not be another cold bowl. the u. s. president spoke after meeting his chinese counterpart agent being in bali head of the g 20 summit for their 1st face to face talks by then said tension between the 2 need not escalate into conflict. and the e u turns up the heat on iran, the block ready is a new package of sanctions. in response to, to ron's practice on anti government protests, in which more than 300 people have been killed and its supply of drones to russia. ah, i'm glad else as welcome to the program, ukraine's president vladimir zalinski as called the liberation of a song the beginning of the end of the war, or during

a surprise visit to the city. car song was recaptured by ukrainian forces on friday of the russian troops withdrew to the other side of the me forever. the city was the only provincial capital to fall to russia. it had been under occupation for 8 months. russia annexed caps on and the surrounding area after sham referendum in september speaking. and cassandra lensky said, ukraine would continue to take back territories occupied by russia's military. i got me look under jim binding's and was, is, is it beat about his longly difficult? we, because this is war, do the best heroes walk and so, but it, for us is very understandable. we don't believe russia. yes.

they're there drinking with all the world is why we have the we were we're ready for our lease for our conference. let's bring in our he crank correspondence, nick connelly, nick, you spent the day in the city of kerosene and just got back from there. how safe is it was definitely a city that you can really see and feel is a place that is still definitely on the front lines. there's a lot of bangs you hear all the time in the backdrop. some of that is d mining, but lots of that is also russian artillery fire the russian army is after all just on the other side of the river. and basically any part of kennesaw is definitely very much within the range of their artillery. but the exciting thing is quite how used to it people are there, here when you hear bang, you see all the journalists and other people who just come in for the day. forgive kind of looking around, trying to understand what's going on, where it's coming from. you look around, the locals, narrow glue to their phones,
6:04 pm
trying to get a signal, trying to communicate with the outside world, trying to catch up on news. i'm kind of huddling around the generators with the mobile phone at mass, hoping they can get a message out. so definitely people who lived under russell creative 8 months. this is very much over the course, and very few people seem afraid that and when you asked them most people will tell you they're convinced that the russians will be driven further away from her. so and further on the other bank of the river and that soon enough those kind of shooting will be a thing in the past. so can make story of who's isn't and kind of confidence there . now soleski said this morning that he was called ready for peace. i'll be really closer to peace. now what i think is peace on ukraine's terms. he says is victory is going to validation of his ministry strategy and your piece. his terms means at minimum, pushing russia back to where it was on the 24th february when this war began. probably also retaken crimea, russia annexed in 2014. so this is new piece by ukrainian military victory rather
6:05 pm
than some kind of deal that it saves them futons face that allows russia to hold on to bits of ukraine territory. there's any very little appetite for that. and you saw people who have some kind of taking selfish with military people asking for autographs. you're wishing them luck with their fight against the russians in other parts on the ukraine. so they were very difficult now for eval implants key to offer up some kind of with russia that might make people in western europe and america, happy by ending the conflict in ari. but definitely that wouldn't go down well here in ukraine. now apparently evidence of war crimes is yet again emerging this time and kind of san given what we've seen in other places like both shall assume me. where does that leave hopes for a lasting peace wove? see these things are going to poison these kind of abuses that we saw. butcher, we saw that elsewhere. are going to poison relationship in ukraine and russia in the long run as concerns catalyst bit early. now, normally it's in the experience the passage shown in other cities that it takes

a week or so for the authorities to get some good handle on where these barrels are to find out and collect information about missing people. but even just in a few hours, we spent there speaking to people on the main square in front of the government building. there were the ukrainian flag gone back up. we heard countless stories, people who had gone missing some trying to get out of concern in the early months of war and never been heard from since others with pro ukrainian views. people who the russians had heard of who they knew about and who were basic disappeared, fear dead. so definitely lots of the expectation in a car, so that make me lots of an happy and sad and tragic stories to come as the kind of investigation continues. now in the days weeks to come to w respondent, nick connelly then keith for us. thank you and joe biden. as told china, there must be no cold war. the u. s. president met his chinese count upon cj and pang, and indonesia had of tuesday's group of 20 summit. them all eyes were on the 1st in

