and they are far less agile than a portia, and for dirtier will look at efforts to clean up big rigs in the commercial transport branch as a whole. and we'll visit the greek island of india, where some environmentalists and businesses say their tolerance for wind turbines is waiting. hello and welcome to the show. i'm seeing beardsley in berlin. volkswagen could earn as much as 19 and a half 1000000000 euros through an i p o of iconic sports car. brandt. portia, that's according to the price range is now attached to the share offering at the high end portion. would see a market value of 75000000000 euros. volkswagen says the appeal will take place on september 29th at the frankfurt stock exchange. the capital boost would help a company with its long term projects, including a massive build out of its electric vehicle fleet. well, they may be less glamorous than as it be sports car, but commercial vehicles are the backbone of the economy and
4:46 pm
a major contributor to carbon emissions. greener fleets will be a major theme at the i a transportation trade fair, which opens today in hon ofer, germany, a trucks and buses make up only 2 per cent of vehicles on european roads. but they're responsible for 28 percent of c o. 2 emissions from road transport of the 3700000 trucks currently on the road in germany. most our diesel powered less than one and a half percent just over $50000.00 vehicles. our electric, other alternatives are even rare, including hydrogen fuel cells and overhead electric wires. i'm joined now by nadine mingled with transportation and environment. that is a network of largely environmental groups that lobbies the you for more 0 emission transportation alternatives. nadine, welcome to the show. we're talking to you on the occasion of the i a, a and hon over for commercial vehicles. we know that a lot of companies gonna be showing off their latest and greatest want to ask you

to begin with. is there something to be excited about when we look at the branch right now where it's going, where it's headed? if thank you for having me, 1st of all. and absolutely, there's a lot of things to, to get excited about next week at the 8 am. so basically what we can expect from, from truck manufacturers, is that's going to show a greater variety of 0 emission trucks. so that includes the newest battery, electric, and hydrogen fuel cell trucks, all ranges. and we can also expect charging providers to demonstrate their newest charging infrastructure. and that specifically means megawatt charging, which will allow to to charge the battery electric trucks in the drivers mandatory breaks 45 minutes. but these trucks will be be ready to go. and nadine, when can we expect to see electric trucks on highways across europe,
4:48 pm
across the world as a regular site? not just as a prototype. so ex, 3 for for last mile delivery. so for short distance, we see that logistics operators already operation lot operationalizing these trucks to date. of course, it's a few numbers, but we can expect in the next few years, this is for scale up. we know for manufacturer that they going to produce better electric truck for all ranges. so all distances will be possible even long distance trucking. and this is going to happen roughly speaking in 2024. when a few of the most progressive manufacturers have announced to go into mass production for long distance trucking or any restrictions to electric engines. essentially when we look at these larger vehicles, of course, you know, diesel being the fuel of choice, given the weight on many of these vehicles is not problematic to have the kind of
4:49 pm
battery weights. so people are, are skeptical that electric will be the right energy source for trucks that are basically 2 sides to the answer for, for most distances shore to long distance battery electric trucks will be the way to move forward. and that is because we can expect these batteries to have arranged of up to 500 kilometers in one charge is also the moment the drivers will have to take a mandatory break, at least in the 45 minutes. and as i said, if we have the charging infrastructure in place, this brake can be used to fully recharge the vehicle, which will mean that in a day a driver can drive up to 800 symmetric, which is the average range of packing. and the 2nd part is that for, for some nice applications that you need very high power outputs, or even longer distances, there will be hydrogen trucks that can fill in the gaps. and so you are basically
4:50 pm
able to fully transition to 0 emission trucking in just a few we are complaints from some manufacturers that the infrastructure is not there and doesn't appear to be coming at the correct tempo. and we're thinking of course, of energy stations of electric charging stations is the e, u and r e u countries providing the infrastructure they need to at the pace they need to. yes, the paper building infrastructure if off of a key importance in this debate, of course the roll out of infrastructure needs to fight with the number of vehicles on the road. now on a european level, we have a regulation for this in place. it's called after year. the alternative fuel infrastructure regulation is regulation, basically. requires member states to implement infrastructure for better electric trucks by 2025 already this will mandatory and this will go for across europe.
4:51 pm
and we also see private initiative from truck manufacturer themselves, such as followed pattern and sign law that came together and to build $1700.00 charging points across europe as a private initiative. and lastly, we also see member states rolling out the infrastructure already now, especially the germany in another lens are advancing this rather progressively though this is overall a very, very optimistic scenario. and then lastly, what about the infrastructure for hydrogen? can we expect to see that that will actually make progress in the years ahead, or is that a much further out goal? it's a little bit more and a little bit more in the future. and we know that hydrogen trucks will come a few years later, we expect the 1st one and the 1st ones and mass production, but the end of the 2020s. and so also the infrastructure needs to correspond to
4:52 pm
that. again, i'm referring to the, to the regulation that we have in place. we have targets for hydrogen as well. however, these targets start a few years later in 2030 and but also here starting from 2030, we will see both the vehicles and the infrastructure in place bus europe. alright. nadine lingers with transportation and environment in brussels. thank you very much . into we go now to some of the other global business stories, making headlines, 700000 people attended the opening weekend of october 1st and munich. the 1st time the 1st has been health since the beginning of the pandemic. that's down from 21000 . $1000000.00 visitors which the festival blamed on wet weather. drinkers now have to dig deep into their later hose and pockets leader beer cost. nearly 14 euros.

