tv   The Day  Deutsche Welle  December 16, 2022 11:02pm-11:30pm CET

11:02 pm
ah, you could describe it as elan mosques own version of cancel culture last night, giving no warning or reason twitter the company that he owns, suspended the accounts of at least 8 journalists on both sides of the atlantic, public outrage. the european union warning that there are red lines that should not be crossed. well, ellen mosque apparently sees it differently. he's falsely accused reporters of endangering his family by dock, seeing or revealing personal information online. today he pulled his twitter followers asking, when should these suspended accounts be reinstated? a clear majority saying, now i'm for golf in berlin. this is the day. ah,
11:03 pm
well, now it's important. the platforms have terms and conditions, terms of conditions that are clear. so class, they wanted it to be a town hall and freeform when they make a decision under that terms of conditions, it's important that it's proportional must, has a very comfy make campus nap. it can be arbitrary or discriminatory. ah, also coming up harry and meghan's netflix documentary, part 2 is drawing ire and fire from the public. many saying that now the brotherly ties between harry and william the future king may be broken forever. i think it's tragic. i how the relationship between the 2 brothers has, has changed so much. it is sad because i don't see how it can be easily re pad
11:04 pm
and especially when one brother is singing insults and the other brother from across the atlantic. but to our viewers watching on p b. s in the united states into all of you around the world. welcome. we begin the day with the faces of elan musk of the new owner of twitter, the man who declares himself a free speech absolutist went on a suspension spree last night, shutting down the accounts of several reporters from the new york times. the washington post. see an invoice of america and other media outlets. it happened without any warning and no reason was given. what we do know is that twitter recently banned an account that tracked the real time movements of you on mosques. private jet must claim that this was doc c, and that's when private information such as addresses, phone numbers and e mails are shared online, usually to harass someone. twitter has since changed its rules. it now prohibits
11:05 pm
doxey. the suspended accounts from yesterday. they do not belong to reporters who have engaged in docs, and yet this is what must tweeted to day. same doxey rules apply to journalist as to every one else. and he then went into more detail tweeting. they posted my exact real time location, basically, assassination coordinates in obvious direct violation of twitter terms of service was shutting down. journalists. it does not sit well on this side of the atlantic. the european union has threatened ill on bus with sanctions, european commission, vice president vera drover, tweeting this news about arbitrary suspension of journalists on twitter is worrying the use. digital services act requires respective media, freedom, and fundamental rights. this is reinforced under our media freedom act,
11:06 pm
eel on musk should be aware of that. there are read, lie, read lines, and sanctions. soon of one of the journalists who suddenly discovered that his twitter account had been suspended, joins me now. steve herman is the chief national correspondent with voice of america. steve joins me now from whitewater. virginia, which is a south of washington d. c. steve is going to have you with this. do you have any idea why your account was suspended? well i don't know for sure because twitter never notified me of any reason. something just popped up on my account saying that it was suspended. and then later there was another message jo popping up saying i was permanently suspended. it de, obviously had to do with a tweets of that i had been putting out about the other journalists who had been suspended for tweeting about an account that that follows the ellen must jet. that
11:07 pm
itself had been suspended. so this was growing larger and larger. and it's obvious that i was one of those who fell victim to what appears to be a pretty arbitrary and inaccurate description of why we were em mom band. yeah. be because it must, has been, it has been claiming that that journalists have bins suspend their accounts, have been suspended because they've been committing dock seeing. but i mean, just to set the record straight. you and the, the journalist who's accounts were suspended last night. you were not publishing any real time information about anyone's whereabouts, correct? absolutely not dead, including a heel on mosque, which is what this is really about. apparently, and to say that these journalists were engaged in doc sing,
11:08 pm
which would be giving out as you said, somebody's location in real time on their home address, their private, a phone number for the intent of causing harm to them. to accuse the, the journalists of this, including myself, is a false ridiculous. and i probably could think of a few other words that we can't say on here. you know, it seems that in the last few weeks twitter has really it has become all about elan musk. and i dare say that this is not what most people were expecting when, when he took over the company or, or my sugar coating are our memories of the recent past. i mean, how do you see? yes i, well i have been a tweeting a lot about twitter because if you're on twitter, you're interested in what's happening with twitter. i'm not a full time tech journalists. i don't cover the, the twitter beat, the tesla be the law must private jet beat. any of those up sort of things,
