is the only one i see for lucky music under the swastika starts november 19th on d w. ah ah, this is dw news live from berlin, the mid term elections in the us months of to much was campaigning, culminating in what has been a relatively smooth day of voting. there were long lines forming it all the stations across the country to day and a vote that could put control of congress back in republican hands w news coverage at the u. s. midterm election starts right now.
2:01 am
awe i bring gov. it's good to have you with this. it is to in the morning here in berlin, 8 pm on the east coast of the united states. early results are starting to come in as voting ends in the key battleground states of georgia and florida. we're going to have numbers for you in just a moment, but 1st, the big picture to night, voters casting ballads for the entire house of representatives today. that's 435 seats. and they're casting boats for about a 3rd of the seats in the u. s, senate, the decisions made at the ballot box could mean a change in the balance of power. on capital hill, the democrats have held both chambers of congress for the past 2 years polls suggestion now that they could lose the house to the republicans derailing president biden's agenda, or reporters. they have been travelling across the united states, asking voters what matters most to them as they go to the ballot box. reelection is
2:02 am
important, but this one, it feels almost like a presidential, i humping raising all the people. i know, and i mean, so be able to make a difference. the people who represent us are mostly, you know, hostage in areas that are men. and i'd like there to be more diverse representation . the state of our democracy is probably the television for me. i'm hearing that will be taken over by radical. our religious zealots. it's pretty close. so i'm hoping that citizens such as myself, actually get out and exercise their rights to protect the democracy. if we don't go out and vote, we're not going to have our voices heard. i only bring in our correspondence to me . she was gone as she joins me now from capitol hill. see me just after 8 pm. there were you are, this is the, our were when the 1st flood of results is expected. what should we be preparing for? you know,
2:03 am
we're all waiting eagerly to see what those 1st results will hold. we've just seen that in the state of florida that the senator marco rubio has won his race there. that's for our international viewers who might recognize his name. he's someone who has a big name in the republican party, but what we're looking for is to see whether some of those races in the house of representatives are going to be as in the senate, rather will be as competitive as they've looked to be in the polls ahead of the selection, brent and the way things have looked for democrats has not been very good. the republicans are favored to win a both the house of representatives and possibly the senate as well. those races in the senate are really looking to come down to the why you mentioned the state of georgia, that's one of the closest senate races in the country right now. that was a dead heat going into election day. that to give you an idea of just how ado sciatic voters are brent. we just had some numbers coming into us. it looks like a early voting has been at a record high in the states of ohio and in the state of georgia as well. and we
2:04 am
just got a notice from our producer here, david sloane, who said that in milwaukee election officials, milwaukee, in the state of wisconsin, another a state where we're seeing a very tight senate race. they have indicated that the turnout of registered voters is at around 70 to 75 percent. that's very high. so what we are going to see, it looks like brent is very high turn out numbers. we don't know if that's going to help the democrats, but until now we are seeing the polls indicate that the democrats will suffer a loss in the house of representatives and will have a very hard time to hold onto the senate. yeah, that would be the turnover is very impressive. 75 percent 80 percent very high in the united states can compared to what we're used to seeing, assuming that there is going to be a republican sweep of congress. what is this going to mean been for the future or jer, biden's produce? that's a really important question brand. i mean, if you imagine president biden, the white house and a republican control congress, it could be
2:05 am
a very difficult next 2 years. first and foremost, president biden held his landmark legislation as he called it, the inflation reduction act. that his legislation, that narrow narrowly past congress that does things like a reduce the prices of prescription drugs. it also invests in clean energy climate change in making climate change. a priority with something that president biden town it while the republicans have said if they win both houses of congress, they will repeal the inflation reduction act. they will put a priority back on fossil fuels and they will a stein me president biden's efforts to invest in climate change all the more important, brent. as we see rural leaders gathered at cop 27 in egypt working on ways to tackle climate change. another item that is going to be interesting to watch brand is support for ukraine. now, some leading republicans had indicated in the lead up to this election day that they might not be willing to support or to stand behind president biden's a support for ukraine. until now. we know congress has
2:06 am
a sent billions of dollars worth of aid to ukraine, and some republicans are saying, well, with the economy here in the u. s. suffering as it is. we don't know that we can continue to write quote, a blank check for ukraine. so that's going to be interesting to see whether the tenor of that support changes. and another important point brand i want to point out could become uncomfortable for president biden. the republicans say if they win the house of representatives, they will launch investigations investigations into the u. s. as a messy withdrawal from afghanistan also into his son hunter biden. and his financial dealing so all of that could spend a lot of trouble for the president. yeah, you bring up a lot of good points there. climate change of support for ukraine. the russian invasion nerve speaks to the fact that these mid term elections ever real meaning for the rest of the world. not just for the united states, w similar misconduct, the latest flight on capitol hill in washington. so me think voters say that the most important issues for them in this election were inflation and b economy. not
2:07 am
surprising when you consider what people are paying to day for gas at the pump, as well as groceries at the supermarkets compared to just a year ago. but there are other issues ranking high among voters as well. we have this report. it's the economy, stupid. the famous phrase coined by bill clinton's advisor, him in 1992 presidential election, still rings true in the 2022 mid terms. the economy, and in particular inflation. the growing cost of every day life caused in part by the pandemic and the war in ukraine regularly. poles among the top issues u. s. voters care about after reaching a faulty peak in june, inflation still hovers around 8 percent. and many people want the government to deal with it. now, abortion isn't the issue that gets voters hot under the collar homes. i did logically divisive. the issue is being thrust into the spotlight since the u. s.
