t w's director general heater lindberg to day calling that move unacceptable. i expect politicians in germany and europe to increase the pressure on the regime. lindberg said the fact that we appear on such a list now will not stop us from providing our users in iran with reliable information. i want to go now to jasmine ramsey. she is the director deputy director at the new york based center for human rights in iran. it's good to have you with this these projects they've been going on now for more than a month. we've seen the west impose new sanctions on iran. do you see any sign though, that the regime is bowing to pressure from outside as well as from inside the country? no, absolutely not. it's actually increasing its repression on the streets. and we saw a massive security presence in more than a dozen cities across the run today. as there were mass protests on the 14th day. since messiah means dead,
9:05 pm
it's been 6 weeks. we know that in the past there have been movements protest, movements that have been snuffed out by cracked down by the regime. do you think that the protestors this time can keep this momentum go? of course, it's up to the protesters themselves, but the fact that they have been going on for as long as they have given the lethal force that the state has been using to repress these protest speaks to the growth of the movement. of course, it's not just now that these protests started. it's part of an evolving movement that's been going on for years, and he rides, trying to address the faces of impunity that runs rampant in the government. and we have reports that more than a 100 people had died since these approaches began. do you worried that the actual death toll of is much higher? and are you worried that that the correct now we're seeing is going to get worse. of course it's gonna get worse, and that's why we're calling on the un human rights council to set up a special urgent session to establish independent reporting and accountability
9:06 pm
mechanisms. this call by many human rights groups including our center for the human rights. and iran was bolstered today by more than 20 special wrapper tours at when, who had initially called on the iranian government to allow an independent investigation into masa means death. and that those halls were ignored. so now these special rapid tours are also calling for the un human rights council to establish sessions . so this really needs to move beyond statements of condemnation to collective action on the international stage miserably. i just want to ask you there, you know, iran is already dealing with a massive sanctions coming from the west. why do you think then that getting anything from in the united nations? what, what do you think that's going to make the regime change its course with these sanctions have not been able to do that? well, what you're seeing right now is people rising up to call out against the mass repression that's going on on a scale. and that's why the international community needs to band together to

support these people. there needs to be costs enacted on the government. any right, so that it doesn't believe that business can occur, go on as usually the nuclear jill should be put on hold. iran has membership on the status of women commission in the u. n. the most important institution in the u. n . for gender equality, iran should be ejected from that. there needs to be costs and there's still needs to be a lot more done and a can be done on the international stage before we can give us and say there's nothing that the world can do. the supreme leader, the ayatollah hominy, has claimed that these protests are being controlled by foreign governments. how do you read that claim? this man has been in power as a decades. he's unelected, and he holds absolute power over the entire country. i wanted the chance that you constantly here among massive protest, different facets of society,

9:12 pm
countries were warned about them. so, and observe us, we're expecting something like this to happen because of the war in ukraine, because the situation is tense and russia using its nuclear power to threaten the western to ukraine. so it is not surprising at all. on the other hand, the war has been going on in ukraine for over 8 months now. everybody is very under pressure, including the russian military. so you cannot exclude that in such as ration. something may go wrong. this was not a nuclear test, it was a test of missiles capable of carrying and nuclear nuclear warheads. but still, these are strategic weapons and they are very, very dangerous. and one thing more that, which makes me worry, is that last time russia did this was in february just a few days before the invasion of ukraine. so it could be kind of a signal to the west that russia is preparing to escalate there. and he does,
9:13 pm
but he wonder, would these exercises be taking place if there were no invasion of ukraine taking place right now is how do these drills didn't fit into pollutants overall strategy? well, nuclear siggler, nit, signaling is very important to russia's policy in russia is doing this to threaten the west, as i've just said, especially to threaten it's and to prevent the best from delivering certain types of weapons to your grand, especially long range missiles russians or russian officials have repeated that many times and russia, there are 2 ways. russia is doing that. first president, putting himself is threatening the west to use nuclear weapons and of course he needs ashore will force. and this is exactly what we're seeing now. and maybe last but not least, these nuclear drills, the demonstration of russian force. we've seen missiles carried by
9:14 pm
a sea by an underwater submarine. we've seen a launch from, from a strategic bonus. we've seen land launches the all 3 types of nuclear weapons were used to show and maybe to invite the west and ukraine to negotiate. so if you want, it is a russian way of inviting western countries and especially the government of ukraine to finally negotiate on russian terms. of course, w y l is wrong and controlling co is always wrong. and we appreciate your time if your analysis tonight but with winter approaching soldiers in ukraine will not just be battling the russian military. they will also be battling the elements of mother nature in eastern ukraine. preparations are under way to survive the winter, cold weapons and ammunition are crucial if the ukrainian military hopes to continue retaking ground seized by russia. but these soldiers and eastern ukraine's donnette screeching know that being prepared for
9:15 pm
freezing temperatures will also be key to their survival in the coming months, from sleeping bags to socks to trenches. they aren't just bracing for battle, they're bracing for the cold winter and the dawn buses. hell, it's a step climate with freezing nights, temperatures down to minus 30 degrees celsius. i felt it in 2014. it's hell. there are no forests, regular winds and very low temperatures. with loser cold. so either this trench is just 700 meters from russian positions, but life goes on for the soldiers of the 5th assault brigade, one meter under ground, they wash, eat, and sleep by a wood fire stove. there's also a sana built using it tutorial they found on the internet. it wasn't 3 days to build a sona. first, we dug the ditch them, recovered it with