11:09 pm
but it has gotten an increasing amount of attention knob of journalist such as myself, who are very active on twitter. so we have been tweeting and re tweeting others about what we have seen as a greater instability on twitter. both on the off of the legal administrative in technical side. talk to me about a reaction on your side of the atlantic. i mean, has there been a reaction coming from members of congress or from the white house? yes, a number of members of congress. i have um put out statements today about their concern regarding this um oh and i expect there will be as the hours go on more reaction to this and and last the, these accounts including mine are unconditionally. i'll reinstate it fairly quickly
11:10 pm
. in steve, what do you make of the swift and the very direct warning that it came from the european union and you know, addressed directly to elan mos. well, as you're well aware, there are about different levels of engagement regarding regulations concerning social media and the internet ah, on of the different shores of the an atlantic. and of, i'm not surprised to see the sort of quick and forceful response from the european union, especially um, i think they tend to be much more proactive and, and react a little quicker to these things. and although things say here in the united states and congress are politically very divided, and this is the time of year, we're not them much, i'm a gets done. ah,
11:11 pm
there probably will be more congressional scrutiny of these social media platforms engaging in the sort of activities in, in the future. and what happens next for you? i assume your account, it hasn't been reinstated so far. are you plant, are you counting on it? be reinstated at some point i would sure hope so. i would only do it if it's a unconditional. i will not to delete or take down any of the, the tweets that i tweet it out if it is meant as some sort of acknowledgement that i did something wrong e in any way. ah, i have made dumb alternative plans so to speak. i did set up as an insurance policy a couple months ago. i think it was a accounts on other social media platforms. a last night when this happened,
11:12 pm
i had 3100 of followers on mastodon and that so well over 20000 last time i checked of this afternoon on my time. ah, i had 81112000, no followers on twitter. i'm so up at mastodon, i don't see as a replacement for twitter, but it is some sort of alternative, steve herman, with voice of america. see, we appreciate you taking the time, sharing your story with us. adam will be following to see what happens to those accounts. thank you. thank you. oh, well, the world has been reacting to the final installment of prince harry and meghan's tell series, which has now hit netflix while the 1st 3 episodes document, the couples battles with the british media. the final 3 take aim squarely at the royal family itself. harry saying that his brother screamed at him and
11:13 pm
a terrifying exchange about his plan to exit from the royal family. he also accused royal officials of leaky and planting stories in the media. meghan had her own revelations, she said that she considered suicide in response to the negative coverage about her break with britain's roy. i wonder what would have happened to us every not going out when we did security was being pulled. everyone in the world knew where we were . i took the manage, got to see this institutional gas lighting. we're happy to lie to protect my brother. we were never wanting to from the truth to protect us friends area, megan marco, the ro, royals. they just want it to be free. they want to be free to love and be happy. i applauded bear with us to be moved to the next trucks. you got to finish the best job to even have a chance to create that home that we had always one i've

always felt this was a fight with fighting for ah, craney authorities say that russia has launched another major missile attack on energy facilities and infrastructure. several explosions struck the capital keep today, other targets included the her keith and odessa regents li, destroyed, come as ukrainian military and civilian leaders warned that the kremlin is preparing for a new wide scale offensive. and that it could come as early as january. ah rushes relentless attacks on ukraine returned to the capital to day plumes of smoke rising and keep him at one of moscow's most intense bombardment. since it launched its invasion. as explosions

sounded across the city residence rushed to take refuge under ground. the keep subway has some of the deepest stations in the world designed to act as bomb shelters. and times just like these. with the attacks forcing trains to be cancelled stations were still packed with people seeking safety and solidarity. this man bursting into renditions of ukrainian folk songs to cape spirits up go through the dora passing time and bomb shelters. now routine for many with these
11:16 pm
3 hours. oh, ukrainian authorities say russia 70 muscles across the country. while the majority was shot down by air defense systems, 2 people were killed in the city of covey. rear ha keeps that. he was also hard hit with officials describing colossal damage to infrastructure had taken how're and the regime for structure make him. people suffer. you are in the winter time that's about genocide to follow him nation. but i must admit that our moral is extremely strong and we will never surrender. the attacks are unlikely to ease over the coming weeks that ukrainian defense shapes predicting russia will launch a new offensive early next year. that could include a 2nd attempt to take keys or did obviously,
11:17 pm
