governments send their condolences to the royal family, a special gun salute with 96 shots to mark the queen's age when she passed away. ah i manuscripts makennan welcome to our special coverage of the death of britons, queen elizabeth, who died on thursday 896, a son and successor, king charles the 3rd has returned to london. greeting well wishes outside buckingham palace, where crowds have gathered to pay tribute to british st. britton's longest serving monarch. the king is expected to meet british prime minister lives trust before dressing the country and the common
4:02 pm
and we can go straight to our correspondent in london, col now's lunch, who is in front of buckingham palace. thanks for joining us call. now, charles, the 3rd, he's been missing the public outside of buckingham palace and it's really quite a moment, isn't it call it is quite a moment, a very symbolic moment, just arriving moments ago. and it does seem like a bit of a changing of the guard years, so to speak of charles arriving. and this really has been the start of a very scripted farewell, something that's been in the works and been planned for long time. i'm not sure that the crowds outside were expecting charles to greet them the, the way that he did coming out was camilla or we heard big chairs going up as, as soon as he did that, i'm one thing i should point out speaking of ceremony and symbolic gestures, flags, of course, have been lowered through half mast across the country. out of respect of
4:03 pm
a queen. there's one flag that would be the exception and that's the one that you might be able to see over my shoulder. a just is above locked in empowers. and of course that flag when it is raised, signifies that normally the queen is in residence. well now that flag is again raised and it signifies that the king is in residence, so definitely as a symbolic moment there and handing over of course the residence from his mother, from elizabeth to now king. now king charles, the 3rd has been a king in waiting for decades. would you say the british people are ready for king charles? ah, i don't think that even though they've been waiting and wondering when this moment with would come, i'm not sure that anybody could really be prepared for the magnitude of the moment . the queen has meant so much to this country and to the people here. but of course, because of that long drawn out process,
4:04 pm
every one is very familiar with prince charles. now king charles, his effort says, beliefs and what he represents. although today will be an interesting kind, this will be the 1st time that they'll be, of course, meeting with the new prime minister louis frost. and we do expect that he will be addressing the nation for the 1st time around 6 o'clock local time on television. so this will be the chance to introduce himself as king to the nation to say a few words. and i'm judging by the reaction that we saw when he was reading crowds outside of buckingham palace earlier. it should be another warm, warm celebration and warm reaction. again, when he makes an address at charles us of course is not alone. a charles is married to camilla, who will now be known as queen consort. it of course, took a long time for people to get used to the idea of camella being married to child to accept her as a, as a royal. how do people do you think feel about her now?
4:05 pm
well again, she's also been in the public drive for a very long time, and we know that before the queen passed, she expressed her wishes that came to be known. and not only as, as queen concord, but eventually as queen camilla and that was really a monumental step and one that was unprecedented. but i'm sure that many people were speculating that that was meant to help with the way for camilla, as well as charles to enter into their new roles when the moment came. so it seemed as if we're now the focus is of course, on the queen, remembering her legacy, remembering her achievement in her life. and as we go forward throughout these days of morning and ceremony will begin to get a better sense of how the public is receiving their new king and their new council on a practical level call. what's next for king charles and his family and the coming in the coming days and weeks. well,
4:06 pm
we haven't seen much else from the rest of the royal family. of course they were all gathered at the queen's bedside yesterday as she passed away. and now we'll have to see exactly what comes next for the larger family in terms of king charles, he has a busy schedule today. he'll be making that televised at the rest of the meeting with live trust and tomorrow. although he now, as soon as the queen passed away, he did officially become king. there will be a ceremony tomorrow. well, he will be proclaimed king and the prince william who of course now is next in line to the throne. he will be joining him. there's so there's all sorts of ceremonies, memorial services and funerals that are on the way. and the biggest task now for finals will be to make decisions as to exactly when those will take place. what sort of things will be there and, and he'll be in fact making a multi nation tauriel be stopping in an island problem world and you're in england
4:07 pm
as well as the beginning. introduce himself to the nation. he w correspondent counseling in london. thank you so much. and now the queen passed away at her beloved balmoral castle in scotland and that is where dw correspondent emily go. dean is now standing by. hi emily. it's good to see. talk to us a little bit about about moral catholic. held a very special place in the queen's heart, didn't it? absolutely. the queen loved being here. she felt very comfortable here. she felt safe here. you wouldn't see her driving around here. you would see her hiking. out on the fields in the countryside. she held a very, very special spot in her heart to scotland and i think that's also the reason for why she would, you know, she returned to bar moral every year for the summer 1st for several months. really . and, you know, there are,
4:08 pm
there are stories that now that are being recalled of the queen, you know, encountering american tourists while she was out hiking. and i'm, you know, these american tourists didn't quite recognize hand. they asked, how have you ever met the queen? and she, she, she turned to her security guard and said, no, i haven't, he has, you know, so she, she, that she would engage was a bit with the people that she would encounter. and am i, yes you, i think the best way to describe her relationship to, to scotland and about moral is just she loved it here. and she was really a part of the community was and she, i should just mention emily, that we were and, and are seeing live life pictures are right now. can i ask you on a, on a practical level, and how does the queen's body now get back down to london? what, what will happen next? yes. so she will be taken to taken to edinburgh next,
4:09 pm
where she will be. i'm sort of brought along the royal mile in edinburgh, which sort of the main big road when you know at birth, though. so it was the big road that leads up to the castle and, and she will line states at st. golf cathedral, where people can say good bye pay. that tribute commemorates her life and remember her. and i think to be very honest, i think that's ultimately maybe also on what she intended to happen when she decided to spend so much time here. and her last few months, she loved scotland, she obviously loved england, but i think she wanted to make sure that when she goes, she, every one gets to say good bye to her and yes, from, from edinburgh. then she will be taken to london where the commemorations will continue. did ellie's emily varden outside balmoral cast van scotland? thank you so much. and while the death of the 96 year old queen was not

