blaming ukraine. for this attack, an apartment building and a hospital among the buildings damaged in the shelling a seni, a ukrainian military general now says russia is digging in for a long war in ukraine and still wants to conquer the entire country. criminal should, under the kremlin, realizes that in the short term, it's impossible to achieve victory in the war. no more, lou. thus it's seeking to turn the conflict into a prolonged armed confrontation aimed at exhausting ukraine and our partners. there were now concerns that any new russian assault could come from neighbouring bell roofs, whose armed forces continue to hold combat readiness drills close to its border with ukraine. earlier i spoke to d. w correspondent, nick, not connelly. i asked him about the extreme hardship that people are going through, especially where russia is claiming that it is not hitting civilian targets at all
10:05 pm
. well, obviously they are still claiming that this is about basically depriving ukraine's military of the power and the logistics to make their successes on the battlefield happen. obviously that doesn't really cuddle device when you're here on the ground and seeing the kind of targets that are being hit. but i think there's a level to which they basic given up trying to create a kind of coherent narrative people here in ukraine from the west. they basically know that that audience is lost to them. so this is all about the story to people back home in russia who maybe want to believe what they told and people in 3rd countries or maybe don't have an ability to really fact those claims. and i think there's also just a conviction in moscow that they all just so big. and they also important because of their nuclear stages. that seat at the security council, that basic people have to talk to them, whatever they do, whatever the kind of war crimes potentially committed by their trips in ukraine at the end of the day, outside power, the u. s. europe will come and speak to them. so there's basically not much of a kind of perceived,

impulsive kind of kind of need to really stick to the ordinary rules of war. they can basically get away with that really seems to be what they think the currently they're reporting from keith. the european union has signed off on a new 18000000000 euro aid package for ukraine. and yet another raft of sanctions against russia. leaders of the used 20 southern member states met today, brussels, where the focus was supporting ukraine. the details of this night rounded sanctions against russia. those details have not been revealed, but the commission at earlier proposed travel bands, an asset freezes on more than 230 russian officials. this is stan, ukrainian, president of ultima zalinski. he joined today's summit by video link. he appealed for aid and also for more advanced weapons on janelle by our brussels bureau chief alexander phenomena. she has been following the summit force . alexander the newest sanctions package has just been approved. what is the
10:07 pm
e you targeting this time? well ran this new package of sanctions. it's more about tightening chris tricks, sions, and other punitive measures against russia. more individuals and entities will be blacklisted. 3 more banks will be sanctioned for more russian tv channels will be taken off the year in europe. and the european union is also saying that they want to cut rushes access to drones, for instance. so actually you could ask, why did it take so long to approve those sanctions? and to the point here is that some western nations, among them, france and germany, they wanted to some exemptions to be included in this new package of sanctions exemptions for russian fertilizer producers. because they are saying that it's important for those producers to export de fertilizers to 3rd countries to africa, you know, to prevent
10:08 pm
a famine door there. and so that was their argument. others are saying no, it should be no exemption. so now we have this agreement and at the exemptions are apparently part of the package. the european union decided to day or so i'm for new a to for ukraine. how unified would you say european union countries or in ramping up the support? a crane, but of course we also have to add that the longer this war continues the more difficult it is to stay united because all of them, all member states are dealing with the full out of this war with inflation, with soaring energy prices. so it's becoming more and more difficult, but for now they remain united. did every zones under phenomena brussels with the latest on that from it's alexander, thank lately he has spent more time behind bars than

