the black friday deals are here, but what about the usual hordes of desperate shoppers trying to break down the doors? willoughby a much more sober event this year. and after pleading with companies and consumers to conserve power amid europe's energy crunch, germany turns to artificial intelligence. to help out this winter, i been for solon, let's do business. protests santini, torres, fox, con i, phone factory and hen on province are escalated for weeks. workers have been leaving the plant only to be met with violence by police in has bad suits. at the center of the demonstrations, china's 0 cove. it measures and the pull working and living conditions under the factory wide locked down. the world's largest i from factory inject joe china, hundreds of angry employers, march out of fox coast flagship i phone plan. workers smashed surveillance cameras pushed forward barriers and marched out against a wall of police. many in hausman sweets,

several of the protesting workers live stream to protest on social media networks. the footage showed a brutal police response to the internet. the latest round of protests at the industrial complex, which produces the majority of the words i forms began over a pay dispute among the newly recruited workers who had been promised generous bonuses. but workers said the contracts were changed so they could not get to bonuses. adding that they were quarantined without food. on thursday, fox can release the statement saying the bonus payments had been delayed due to a technical error. last month tries and co 19 cases, so to factory lockdown. workers were sealed into their dormitories without medical care and without food. some of the $200000.00 workers scaled frances and gates to break out and go home. analyst christina carlo joins as from the non profit, some of us, which focuses on corporate responsibility and accountability. what do you think

about the treatment of these workers at fox call? thank you. first have been for taking up this issue though workers, it fox can have always been in a very challenging situation with very difficult working conditions. but recently it's become much more so with fox kind of instituting what's called a closed loop plan or workers had to live in factories on site, are not allowed to leave the site and had to depend upon the company to provide them with food, medical care, etc. and recently the food has been running short so that they've been getting things like bread and no or rice and beans sprouts. and so they're very distressed at the same time because of pressure from apple. in particular, to increase production, there's been a move to bring in a 100000 new workers who were given a lot of promises for big bonuses,
12:20 am
which they were then told they wouldn't receive unless they worked through march in these conditions. and that led to them trying to escape. is there anything apple can do about this? that's a very difficult question. apple is the customer effects con. vice can produce to 70 percent of all i phones globally. an apple depends upon china as the source of assembly and manufacturing for 90 percent of all their products, 98 percent of their i phones i'm so they really have put themselves in a very dependent position with china and the increasingly authoritarian chinese government. apple does have policies that states that workers right should be protect it, but they clearly are unable to enforce them or unwilling to. and that's often common when brands put pressure on a supply chain to speed up production,
12:21 am
et cetera. in those situations, suppliers tend to scrap the rules and regs and, and cracked other workers even more. they may do already. you think it'd be in apples interest to be proactive here. these guys work for apple at the end of the day and apple surprises sliding and there are heaps of deliveries. the one arrive in time for christmas. exactly. apples now saying that they're going to be at least 30 percent behind in deliveries of i phones and a very precarious situation for them. but the situation that's not a surprise to them. they have been increasingly dependent upon factories in china where conditions are very problematic. and where the entire situation is, it's very much us are dependent upon the, the good will she and the government. so china, at apple's in mind in that situation,
12:22 am
they've been discussing moving some of their manufacturing outside of china. but that's very precarious. we've. in fact, i filed a shareholder resolution as shareholders and apple. i'm asking them to produce a transition plan. not specifically about fox can in fact, focused on the plate of the forced labor by leaders who are the victims of genocide in china. to transition operations that are threatening workers, right out of china. very interesting stuff from christina colonel there from the group some of us which focuses on corporate responsibility and accountability of it'll also be interesting to see how consumers react to this story. thank you for being on the show. thank you so much, ben. red hot inflation exponentially rising energy prices and a growing cost of living crisis, costing a shadow over this years. black friday,

shopping spree. well, consumers around the world, $100.00, once a year, bargains, big retailers have their own problems. workers at amazon sites in the u. s. germany and france for urge to strike on black friday and demand better pay. targeting the online retailer on one of the busiest shopping days of the year retailers worried about shrinking profit margins due to sorry, business costs. let's bring in our wall street. correspond against quarter. will this be a very different black friday? well, i mean, so far it looks like us, consumers are still pretty resilient when they come, for example, to inflation. and also they're still going. pandemic and estimates are that there will be about 166000000 american starting their am holiday shopping this weekend. that it's about $8000000.00 more than last year around, but on average they might spend less and with inflation,
12:24 am
even if they spent the same amount of money. that means they're buying a few are good, but clearly with inflation, there might be an even bigger need to for catching a discount. so for the holiday season, and so many people are counting their pennies right now. but there are other problems that could arise. what, what about striking amazon workers? yeah, well, i mean, black friday become the make m, as in pay day, that at least what the unions globally are calling for. there are strikes and roughly 30 countries around the globe. and there are demands, for example, in france for higher bonuses for the holiday season. here in the united states, they are demand for a better work, place, safety and also in germany for instance. and here in the united states as well, the right to organize. so the are some protest under bay, but what we're hearing from amazon so far is that operations in general are running
12:25 am
smoothly. and also here at the stock exchange, if you look at the stock price of amazon and there isn't that big of a reaction, but them overall. i mean, that's the trend that we've seen in the past couple of months that unionizing and workers power are definitely increasing in the overall skill tight labor market in quarter at the new york stock exchange. thank you. an acute energy crisis in germany to to roches warn you, crime has driven efforts to conserve power into high gear. scientists and engineers now looking at artificial intelligence to insure more efficiency, especially in industry, have a look. berlin's most important science complex is looking to save energy. to solve this equation, they're creating a digital twin of all the buildings and their data. o ross via what's fi on the

his rooster is 2 years ago. we had no idea how much energy was consumed by which building. we didn't have any details besides the meter reading at the end of the year. but today we can see anomalies and consumption when there are spikes peaks. these are details that i can't see and my end of your billing. my yard was on it. and obviously i gotten the zia one lesson they learned. individual heaters should now only be used as needed, or continued on mit of each employee was asked to set parameters for their own workplace or room. when should it be heated? when am i on vacation? do i come in at 6, but leave at 2 pm? so that can be defined individually and so we don't need the whole building to 20 degrees from 8 am to 6 pm in wallets. once is flawed, data centers are particular power. guzzlers. not only do they need a lot of energy to operate, but they are also constantly cooled to do this,

water is pumped up from the basement. it cools the servers, but also the overall building environment. when it gets to warm, it goes to the roof where it's cool down, then it goes back to the basement and the process starts all over again. thanks to new software, this process now uses 50 percent less electricity. the pump light from wood i fulfill the pump is controlled more individually before there was some intelligence that went into the temperature setting. but now the factors that play into it are much bigger company, is it, wendy, will in rain, you can call these factors are now playing a much, much greater role than with any system we used before is team us. and for mines of there's a lot of energy wasted in industry. 2 researchers at darmstadt, technical university are testing new energy and heat efficient methods. conventional machines are being converted. it's in here and as i fair how we draw waste heat here from the machines exhaust air,
12:28 am
we can then use the waste heat to heat the cleaning tanks from the machine and keep them warm. this reduces the demand from the tanks as well. i soon off of a 2000 on demand environment that oftentimes of philadelphia. this could save about 40 percent of the energy used in cleaning and drying. the combined efforts are costly, but due to high energy prices, they're expected to pay for themselves within a year. i'm been for solon nice doing business with what's making the headlines and what's behind them. dw news africa, the shows that samples the issues shaping the continents. life is slowly getting back to normally well in the streets to give you in the report. on the insights
