a former member of the military. also coming up, china prepares to live with cobit and a major policy shift. beijing announcing and easing of corona virus restrictions nationwide with less mandatory pcr testing and home quarantine. for those with milder symptoms and the u. s. denies helping ukraine to strike inside of russia after drone strikes on 3 airfields, 2 of them, deep within territory. and a major upset at the world cup rocco keep their cool in a penalty shoot out knocking out football powerhouse space. ah, i'm sarah kelly. welcome to the program. at least 25 members of
12:02 pm
a far right terror group have been detained in a series of raids across germany on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government. among the suspects are several former members of the armed forces and at least one active soldier. they are believed to be linked to a nationwide far right network that plan to storm the parliament building and seize power. some 3000 police officers were involved in overnight searches for more than of more than 130 properties across the country. and i spoke earlier with dw corresponded julia so deli about these events. and i asked her what she knew about the raids and the suspects that had been detained. yeah, this is considered one of the biggest raves anti terror raids in germany since the end of the 2nd world war. it was quite a massive operation that took place in 11 of germany states, but also 2 people were arrested abroad. one in italy, when in austria, and we've seen that a 25 people have been arrested,
12:03 pm
but that there are on that issue. additional 27 suspects who are suspected of being part of this network that, as you said, was aiming to overthrow the democratic order in germany. and part of this network were a series of people, one of whom is an entrepreneur from the city of frankfort, who is also a prince, even though that is a now is only a symbolic, a title in germany who was, is considered the ringleader of this network. and it's coordinator, but also under the investigation is a former member of the german parliament from the far right. a f d party who is currently an active judge in the city of berlin. but we've also seen some members of the german army and one member of the german special forces also involved in these raids, the suspects had reportedly planned to overthrow the german government. how real are the threats or were the threats?
12:04 pm
well, the network seems to have formed at the latest last year in november and investigations into the network started in spring of this year after a tip, a came from the intelligence services of the german state of hessen, and this group had started to organize and to plan a storming with a weapons of the german boone the stag and wanted to then enact a basically a qu. they wanted to change the democratic order and the government of germany. and they had already started building up something like a shadow cabinet, of people ready to then take power after this could have happened. they were also organizing shooting trainings. and they were recruiting people, especially within of the armed forces. and the police forces people who have weapons and use weapons, julia,
12:05 pm
so deli in berlin. thank you. and we also have closer analysis of this with the that he is aaron telson who is with me here in the studio. tell us a little bit more about the rights for women. who are they? exactly? well, the rights burger movement is a disparate association of various different groups with at times completely contradictory ideologies are just basically unified by one idea. they reject the authority of berlin of the german government as it currently exists in the current democratic order as it exists here in germany. basically they kind of hearken back to a more authoritarian style of government in argue that the current government is illegitimate and should be replaced with something more in line with governance that we used to see like in the i'm our republic and the ideas and the beliefs behind this are often really quite contradictory. now in the past, i've had the opportunity to interview members of various different groups and we have to stress here. these are completely contradictory groups often times ones that don't actually rather like working with each other that are just kind of going
12:06 pm
through various different bizarre conspiracy theories. now, some of them argue that the current german government is actually corporation and therefore should have no authority over them. other ones argue that the allied powers are still somehow occupying germany and still others also argue that the constitution of the weimar republic is somehow still in power. and that's why they have the authority to basically disband the current german government, the very contradictory ideas. and they've only gotten more bizarre in recent years, as the movement has borrowed more and more intellectual d n a from the q and on movement. and also the sovereign citizens movement in the united states. today's rates were pretty dramatic air and tell us a little bit more about how dangerous this group is now, what they are, they gaining steam and the country. well, it does appear that they are the german government currently estimates that some $20000.00 people could be considered on the rights burger spectrum. and while initially, as one police officer put that in the eighty's when it was found, it was just a group of individual crazies. we've seen more and more organization cropping up,
12:07 pm
especially in the wake of the 2 says team migration crisis. and then also the pandemic measures as well. that's driven more people into these groups and we're seeing more organization crop up as time goes on. the german government also says that they're seeking connections, not only to the military and also to the police, but they're looking for people with weapons training with combat experience. and at the exact same time, they're founding more connections into the extreme militant right in germany. so the german government also says around a 1000 writes, burger members are also have connections to new nazi groups in far right. milton groups as well. now we have also seen more attacks actually being carried out by hikes. we're going to recent years, there been attacks and police officers that resulted in at least one death. and then i a in attempted conspiracy to buck, the former a health minister called out about so the german government has been seen for years . they need to take the threat more and more seriously, and i think this rage shows how seriously they are starting to take it. and i think as anti terror rate and decades, police arresting dozens of suspected members of this group are intelligent,
