a gulf stags. ah, i'm jared ray. thank you for your company today. we start the show with a hostage taking in the east, in german city of dresden authorities there say a man talk to people hostage in a shopping mall in the city. police evacuated the building and cleared people away from the city center. a near by christmas market was also closed. a short time ago, police reported that the hostages were unheard, and the suspects had been injured and was in their custody. earlier on saturday, a woman's body was found at another location in the city. anesha report suggested that the 2 incidents might be linked, but that is currently not clear. joining me here now in the studio is dw political, corresponded benjamin alvarez gruber,

benjamin. tell us exactly how did this all unfold. so as you just mentioned, we have 3 different incidents to try to put it in a chronological order. we have the body of a 2 year old woman that was found in an apartment complex in south and dressed and with the main suspect being her 40 year old, a son. then we have another situation that police still looking into their reports of shots were fired, close it to the central station with the perpetrator, allegedly trying to get into a stationary was at your place and it's a private radio station to try to gain access. they just publish also a statement saying that they're really relieved that no one from the team was injured. so that's the 2nd part in this apartment complex. and then we have this hostage situation there that you just mentioned that ended with in the perpetrator being in custody. of the police with 2 hostages, also that are now with it police, they look on hand, but of course have to undergo medical checks 1st. so the situation is still ongoing,
2:03 pm
even though this whole situation is over. now of course they will still need to find out exactly how these 3 events of possibly late to we know. i mean you've, you've said that the hosted situation is over. do we know exactly how it ended? so what police tweeted is that they had contact was the perpetrator. there were 2 hostages in there, they quickly evacuate the shopping mall. they won't open in the next. i was at something that police also said this is in the city center. so pretty close to the central station there were in touch with him and now we have the perpetrator in put him into another location. so thats information that we have from this shopping center that will remain closed. benjamin. what if anything, can you tell us about the suspects? what police are said, it's m a 40 year old. that's the main suspect they have the assumption that he is suffering from a mental illness. adding that all indicators underlying this conclusion. so that's old, that they can say about the suspect. and as you mentioned,
2:04 pm
they're still looking into possible links between this 3 incidents they still looking into how it, if this man is actually, is the son of the woman whose body was found in the support complex into this. and this still have to look into, it was a waiting from a press release from it. police authorities have phrased their quick response and also the message that they had to the public on one say to don't a publish everything that they had on information as always happens with this type of situation that you have a lot of information that is not proved is not confirmed by police in saying them also to don't go to the city center. so that was pretty quick in giving this message across, avoid in that area where the situation was unfolding. ok, that was our political correspondent, benjamin of our is gruber talking to us about this hostage taking in dresden in which a person has been taken into custody in the south. the hostages, i'm sorry, in question, have been released unheard. benjamin as always. thank you. we're

we understand are doing everything they can to try and find out exactly who was related and where these accusations are coming from. they say the understanding is that they will try and distance themselves from those people if it is found that there are connections. as soon as possible with the woke up going on, they are very, very keen, obviously for this not to tarnish that tournament and i from the european side. lots of details are coming out about the 600000 pounds. it was find in cash in an apartment in brussels. those. those are media suggesting that eva kylie's father, may have been involved and may have been trying to get like cash out of an apartment, potentially. there's also allegations so killing widely in the belgian press to suggest that eva katie's italian partner was also involved in this. the investigations are really getting underway. and there's a frenzy for information about exactly what has happened here. i can imagine and
2:09 pm
it's a very significant development what you just outlined earlier. it talk to us a bit, jack about either kylie, what do we know about her dealing specifically with gulf states like carter welsh, as we heard in the report. she's sort of sung glowingly in the european parliament about labor reforms, especially with cat r. i also know i have multiple people that were in attendance at the world cup, opening match between kat on an ex widow who told me that she was definitely there at the stadium on that day. so it's starting to be, you know, the sort of net is tightening around her and the allegations that the bodenal's, warranties are very, very keen to just call it a gulf states. they are very keen to say that the investigations must continue. there are a number of other m, p 's who've had their offices sealed related to this investigation. and they're trying to find out as much as they can about exactly what these links are. but it's a very, very bad look for the european parliament, which sort of upholds itself as the boston of democracy and countering corruption.

this is well as potentially very, very damaging for qatar. it's also potentially very damaging for the image of the european parliament that was dw jack paris in brussels. jack, thank you for your reporting. ok, bit of a change of pace. now the european film awards are taking place in iceland capital . reiki vick 5 movies are competing for the best film award. several were short listed at aly festivals like con, venice and berlin. political relevance as even more spies to this contest. he is a look at some of the frontline longer good with one of the most talked about films in can earlier this year was danish iranian director, ali abbas is wholly spider based on the true story of a serial killer targeting sex workers in iran. it stars our amir abraham, me as a female journalist, investigating the crimes in light of the ongoing anti regime protests in iran. the

a wealth of credentials. and many european film award contenders could turn up again in los angeles when the oscars come round in march. i think we use film expert scott roxborough is standing by in reykjavik for us. scott, it's great to see you are what sits the european film awards apart from some of the other well known european festivals. why should we be paying attention to what's going on yet? well, other european tours, i think as film words go are prolly. one of the biggest that really celebrate a certain kind of cinema, sort of art house cinema or tour cinema of the movies that are a nominated tonight. i'm are less interested in big box office than in, in big issues in really addressing big issues in society or, or in cinema itself. so. so the stars tonight are last the, the celebrities or the special effects on and more of the, these issues in society and the impact that these films can have. so it seems then

that these, the woods are quite political. yeah, very much so. i mean, this isn't like the oscars where if you give a political speech on stage to be played off stage by the orchestra here, politics is really at a, at the main in the main focus. and i really expect tonight to hear a lot of, of speeches on a lot of, of you protests about the war in ukraine for example, or about the unrest in the ran. i was speaking to one of the of best actress a front runners as our amir ebara. he, me a who's here, a nominated for best actress for her film. holy spider. i'm. and that is really, i take down of the culture of massage any uh, any ran and i'm very sure she's going to use her platform to night. surely speak out against the regime in tehran. interestingly, one of her main cat contenders competitors in the category. best actress is vicki creeps, who is nominated for a very political film, but a very different kind of

a politics of the film. a corsage which is sort of a feminist, a retelling of european history. she plays a, an austrian actress, austrian emperor empress, on who sort of pushing back against the patriarchy in her society, and trying to form her own sort of media image at the time, a very, very different film, but also a very interesting and, and very politically compelling on that said, of course the, all the film here are political, one of my favorite performances of the year in european said, man nominated a titan. the best actor category is from a pompous called irish actor on in the film after sun, which is really deceptively subtle. portrait of a father daughter relationship that is just really quietly devastating. so you see tonight we're not only can see a lot of a celebration of a lot of very political, a movies, a very political issues of it. also just a celebration of great cinema itself. that's our feel mexico backs, birds got roxborough standing by in reykjavik. iceland for us. got it looks cold
