than 100 countries, and she has touched the lives of millions around the world. in the difficult days ahead, we will come together with our friends across the united kingdom, the commonwealth on the world to celebrate her extraordinary lifetime of service. it is a day of great loss, but queen elizabeth the 2nd leaves
10:08 pm
a great legacy. today the crown passes, as it has done for more than a 1000 years to our new monarch on new head of state. his majesty king charles the 3rd. with the king's family, we mourn the loss of his mother. and as we are born, we must come together as a people to support him to help him by the awesome responsibility that he now carries for us all. we offer him our loyalty and devotion just as his mother devoted so much to so many, for so long and with the passing of the 2nd elizabethan age. we are sure in a new era, in the magnificent history of our great country, exactly as her majesty would have wished by saying the words, god save the king. figured les tress, they're calling the queen the rock on which modern britain was built. what will
10:09 pm
queen elizabeth legacy b how legacy will be as somebody who was there for the people and who really presented this debility for the people? i think one good example is if you look at the time of the recent of the recent history when britain was really polarized and where the country was split as a result of the break said process. and queen elizabeth has not freely taken any positions for or against brick, said she, she went to germany on this visit visit. she said that a division in europe is dangerous. and that though, the nations must stand together and this was as far as you went when it comes to a political statement. she is somebody who has been described also by the leader of the opposition circus. darma whose expresses and condolences of cause. she's been
10:10 pm
ex, describe as somebody who, who stood on for, for what than what binds the nation together and not void people were fighting for . and this is really the most important legacy. i think it's that she was there really for everybody not for young, old or for a royalist or, or not a royalist. she was really there for everybody. and that's what people at might have for canada, where the british monarch is the head of state minister justin trudeau had one words for her as well. in a complicated world, her steady grace and resolve brought comfort and strength to us. all canada is in the morning she was one of my favorite people in the world and i will miss her so that is
10:11 pm
quite the statement alex is not yet very emotional and very honest. and i think that's how many of heads of state prime ministers, president, chancellors feel as well. and they've been many, many people paying tribute to the queen over the past few hours. and i have a few, i'm just from the social media from twitter, people who put her reactions pretty quickly. we can hopefully go to some now, but we have all our shows, the german chancellor. he has paid tribute, saying, we mourn the death of queen elizabeth the 2nd. she was a role model and inspiration for millions here also here in germany, a commitment to german british reconciliation after the horrors of world war 2 will remain unforgotten. she will be missed, not least, her wonderful humor, which i think is a lovely little point to add to the. we've also heard from the french president
10:12 pm
emanuel macro. he tweeted this, he said, her majesty, queen elizabeth the 2nd embodied the british nation's continuity and unity for over 70 years. i remember her as a friend of france, a kind, hearty queen who has left a lasting impression on her country and has century. and then finally, just one more because it's come from the ukrainian president, florida me is the lensky, of course, britain being one of the 1st countries to really zalinski in his battle against russia, against putin, after the invasion. and he has said it is with deep sadness that we learned of the death of her majesty, queen elizabeth the 2nd, on behalf of the ukrainian people. we extend sincere condolences to the royal family, the entire united kingdom and the commonwealth. over this, irreparable loss of thoughts and prayers are with you, and many,
10:13 pm
many other tweaked messages of support telegrams, for example, the pope, writing to king charles have been pouring out a all over the world. and i think that just gives you a taste of how people felt about the queen who had been monarch for 70 years and have presided over an enormous change. not just across the united kingdom, which began when she, when she took over as queen. it was an empire and now clearly is not, but not just a few changes in the u. k, but also across the world. you know, the world was a different place when she came to power. big it back to you. we heard it there. inspiration was enough on the line has called her a legend. queen elizabeth was quite an institution, a symbol of continuity. in times like these were the u. k. is going through multiple crises. what does her passing mean for the stability of the country?
10:14 pm
it really comes at a very difficult time for the country and we have a new prime minister. les stress has only been on the bay severe, accepted as a prime minister by the queen 2 days ago and is comes after a period when many people in the u. k. have seen their wages falling when we have seen inflation skyrocketing. so a lot of people are really feeling the squeeze financially in a very big way. and when the, the country is also hit by an energy crisis as other a european countries, energy prices are, are going through the roof and just to day and the emergency energy program that helps people through this crisis. i was announced by the new prime minister list trusty. so this really shows that the country is already and some sort of emergency state and to now also lose the figure had to lose the monarch and to have to deal
10:15 pm
with this transition to king charles. the 3rd, i think is comes at a time when, when the country really would have needed stability. but then again, this is something that the prime minister, this trust will it would have to deal with. and she will. and away i think have to step up and, and, and take the country with her. and she said that her had the queen was her inspiration. so now she can take a leave of the art of the book of the queen and, and to, and show this leadership and, and, and try and, and bring the country together. and morning i would say make it math in london and alex forest whiting. thank you both so much and tributes have been coming in from around the world in the u. s. white house press secretary, corinne john pierre, express her condolences when the news of the queen's death broke during a news conference. our hearts and our thoughts go to the
10:16 pm
family members of the queen goes to the people of the united kingdom. i don't want to get ahead of what the president is going to say. i want him to from you all to hear from him 1st. and so i don't want to get ahead of that. but and i said this earlier, our relationship with the people of the united kingdom. and this is something that the president has said himself has grown stronger and stronger. and it is one over the kingdom is one of our closest allies. and again, our hearts go to the people of the united kingdom, to the queen, and to, to her family. in a paul, join me now from washington d. c. m. s. tell me, what's the reaction in washington besides the one we just saw?
