9:02 am
hello, i'm claire richardson. thanks so much for joining us. we start in a berlin ware shocking revelations about a far right plot to overthrow the german government or at the center of discussions in parliament this week following a special session on monday. further details have now emerged about how a group linked to the so called rice borger movement, allegedly planned to carry out a qu, germany's dylan shock after last week's nationwide raids, targeting far right suspects. it now appears their network may have been wider than 1st thought. members of the german parliament's legal affairs committee revealed that investigators found more than 100 letters of so called declarations of confidentiality from people who supported the groups cause the alleged plotters also planned to form more than 280 homeland security units intended to become

a new army is open, guns concluded they were supposed to make arrests and also carry out executions going on death. this shows how concrete, the threat posed by this group really was bus one reason copier long hours. good. now authorities are discussing potential political consequences. one hard topic is whether to tighten germany's gum laws already among the strictest in europe. intelligence agencies say the plotters had gathered a substantial number of weapons. but before making wide ranging political changes, lawmakers want more information. but in regarding the spot market on the question of gun laws, i would like to understand exactly what kind of weapons are involved about and how they attempted to procure weapons reform on. yet before we go for a tightening, we have to see if there is any problem at all in the legal framework, as it is to day to dies, public officials deemed anti democratic could potentially be dismissed more quickly . this comes off to revelations that a former m p for the far right a f
9:04 am
d party was allegedly part of the plot. the former m p still had access to parliament. and they could now be strict to rules for entering official buildings. jubilant opened his house sign we want to be and to remain an open house also for citizens. i landed the same time, we have to guarantee security for all of us also for our visitors. and this means that not just any one can be allowed entry, common part in future, there will be closer scrutiny than has perhaps been the case so far off. the plot to attack parliament brought back memories of a failed attempt by protest as to storm the berlin building and 20 twin g authorities. and now debating which measures could prevent scenes like this. and more importantly, safeguard germany's democracy. while d w. a political correspondent, thomas barrow is following the story for us. and i earlier asked him what new
9:05 am
information has come to light about the far right groups a legit plans. security officials intelligence agencies have been briefing member of parliament. in fact, i was only yesterday in parliament reporting on that myself, and i would highlight 2 specific elements that have come out of those new revelations, which also give or at least shed light on what these people were actually planning . one is the number of weapons that have been allegedly found, which was larger than previously. no more talking here of around a 100 weapons that have so far been found. and 2nd, that the number of people involved is also larger than what was originally reported . ok, there were 25 people initially arrested the 27 that were members of this organization . but it has now been reveal that the group may have been much bigger. this all gives you an idea of just how big this organization was and how advanced also their
9:06 am
plans were at the same time how important it was that security authorities were able to dismantle this group and carry on with their investigations. so a bigger group and then thought stockpiling weapons, how imminent were their plans to overthrow the government? according to authorities, those plans were very serious. and they were also at an advanced stage, especially at a local level in germany. but they were not necessarily eminent from what we have been able to gather. in other words, they were serious, but it was not necessarily clear to what extent they would have been successful with their plans. that obviously has to do also with the fact that as we saw in our report, there had already been a similar situation in august 2020 were protest, a stripe of saw the building and that led to also consequences and discussions we met, which may have helped at least, authorities to look more closely at this rice burger movement. so basically this movement of people who do not believe in the legitimacy of the german state. so
9:07 am
again, those plans, we're certainly very serious. but it is still a debated question whether those plans were all so imminent. in other words, whether they would have been able to achieve what they were planning. so let's talk briefly about those measures being discussed by lawmakers to tightened security to think they are likely to be implemented. it depends what you discuss as those possible measures when i was talking to m. p 's for members of parliament yesterday . it seemed clear that they were at the initial stages of their investigation. it was yesterday. and this week it's been mostly about getting more information about finding out more details about this alleged plan. i normally, afterwards some of the concrete measures will be announced. there are several measures being discussed with a gun laws also with the who can get into the bit public buildings and so on. we saw that in our report. what exactly will be decided that is still open, that is still part of the political debate,
9:08 am
which we're seeing in parliament this week. so to be determined, what we'll see in terms of security measures, i thomas, what else can we expect to come next in this investigation? well, essentially further discussions, further debates in parliament as to what should be the concrete steps because they are very controversial. so if you talk about gun laws, germany has some of the strictest gun laws in europe, but not everyone in parliament believed that gun laws should be tightened even further. if you talk about access to public buildings, again, extremely controversial, because on the one hand, authorities want to make sure that it remains an open house as m p told us, but at the same time they want to make sure that that open house is secure. so we can certainly expect more debates on this issue. we can certainly expect as well. a lot of controversy on what comes next. absolutely, thank you so much for that. that is our political correspondent, thomas barrow to ukraine. now, where russian forces are keeping up their attacks pounding targets in the east and

south of the country and across ukraine and 1000000 still remain without power in sub 0 temperatures. after further strikes on power grids and other key infrastructure. despite the tough winter conditions, ukraine says it efforts to retake occupied territory aren't taking a break. russia's military has been pounding the front line in the done yet screeching for 9 months now. trying to break through and reach t cities and east and ukraine, but ukrainian forces have been fighting them back. this area often yet is currently under russian control. and it's residents. how caught in the crossfire. there are few areas that have escaped damage. this time the missile that hit was ukrainian little as you owe shop is gone. so others, more shops and buildings. ukraine says its troops hath repelled