person, talks between the 2 leaders since biden took office. 2 nations are competing for global influence. economic and security. tensions are increasing, but by the differences, all the issues like taiwan and ukraine must not be allowed to escalate into real conflict. we had actually we, we had an open, candid conversation about our trenches and our priorities. it was clear, he was clear and i was clear, there will defend american interest and values promot, universal human rights, and stand up for their national order and work and lock step with our allies and partners. we're going to compete vigorously when i'm not looking for conflict. i'm looking to manage is competition responsible for presidency and turn worn by not to cross bridging, so called red line over the self ruled island of taiwan. asked d. w as chief international editor, richard walker. what this red line is it's,
6:08 pm
it's a complex issue. it goes back to the very early days of the relationship between the united states and china and how they dealt with the issue of taiwan in the early days of talked to get a diplomatic relations between the 2 sides. going back in the 19 seventy's and some of the sort of diplomatic fudges that they came up with back then a beginning to get pretty much unstuck. there are times like one china, this idea that there is a single china and that taiwan belongs to that from a chinese point of view, that means a towards the united states and anyone else. just keep away, this is our business, this is got nothing to do with you. that is not the, the u. s. understanding of the id of one china. this is kind of back away from the theory here. 2 more concrete, red lines with the type of the chinese say that taiwanese independence is a red line that they would not accept. and it's pretty well understood that if the
6:09 pm
taiwanese did declare independence, that the chinese a very well might go ahead with an invasion. but there's absolutely no intention on the taiwanese side to declare independence. so this is almost a straw man. so i think the abiding sense i get from looking at the chinese statements coming out of this is that they're not budging one inch on the issue of taiwan. that message remains back off. this has got nothing to do with you. and that does not sit comfortably with united states, which looks at taiwan as a vulnerable democracy that it wants to protect almost in the vein of what we're seeing in ukraine versus russia right now. that was d w as chief of the national editor ridge of walker reporting from bali. and now let's look at some of the other news. we're making headlines around the world today . truck drivers in spain of begun an indefinite strike. all the better working conditions. hundreds of trackers march through the center of madrid, demanding subsidies to contract. the soaring cost of living. their last

compensation with the government lasted more than 20 days and caused major disruptions for supply chains. the jail, british egyptian activist, al abdel for tom has told his family in the letter that he has started drinking water again. his sister welcomed the letter as proof of life after fis for his health. the pro democracy activists hasn't been on hunger strike and refused water since the cop 27 climate summit of 2 people have been killed and dozens wounded in missile strikes on the headquarters of iranian kurdish parties and northern iraq. iranian media media say they were carried out by iran, revolutionary god, who accused kurdish militants of stoking widespread protests in iran the opinion is imposing new sanctions on the rounds rulers and certain companies. this is in response to iran's cracked on anti government protests and the supply of

drones to russia. e u foreign ministers met in brussels today to discuss the new measures which also target the chief of iran's revolutionary god. ministrations in ramos, but by the death of dina, mass armine in police custody. 300 people have been killed since the nationwide protest began almost 2 months ago. let's get a more on base with d w's, terry shoals, who joins us from brussels now. terry, what new measures have been passed against the rainy and officials? hi gearhart. yes, more than 30 iranian officials and organizations have now been put on the sanctions list. and that means that there will be asset freezes and visa bands on the individuals. and these are over 2 separate issue. one is as you mentioned, the repression of demonstrations in the streets over the death of masa armenian in police custody. and the other is over iran, supply of drones to russia,
6:12 pm
to use in its war against ukraine. and when we're talking about the human rights charges, even the iranian interior minister was put on that list today along with 4 members of the team that actually arrested masa many. and on the drones matter, the chief of iran revolutionary guard corps was put on the sanctions list today, along with a drone maker. so this is the 2nd round of sanctions, the u. s. as placed on iran over the supply of drones. so they're making it clear to, to run, they are very, very serious about not helping russia and in, in its war against ukraine. now these sanctions come, as the european union is still trying to revive the nuclear agreement with the wrong. will that affect these talks? well that depends a lot on how to ron reacts, and there's a lot of concern about that here in brussels. you officials have set on background that they look at the problems that the e u is having with iran relieve much of the world is having with iran right now
6:13 pm
with both the human rights repression and the supply of drones as we've been discussing. and they say it would not make sense to allow yet one more crisis to erupt even further. and that would be allowing iran to continue progress toward possibly creating a nuclear weapon. unrestricted. and so the e u says time and again, it believes the j c p o way can and should be resurrected. but today in his press conference for foreign policy rel said that that is still made and it remains to be seen whether there hopes to keep the nuclear restrictions on iran will actually be able to be implemented. and it's also concerned that iran is providing russia with not just drones, but also missiles. what does that you intend to do about that? yes, that's a very, very serious concern of the european union. there's a lot of discussion about that. at the moment you officials say that they believe that these suspected deliveries have not yet gone ahead. so they're hoping that they're still a chance to convince tay ron that this would not be in its best interest to do. so
6:14 pm
. we're told that burrell has made several phone calls over the last couple of weeks to the iranian government, urging them to think again about this. and again that you says that if these go ahead, if it's proven that iran is providing ballistic missiles to russia, there will be very serious sanctions implemented on iran very quickly. they say that this would be a very, very serious development in the war to the social stand brussels for us. thank you very much, terry. on a deb hughes at the games in 2024. the sport held its wealth championships over the weekend in new york where it all began some 50 years ago. the 15 year of india santo, one the well title. even from main dr. old didn't think marshall teen that makes her the instant favorite for a gold novel in sancho is the 1st that's competitive when the chip and the youngest

and he has a reminder of our top story. ukraine's president vladimir zalinski has visited the liberated city of san to congratulate the troops who have ended 8 months of russian occupation. brendan reacted to news by claiming the city is still part of russia and that's it from me and the new scene. for now, i'll have an update at the top of the hour. don't go away next up d, w, these asia with my colleague purists vanity and get out office and again, all the harvesters are immigrants going to say everything you enjoy eating at home with your family was harvested by people who are being exploited. and then i guess for free and we're going to need to keep doing what we're doing and that's why your green river.
