major city to fall after the russian invasion and the only regional capital under russian control. the move is being called a major setback for moscow with some atlas saying it could be a turning point in the war. here however, is urging caution ukrainian troops slowly advance on house on the city has been held by russia since early on in the war. ukrainian president followed me as the lensky has urged caution. and these soldiers, a wary of possible traps left behind by the retreating russian army for service orders that we will meet with step by step, we will reach victory, norma, we will not rush losing people on our way with which the russian troops are scared of the law, they didn't expect so much resistance from our side. and in recent weeks, ukrainian forces have been closing in on hassan and say they've already re taken several towns in the region. russia has been relocating tens of thousands of

residents and the straits of house on a now virtually empty rushes commander in ukraine announced the retreat in a military briefing on state t. v. on wednesday workers, he argued it was no longer possible to keep supplying hassan rewarded more for your book burkle. when my foreclosure nibbled, this is a very difficult decision, but we will be saving the lives of our service men and the combat capability of our troops, which is necessary to stay on the right bank in a limited area. russia's defense ministry says troops have already begun moving out of the city. a forced pull out of russian troops from her san would be a significant blow to vladimir putin. only weeks ago, the russian president announced what he called the forever annexation of the house on region, along with 3 others in a ceremony in moscow. her son was the 1st major city

captured by russia at the start of the war and for a taking it could allow ukraine to win back more lost territory in southern areas, including crimea, which russia illegally seized in 2014 for we can talk to our correspondence mathias bottega in chief and fury were shut out in rigor. you're a, let's begin with you. russia says it's begun withdrawing from house on what does this say about russia's military strength in ukraine? well, any troop withdrawal is an admission of weakness as a commander of the russian troops in ukraine's throw beacon. we just saw him in the report justified by seeing that he wanted to save the lives of the soldiers because he saw no chance in defending the russian positions in the house on an i'd like to point out that the 4 days that russians have been urging the people of your son to
4:05 pm
leave the city at scenes, it seems as if the russian military leadership had been planning this withdrawal for days. russia occupied her son in early match end, or annexed it in later september, along with other occupy territories. beg then, that the kremlin made an announcement that russia would stay in care to san forever . it was a big propaganda blow. and the fact that the russians are withdrawing their troops just a month after that exclusion of concern at least says that things are far from successful from the russian point of view on the front lines. but even if this step, martin is reasonable from a military point of view politically. however, this miserable is a disaster for the gram mathias, the ukrainian army said it's been making gains in the past 24 hours. but officials or a bit skeptical about russia's course on withdraw announcement, why is that?
4:06 pm
because it sounds to be good to good to, to the truth. the thing is that russia has announced this for a few has hinted at edu, re, has just elaborated on it. has evacuated, people has been preparing very visibly this with drawl for many weeks. that's not how russia has been acting before in this war before when they were under pressure either. and they were liberal, they were liberating areas retreating from areas that they had been occupying. they would either have done so very quickly in an organized manner or chaotic, a li, just retreating like in the heart of region. and so the fear is just that this might be a trap from the russians, that for example, the russians might withdraw from most of the areas, drawing the ukranian army quickly into the city where a few units would wait for them and would engage them in st. battles that might be very costly, that for example, one scenario that's possible, that's why the ukrainians have said that they would move on very cautiously. if
4:07 pm
russia does withdraw our to the south, of course, on, across the ne pro river mathias, or if that happens in ukraine advances what's likely to happen next in that region . and there will be a river that would be very difficult to cross over the bridges. i destroyed the 2 bridges that were there. the russians will f, 40 fight on the left bank of the river and it would be very difficult to get over there. moreover, the city of castle, which sits just on the river would most likely be shell. it would be in the line of fire, so this would be advancing further would be very difficult. what ukraine has done so far. what we've seen is that they are looking at their whole frontline and they're exploring where the weaknesses are. and that's where they will move in, so we might even not see them crossing the river. we might see them try to come
4:08 pm
from behind, try to move on. for example, in this operational region, which is a little bit more east or at other parts of the front, like we've seen it before. when you create announced it's counter offensive in the south in the house own region. they didn't really make many gains there, but they force the russian troops to relocate to that area. and then they came in at another end of the front, a hark of region in the north, and were able to take territory quickly there because the russians were weaker in that place. jury, i know you're monitoring a russian media. have you seen any reaction yet among the russian people to the withdrawal announcement? well, this news didn't come as a surprise because a few days ago the russian media reported that the russian army my to make undesirable but probable decision. and a few days ago. instructions for the russian media were created all obviously in the kremlin, reportedly on how to correctly present the withdrawal in the propaganda shows.
4:09 pm
obviously, the media would advise to say that the military, they're ation in kennesaw, wasn't the most difficult one for the russian army. and that ukraine needs to show the combat capability of it's what they call it, terrorist units with the aim of asking for new house from the west. and as for the public perception, it was remarkable that it wasn't the president couldn't who announced to the withdrawal, but a general who took responsibility instead of putin as sir put in can now say it wasn't me at any time, but i can replace general sort of akin with another to know, i think a time, but what putin cannot do is to restore russian people's confidence in military success in ukraine. that confidence is likely to be significantly reduced now. okay, i have to leave it there. you are. thank you so much. you're a rash. chateau in rigor earned our correspond. mathias ballinger in cube. thank you very much. the both the ukrainian president says he