unexpected given her recent health in difficulties, the u. k. is feeling the shock of her loss. this report now on a nation in morning. on the way to school, a solitary visit to the gates of rainy bell moral estate. a moment for a parent and children to mark the day after the queen died. less solitary outside of buckingham palace in london, where police officers are providing flower placement and security. why it's another logical spot for prayer and reflections. the day after the queen died even when she didn't touch us personally. it means a lot from not everywhere list that i think she was a mother and she, she's been a randall malloy, so i've never known anything different. that last of course with

a monarch on the throne for 70 years is a common refrain. and withal none, dis, wong queen is here, she's here the past, we've always looked up to them quain, og now and she's just been a constant through everything. everything that goes on bad. she's really reminded us of what it means to b ha, putting something you know, taking a vow and taking it seriously. the queen vowed to dedicate her life to public service and stuck to her promise, even in the last days of her life, smiling as she formerly appointed live trust as the 15th prime minister under her watch. but thursday evening, the formal notice at buckingham palace, the queen had passed peacefully at her scottish estate, and the country now has a king. this will impute charles at 73 has been standing by as air to the throne

for decades, assisting his mother, especially as she aged now king charles the 3rd, you know, things gonna shine. he and i will probably add some different currency. now, you know, with pneumonia on there and a lot is going to change with a new king. a lot is going to stay the same. but the day after the queen died and in the weeks to come it's still about her and dw report, a hand clever is here in the studio with me to talk about all of this a little bit more. hannah, are you surprised by the outpouring of grief that we're seeing in britain and across the world it's? it's quite amazing as now. i'm no, i'm not surprised. and, but you might be, you know, i mean this is the lady who spent a long, i mean 70 years on a throne, but nobody knows her. nobody knew her know that none of these people outside any of these palaces will have had a person or an actual personal connection with her. she was more much more kind of

projection screen for everybody to put their hopes and wishes and their ideas about duty and will, is kind of things on. so, no, i'm not surprised. it is amazing if you think about the psychology of it is very complicated. but i was a very young reporter in 1997 when princess diana died. and that was similarly breathtaking in terms of the amount of public grief that was the sea of flowers that you saw laid out. i think it was a kensington palace in london. then this is slightly different, she was 9696 euros people die. but it is such a shock. a shock, an unexpected shock for people and yet it's, it's an astounding outpouring of grief is really quite breathtaking. anna, stay there. we're gonna come back. she later but we're gonna take a closer look now at the new king charles, the 3rd who had did of course, have decades to prepare for his roles. so let's take a look back at charles's long wait to be king. he was done the

child's work and sustainability. he has always been passionate about the environment, promoting organic farming and biodiversity on his estate. but also on a global stage at the cop $26.00 climate summit in las go, he urged global leaders to do more to limit global warming. the close to the nation is far greater than the coast to prevention. climb has quite literally run out. this will, in, as his mother stepped back from some of her responsibilities in recent years, and especially after the death of his father, prince philip charles took a more significant and active part in discharging royal duties from king in waiting to king and training. now, charles will take on the role that he has been preparing for his entire life.
4:18 pm
anna king charles, the third's m. he's had his fair share of controversies and he is a very different character to his mother. but a very similar sense of duty. do you think that he can become as beloved as his mother was? as queen know would be the short answer and he's been around for too long. he's made too many very public mistakes and he doesn't have now have 7 to years to sit on the throne to build up that affection mung, the british public. but he has been really successful in rebuilding his public reputation when he married camilla after the disaster of his marriage, to diana. at that time was the 1st step really to him coming back into the affections of people, people to see that is quite romantic thing to do. you know, they'd always been in love. and the smart thing that he's doing is to ally himself very closely with his oldest son, william and his wife, kate, you know, and i will,
4:19 pm
him, is the next law in line to the throne, william and kate, a massively popular. so if charles continues to be smart, he will continue to hold both of them and their young kids close. because that as a package is something that could then you could conceive be as popular as as elizabeth. the 2nd has been. but on his own know, with william and kate and the kids, probably, he's been very passionate about passionate about and very vocal about his passions . kenny, remain as vocal about these topics now that he's king. that's a really interesting constitutional question. in the unwritten constitution, the britain has. the monarch is supposed to stay out of politics. they actually, they haven't stayed out of politics. and the have been some, some letters that some of the prince charles, when he was prince, wrote to tony blair's government in 2004, 2005 whole selection of them. he wrote to various different ministers urging them
4:20 pm
to take particular stances on policies and areas that he was really interested in. that was the scandal and the government tried very hard to stop those that is being released now, whether he can, can you continue to be of kind of activist king that's really into that that's a deep constitution. constitutional question for the k. whether they want a king who is interfering in de politics left the cannon. thank you. now presidents, prime ministers, monarchs, and world leaders have been paid tribute to the life and service of queen elizabeth remembrances coming in from all around the globe order. ordinary people have also paid their respects to the woman who was the face of britain and its commonwealth for more than 70 years. oh, a moving farewell war. cry for the queen. new zealand pays homage to her majesty with a ceremonial mari hacker dance. 8 7