9:11 am
across to train ever since the beginning of fall. and they have been targeting civilian infrastructure such as centralized, heating m and the electricity grid. and they have been quite successful in doing so . so large parts of the country, cities are temporary without power, without power, without water, without heating. and as you can see right now, here it's, it's quite cold. we have about 0 degrees, your key right now, but come january, this could become a lot a lot, a lot colder, even could drop to minus 10 degrees easily. so gas is needed for, for heating, actually to keep people warm in their apartments. and the consequences could be dire of this. this does not become the case. and as the norway ahead of the norwegian refugee council pointed out yesterday, just to give you an idea is that he said if the current situation here continues, hundreds of thousands of people potentially could be displaced and become refugees and actually leave the country. sanitation to those demands to meet ukraine's basic needs. polanski at that conference, also demanding more support in the form of weapons i,
9:12 am
including modern tanks. what does ukraine need to carry on its counter offensive against russia? right, so the russians at the moment are trying their best to freeze the conflict and to perhaps starts another offensive and beginning of spring. the ukrainians, on the other hand, are trying to push forward, trying to keep the momentum after recently of loretta territory. and a lot of their success in the past has been based on, on weapons deliveries on, on, none, on western weapons for example. and for that, they need more firepower to can continue like this. they are in need of tanks. they are need of artillery and they are in need of spare parts. some for example, the, the german appends alberts 20000 or the u. s. made howitzers that were provided to the ukrainians and they have been under a lot of stress. they have been in operation for, for quite some time now. and they need a spare parts in order to, to continue this, this, the, the fighting and max to day an international meeting aimed at supporting ukraine through the winter is kicking off in paris. what can we expect to come out of that?
9:13 am
right, so the entire country in many sectors of this country may need need help at the moment b, a, the economy, be it the transport sector, be it beat agriculture when it comes to rebuilding the country a lot as needed. but most dire situation. a matter of survival as the ukrainian, the prime minister actually put it is a reinstating heating where it's been lost to him. so for heating and for the electricity grid. the prime minister shamal said a roughly $1000000000.00 us dollars worth when needed in order to yet to keep people warm. ok, thank you so much for that and appreciate your reporting that is max and are for us give so getting ukraine through this winter and repairing damage infrastructure. that's at the focus of that international donors conference in paris to day i had of the conference, a dw correspondent nick connelly takes
9:14 am
a closer look at what support has been promised to ukraine so far. if you will, clean a vital continues for ukraine, for as long as it takes since the very beginning of the war, we were very hot together to help the brain to resist and to be resilient. and we, the european union stand here by them in these very difficult times as long as it takes how generous european governments really been 9 months into this war. and it's doorstep in europe that only just caught up with the united states. the kill institute for the world economy. the you and your pink governments have now together pledged 52000000000 euros. barry, 48000000000 in the u. s. that might sound like a lot, but it's less than a 10th of what they use spending when its own post coverage recovery program. and then there's the question of timing. experts criticize that, it can take months, the promises and out front of the tv cameras and keep to actually materialize. and
9:15 am
now at least you can government can to afford to patch up basic infrastructure of the each new russian attack. but many here and ukraine, where they're countries in such bad shape, they might soon need support on a whole different level just to carry on. and that's even before anyone starts counting, the cost of eventually rebuilding europeans will be asked to make good on that promise to help for long as it takes and that could be decades. so we can bring you up to speed now with some other stories making world news headlines. sam, a bank when a free to the founder of the failed f t x crypto currency exchange was arrested in the bahamas after being criminally charged by u. s. prosecutors. the 30 year old had been under investigation by us and homie and authorities following the spectacular collapse of f t x last month. and this one's exciting. a major scientific breakthrough in nuclear fusion technology is expected to be announced in the united states today. for the 1st time and experiment appears

a country on his shoulders. but also to us and i took up the dynamo to lead a, as he can us employees on campus in our leader. he's always pushing us and motivating us all. he has that special advantage. and when we're on the pitch, we know we have messy. and that's a great source of motivation. it helps us and you always know you can do more. ah expects these fans to bring the noise again on tuesday night loud and passionate argentina, hoping not to be silenced by a croatia team, which is no stranger to spoiling the party. ah no. so the question then is, despite the fan support for argentina, can pro, shall pull off the upset. i put that to date at the sports correspondent danya barcelona. i mean, croatia is a great side. they're very difficult to play against. they know that coming into
9:24 am
this game, they won't be the favorites. argentina obviously will. and they'll have the momentum of the stadium on their side. but actually croatia they produce some of their best football and most spectacular tournament moments when they have their backs up against the wall, they're going to be very compact, offensively, very well organized. and they never, ever, ever stop running. now if the scheme does go into extra time, croatia are the experts, 8 of their last 9 naco games have gone into extra time and they're $4.00 to $4.00 on penalties. so if anyone can handle it, it's croatia. ok, let's see if that pressure will translate. of course, for many argentina versus croatia means little messy versus look up moderate. what you think we can expect from those 2 tonight? i mean, messy and moderate to absolute legends of the game, both trying to win the world cup for the 1st time. massy 35 mothers, 37. so they have so many appearances for their countries,
9:25 am
but they're different players. messy is that prolific goals score. he's somebody who argentina looks to, to produce those special moments of magic. one of the best players of all times now moderate, he scored a little bit fewer goals, of course, because he operates a little bit deeper in the mid field. he's somebody who really dictates the play for croatia. he wins balls back now, both of them different, but very crucial players to their side. interestingly enough, they're kind of connected because in the game where massey scored his 1st goal for argentina luc hm aldridge was making his croatia debut. so a special game for them. now we also saw that very enthusiastic argentina fans in that last report. how important do you think they will be to argentina's chances? i mean, argentina, vance, there are so many of them here. and they've really created such a spectacular environment. they bring that south american football culture. i mean with the singing and dancing and drums in the report, actually, you guys heard the song that they always sing and when you hear that song in the