on the court. the german former tennis ace, boris becker. he walked out of a british prison today, and he is reportedly brought back here in germany. now in april, i was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months for declaring bankruptcy. and yet heidi hundreds of thousands of pounds in assets, 55 year old was supposed to serve at least 15 months, but his attorney says that his sentence was reduced early release and that he's not subject to any legal restrictions here in triple is corresponding pronouncement in london, or why boris becker was released and deported just 8 months into his sentence. yet sounds like a fairly light sentence in the end. it doesn't, it only serving 8 months out of these 30 months, a 2 and a half years sentence. it all comes down to him, actually not being a british citizen. he is a german citizen. of course we know. but boris becker,
10:10 pm
he's been a fixture in the u. k. he's been living here in england for 10 years. he did not. however, brent apply for british citizenship and this early release program that he was eligible for is essentially for foreign criminals, a citizens of other countries. what the u. k is trying to do is ease the burden on its overcrowded prison system. and boris becker became eligible for this is the key word branch deportation. that's what's making all the headlines. he's essentially being deported from the u. k. back home to germany. it's all because he is a foreign national, as he mentioned, serving about 8 months of that 30 month prison system arriving back in germany today leading from a small. busy london airport on a private charter jet, making his way back. and as you said, his lawyer speaking to the media today, saying that once he's back in germany, he won't be facing any more person time. yeah, and i guess in the post bergs at m, u k being a citizen of the e u. m as a completely different meaning that it used to talk to me
10:11 pm
a little bit about what thank what year, what did he do to end up in fruit prison there in the 1st place, this all comes down brent to this bankruptcy fraud cases. and this was a trial that happened this spring of 4 counts of basically hiding millions of dollars of assets from creditors. the money that he owed in a bankruptcy case, he was accused. and then later convicted on 4 counts, making big headlines back in april when he was sent to prison. and actually, boris becker did do some hard time in a prison, just down the river from here in southwest london, pretty close to where he was living in an apartment was in later transferred to a lower security prison to be prepared to be sent back to germany. and either before all of this happened, you know, we were used to seeing him, you know, this former to the of star, he was, he was on television all the time as a commentator. what's it going to do now?
10:12 pm
yeah, it just seems like nothing can really dim the spotlight on boris becker. he was a big star here in the u. k as well was a fixture of doing commentary for tennis matches. there's a lot in the works apparently in germany, he'll be landing and doing a big television interview. there's an apple t v documentary that's being produced about his live. i don't know if you've seen that there was a clip brent that dropped just yesterday about is turmoil the last 3 years or so. and there's a few other projects in the works as well. we do know, however, the probably the person who's most excited for boris is return is his mother. she was speaking to the german media just recently. and she said that the best christmas present that she could think of is aber torn home by boris becker. well, i would hope that his mother would say that karl nesbit in london are deportation bid. i carol good to see you. thank you. now to the world cup and guitar, where morocco's driebe run has ended after rainy champions,

france defeated them in wednesday. so my final, but morocco did make history, becoming the 1st african and arab team to reach the sim eyes last night, though frances attack proved overwhelming awe, given the history between morocco and france, this encounter was always going to be about more than football. but shortly off to kickoff frogs, often a cutting reminder that everything boils down to what happens on the pitch. and the writing champions would be no push of his tail. hernandez made it one mill just 5 minutes. he olivia, he reads 12 minute chance further show the atlas lines torment best defense might finally be vulnerable. despite the early deficit, morocco didn't fold. yeah, that elia meek probe, the french back line with a spectacular chance just before the break. but it was frogs largely on the back foot in the 2nd half who dashed morocco's dreams once and for all substitute

randell colo moloney finish things off at 2 nil fronts. we'll have to keep the celebration going by retaining the cup against argentina, while ha broken morocco have already written history of brazil might have had a poor showing at the work up that their players continue to attract, europe's biggest clubs, real madrid, and sign teenage prodigy andric from brazilian side, how made us for reported 60 to 70000000 euros. that's right. 16 year old andric as the team's youngest ever debutante, he won the championship with him earlier this year. and we understand that he will play for amir us before heading to madrid. when he turns 18 in july of 2024. it is a reminder, the top story we're following for you this, our ukraine's has the 2 people have been killed by russian shelling in here. so on . the southern city has faced repeated attacked by russian forces since ukraine
