12:00 pm
we need to talk about all the topics that north divides and elijah and this i have invited many deer and well known guests. and i would like to invite you to an end ah ah, this is d, w. news live from berlin, israel's prime minister on a diplomatic visit to berlin. the 2 countries want to finalize a deal on strategic economic and security operation. but germany's backing for a nuclear deal with iran threatens to cast a shadow. we will go live to the press conference being held. i will have charlotte's, and yet you repeat. and also britain's new monarch addresses parliament for the 1st
12:01 pm
time, 4 days after the death of his mother, king charles vowels to uphold her commitment to constitutional government. later he'll lead a procession through edinburgh bringing the late queen elizabeth coffin to the cathedral. ah, i am and you can mckinnon. thanks so much for being with us. is rainy prime minister. yeah. le. pete is visiting berlin, he's being accompanied by several holocaust survivors on this. his 1st trip to germany since taking office. the pete is currently meeting with german chancellor wolf shaw. it's on there. do to hold a press conference within the next hour, which we will bring to you live. now one of the key issues for the meeting is the iran nuclear agreement. it's a deal that, that germany and the israel opposes and
12:02 pm
while we wait, the chancellor will have, shall, its, and the israeli prime minister to make an appearance. we can talk to d. w as chief political correspondent, melinda crane. welcome, melinda. now it is iran's nuclear deal and how best to deal with it. that is going to be one of the key issues in this meeting today, isn't it? and of course germany in israel are on opposite sides. that is the case. israel has said very clearly that it believes that this revitalization of this agreement, which of course has been on ice since 2018 when the u. s. left at that, the revitalization of this agreement must be stopped at all costs as must the lifting of sanctions against iran. so that is definitely the chief objective of this meeting. and a media reporting that jojo la peeved, told the israeli cabinet before he departed israel. that he feels that they are on
12:03 pm
the very successful diplomatic campaign to stop the agreement. and also is said to have mentioned that he sees germany as central to the european position. germany, however, has aligned itself closely with europe and to the european union's foreign policy adviser. has said that he believes reinvigorating the deal is crucial to stop a nuclear catastrophe. in his words, however, he has also acknowledged quite recently that he believes the chances of getting a new deal back or are receding. and the talks are said to be deadlocked. so at the moment, israel may be hoping to push its case harder, but certainly germany will not be deciding anything alone. so was all the chances to day of reaching some kind of compromise. i think we're likely to hear some general professions of understanding and concern for the positions of the other side. but i certainly, i don't think we will see germany go out on
12:04 pm
a limb in terms of what the other european powers will do because they have, as i said, very closely coordinated their positions. and just to underline the fact and israel is so against this deal because it basically believes it cannot and will not stop iran from becoming a nuclear states. that's correct. and because israel said and president outside who was here in berlin last week for the memorial ceremony for victims of the 1972 terrorist attack at the munich olympics. he said at that time that iran is bent on israel's destruction, and that is real therefore does not believe that this deal will be that this deal is something that will, in fact, demilitarized iran, but will only make it more powerful. ok, i should just refer obvious to the fact that these are live pictures that we're seeing right now. now, this conflict melinda over iran's nuclear ambitions has been going on for years.
12:05 pm
can you tell us why it's so difficult to find a solution? well, in fact, a solution had been found, as you remember, there was a 2015 agreement is real, definitely did not support that at that time either. but there was a 2015 agreement with iran, and it was widely viewed as having kept iran's nuclear program in check and also allowed for the lifting of some, if not all of the sanctions that had been very, very burdensome for iran. but president donald trump took the u. s. out of that deal in 2018 and that essentially torpedoed it once the u. s. was gone, iran saw no more reason to to stay within the parameters that had been defined for its nuclear program. and that was a source of enormous dismay, too many in europe who had believed that this deal as did president barack obama,
12:06 pm
by the way, who schaeffer did it through a u. s. congress that was quite resistant, as well. all believed that that deal was better than having nothing in place. so since donald trump left to office and joe biden has been president, there has been renewed negotiation to see if the deal could be revitalized. it looked very, very difficult in the beginning. then there were hopes that in fact, success might be close. that was about a month ago. and now again, we're hearing that the talks are deadlocked, and chances of success are apparently receding. ok, well we'll see what it said today. obviously the deal a dominating talks today, but can you tell us what else will be on the agenda in today's leasing between it's in la la, pete. well, this is yours le, pete's 1st trip to berlin as prime minister. so one of the things apparently they will be discussing is new agreements on security,
12:07 pm
economic and strategic cooperation. whatever that means exactly. also agreements were signed over the weekend with a 2 german ministers and israel on youth programs to try to facilitate exchanges and working together in the area of youth education and so on. something very important in this country as we see, rising at incidence of antisemitism and also concern about german attitudes toward israel. there's always been a principal since the inception of postwar, germany, of a german responsibility for the israeli state flowing from the holocaust. and we're seeing more and more germans saying and public opinion surveys that they believe a line can and should be drawn under the past. so use cooperation,
12:08 pm
very important to that end. and then the prime minister lakita will also be visiting together with chancellor schultz. the vans a conference site, that is the site here outside of berlin of the famous conference, exactly 80 years ago at which the final solution so called final solution. the extermination of the juice was formally decided and year leopard himself is the son of a holocaust survivor. so obviously this will have very, very great meaning to him, and he will also be visiting the holocaust memorial here in berlin. ok, so packed day melinda. thank you for now. we're going to come back to you again after we have heard the 2 leaders speak. but 1st, britton's new king is heading to edinburgh today. king charles will walk behind his mother's coffin, as it travels to saint giles cathedral, to lie and rest. now the new king began the day with his inaugural address to