connelly is in keith. he told us about today's attacks. 4 different towns, it started with a lot of bangs here in key or something we haven't had quite some time out, seemingly that was air defense system here working but pretty close to us in the center of give this is a real sign that russia still has many more cruise missiles and other options as spousal than ukraine would want. we've heard from the crane or 30, they say they were able to deal with were able to shoot down about 3 course missiles that were launched against you. crank a 60 out of 76, but it does seem especially outside of care of where the defense of better lots of she talks been hit, lots of power outages here in central. keith is still quite a bit of power. you might be able to see some lights on behind me, but holds weights of care of all without power, without water. and is a pretty grim evening here in kiff at a time where it had seemed like these attacks were kind of fighting down. i'm joined now by adama taylor sagen, also an expert on russian security and development at kings college in london. it's
11:18 pm
good to have you where this, these attacks today that we've seen on ukraine's power grid on the civilian infrastructure. it is all looks like just, you know, more of the same that we've been seeing from russia. how successful had these attacks been so far when i mean, compared to a few days ago, and these attacks have been only probably successfully, i could say, i mean also a few days ago they were not very successful. but as somebody says something, the venue crated and a half need certain certain points from child very cold and i some seek is up next to having a dog. so this is sort of his relentless, dark niche, which has an impact over all of that whole energy infrastructure and sort of the cdn population and also the industrial base on that side of the ability of ukraine to continue operating effective. but i think that, you know, with a s, a florida systems that have been so far delivered on that was the ability that
11:19 pm
additional andy, fancy stems are, are being st. i think ukraine's in a much better position now than it was, you know, a month ago when he's very good tax started. ukraine chef said he'd shot down 60, out of the 76 russian missiles that were fired by russia to day. the numbers appear to be improving ukrainian air defense. it seemed to be getting better. is that how you see it? yes, i think that are, you know, the support that is being provided. i might not do such as germany with their own defense and it's i systems. so it seems that ukraine is getting slowly the support that he needs on its agent to protected safe. i'm much better. i of course we know that suddenly says enter the area of key if but overall i think there is a success rate that reaches maybe 78 percent and that's, that's very high. it's very unfortunate because somebody sense are still not coming
11:20 pm
through i. so alpha was a cause at quite a lot of damage. now it is also important to remember that sometimes when these me says, i hit that in the air that can cause degree and that can have all so i implications because they can fall on the civilian population or on sci fi entering things. so he thinks it is a very dangerous situation. ah, but then, you know, from the cranium perspective, the situation has improved significantly in relation to what it was, you know, maybe a month ago when maybe 50 percent of all the new sites were able to, to at which are the original targets and an element of the military assistance of that ukraine gifts that doesn't get on talked about a lot if training, we know that the british have been training ukrainian forces and now the americans say that they are going to increase the numbers. but they are trained here in germany a bit. what will that look like? i think this is also very important development because they can make money from
11:21 pm
the united states from the pentagon is that's going to be sort of this regular training mechanism of praying and unfold safe fill that security assistance group of ukraine. excuse me. that is going to be carried out in germany on it. it will involve sort of company on battalion sized units to carry out coordinated attacks in the banking field. so that's really very important. it's not only some training forces to implement or to carry out to be able to, to operate equipment that is provided by the united states, but also to carry out more offensive operations. and of course, there is going to be training for the use of the so called nature me sites which are going to be very important, you know, to intersect a ration of a stick on who's me sounds that patrick me says they are advanced, long range air defense as they stems, i run out on high high altitude on so they can be very effective at teaching an
11:22 pm
incoming, miscellaneous, i've done much sort of close that distance to the origin. i think the training of these and paid church systems as well. so that, that is something very positive from being inverse. thanks. that, that's true. that's true. i mean, i think the battalion of the patriot missiles requires 90 to 100 soldiers to operate. so they definitely will need to increase the numbers and training their domain. hillis, i'm gonna moto from king's college london. we appreciate your time and your insights to night. thank you. if you've ever visited berlin, you may have taken a ride in the awkward dome that is an elevator, a lift that's encased in a giant freestanding aquarium that is nearly 16 meters tall. and it's home to about 1500 tropical fish, where 2 people were injured earlier today by flying shards of glass wind that aquarium when the walls the glass walls gave way.
