i am lot cd managed by frappe od lou. ah ah ah, this is dw news live from berlin, the mid term elections in the us months of tumultuous campaigning, culminating in what has been a relatively smooth day of voting. there were long lines forming at pulling stations across the country in a vote, they could put control of congress in republican hands with politics as polarized as ever. many races remained too close to call. also coming up tonight wanted dead

or alive in ukraine, people are searching for loved ones. we've gone missing in the war. and dna test may be the only way to prove that some of them have died plus more caused by gays and lesbians to boycott. the 2022 world cup after acre tarry world cup ambassador tells a reporter that almost sexuality is caused by a mental illness. ah, i'm brain gov. it's good to have you with this. it is a 1 o'clock in the morning here in berlin, 7 pm in washington, and on the east coast of the united states. holes have already closed in some states on this mid term election day, voters are casting ballots for the entire house of representatives. that's 435 seats, as well as about a 3rd the seats in the u. s. senate. the decisions made at the ballot box could
1:02 am
mean a change in the balance of power on capital hill. the democrats have held both chambers of congress for the past 2 years, but polls suggest that they could lose the house to the republicans, which would derail president biden's agenda, or then 45000000 early votes were cast before to day. those ballots, of course, must now be counted that plus the fact that many races are very close, it all means that the results could take deeds to be finalized or reporters have been traveling across the united states, asking voters what matters most of them as they go to the ballot box, reelection is important, but this one, it feels almost like a presidential. if i humping raising all the people, i know, and i mean, so be able to make a difference. the people who represent us are mostly, you know, hostage in areas that are men. and i'd like there to be more diverse representation

. the state of our democracy is probably the television for me. i'm hearing that will be taken over by radical, our religious zealots. it's pretty close. i'm hoping that citizens such as myself, actually get out and exercise their rights to protect the democracy. if we don't go out and vote, we're not going to have our voices heard or, or bring in our correspondence with me. she was gone to, she's following these mid term election results flores from washington dc. so me, there are reports coming in that song holding stations in the state of north carolina. also, the east coast will remain open past 7 30 pm due to the sheer numbers of people who are still waiting to capture books. are we getting reports of other states doing the same thing? a brent we have seen some states reporting that they had some problems with voting machines. for example, there's one district in pennsylvania that is also extended voting hours for that reason. and also for the sheer number of people who are a voting. i mean, brent,
1:04 am
we are seeing a high level of voter enthusiasm. our producer david sloan just sent me some accurate numbers indicating that michigan the state of michigan has received 1700000 ballad submitted before leading up to election day. and the states of georgia and ohio, brent, you know, those are 2 key a states swing states in an election. these states also have seen record numbers of early voting. and the state of wisconsin already to day is indicating that they have seen record numbers or very high numbers, rather of youth of young people coming out to vote. so again, it seems like a doozy as him among voters is very high. but it's not that surprising. if you look at the come campaigners that we've seen on both sides of the aisle who have been out and about trying to drum up support for their parties. ahead of this vote, the republicans have been telling they're based, this is an essential vote that people's lives have gotten worse under this president joe biden. and under the democrats who control congress at the moment and that they have to go to the ballads, go to the polls rather to vote. the democrats out of office. on the other side of
1:05 am
the aisle brent democrats have been trying to hammer home along their voters. that this is an essential election that democracy itself is on the ballot. and in order to protect things like reproductive rights, but also democracy in itself, that they have to go to the polls as well. so i think that's what we're seeing reflected in some of these early ring numbers and some of the turn out so far and enthusiasm, as you say, has been very high in now on the amount of patients that we're going to need also needs to be high is going to take a while to get all of these values counted when that happens. uh, what should we be preparing to hear in terms of results well, brent in the polls or any indication, it doesn't look like it will be a very uh, good outcome for the democrats. the polls up until to day have indicated that the republicans are favored to win the house of representatives. they only need of 5 seats to take control of the house, and it looks like they will do so fairly easily. there have been very competitive
1:06 am
in a number of races, even in very blue states and democratic states and in the senate really has been neck and neck. we see very close races in states like pennsylvania states like georgia, nevada, arizona, and wisconsin as well. and all that means that it's going to be very difficult for the democrats to hold on to that razor thin majority that they have right now in the senate. so the outcome at the moment doesn't look particularly positive for the democrats. and we know that it really has been a back and forth year where we've looked at polls and looked at one point in the summer. like democrats might have an advantage in keeping the senate. but in the last, really several weeks. it brent, we seen the number shift again as the economy inflation to have come back as the top a topic rather on voters minds here. so that's why we're seen some of those shifts and, and we're gonna have to wait and see what the numbers that a hold. but i would say right now, according to the polls, it looks like republicans could take both chambers of congress and this major