12:08 pm
breaking it down for us. thank you so much with you. china has announced its most significant eating of corona virus restrictions since the pen them it began 3 years ago. it says that it would allow home quarantining in milder cases. and that mandatory p c r testing would be reduced. the major policy shift comes in the wake of nationwide protests at strict cove rules and significant disruption to china's trade and economy waiting and young queues to get dis, did this been foot routine for millions of chinese people? it's now finally changing in a major shift and it stick with policy. china has announced new to lex truth. who are you, would you go with the exception of nursing homes, hospitals, childcare centers, and schools with a group of negative deaths results, health goods and travel goods. but no longer be to quite people with mild symptoms
12:09 pm
are no longer required to guarantee at government facilities for travel within china, there is no need to show a negative test result and whole neighborhoods being locked down due to just one corporate infection. that do is a thing of the bust. it's a relief or residence fed up about living under harsh roots browser. my main complaint is that it was so boring when i was logged down at home earlier with george harlow. oh, our life hasn't become less complicated. now, because now we don't need negative cold with 19 desks to enter office buildings, this the best time to go on to flood zone full of the frustration became visible. when corbet restrictions were blamed for a deadly fire in an apartment that led to reared protest across china, be both demanded an end to cathedral colbert policy, and more political freedom. the unrest has largely been great by the state,
12:10 pm
but it's not only public discontent, but growing economic pressure that has pushed china to east the harshest corbett restrictions anywhere in the world. so how big of a change is this? we as journalists, fab encroachment in beijing. this is a game changer. i think this is purely a pandemic or a paradigm shift. look where we came from just until last week of we all were afraid that you know, when we tested positive or, or we're only earth suspected corporate case that we would get transferred to her a current teen facility. and it would have to spend a weeks there or, or that our neighborhood would get locked down. nothing more of that now. and every one who's infected in his mouth symptoms can just stay at home. also, the city wide mass testing is basically suspended. i mean until last week or every 3 days we had to get tested to only visit
12:11 pm
a supermarket and now basically only an hour, elderly homes or a hospital or schools can ask for a p. c. artists of the rest. this basically opened it is really a huge shift and also a big relief for many of us who live in china and basically had a lot of unpredictability in our life. now basically we're getting closer to living with the virus. does this now mean the and or at least the beginning of the and of the 0 covered policy? i mean it doesn't sound like 0 coven anymore. yes, i think you're right. and even though of costa, a government is a little bit cautious in the i don't know explanations and they have not officially announced the end of the record. but for me, it's quite yet because the recovered em consists of re tracking every case in m a containing the virus completely. and this will not be possible any more. i give you several examples now because we don't have to test every 3 days. there are a lot of covert cases that are not a report the system i know personally many and every chinese that i know have
12:12 pm
a lot of colleagues or acquaintances who are positive right now, but have not report the infection to the neighborhood committee or to the health commission, so right now the numbers are not reliable anymore and it's simply not possible anymore to contain to fiber. so basically it's a reality that are, we are away from a 0 corporate in it's of course, a month long process, but i think it's reversible. how much is this being seen as a public health policy decision, or is it more political because, after these widespread protestations realized that the population would no longer accept 0 colored restrictions? well, i mean, officially the m, the propaganda era apparatus saying ok now we discovered that other micron variant is not as dangerous anymore. that's why we're changing our policy. but i think the timing suggests very clearly that it's a reaction of the public anger that are, you know, has culminated over those protests. and,
12:13 pm
and i also actually the economic pressure that is also not a to under estimate because the trait numbers from today, they're really em disastrous. and i think there was a lot of pressure to change the policy. otherwise it wouldn't have changed at now because we are in the beginning of the winter and also the chinese new year. the season is coming soon. that's where millions were hundreds of millions of chinese will travel to their home, towns to areas where the medical system is really very rudimentary. so it is really not an optimal timing to open up fat in customer and beijing. thank you. and here are some other stories making news around the world. us senator rafael warnock has defeated his republican challenger, herschel walker, and george was run off contest for a seat in the senate. his win gives the democrats and out might. jim outright majority in the senate. warnock thanked georgians, god and his family in an emotional victory speech. he will serve 6 years as a senator until 2028. donald trump's family business has been found

12:15 pm
the stripes to keep for fear of escalating the conflict. we have neither encouraged nor enabled the ukrainians to strike inside of russia. but the important thing is to understand what ukrainians are living through every day with the ongoing russian aggression against their country. and our determination to make sure that they have in their hands, along with many other partners around the world, the equipment that they need to defend themselves to defend their territory, to defend the freedom. and russia's invasion of ukraine has caused devastating loss of life. but both sides have been secretive about just how many of their soldiers have died. civilian casualties are also impossible to state with any certainty or next report looked at the reasons why. 9 months of fighting air strikes, artillery battles and close combat in towns across a 900 kilometer long frontline, leaving thousands dead. but how many 1000 is unknown?