9:19 pm
or it seems to say that this window of time that we have, by the end of this decade, to keep temperatures from going above 2 degrees celsius. we're not going to do what we have to do to stay within that time frame. is that what's that? how you read this report? clearly it's indicating that we're not doing anywhere near enough to be under 2 degrees or even better to try to get as close to $1.00 degrees as possible. which of course was the rallying cry for last year's climate summit in glasgow. keep 1.5 alive. the report sure is marginal progress. last year's report at this time showed that emissions would be about 14 percent higher in the year 2030 than they were in 2010. this year's report says they'll be about 10 percent higher. but contrast that with what the world scientists tell us, which is that to have a good chance of being well below 2 degrees celsius. we have to cut emissions by 45
9:20 pm
percent below 2010 levels in the next 7 years. clearly, there is a glaring, a absence of will and all too many countries to do that. and what kind of actions into governments need to take, especially we're talking about agriculture forming, being the source of this, this market increase in greenhouse gas emissions. well, actually agriculture is only one of the sectors we do have to deal with agriculture in terms of nitrous oxide and methane as you said. but of course the predominant gas has still carbon dioxide and that is largely generated by industrial, transportation, and energy sector emissions. one of the things we should stop doing is stop spending hundreds of billions of dollars a year, paying people to produce and burn more fossil fuels. the 1st rule, when you find yourself in a hole is to stop digging. we're still paying hundreds of billions of dollars a year in taxpayer subsidies to consumers and companies to do the wrong thing. we

need to put policies and measures in place that speed up the transition to renewable energy, solar, wind, other clean technologies to advanced battery technology, storage technology, electric vehicles. we know what we have to do, but there are very powerful forces that are lobbying furiously to preserve the advantages they have under the cock, current fossil fuel, energy based strategy. and what about the war in ukraine? we've got nations here in europe right now that are scrambling and saying yes to a temporary increase in fossil fuels in order to meet their energy demand to be can cuts really be expected from countries that are in the middle right now of the energy crisis? well, in the short term, you are going to see some emergency responses in germany and other countries with suspending shut down of nuclear plants are temporarily bringing coal on line. but the roaring ukraine really underscores the need to accelerate the transition off of

fossil fuels. if you want to get out from under energy blackmail that we're seeing for vladimir putin right down, of course we saw the opec product plus countries, a cut production by $2000000.00 barrels to try to raise prices. so really, the only way to address the climate crisis and the energy security crisis is to get off of fossil fuels even more quickly. and i hope that's the path that europe, the u. s. and other countries will stay on old admired joining us tonight from cairo. mr. my, we appreciate your time and your insights. thank you. good, good to be with you. take care. went to the united states now where it's less than 2 weeks until those crucial mid term elections. the latest polls point to an upswing for the republicans who are seeking to regain control of both houses of congress. that would be a major setback for president joe biden. going into the 2nd half of his term biden's party. the democrats are hoping for a strong turnout, especially among their core constituencies. and that includes black voters.
