denied his plea. paving the way for the treasury department to hand over the documents to the democratic lead panel. the w reporter, katy stevens has been following the story and joins me now. here in this i katie, great to see you. so this is a, let's say, complicated, long running legal battle. break it down force, right? well, to understand this, we really need to go all way back to 2016 during the presidential campaign back then donald trump became the 1st presidential candidate in 40 years to refuse to release his tax returns, which is kind of been standard practice for modern presidents and presidential candidates, now there was a lot of pressure on him to do so. he had boasted of his aggressive tax avoidance strategy and his business dealings. but he never did it. he refused to do it fast. forward to 2019 and the congressional committee that looked into tax matters said it needed to have
4:03 am
a look at donald trump's tax returns for 2013 to 2018 because it wanted to reveal review how tax law applies to president's particular president. donald trump with very complex business dealings. now the treasury at that time refuse and donald trump's lawyer said no, there's no legal legislative purpose for any of this is all politically motivated. so that basically sets up this sort of legal fight that then went on for the next 3 years, ping ponging through various courts. and today we've had the supreme court now refusing to block the release of these tax returns to congress. so it finally now looks like it's probably the end of the road for the former u. s. president, in this case. right. so tell us the katie, what are the ramifications of this decision? well, things are likely to move pretty quickly and out. so it seems that these tax returns and those of some business is connected to donald trump, will be almost immediately turned over to this committee. however, the committee doesn't have a lot of time or either the democrats in the committee don't have much time left of congressional business this year,
4:04 am
just weeks next year. the republicans take over control of the house of representatives and also the chair ship of this committee. so it's not really clear what the democrats will be able to do with this time, but you can bet they're going to be combing through all of these tax returns looking for any evidence of potential or improper accounting. and of course, that information could then potentially be linked to the public. that's arguably why the democrats have been so hell bent on, getting their hands on these tax returns before the end of the year. and also why donald trump, his team, say that this is politically motivated. what will tell us, what does this actually or mean, or what could it mean for donald trump? well, of course, there's all kinds of days after him that he wants to run for president. again, in 2024. this is a major blow he's been fighting for years to keep these tax returns out of the public eye. but it's not, there's only a legal issue that he's facing. he's got many investigations on multiple fronts. from his roland, inciting their capital riot, to holding classified documents and actually fortunate business practices. and
4:05 am
interestingly, this is the 3rd time that he's faced defeat by the supreme court regarding legal battles or the documents just this year alone. so all of this is not looking very good, and of course, if any evidence does come out of wrong doing in his business dealings, something that he's boasted about being so successful at for years. that could really put both his off could really affect his campaign. he's already had a shaky start with the mid terms, the candidates that he back not performing as well as expected. but that doesn't mean we can, right, donald trump off just yet. he's likely to frame all these allegations once again as a political which of course, and that could play well with his base. and we will be hearing plenty from donald trump. i'm pretty sure that dw reporter cody stevens. thanks, i'm going brazilian president shareable sonata has filed a complaint with electoral authorities challenging the validity of last month's election results. also, nato is unlikely to get far as the results of already been ratified by the top

electoral court. but the move could fuel a small but committed protest movement that's refusing to accept the outcome. the far right candidate narrowly lost to leftist rival. we see nass your little at the silver in a run off vote. on october 30th we'll d w, south america correspondent yields and remedies has been covering this story for us . and i asked him why boats fernando is filing the complaint now. bows on iris party claims that when trying to conduct an audit after results, they realised that a large number of their machines used to during the election dance. hallo unaudited . that to remember that a vote. any brazil is electronics, so there are no ballots. and according to bozeman iris complain, did machines used to a manufacturer before 2020, don't allow a naughty teen. and that's why they are asking the electro authority,

the invalidation of those votes. if these were to succeed, i mean if only votes ah, were valid, those votes were counted by them. i, she's manufactured after 2020 variables snyder will win the election. and that's what he's trying to, to get now joanna, over the silver one that run off or only by less than 2 percent and the results of an already been ratified by the top electoral court. but is there actually any chance that this challenge by bolts or not will reverse the elections outcome it doesn't look alike. in a low less, a victory was recognized by every political party in brazil. it was also verified by international observation missions presented in the country during the day. the election on his victory was also ratified confirmed by the electra alpharetta, and then recognized for by thousands of thousands of governments around the globe,