10:17 pm
all and many, many people are up at the british embassy right now, laying flowers, lightning candles. oh, sending some prayers or she was very love to you in the united states and also many former presidents as george w bush bragg obama. and actually, even donald trump came out the state men's underlying what an outstanding person she was in an official proclamation president, a joe biden said in a world of constant a change. she was a steadying presence and a source of comfort we've. i have heard that throughout the day, right, that many people just stress the fact how important she was right now in this world of changes as this rock are president biden, also are ordered flags at half steph, through sunset on the day of queen elizabeth's internment, and he also said that they are looking, he and the 1st lady and the whole i told her the whole government actually i
10:18 pm
looking forward to a continuing close friendship with king charles the 3rd the relationship between the u. s. and the u. k. has of course, always been very special for historical reasons, but in the past 7 decades, that the queen play any part in oh, definitely. and it is interesting to see how different are also different a former presidents react. and i think actually this fair to say that michelle obama and her the creed might have had a very special relationship by i'm sure many of our viewers recall the moment when president obama and the 1st lady were visiting the queen and in london. and michelle obama touched her bag and this is absolutely impossible. that's forbidden . you are not allowed to touch the queen, but the queen, in her very humorous way,
10:19 pm
reacted in the very warm away that kind of underlines. i think the special relationship between her, especially michelle obama. i think the queen understood how stressful and how hard that can be like to be and the public eye, which is not always really friendly to women in a school in washington. thank you so much. although she had increasingly withdrawn from high profile royal duties in recent years, queen elizabeth dedicated her 70 year reign to serving her subjects. we look back now at the life of the world's oldest and longest reigning monarch o. no british monarch reigned for as long as queen elizabeth the 2nd. ah, she was a constant in time of dramatic change. ah, all was disciplined. always dutiful. a life of public service.
10:20 pm
right? until the end. in 1926, elizabeth came into the world. she was not born to be queen, but when her uncle king edward the 8th advocated after less than a year on the throne, elizabeth father was crowned king. his daughter suddenly became the crown princess . she accepted the task and took it seriously. even in her youth, i did have before you all the time i heard i whether it be no short shall be diverted to your service and to the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong. during world war 2, elizabeth did her military service as a mechanic after the war. she married naval officer, philip mount patton, her great love, ah, one year later,
10:21 pm
prince charles was born. the 1st of 4 children. ah, in february 952, her father, king george, the 6th died. elizabeth replaced him while on a trip to africa. a tragic news reached princess elizabeth and her husband, while in kenya and the new queen left immediately london. elizabeth, the 2nd was only 25 years of age. her carnation ceremony did not take place until the following year. in june, 1953. the ceremony itself was one of the 1st world events to be broadcast on television. an estimated 300000000 people watched around the globe. the queen took the throne at a time when the british empire was losing its importance. many former colonies
10:22 pm
gained their independence while at the same time, a new global conflict began with the cold war. as queen elizabeth was not allowed to pursue her own political agenda, but she was the most important representative of her country and head of the commonwealth. in that role, she tirelessly travelled the world in the decades that followed. i at home, elizabeth was intent on boosting the royal family's popularity. also with the help of the media. the spectacular wedding of her son charles to diana spencer, in the summer of 1981 was the most watch tv broadcast of all time.
10:23 pm
but when what appeared to be a perfect royal family life began to unravel. the tabloid press was merciless. in the 1990s, the newspapers feasted on the royal affairs and divorces. charles and diana's marriage failed 1st time and in 1997. the diana died in a traffic accident. the worldwide outpouring of sympathy was overwhelming, but the royal family struggled to find sympathetic words. she was an exceptional and gifted human being in good times and bad. she never lost her capacity to smile and laugh, nor to, and others with her kindness. this was when the royal's popularity hidden all time low diana's son's princes william and harry did not talk about the trauma of their mother's death until years later.
10:24 pm
ah, when harry's marriage to us televisions to megan markov has repeatedly exploited by the tabloids the couple made a radical exit. they officially turned their backs on the royal family. ultimately moving to the united states. there they complained in interviews about racism in the media. and also in the palace compared to the other members of the royal family, the queen let a quiet marriage. she was married to her childhood sweetheart, prince philip for 73 years. he was an important pillar of support for her, which made the moment of parting all the more difficult. ah, in the spring of 2021, philip died, age 909. owing to the corona virus pandemic, the funeral took place with a very small circle of mourners. elizabeth was alone. it was an image that touched
10:25 pm
many but only a few days later, she was again representing the country, receiving ambassadors by a video conference, and participating in zoom meetings with scientists. and it's wonderful work you are all doing. so is great to see you all. but you say you much. thank you. you got to stay. ah, in a world that has changed radically. elizabeth was a constant mainstay ah. committed to tradition, but not closed to the new and most of the critics of the british royal family paid tribute to the queen. for her long life in service to her country and to the commonwealth. you're watching