11:23 pm
this giant declared him in a hotel with whom to around 1500 tropical fish and a popular destination among duties. the guests at the hotel walk up friday morning to the sound of a loud bank that beloved graham had shattered. it sounded almost like a fire word, but the hotel actually shook inside. ah, i, i could describe it as a and i jolted out of bed and turned around and i didn't see any movements. i didn't know what that was going on. the thank with 1000000 liters of water, shot to quickly nothing after enough him to start a large cylindrical tank and the building behind him burst. lloyd to plus, there was a mass of water leakage buffer which also caused damage to the building. didn't avoid the pressure and deputy from the building flying into the street
11:24 pm
rescue teams arrived and hotel guests were evacuated. enzo on friday, we heard a loud bang at about 5 or 6 bye, but didn't think anything of it at the time. not a little while later we got out of the room and looked up and done. all my good. all the elevators went down and the lobby was completely destroyed due to the it prep leak, a large number of fish couldn't be saved the elevator right. with views of the tank is now only amenity ah, the world cup is drawing to a close argentina and france face off in the final this coming sunday. while the matches have been thrilling to watch the turn of it has failed to entirely shake the controversy that has surrounded it since guitar was announced as host 12 years
11:25 pm
ago. so the question is, how's the tournament? has it been a success for guitar? shortly before the world cuts opening match, eva, president johnny intent, he know, made a bold proclamation. this fever woke up a tournament of peace and unity would be the one that brings the world together after some difficult times while the jury is still out there. some things are already clear. it's the most expensive world cup of all time costing roughly 200000000000 euros. it's also the most controversial in large part due to katara the labor conditions. thousands of workers reportedly died under unexplained circumstances. building infrastructure workers death mid tournament meant those critiques haven't fully subsided guitars. treatment of women and homosexuals has also been criticized. this came to a head when fif a band teams from wearing the rainbow. one love arm band. germany's protest before
11:26 pm
their opening match highlighted. this tension, the eyes on the circumstances around the tournament were already mad. it's taken the whole world for a ride and the politics of it are sickening. but controversy has not fully eclipse the tournament on germany. t. v ratings dropped nearly 50 percent from the 2018 world cup. deeper reported that viewership is largely up, especially among participating nations. some symbolism has been less controversial . morocco has displayed the palestinian flag after its matches without reprimand, highlighting how the 1st ever world cut the mere up world has helped spur pan arab solidarity. i actually brought football closer to the out of order from football every that'd be i'd have plenty more than it was for those that needed to katara. it's certainly been a unique world cup of there was a lot of countries around the, the chairman, but right now and being here. it's been organized incredibly well. the countries

small size means accommodation is hard to come by, but stadiums are close enough to one another that pens are never far from the next match. you know, i'm lucky enough to have been to 18 games which is pretty special because now i get to be an a fan. you know, in a normal world cup you'll be lucky if you see one game a day, maybe one game every few days. and while this tournament has undergone more criticism than any other, much of the focus has indeed been on the football. whether or not that's a good thing depends on who you ask and with that the day is almost done, the conversation continues online. you'll find us on twitter either at dw news. you can follow me on twitter at brent golf t. v. and remember whatever happens between now and then tomorrow is another day of a good weekend everyone.