wants to start raising funds to buy a fleet of what he called seed drones, chip used, and c drones to attack the russian black sea fleet at the end of october. and according to the ukrainian military, they hit 3 russian ships. these images taken at the end of october captured the 1st attack of it's kind what you're seeing is the view from a ukrainian c drone, speeding towards its target rushes black sea fleet. near the crimean port of savannah to paul, also known as an unmanned surface vehicle. it comes under fire from the russian military. there were reportedly between 6 and 8 nautical drones involved in this assault. what remains unclear is the damage caused to russia's fleet. 3 vessels were reportedly hit according to naval

analyst h, i sutton. the small vessel was developed by modifying a jet ski. it has an ala minium hole, and possibly russian designed fuses that detonate a warhead. it also includes a remote control camera and sends video feedback to ukraine's command and control center in these images shot earlier in the attack and under the cover of darkness. it's believe the see drone captures, shots of moscow's flagship, the admiral marker of experts agree that these c, drones are extremely cost effective. they're relatively inexpensive, unmanned, and can cause large amounts of damage. i spoke earlier with arthur holland, michelle, a researcher on emerging military technologies. he's the author of eyes in the sky, a book about ariel drones. i asked him if ukraine's unmanned c drones can seriously damage, brush rushes black safely. you know,
4:12 pm
i'm not actually convinced that moving forward, it's sort of guaranteed that they will cause serious damage. russia is definitely going to respond to, to this attack, but that's actually an important point because they will definitely be a nuisance. they have, in a way, opened up a new front, so to speak, that russia now has to defend against russia is going to have to invest precious new resources to protect its fleet from these drones. doing things like setting up barriers, increasing patrols and deploying additional defense weapons. this, of course alone is itself a pretty significant tactical and strategic even effect. even if the drones don't actually end up sinking any, any ships to spelt aerial drones, those, the kinds of drones people are more familiar with russia has been deploying so called kamikaze drones against
4:13 pm
a ukraine with devastating effects and both sides using surveillance, drones. what impact have these drones had on the war? so i think they've had a twofold impact. one is, as you said, that they have caused some pretty significant damage to both sides, either as a result of drones to directly attacking targets or actually very significantly by providing surveillance support for all the weapons. i don't necessarily think this compares to the scale of impact and damage from, say, artillery or ground operations. but it has forced both sides, as i mentioned earlier, to have to dedicate really significant and precious resources to count drone defense. something that military's didn't have to do and in previous was the other impact is i think, narrative and this is really significant. i've talked about this before on on the show. drones are impressive. they're frightening that technologically advanced. and
4:14 pm
i mean, we're talking about them today because they are very good at generating headlines in addition to actually being affected weapons and both sides of use, this aspect of drones to their advantage, to kind of shape the narrative of, of the war and, and that i think is gonna be, continue to be a really important effect that they will have on, on the battlefield or her holland. michel, they're now u. s. president joe biden has welcomed the results of the mid term elections after his party fared better than expected u. s. media had predicted huge gains for the republicans, but these failed materialize. however, biden's democrats look set to lose control of the house of representatives in the battle for the upper chamber. the senate is on a knife's edge. with 3 states still left to declare. there was a spring in the step of the u. s. president, as he faced reporters at the white house, the way to pre election fears perhaps lifted from his shoulders after better than
4:15 pm