2:08 am
supreme court overturned the constitutional right to abortion, which had been guaranteed, since 1973. it's now state by state issue. and many women are forced to travel to the states to access safe and legal abortion care. for religious conservatives. it's a big when they don't want to give up for others. it's a severe violation of human rights, but needs to be dealt with. starting at the ballot box. i don't know a range of, of the issues whose perceived importance often follows parties on lines as well as another political mantra. all politics is local black vote to cite crime as a top concern miss election. so did many older republican leaning voters. we got the latter also care about immigration and gun rights. democratic leaning,
2:09 am
voters are likely to care more about climate change education, l g, b, t q rights, and democracy itself. last just storming of the u. s. capital by trump, supporters is still a hot button issue for many democrats. they see to prove that democracy is increasingly and a threat, and that they want urgent action to safeguard democratic institutions. but if the polls or anything to go by and it really is the economy stupid, it won't be the issue that decides the election and got him here in the studio now is my colleague stacy been, she's been following the selection with us all night. and we wanna start by talking about money, $6000000000.00 spent this mid term election by both parties just on t. v spots alone has that been money well spent? well, it does let you know how serious this mid term elections are and how close some of
2:10 am
these races are. and you are talking about the cost of it. in the commonwealth of pennsylvania, they spent nearly $375000000.00 in georgia, $270000000.00. and what's on the line is the course of the us will bite and be a lame duck. in the 2nd half of his presidency, or will he be able to get some things done that that's what's really on the table. we know what the democrats wants. what we don't know is what will happen with the republicans, but there was a fear about, you know, abortion being right there taken away nationwide. why nothing happening and gun reform. so the cost of doing business at that moment and there have been words about maybe violence associated with this or workshop that we know that there been were threats made against politicians leading up to this election that said this election is mid terms. today has been a rather smooths election so far, and it's early,
2:11 am
though that's the thing. and what we're concerned about is what happens next. so a lot of the, some of these districts are already sharing the numbers. and so in some places, republicans are up and other places, democrats are up, but that is going to change because of the way people vote the nature of things. now, a lot of people are voting early or they're voting by mail. and so depending on which group of voted votes are counted 1st, that depends how the numbers are going to swing back and forth are usually are stronger in the early voting, which is exactly which is right now in the early results get that we're getting, it's almost all right, but yeah, and like in georgia for example with raphael war neck. yeah, i'm in that senator race. he's up right now, but how long is he going to remain up and will he stay up? that's the thing we don't know. but with this trump mega world, of questioning the election and threatening to over throw and not accepting the
2:12 am
outcome, that's a serious problem. and leading up to this, like you said, there was an increase in threats from poll workers, volunteers. nancy pelosi husband speak of the house with an attack with a hammer. so political violence is definitely a problem. it's definitely a risk. and so we'll see. yeah, it does appear that it's not going to go away. and let's talk a little bit about who is voting. 70 percent of the people voting in the mid term elections? we understand or 45 years old or older. that is going to fuel this. the perception that this is government for the senior citizens, the united states or the older americans. but it does give fuel to the argument that young people just do not come out to vote. well to be fair. there is an increase in the number of jens, the people who have been the host have voted in this midterm election. is it as big
2:13 am
as other groups? no, but when the races are as close as they are. so razor thin, the, all every vote counts every number helps. what about the trend of latinos gravitating towards the republicans? it's also something that the democrats were not counting on even 2 years ago. if we had this conversation that would not have been right. that's the thing that's going on with nevada. the 1st latina sen, she's having a very hard time with her republican counterpart. and it's because some of the latino voters are holding her responsible for inflation and for the cost of gas. and so for all of these things, it's almost like a proxy against biden. so yeah. alright, stacy's always, we appreciate the analysis. we see what happens with these numbers. if they come in tonight, france the you are state of arizona in the southwest of the united states. it is
2:14 am
home to one of the most watched contests in this election. republican candidate for governor has echoed former president, donald trump's claims that the 2020 election was stolen and advanced despite official investigations and court challenges there found those claims to be baseless when we go to our corresponded in phoenix in a moment. but 1st, want to take a closer look at the candidate carrie lake. miss carrie lake, the former fox news tv host is becoming the new figurehead of tramps make america great. again. republicans the main calling card. this is called joe biden, an illegitimate present was that mean? he lost the election initially be in the white house. we had a corrupt election. it was that promotion of the big steel lie about the 2020 presidential election that drew trump support. and his seal of approval was what she needed to go from regional celebrity, to republican candidate for arizona, governor. he is how term free counts the moment their political alliance caught

