a long war in ukraine and still wants to conquer the entire country. grandma should, under the kremlin, realizes that in the short term, it's impossible to achieve victory in the war. lou. thus, it's seeking to turn the conflict into a prolonged armed confrontation aimed at exhausting ukraine and our partners. later . they were now concerned that any new russian assault could come from neighboring bella, bruce, his armed forces, continue to hold combat readiness drills close to wait supporter with ukraine. earlier i spoke about ukraine with mike martin from the department of war studies at kings college, london. i asked him about the likelihood of a new russian ground offensive that could target ukrainians capital ukraine's cap. i don't actually see that is very likely, i'm firstly, i don't think the russians have that intently. they very clearly signal that they're interested in the dumbass and east of the country. i think their designs on
10:05 am
kiva. and secondly, i don't think they have the capability russia the moment is very much on the defensive in ukraine and to launch a huge, another offensive. all the way round coming from better use i think is unrealistic . now it's been reported that the u. s. is preparing to send patriot missile systems to ukraine. you think that would be a game changer? the patriot missile system is it is a highly effective anti aircraft system. and so what it would do is enable the ukrainians to at the moment that sort of shooting down about 70 percent of the missiles are coming. that way they can increase that coverage and knock out almost all of the missiles that are heading towards you credit cities. is it going to change the balance of the war? no, because the russian attacks on the crating cities themselves are not changing the strategic balance of the war. but it will mean that a lot more euclidean civilian survive the winter. what about the battle tanks?
10:06 am
mike, there's your crane is begging for battle tanks. germany is under massive pressure to send them. why is nobody sending battle tanks to ukraine? is a very good question. um, do you need these tanks in order to go on the offensive that a large scale and they are somewhat complex and have quite long logistical tails. it's not just a question of the time she need the cruise and the logistics and the fuel to run them. but i wonder whether these fall in the bucket of is this escalade tree, if we treat these in the package. but i think eventually the west is going to get round to sending main battle tanks to ukraine. russia says that sending patriot missiles would be an escalation that would have consequences. what do you make about i think that we've heard this before from russia. so when we were sending an anti tank message systems, i said that was asked lately,
10:07 am
then when we sent longer range artillery, the high mazda on so much about that was escalates re, russia says that everything is escalates re i'm the question for the west is i think most mostly what we end up doing is thinking that things ask later and then sending them anyway. so the quicker that we send them the better and the shorter the time until the war ends. mike, thank you very much for analysis. that was my court, and senior fellow in war thought is a king's college one. thank you. bell to peru, where the supreme court has ordered the ousted president pedro castillo to remain in detention for 18 months on charges of rebellion. casio supporters of stepped up nationwide. protests demanding his release, and the resignation of the replacement authorities have imposed a state of emergency as demonstrators disrupt trade and tourism. supporters of

10:12 am
there is lots of debris still on the street that this being cleared away as we speak. that was just forced out by that immense amount of water. but inside the hotel, apparently there is just devastation. it's very dramatic images. the whole of the 1st floor as completely shattered. so up at the moment, emergency services cannot. they cannot enter the site and they are still just waiting to to yet see it. when that is cleared out, all of the 400 people who were staying at that hotel, they have been now evacuated. they have been taken away to another location. but normally this would be a very busy street. you have to imagine were in the heart of berlin and on a friday morning that would be cars and buses, a bustling here. and it's also a tourist area where loads of the sites are located off the city. but all everything around me is now cordoned off. so yeah, it's
10:13 am
a very different friday morning. and just sort of yours get an idea this. this aquarium was built into the lobby of the hotel and it kind of a vertical immersive experience for people to see. and it must have been devastating when it collapsed. tell us more about that aquarium and, and the fish that were living in it. so at this aquarium is a very popular sight, especially for families. and it's the world's largest freestanding aquarium 40 meters high. and the specialty of that aquarium was indeed that you could ride an elevator just through the for to see the fish. and so it's a $1500.00 fish. as you mentioned, exotic fish living in that agrarian normally. but as emergency services are telling me here indeed they they think that all of them perish. no. unfortunately, in this incident,
10:14 am
you've been speaking with emergency services there. understand um, what are they telling you? saw the police that i talked to said that there is still investigating the cause of this burst. they don't want to call it an explosion at this point because they are not a suspecting any criminal act. at this point of the investigations, obviously the fire brigade is still working to assess the damage and also contain it. you have to imagine those 1000000 leaders of water. they had to go somewhere on a lot of them have landed now under ground in the garage of that hotel, but also other structures. so throughout the day we're expecting different sorts of services to come here and still. yeah, clear the area of the water on to look further into the damage. thank you so much. our reporter, honest sir oster there in downtown berlin. you are watching