expected midterm results. it was a good day, i think, for democracy. and i think it was a good day for america, or shoot me a little hoarse. our democracy has been tested in recent years, but they're with their vote. so the american people spoken to once again that democracy is who we are. this was a big task for j biden, who couldn't hide his glee when congratulating democrats, who helped see off a predicted republican sir joe wire revelation in graduate joe mike griffin. better and he was your congratulations. and so her mom are the democrats, make them better than even the president expected. who with vote still being counted, there is still much to play for what happens here in nevada could be pivotal to who wins. control at the senate is one of 3 states that could swing the us up a house back into a publican hands. patients now the watch word here with hundreds of staff working
4:16 pm
to process pallets another is georgia where the race between democratic incumbent, rafael, warnock, and republican challenger, herschel walker, will now go into a run off in december. at the end of the day, everyone wants to know that we have honest and fair elections. and we do. i asked the voters to come out and vote one last time. just a few days ago, former president donald trump's mood had been buoyant, as he celebrated initial republican successes. he hum pigs many of the names on the ballot in key states. but in true trump style, he's now described the vote as somewhat disappointing in a message to supporters on his own social platform, whilst also hailing a very big victory with more or less crossover, to our correspondence, sumi, some oscar under in washington. so me, former president don't trauma claims. this is
4:17 pm
a victory for republicans. the current president, the joe biden says the opposite. can they both be right in a way partly yes, i mean you can't get past the fact that some republicans did have a very good election day. there were some congressional races, for example, in the very blue state of new york that republicans actually picked up. and let's not forget florida where the governor, randa santos republican, absolutely demolished his opposition and did trigger this red wave at least across the state of florida. i don't think donald trump is too happy about that, but we'll get back to that in a little bit. i do think president biden's narrative is a bit closer to the truth. i mean, traditionally the party in the white house gets thumped in mid term elections. terry, we saw that no bama years. we saw that in the clinton years. this was not a thumping, i mean, democrats held on to competitive seats even if they lose the house of representatives. it's not by much and they might still hold on to the senate. so of those 2 takes, i would say that president biden's is more accurate or to the mid terms mean
4:18 pm
for trump and biden going forward. could they face off again in the 2024 presidential election? it stinks down right now, we could well see a re match. so for biden's part, he actually said in that press conference yesterday, the as of now he is running. he has to consult his family. he has to consult party officials, advisors, and he said he would make an announcement early next year, but we see that president biden was very energized by these mid terms. he feels like they are an affirmation of his policies. on the other hand, he is turning 80 years old. he's still an unpopular president, so we could see that decision change. as for trump, that's a bit of a mess right now. terry. i mean, we've seen sources here in washington saying that he is fuming at these mid term results. he sees it as the republican party's fault for not doing better. but the reality is that if you look at the races, it was the most extreme, most a trump in candidates who didn't do well. so for republicans who might be eager to
4:19 pm
put donald trump in the past, this could be a chance, especially with a run to santa. so i mentioned his rival doing so well. and i'll add to that terry, that trump is not at all happy about all the attention that the florida governor is getting. he's even threatened to release what he's called on the flattering information about him. but all that said, president trump said he's going to make a big announcement next week that he might be running. let's see if that changes between now and next week. to me, we're still waiting to get her final results. of course, sir, we're both still being counted in, when might we finally know how all this turns out? yeah, there's still some house races that are being counted that are too close to call, but most importantly, we saw the report you just showed. we're still waiting for some crucial swing states to bring in result. so arizona and nevada. these are states that could divide. i decide rather power in the senate. we could possibly have as result from arizona by to morrow. nevada could still take weeks and we were talking about tens