fire. i met her and almost immediately i said this one is in grad about an a person who you just saw, one of the hardest politicians in this world. i think at this moment that i think it's going to be there way for a long time. she's incredible. like tom lake is tough on immigration and anti abortion, but most of all she has what it takes to command a political congregation. god is with us. he has chosen me and he has chosen you and i don't believe for one second that god makes mistakes. that talent has led many to tip her as a potential running may to trump. if he runs again in 2020 full, he supported the police. are you we want to go now? the phoenix, arizona where my colleague in his coal is stanley by she's following the res fours there in his i want to talk about kerry lake in just a moment. but 1st,
2:16 am
the polls closing in an hour there in, in arizona. what can you tell us about voter turnout? reckon they're supposed to close in one hour because there is a, there are some issues we hear that in more than 60 appalling stations, there were some problem with computers. and we hear that the republican party put in a request to extend a the polling times. why is that? because like more than the 3rd of the arizona borders voted early normally. oh averagely. this is like democrats and republicans tend to go vote on the very day, so they try to, you know, to extend the hours of voting to make sure that all of the republicans can get in there. what would i'm here at an event from the republican party kerry lake is expected to speak in an hour or so, and dana is with me. dana is um, from eg, electrifying so many people here in arizona. you know, she's
2:17 am
a woman of principle and of conviction. she says what she's going to do, she has a very detailed plan about the border, which is a real problem here in arizona and now it spread throughout the united states. so we need to do something about illegal immigration. some people i saw that the ruling of the supreme court regarding the protection of abortion, a rights might change the outcome of these election in favor of the democrats. what do you make of that? i think while it's important to some there, so many other issues that override that issue as far as important, like have crime and they immigration and it just, the expanse. inflation is huge. here in arizona, we have a very high inflation rate sonata. question, dana, and do you believe, do you trust the system, the democratic system here in the united states? the election system, i should say, i am a little leery, but i'm hoping that we have enough good people who are watching of wrapping. thank
2:18 am
you so much. there was an important insight. thank you, dana. so a brand that's exactly the main topics. it's inflation, it's immigration, and for some it is still the question. are these election valid? protect it? and when i hear that better they're talking to you, it is, it makes me wonder the support for carrie lake. how much is it dependent on the endorsement from donald trump? it does matter. you know, pensa or the former vice president endorsed during the primaries. her opponent, it really matters that donald trump endorsed carrie lake, but as it is really the way as she performs, i saw her a couple of times today. but i also saw her at a big a republican convention some weeks ago, and she really knows how to electrify the audience. she is a former new thank her. she was in tv for more than 20 years. so she knows how to

play people. and just taking this and extrapolating this across the united states, the entire country unit of what omens do you see tonight coming from the voters are concerning what we're going to see in 2 years time in the 2024 presidential election. well terry lagers, although most of the republicans running here in arizona are basically lexan deniers. and the problem is if these people are loaded into office they by the end of the day will decide in 2024 if the elections are correct or not. so it might be by the end of the day election deniers to decide if the elections will be accepted or so. therefore this at this stage is so interesting and so important because indeed it could be omen. what we see in other parts of the united states. yeah, it will be interesting of see if 2024 is the year when election deniers become

election verified using his full in phoenix, arizona force to nights in a thank where the world is watching the u. s, mid terms of where the, the outcome could impact u. s. foreign policy. the war in ukraine remains are concerned for a lot of the american voters. some, however, are questioning how much longer the u. s. can support ukraine's fight against russia. russia's war against ukraine is one. the u. s. has not been able to look away from americans have already sent more than $60000000000.00 worth of assistance into this was a democratic president, joe biden has promised to continue to do all it takes to defend ukraine. sovereignty as americans head to the polls in the mid term elections, us congress is expected to turn more republican. and the big question everybody is asking is,
2:21 am
what impacts that will have on us assistance to ukraine and other allies? well, the answer depends on who you are. there will be enough support, no matter who controls which house and given president biden still in the white house. so i, i am quite confident that very, very strong support will continue for ukraine. yet one prominent republican stuff, it's sending a very different signal ahead of the elections. kevin mccarthy is the top republican in the house of representatives. he says he believes americans would no longer be willing to write a blank check to ukraine in the face of a biting recession back home. after all, the soaring prices of gas, food, and housing top, the list of worries for ordinary americans. democrats see that a republican majority in congress could soon make ukraine a domestic bargaining chip. but poll,
2:22 am
so more than 2 thirds of americans back us assistance to ukraine, even if there is a republican majority in the house and or the senate. i think perhaps the experience of working together are so closely and so confidentially and with so much trust on sanctions might perhaps help if you lose changes of trade protectionism in general. or over the larger question of how to deal with malignant chinese behavior in the trade and technology route. i'm going to say i'm cautiously optimistic on that woundings that china may try to invade taiwan rather sooner than later could become the next test for the west. and for americans willingness to pay a price for global leadership or let's take a look now,