german manufacturers are facing historic backlogs, thanks to high energy prices and continuing supply chain difficulties. new government number's sho, unfulfilled orders with german companies in july were 12.6 percent higher than they're in the same period. last year. sing in europe, greece is speeding up the energy transition, expanding wind power and phasing out coal by 2028. a quarter of all turbines are concentrated on the island of e via near athens. it's a locals have had enough 400 wind turbines dominate the landscape. in this region of area and soon there could even be more the area has been scorched by several wild fires recently. and despite promises, there has been no re for a sting here yet. that means heavy rainfall poses a major landslide threat to coastal settlements. environmentalist scattering and yan is clear that the construction of more turbines will only make things worse. no

vegetation would mean little or no water retention. more turbines means more concrete and more damage. so vested all of our courtesy follow up next week at the ocean. they're planning to build another 14 turbines along the ridge from that mountain over there to this point. because a me of each one will be a 185 meters tall. and with him comes a concrete base and of course the necessary connecting run roman. no more turbine is what's written on this banner. many people here are fed up, especially because they don't get any of the benefits. the electricity, the turbines produce isn't for them. it goes to the attic or region on the mainland wire and under water cable. a new wind park is being planned for the islands not coast to compete construction. the motor oil energy group wants to cut down 55000 trees. it's not a popular idea, even the governor is against it, wishes thus good for some or more energy democracy. maybe for
4:55 pm
sure. if the 2 more and smaller investors to create their own renewables and also for, for the big was to have a deeper social control in terms of when, how and in which level the developer of the area vision also containing your, fortunately for us and it was really for us, for the license that you're sorry, nowadays licensed by the federal government across from the island on the mainland . there are hundreds of turbines waiting to be transported. the german energy company r w e, has just partnered with halima petroleum to construct an offshore wind park for our w e. it's a lucrative entry point into the creek energy sector. but those working in tourism are less enthusiastic in the effect of selling the wonderful ocean on

a clear water, a natural beauty here, the bees and quiet were losing everything. the earnest greek prime minister kitty acco smith, sir talkies has said environmental protection is a top priority for the government. whether that applies to eva is not yet known. and finally, they say, fortune favors the bold. well, the annual red bull flying day in the taiwanese city of tides, all had plenty of boldness. take a look. contestants flung themselves from a harbour wall to see how far they could make it without a motor. in their home made aircrafts, the winter ended applying for nearly 33 meters. she said the flying was every street. right, that's it for b and the d. w. business seem as always you find out more online d w dot com slash business are also on youtube or the dw news channel. i'm see from beardsley. thanks for watching.