of thousands of male and ballots. and just that a product of, of how the votes are counted there. and a one more note, terry, georgia is a heading to a run offer that's going to be decided on december 6. so a lot still hanging in the balance. so me, thanks so much is always our correspondence to me. so i was gonna, in washington, sketch up on some other stories making headlines around the world and indonesian plane crash that killed all. 62 people on board last year was caused by the pilots over reliance only auto pilot system and inadequate training that's according to indonesia, transportation safety bodies, final report. the taliban had ordered amusement park owners in afghanistan to refuse entry to women. this comes after the countries so called morality ministry said that there would be restrictions on women being able to access public parks and fun fairs says, taking over afghanistan last year. the tell about of said women should not leave

form recently, but so young, he's turning 18 on the 1st day of the tournament, has scored some fantastic goals this season. so really exciting to see him on the world stage. he could become joanie's youngest, ever world cup player. and then another uncapped player joining him is nicholas fuque, who, who's never played for germany despite being almost 30 and he school 10 goals this season. so a couple of surprising strike names matthew gets as well, returning to the germany school for the 1st time in 5 years. he scored the world cup, winning goal back in 2014 for germany in rio de janeiro, but hasn't really featured since and only returned to the bonus to go this year after a spell abroad. now he's back in the squad. bigger missions though maps hummel's won't be traveling kids. i took it out with germany as the same goes for micro voice who's once again, been struggling with injury has missed pretty much every tournament of his international career except for one so disappointing for him. i met his appointment of germany crashed out of the 2018 world camp. what can we expect from hans blix

team this year? the new coach, new luck. but i think he still hasn't really found his best team. the run of 6 as he had this year, we didn't always see a very strong germany side. lots of draws against good quality opposition. a loss to hungary. quite recently. i think on paper germany of one of the strongest squads in the tournament. but it's getting those plays to sing from the same him, she to get them all as a collective. and the flick said he picked this 26 man's cord, not as the 26 best players. but as the players who fit together most, i still think they're gonna have to rely heavily on the creativity of young players like german, monsieur and chi, habits. and so far it's going to be really hard to predict. i think germany, but they always surprises at tournaments. human rights issues in carter have been raised already quite a bit ahead of the tournament. i had the german team addressed them well, germany, their school has yet to really make a strong o to take strong action as a collective, as some squads like australia most recently have. let's hear what handy flick had
4:26 pm
to say on the matter today. is it normally stick? does via, it's very important on the one hand that we as the german football association, have the chance to focus on the sport. what. but at the same time, we also have to speak up about the human rights situation on the ground in katara students in kata for we have to keep our eyes and our ears open at the end of the day. that's also our task and something that we want to do. one. yeah, we don't want to shy away from it. i think on the flick trying to protect the squad there. little bit. he wants them to focus on football. i think he wants the press to lay off them a little bit. some of the germany plays have been quite outspoken. most recently longer. that's gotten manuel neu of by and munich after the guitar, ambassador ambassadors said to the german broadcast, is it the f homosexuality is damage in the mind? they both condemned those quotes and really said that this is not part of their
4:27 pm
ideology and that they want to make sure that germany do take a stance. but as i say, the squad as a collective hasn't really made a big stance. but the players certainly have made their feelings clear. max, thanks so much. mcnamara from dw sport you are watching d. w. news from berlin up next. it's focused on europe including a report on why sweden is not meeting it's climate protection targets. i'm terry martin for me and all of us here. thanks for watching and of course you can always get all the latest news information anytime you want on our website at t w dot com, with
