ah, it's waters connect people over many cultures. seen it almost far and so far do kareem drift along with exploring modern lifestyles and mediterranean where it has history left its traces, meeting people hearing their dreams, metty to me during this week on d w. this is d w 's asia, coming out today, a visit to taiwan in the shadow of china. germany impedes there to promote democratic cooperation. but is that old taiwan once and how to germany's ties with china change things plus, how caring for the elderly is becoming a business instead of the family affair. it used to be how to empower older indians
4:31 pm
. ah, i've been physical and glad you could join us. german lawmakers say chinese threats to tie one are unacceptable. visiting the island, they drew a parallel to rushes, invasion of ukraine, saying in europe, we've been experiencing a big neighbor invading a small one and trying to impose its will with military force. so what do the job and parliamentarians hope to achieve? t w's chief international editor richard walker. put that question to one of them till stephan from the ruling green party. it's important to attach to the, to the partnership we have, we have to for many, many years. and in those times, it's absolutely important to show we, we are friends in the times and we go to the corporation. we haven't many
4:32 pm
topics democratic to see how the business at those topics are important and important to, to show our friendship to taiwan. now china is bitterly opposed to this sort of visit. we saw what, how angry they got when very prominent american politician, nancy pelosi was just recently, would you say to the chinese who are going to be opposed to your visit to taiwan? is a democracy. and it's important for us to, to be in contact to, to have cooperation with other democracies. and we think we can learn a lot from taiwan. for example, the coven policy is quite different to germany, and it's quite successful. and it's important to, to find out what, what the difference is. it's important to, to learn about the enhancement of democracy. and i think there is something to learn from germany and the alpha, of course, that are off topics that taiwan looks at germany me for example,
4:33 pm
i have been to title them some years ago when they wanted to establish some late justice system. i could tell about germany, and in these times they have a late justice system which is quite close to the german system. and so with important, doubtless cooperation. and i think china should not. i should not interfere in this cooperation because we strengthened democracies in germany, in taiwan with this cooperation. have you had the chinese side say that you are doing in exactly that it interfering in china's internal affairs and breaching germany's own one china policy? do you see your, your visit as being in line with germany, one china policy? are you committed to this policy of one china that does not recognize taiwan is independent. it's important that we have this cooperation for many, many years already. and it's established that not the president of the bonus
4:34 pm
tag is going to to, to taiwan, and not a, not a member of government, but it's an established corporation that we have this exchange of members of parliament. and so it's no breach of the policy. we have for many, many years it would be a change if we would hesitate the to tie one in these times. and that's what that would be an important negative sign for ty, one, it wouldn't go any more in these times where china is threatening taiwan. and the war in ukraine is being seen by many in taiwan, but also around the world as a kind of wake up call for. ty wanted something similar could happen with the chinese invasion. do you see ukraine as a wake up call for tie? want, do you think the ukraine carries lessons for the world in approaching time? one, i think it's an important comparison because a crane was a threat for russia because it rained showed a has
4:35 pm
a very common history with russia that showed that it's possible to have an open macros. see, even if you have the history like the ukraine, and that's the same with taiwan tie one shows for people in china that it's possible to have an open, micro see. and, and said snowed not just the western thing to have a democracy like that. and so it's, it's of course, or an internet interesting lesson to learn. and i think it's also an example that many western democracies strengths, the democracy in crane. and so they do with them. that's the hope we have with this . was it a very on richard walker there speaking with german m p till stephan. let's get the perspective from taiwan. w corresponded william young is in type pe. william took care of support for taiwan and strengthening democratic cooperation. what does ty one, what so for ty pay ever since the controversial visit of the
4:36 pm
us house speaker, nancy pelosi in august, and then the subsequent chinese military exercise around taiwan type. he basically wants this tradition to be continued. so we were, we have already seen a french delegation visited last month. and then after the german delegation visiting there are continued visits from different countries of foreign delegation including the u. k, canada, and denmark and port type pay. they know that these publicity plays a very important role in terms of holding china accountable, and also sending a very strong signal to bay jane. taiwan is not alone in this fight. and there are more and more international recognition and attention being put and paid to the aggressive moves that aging have been displaying across the taiwan strait over the last few months. and taiwan is important to germany on an economic basis for trade
4:37 pm
. also for learning lessons like we heard there from the pandemic. but what would taiwan then like in return from germany? i think one of the key and top issue for taiwan based on my conversation with lawmakers here and also experts here. and they think that is a strengthening the bilateral trait ties, and they are hoping that may be some kind of discussion kim, be started through this delegation visit by the potentially exploring the possibility of establishing the bilateral trade agreement. of course, that is a years of steps that will have to be taken, but some of the experts even suggest if germany was able to actually take the 1st step with taiwan, it could even become the reference point for future e u, ty one byler bilateral trade agreement which the european parliament has actually been. bring this up over the last few months. what about the delivery of something
4:38 pm
like arms? i think for taiwan, they are. the current government is very practical. a bell. the possibility of essentially because the u. s. has the taiwan relations act that requires us to play that role, but there is no such law that exist in germany. and so i think the expectation of an actual on supply right now, currently from germany is not off the top priority. but for time one, the most important thing is for berlin to actually continue to engage with time one at all levels and with a very public statement and public engagement. and at the same time, having more substantial engagement and exchanges like the trait deals and trade relationships. because they know that once the supply chain between taiwan in germany was established, that it could potentially play an important role to get into the consideration in
4:39 pm
terms of how germany calculates its relationship with china or how germany positioned itself in the, in the pacific region. and does tie one worry that any german support could be held hostage to its relationship with china. i'm sure that's also definitely part of the consideration and calculation for taipei when it comes to how deep and how it wants to really draft and position itself when it comes to engaging with germany . because it's whitely known. the, the german economy relies heavily on china in the chinese market, but with the new government that came in last year, there is also signed that berlin is taking a little bit of a new, a pivot tours. it's approached in china and towards the inner pacific. so i think taipei is holding on to the hope that the new government in germany is going to
4:40 pm
focus a little bit more on the value based diplomacy, which then is going to be able to play into the benefits of time. one, when it comes to the highlight of human rights and democracy, we're, we've already seen that being highlighted and brought up in the conversation between the town president tying when and the visiting delegation this morning over here in taipei, william young in taipei, ah, caring for india is growing, ranks of senior citizens is a challenge as lifespans rise, but with many younger indians working abroad. it also makes business sense. a whole lot of new firms are emerging, offering geriatric care, did abuse madeira chandry reports on coping with life in your twilight use for awfully 9 years now. this anita had been living by themselves after bought their sons, settled abroad with their families. last year, the son he signed up with an elderly care organization called in mawha,