12:16 pm
russia stated in september that it had lost just under 6000 troops. but the u. s. military says it's lost about a $100000.00 on the field. ukraine recently said that about 13000 of its soldiers had died in the war, but the us said it's number of casualties is also more like 100000. the us uses a variety of methods to figure out that number, including satellite footage, as well as social media, images of the battlefield. when you stated that 100000 ukranian soldiers had died, kiev reacted with anger, saying, such figures were classified and that the government would release statistics when the time was right. you later back tracked from that claim. meanwhile, the low numbers, russia has released seemed meant to reassure the public that the war is not a catastrophe. the civilian death toll another big question,
12:17 pm
the united nations most recent statistics, 7000 civilians dead. but the front line is too dangerous for observers to make a real count. many russian occupied areas like the city of mario fall, where mass graves have been photographed by satellites, may hold tens of thousands more. and russia is not letting international monitors into those areas. russia in general, makes no comment on the number of civilian casualties in ukraine. let's take a closer look. now we are joined by miriam cosmo. she is a senior expert on eastern europe at the german bertelsmann shift on. welcome to the program, and thank you so much for joining us. why do you think ukraine and russia are refusing to disclose the real number of their more casualties? because it's such sensitive for the state of affairs right now. ukraine has
12:18 pm
tremendous, has made tremendous sacrifices in regaining its territory. putin. meanwhile, has they hit on holding the territory that's in the neck? it has been very a couple of months for the kremlin in terms of the hazard where teeth. you mentioned that the left you chief of staffed folk about $100000.00 just in comparison, in 10 years off the war in russia, in placement in the previous century we x was less than half. so it's a question, a want to take off off of with all moran and that is particularly on the russians type that came meantime you chief or slough underline
12:19 pm
was criticized this week for publishing and then on publishing information on a high number of killed ukrainian soldiers and i'd just like to ask you what you think of that and just help political. all of this is it is very political, of course, because the ukraine is so regaining ukrainian territory. such an offense, f, a probation is connected to high losses, particularly because ukraine does not have modern west on time that augment the sacrifices at the same time. we have rational now in this situation where is recognizing when tough, the weapon i think it's less than i think when so it is basically target targeting every of the $40000000.00 ukrainians. and as we've gone off the country way beyond the front line, and by having started off of war on the energy front. and
12:20 pm
here we have a in human humanitarian risk accessed very dire situation for you. i also want to get your take on the latest developments in the war because yesterday we saw drawing strikes on airfields inside of russia. and we have to say that ukraine, of course, is not officially claimed responsibility, but it is being seen as if the ukrainians did indeed perpetrate this attack. so how do you see this potentially escalating the war further or do you think it moves it into a new chapter? i am unsure whether we can, but that would be correct to equal an escalation. we have up the other saying that thought yet operated. all have yet created to drill
12:21 pm
a were responsible for the attacks and the speak about strategically different of different target. but what is common is that the fear or they have been used in the war to attract ukraine show. yes, this is something. this is a new aspect to the us and west, and i was happening very hesitant to support ukraine with the long range messiahs. and it's important to say that the address where you apparently apparently with head on the ground on the ground by whom, as i would not call it a different faith off the war here, the energy aspect is much more crucial than it's in its effect. however,
12:22 pm
this detect, bring the war closer to to moscow and therefore has a chuckle. logical dimension, of course, will have, i believe in russia because it's not restricted or kept away from the capital city. they are as much as used to be eastern europe, europe, expert, marianne cosmo, joining us from the bertelsmann foundation. thank you so much. you're welcome. so and here's a look at some more news. a police officer has been killed and several other people injured in a suspected suicide attack on indonesia main island of java. a man blew himself up shortly after entering the police station. indonesia is police chief says that the bomber had been previously jailed for terrorism and was affiliated with an islamic state inspired group. more than 150 people have been injured as
