pressure from the street and successful opposition is on the rise beds off with menchie's doff november 25th one d w ah ah, this is dw news alive from berlin. ukraine watches with caution, as russia signals of withdrawal from the city of hassan. russia says its troops are retreating from the regional capital, but ukraine says moscow can't be trusted. also coming up on the show. tuesday was a good day for merck. good day for democracy. there was

a strong note for democrats. joe biden praises the results of us mid term election launch with his party. the democrats fared better than expected drug. ah. hello, i'm clear, richardson, thanks much for joining us. ukraine says it's force as have retaken $41.00 settlements in the harrison region which russia illegally annexed in september. he remains cautious after moscow announced the retreat of its troops from the strategic city of harrison, and has yet to confirm whether it is true ought a pull out, would mark one of russia's worst setbacks in the war. little sofa moving closer to the city of her son, look like that. you, cranium flat is flying again in dozens of small towns around the regional capital

over instantly her rifka about 50 kilometers north of her son. people gather to thank soldiers as they enter the city. but not everyone here shares their sense of euphoria. isn't it still very, very scary when you drive through the region, you see how many villages have been bombed, that her so much destruction of our school is destroyed, that is not a single window with ly. all the buildings are shattered. we all know there's wood . for the 1st time since moscow launched its invasion in february, guns have fallen silent in this village, close to the front line. this man who has been living on humanitarian aid for months, has only just heard of the liberation of neighboring cni horrific. we knew the only way below referrals signal. there's no food all or nothing. there. i was free people who were there right now. told me they have no food. oh nothing. what we'll

do. we have to bring them food. goes just a little wally. been seen those who have survived the shelling or wondering how they will make it through the winter. with oh, we've had no water supply since the end of february. they are bringing us drinking water to a school. we can bring water from a nearby well with our tractor, but it's not really drinkable here. the 2 sides keep volleying rockets at each other. so no hurting. yesterday i was removing leaves and right behind this building. it was terrible. the battle went on with machine guns. for weeks, ukrainian forces have been advancing on her son. it's loss would leave russia with few territorial gains since the beginning of the war. earlier, our correspondent matters billing. i gave us an update on why ukraine remains wary of russia's announcement. it's a bit unusual to announce
5:04 am
a withdraw days in advance, and russia has even before hinted at that. so that something that makes the military year suspicious, the plot could very well be to draw the ukrainians into the city of harris on weight there with quite a few units heavily armed and engage the ukrainians and costly street fights or to have major buildings mind to a blow up or parts of the city as the ukrainians enter their many variance. but to this announcement seems a little bit suspicious to people here to the military. and that's why the ukrainians are saying they're moving on very cautiously. they're very well aware that this might be something different from what it looks like. that's going to be us now where presidential biden has welcomed the results of the mid term elections after his party fared better than expected. u. s. media had predicted huge against
5:05 am
for republicans, but those gains fail to materialize. biden's democrats and do look sad to lose control of the house of representatives. but the senate remains on a knife edge. former president donald trump also claimed a victory for republicans despite the weaker than expected results. here's president biden speaking a short while ago to party activists. thank you. no, i really mean it. thank you for fighting like the devil to make sure that we have a free and fair election and you know all those elections and are so far at best to my knowledge. none of them has not said that when they lost that should we lost. that's a big deal nor i really mean it. you know, tuesday was a good day for america. a good day for democracy. i was a strong knight for democrats. for more on that story asked he w, washington correspondent soon nissan was gonna what those election results will
5:06 am
mean for the rest of the crafts. that's right. in the democrats and president biden, you could say probably benefit of the most from these elections, even if they do end up losing the house of representatives. i mean, in that speech we heard president biden driving home that message once again, and that he says, democrats beat the odds in large part because he believes americans overwhelmingly support his agenda and his message. and so he pointed to the fact that independence, so these are voters who are not registered as democrats or republicans, that they are the majority of independence voted for a for democrats, that women and young people showed up in force for the democrats. i mean, you have to say it wasn't all bad for the republicans. they did have some bright spots. they were able to win that big senate race in ohio. they also, once a big congressional seats in new york and some governors races, you know, republicans themselves are voicing disappointment because they had expected to do much better. so on a whole, i think that's why we're seeing so much optimism from democrats and from president
5:07 am
biden in the aftermath of these mid term elections. so looking ahead at what do these mid terms mean for the next presidential election in 2024? well, for the republican republicans rather mean some trouble for donald trump, so we're seeing right wing media like fox news, for example, raising questions about the former president's influence on the party. it was some of the candidates that president trump, the former president himself, hand picked that didn't fair so well for the republicans. he's not very happy about this criticism. as you can imagine, he's blaming the republican party, republican officials, for making bad choices. and at the same time, his rival rhonda santa's who's the governor of florida, he's getting praised to the skies for winning his re election so strongly. so handily. so even though we are expecting trump to announce that he's running for 2024, there is a lot of pressure on him right now to rethink and ask for the democrats president vine was asked about this. he said he is intending to run. he has to consult his

family, his party advisors, and he's going to come to a decision early next year. there are some headwinds for president biden, he's turning 80 this month. he's still not a particularly popular president. so those might be some factors that affect his decision, but as of now he says he's expecting to be going forward. so we could possibly see a rematch of the 2020 election and we still don't have the final results from these midterms. can you tell us where votes are still being counted? yes, some house races are still being counted too close to call and crucially to senate races. in swing states, a nevada is still going through tens of thousands of ballots, and the same is true and arizona. both of these states are crucial in deciding who has control of the senate. and then know we all get to watch ga, become again the epicenter of the election frenzy in a month when the 2 senate candidate their face off in a run off. so at the very latest by early december, clear, we should have a much clearer picture. okay, has t w's assume he's almost gone to thank you as always for your reporting. and we can