1:07 am
change in the balance of power in congress on capital hill, were you or what would that me, what will that be been for the presidency of jo bought it mean a whole lot, brent. i mean the highlight of his presidency as he has said so far has been his inflation reduction an act. this was legislation that was passed narrow, low, narrowly through congress that does things like a lower prescription drug costs and also invest a lot in clean energy for all of our viewers watching us international. we know that we're leaders are gathered at cop 27 in egypt, and the climate change has been high on the agenda for the biden presidency. well, if the republicans take control of both houses of congress, they have said they're going to prioritize fossil fuels. again, oil and gas production to bring down gas prices that they could thwart or present biden's climate agenda. so really the consequences there for him could be a very significant you know, be used as a museum, was grounded with the latest to knives on this mid term election night in the

united states. so me think well, voters say that the most important issues for them in the selection were inflation and the economy. that's not surprising, considering what people are now paying to day for gasoline and groceries compared to just a year ago. but there are other issues ranking high among voters as well. we have this report. ah, it's the economy, stupid. that famous phrase coined by bill clinton's and by the in the 1992 presidential election, still rings true in the 2022 mid terms. the economy and in particular, inflation the growing cost of everyday life, host, and part by the pandemic, and the world ukraine regularly. poles among the top issues u. s. voters care about after reaching a 40 peak and june, inflation still hovers around 8 percent. and many people want the government to deal with it. now. abortion is another issue that gets them
1:09 am
too hot under the collar. i always, ideologically divisive. the issue has been thrust into the spotlight since the u. s . supreme court overturned the constitutional right to abortion. that had been guaranteed since 1973 and it's now a state by state issue. and many women opposed to travel to other states to access safe and legal abortion pay. when religious conservative, it's a big when they don't want to give up. mm. any long i have is it's a severe violation of human rights that needs to be dealt with starting at the fall of folks then there are a range of other issues who's perceived importance often follows partisan lines. as well as another political mantra. all politics is local black voters,
1:10 am
site crime as a top concerned the selection. so do many older republican meaning voters. the letter also care about immigration and gun right? we got to use everybody to counteract that usage without their democratic leaning vote is a likely to came or about climate change about education, algebra to rights and democracy itself. so ah, last year storming of the u. s. capital, by trumps. the boot is, is still a hot button issue for many democrats. they see it as proof that democracies increasingly under threat. and they want urgent action to safeguard democratic institutions. but if the pull the anything to go by and it really is the economy stupid january 6th when be the issue that the sites the elections let's go through these issues with me here at the big table now was my colleague in stacy
1:11 am
bib and she's been following these mid term elections, the early exit polls telling us 46 percent of voters say that joe binds policies have been hurting the country. they're right there. i mean that that's a big whammy for the democrats. it's not a good feel or good luck, but it also speaks to the fact that democrats have a real problem with controlling the narrative. if you look at the numbers on the economy has grown up on it, unemployment is down, wages are up. yes, inflation is is higher, but it's lower than most of the develop oral at lower than it is here in germany than it is. and most of europe talk about that. play it up, play up your strengths, get your base out because it's a numbers game and if you can get your base out, you have a better chance of winning. yeah. yeah, the big it, where do we know the democrat, particularly the president talked a lot more about the threat to democracy instead of the, the economic threat from inflation. and who was the president who were the
1:12 am
republicans talking to 70 percent of people voting. we understand or 45 years old or older. that tells us that young people, 1st of all the, they're not coming up to vote. well, it's not this huge doubt deluge that we were predicting from very young people, but it's higher than they have been. and other mid terms, and when the numbers are this close, you need every vote that you can get. so it's okay that there aren't as many younger voters as before, and immigrants were counting on gym z coming out 1819 year olds coming out millions of new and, and they did a lot they which pushed the idea about a student loan forgiveness bite and went out and had take talkers accompany him to the white house into the supreme court. so he's made an effort, but also we don't really know exactly how many of these jens, the voters, there were because democrats are mostly voting via the mail and early voting. but
1:13 am
when you have these melon ballots, you can't really talk about who is voting and, and where. let's talk before you run out of time about the role that money plays in these elections. this, of course, for our viewers around the world and it's hard to believe $6000000000.00 is spent by republicans and democrats on just on t v spots for these mid term elections alone was that money well spent? i mean, the rest, the world looks at that and thinks it's absolutely crazy, but it's money spent because they, the numbers are so tight and these, these races are so close and they're trying to get out their base. i don't think that the mid terms were particularly ones where either party thought they were going to flip new voters. i think this is one where they were trying to grab their base. and so that's what they spent the money on. it's crazy. but that's what they did the $6000000000.00 grab. it done so much with that. my go to giving it to us.
