denied his plea, paving the way for the treasury department to hand over the documents to the democratic lead. the w reporter katy stevens has been following the story and joins me now here in the studio. okay, great to see. so this is a, let's say complicated, long running legal battle. break it down force, right? well, to understand this, we really need to go all way back to 2016 during the presidential campaign back then donald trump became the 1st presidential candidate in 40 years to refuse to release his tax returns, which is kind of been standard practice for modern presidents and presidential candidates, now there was a lot of pressure on him to do so. he had boasted of his aggressive tax avoidance strategy in his business dealings. but he never did it and he refused to do it fast . forward to 2019 and the congressional committee that looked into tax matters said
2:06 am
it needed to have a look at donald trump's tax returns for 2013 to 2018 because it wanted to reveal review how tax law applies to president's particular president. donald trump with very complex business dealings. now the treasury at that time refused, and donald trump's lawyer said, no, there's no legal legislative purpose for any of this is all politically motivated. so that basically sets up this sort of legal fight that then went on for the next 3 years, ping ponging through various courts. and today we've had the supreme court now refusing to block the release of these tax returns to congress. so it finally now looks like it's probably the end of the road for the former u. s. president, in this case. right. so tell us then katie, what are the ramifications of this decision when things are likely to move pretty quickly? and so it seems that these tax returns, and those of some business is connected to donald trump, will be almost immediately turned over to this committee. however, the committee doesn't have a lot of time and whether the democrats and the committee don't have much time left

of congressional business this year, just weeks next year. the republicans take over control of the house of representatives and also the chair of this committee. so it's not really clear what the democrats will be able to do with this time, but you can bet they're going to be coming through all of these tax returns looking for any evidence of potential improper accounting. and of course, that information could then potentially be linked to the public. that's i'll give you why the democrats have been so hell bent on, getting their hands on these tax returns before the end of the year. and also why donald trump and his team say that this is pretty motivated, or it will tell us, what does this actually all mean or what could it mean? and for donald trump, well of course this all comes to the days after tonight's he wants to run for president again in 2024. this is a major blow. he's been fighting for years to keep these tax. it has as of the public eye. but it's not, there's only legal issue that he's facing. he's got many investigations on multiple fronts, from his role in inciting the capital riot,

to holding classified documents, allegedly fortunate business practices. and interestingly, this is the 3rd time that he's face to feet by the supreme court regarding legal battles as a documents just this year alone. so all of this is not looking very good. and of course, if any evidence does come out of wrong doing in his business dealings, something that he's boasted about being so successful out for years that could really put both his off could really affect his campaign. he's already had a shaky thought with the mid terms, the candidates that he back not performing as well as expected. but that doesn't mean we can, right, donald trump pulse just yet. he's likely to frame all these allegations once again as a political which of course, and that could play well with his base. and we won't, will be hearing plenty from donald trump. i'm pretty sure that the job, the reporter katie stephen. thanks. germany's government says it has agreed to withdraw all its troops from molly. by 2024th. the west african nation has been fighting h. a hottest insurgency for