1:14 am
stacy's always thank you. good to see the state of arizona in america self worth is home to one of the most watched contests in the selection. the republican candidate for governor, she's been echoing former president donald prompt claims that the 2020 election was stolen. that's despite official investigations, the court challenges that have found those allegations to be baseless. we'll get our corresponded in phoenix in just a moment. but 1st here's a look at the candidate carry lake. miss carrie lake. the former fox news tv host is becoming the new figurehead of tramps to make america great. again, republicans, her main calling card. this is called joe biden, and illegitimate crisis was, i mean, he lost the election initial be in the white house. we had a corrupt election, it was that promotion of the big steel lie about the 2020 presidential election that drew trump support. and his seal of approval was what she needed to go from
1:15 am
regional celebrity to republican candidate for arizona governor. here's how trump recounts the moment their political alliance caught fire. i met her and almost immediately i said this one is in grad about an a person who you just saw, one of the hardest politicians in this world. i think at this moment that i think it's going to be there way for a long time. she is incredible. like tom lake is tough on immigration and anti abortion. but most of all, she has what it takes to command a political congregation. god is with us, he has chosen me, and he has chosen you. and i don't believe for one second that god makes mistakes. that talent has led many to tip her as a potential running may to trump. if he runs again in 2020 full, he supported the police. are las go down to phoenix,
1:16 am
arizona. my colleague in is paul. she is standing by in phoenix. in is i want to talk about caroline in just a moment. but 1st, let's talk about the actual voting that's going on right now. i understand what we've got, what 2 more hours until poles close in arizona. what can you tell us? that's right, brenda and the outcome has been massive today, and also ahead of the election day over a 3rd of all arizonans kind of casa de appalling, early voting. but today we went to like 5 or 6 polling stations, and there were all peg. but just to give you a little bit on up, i've an idea and we are at a carrie late, even she will be here later today to probably announcer victory yet. let's talk about carrie lake for a moment. you know, she's a former tv news anchor. she knows how to talk to a crowd, talk to a camera. how important is she in the donald trump equation here?
1:17 am
i mean, some people have said she's, you know, donald trump's flavor of the month. right. we just heard a donna from saying that she is hearty refer to her as being sexy, and it is actually an interesting. in the primaries, donald trump endorsed her and my pens, the former vice president, i endorsed her competitors. so yes indeed, she is very close to donald trump. there are many signs all over arizona showing a her and donald trump and you know what they do have in common. they have a couple of things in common but most and mainly is the fact that both of them deny the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. and i just listened in earl, i just actually went to a, to the paul where carrie lake that kind of gave in her vote today. and she was again repeating saying that the 2020 election was stalling stolen. so in that regard,
1:18 am
they both are donald trump and her on the same ticket in talk to me about the worries about election integrity in the united states to be how well wide spread are. are these doubts it is very wide spread specifically in the more independent and the republican part of members. so let's have a listen. we talked to some, a voters today here in arizona. people and government right now don't care about the fact that we are deeply in debt, that there is great inflation. they are immigrants are running into the country without any stopping them. nobody seems to care. our vote is super important is here in arizona. the latino community vote is so important. we have a lot of numbers, but we don't necessarily have the power that to represent us. and so that's why
1:19 am
it's so important for every single person that can vote to come here and vote today . i don't trust the outcome of this election. gonna have to, you know, i didn't like the, you know, outcome or the last one, but you gotta move on or get a fix all that stuff. you know? so i think they matter because i'm a woman and i'm also lesbian. so my rights are definitely at stake. and that's why i'm here to vote. so brand, that's what we heard today. so people raised the issue of inflation, they don't feel heard or by washington. some of them are really worried that their rights, as women, as gay people, are taken away and many do fear that the election system is not to be trusted. so if we assume that the mid terms are going to be a republican sweep, what does this allow us then to see when we look at the 2020 for presidential election? right,
1:20 am
so 1st and we've been talking about that in your so earlier your other guests, stacy, and so me, 1st of all, it means that both of the houses might be taken away and that my, from the democrats of that might be very difficult for president biden. and the white house to govern. but what is also important to understand for our international audience, it's not just about senators and governors in this election. also, other levels of politicians and lawmakers will be elected to day. and what do they do then in 2024 they will be the ones to say these elections were raked or nods. so this is much more than just about the midterms. this is about the future and who by the end of the day decides of elections were correct or not? that's right. it's a different story when election deniers become the people who have the power to call election in his fall in phoenix, arizona in his we will be coming to you again as our coverage of the u. s. midterm
1:21 am
elections continues. thank you. art, let's take a look now at some of the other stories that are making headlines around the world . countries vulnerable to the effects of climate change have pleaded for urgent financial support from richer countries at the cop 27 climate conference in egypt. many industrialized countries have so far was avoided the question of compensation, but the issue was put on the conferences agenda for the 1st time. this year. a french charity shipped, carrying more than $200.00 rescued migrants is heading for france after italy refused to allow it to dock ocean. viking is one of several rescue ships engaged in a stand off with italy's new right wing government and now intends to seek a safe port in france. as the more in ukraine continues, many people are looking for missing loved ones. some of them are fear dead, but in a number of cases no bodies, no corpses have been found that has left relatives hoping that many people may
